Chapter 10
“Do I want to know what you've done, Sirius?” Narcissa asked, arm looped through her cousin's as he led her, and the rest of them, outside. It was breakfast time, but Sirius insisted that they all follow him outside.
“You'll love it, I swear,” Sirius told her with a winning grin.Knowing what was going on, Bill, who nudged the chuckling Harry, said, “Nothing horrid, I swear.”“Anything he does is suspicious,” Remus snorted, smiling a bit himself as he and Lucius trailed along behind.Opening the door to the backyard, he led them out and grinned. “See? Nothing devious.” Sobering up, he said, “Harry, Bill and I all thought it would be nice to have a change of scenery to eat. As it's a beautiful morning, breakfast outside was something we thought everyone would like.”“Very nice idea, Sirius,” Narcissa said, smiling, giving his arm a squeeze. After everyone took a seat, pleased with the change of pace, Sirius admitted, “There is also an ulterior motive to this.”“I knew that had to come in,” Charlie laughed, shaking his head as he dished up some food.“I commandeered a couple of elves and set them to redoing the kitchen. I figured if we're fixing up the rest of the house, a makeover for that was something that was needed as well. I'm also having them start on the downstairs. Might as well do it all if we're going to end up stuck here for the foreseeable future,” Sirius explained as he dug into his eggs. Looking at Cissy, he said, “I'm going to have you take over how to decorate. Have at it and do what you think is best.”“Good plan, Sirius,” Lucius said with a pleased nod after a sip of his tea. “We have plenty of furnishings at the manor we can use to make this look, and feel, far nicer. Narcissa can have the elves retrieve whatever we need.”“I'll let Cissy have at it and do what she wants,” Sirius told him. “She has great taste, so it'll end up looking nice. The only thing I ask is that it's a livable kind of nice, not just the to look good kind.”Quite happy to have something to do besides focus on how bad the situation was in the house, Narcissa told him, still smiling, “I'll take it on without a worry. The elves will be kept busy for some time, but we'll have a very pleasant atmosphere to live in once they are done.” Looking around, she said, “I do need to get with each of you about how you want your floor of the house decorated. It sounds trite as something to worry about with the mess going on, but I thought, as you're the ones staying there, it's best you have something you like. The elves are putting together albums with pictures of what furnishings we have stored so you can pick what you like.”“I don't see that as trite, Narcissa,” Charlie told her softly. Shaking his head, he explained, “As bad as this is for all of us, some comfort and what we like can only help make us all feel better. Unlike most people, we can't just leave and go where we want when we need to relax or get away for a while. We're all stuck here for the foreseeable future.”“Charlie is correct,” Severus sighed. Though this normally wasn't something he cared about, the idea of picking out items to suit his tastes was something that he was looking forward to. Of course, he would have to deal with the twins for some and compromise in areas, like their bedroom, that would suit all their tastes.“I would suggest that they clean the basement out as well. And set up the basics of a lab. We may need it at some point for some of the more minor potions, such as for headaches and such,” Remus interjected, actually pleased with this.“I'll have them take that on as well,” Narcissa nodded, adding it to a mental list of what needed done. When everyone was done discussing the decorating part, George told them, quietly, “We need to work on several areas.”“In the next day or so, we have to get back to the store,” Fred added, looking around.“All three of us are going, of course, but we have to spend time there to deal with problems,” George continued.“We've been tending to it by owl, but we need to be there in person,” Fred sighed, shaking his head.“They aren't the only ones,” Charlie said, looking around. “I have to go back to work in a few days. We need to come up with something to disguise Draco so I can take him with me. And I'm not sure what the bond is going to do over it, especially with what I deal with when it comes to the dragons. Let's face it, we stay as safe as we can, but it's dangerous.”“Not something we've pondered,” Lucius admitted, resting his elbows on the table, brow furrowed.“We haven't and need to,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. Looking at Bill, he added, gently, “I'm not sure what we're going to do with your job. You can't take Harry and Sirius with you. Not only is it too dangerous for Harry to be out, your job isn't the type that they can sit there with you.”“Don't worry about my end,” Bill told him, sitting his fork down and relaxing. “I have plenty of vacation time built up. If it comes down to it, I can take a leave of absence until we can get a tether that allows me to go to work. Worry about the rest for now.”Happy with that, Lucius nodded, “Instead of issues with the bond, let's focus on this end today and see what we can manage. I think Severus, Fred and George are fine. I'm assuming they have something worked out there.”“We've come up with something,” Severus nodded. “It's nothing to concern yourselves with. We'll manage.”“We'll work on something to disguise Draco then,” Sirius said. “I'm not sure it's necessary, honestly. No one in their right mind is going to try to get on a dragon reserve and tangle with anyone. Those dragons aren't tame and won't listen to someone giving them orders.”“There is that,” Charlie chuckled, grinning slightly. Sobering up, he said, “I just think it's best that we use a glamour or something so too many questions aren't asked. We know people gossip and this isn't something that needs to get out.”“That we can easily find,” Lucius said, mind already honing in on the issue. “I don't think the bond would throw fits over a glamour. Polyjuice—no, that's out. It would take too much to keep doing that day after day. Not to mention getting our hands on the quantity we need. It's also too late in the game to start brewing it.”“Another point to ponder is that we have to start the paperwork for Harry and Draco when it comes to school,” Remus said, looking around. “They can't go back. That's obvious. Even if we get a workable tether, the fact that they are in that school means that not only will Charlie have to attend, but so will Sirius and Bill. That's just not possible.”“And Albus needs to get involved to help us with this,” Lucius added. “The paperwork alone needs started soonest when it comes to pulling them out. It takes time to get that through. There's also the issue that there is one person on the Board we don't want seeing this. He's not a Death Eater, but he does pass information in that direction.”“Bloody hell,” Sirius muttered, rubbing a hand over his face. “Not something any of us thought of.”“It isn't,” Charlie groaned, head going back.“Charlie is now Draco's guardian, so he has to sign the paperwork. The same goes with Bill and Sirius when it comes to Harry. That means we have to divulge the bonds to get this through. And it is not something we want out there,” Lucius told everyone, looking around. Looking between the two teens, he added, “We have real problems with your career paths as well. Draco should be fine as he was going into business. Harry—Curse Breaking—I'm not sure that's viable.”“I don't think it is either,” Bill muttered, shoulders slumping.“I say this—let him go with the classes for Curse Breaking. It can only help in many ways. He can also use them for other careers. We just find something else for him to do. What that might be is beyond me. Until this nightmare ends and we get a longer tether, he can't use anything anyway,” Sirius suggested, brow furrowed, trying to think. By now, he was sure of the reason Harry wanted to go into that career, and it wasn't for the love of it, so he thought they could wiggle around that end without Harry getting upset by it.Having listened in, not having thought of this issue, Severus said, “Get an owl off to Albus today about the problem. It not only takes time to get those papers through, but people have to prepare to take on the classes they need. We can't do that alone.”“How much of a nightmare is the paperwork when it comes to this?” Charlie asked. “I'm not used to filling out that junk and will end up lost if there's a ton of it,” he added sounding exasperated.“It's quite a lot,” Lucius admitted. “However, I'll take it all on. It's something I'm familiar with, so I can tackle it without issue. All you'll need to do is sign it.”“We need to worry about some of the bloody classes. Potions is the big one. Herbology is another. We aren’t equipped to take those on here.” Sirius added, looking around. “I mean, we can teach it, obviously, it's just doing it because of the level the two are at.”“More issues,” Lucius groaned, running his fingers through his hair. Shaking his head, he said, “Let's worry about the paperwork first then go into the classes as the start of term looms. We'll manage. How? That I don't know, but we will.”As that end didn't really concern him, though he was sure he would end up drawn in at some point, Severus waited for a lull then said, looking down the table at Draco and Charlie, “You both need to work on what's there so you can apply that spell. That meeting that's been discussed needs to come, quickly. We can't do that if you're still at loggerheads and have problems.”Slouching slightly, looking mildly annoyed, Draco sighed, “We're trying.”“We are,” Charlie admitted. “Just give us today to see what we can manage. Pass along the spell and we'll see if we can get it working. If not, we might have an alternative that can work for now. We'll discuss it today and go from there.”“As soon as you two can get that spell on, we'll set up the meeting we need,” Remus said gently. He knew what the issues were there, so it was just a matter of getting them to focus there. He hoped that they could get something in place.Seeing the dour looks on Charlie and Draco's faces, Sirius decided to try to lighten the mood. Looking at Narcissa, he asked, “Is there any way for you to get the elves to expand out here slightly. I don't mean huge, of course, but give us some room. That way we can spend more time out here mucking about with something or other. I think it would do good to have so we can get some fresh air since we're so confined to the house.”“I'll see what they can manage,” Narcissa told him with a happy nod. “We can find some nice furniture and some outdoor games that we can all partake in. That will be nice.” Seeing confused looks from the ones not used to such things, she described the Wizarding version of croquet and such. Those were items she was sure she could manage to put in place. And it would be fun. They had enough people in the house that she was sure the games would be most amusing, for all of them.
“This can't go on, Draco,” Charlie said, looking at his bondmate. “We're just driving each other nuts. I get this is bad. You don't have to tell me that. I'm not what you wanted and you sure as hell aren't what I was looking for. We're stuck, though. Which means we have to work together. That includes compromise, on both our ends. And you need to listen to me in some areas, like when I go to work. If you don't, you'll end up seriously hurt or dead. The dragon reserve isn't Hogwarts where you have teachers protecting you. We deal with dragons. None of them are mild tempered. And they make some of Hagrid's pets look like cute kittens.”
Though he had his normal almost angry expression on, Draco did understand the part about the dragons. He wanted to see them up close as he found them fascinating, but also knew how deadly they were. Not sure what to say, Draco looked at him. Sighing, after several moments of silence, he said, “I understand with the dragons.”“I'll keep you as far away as possible, but nothing on the reserves is safe when it comes to dealing with dragons. Until we get a longer tether and you can stay in one of the buildings, you have to listen to us. All of us on the reserve. We know what we're doing, but you'll be in danger when you're close. Those flames aren't the only thing the dragons are capable of.” Charlie explained.“That I get,” Draco nodded.“Just think of it as we'll get out of the house. We'll make it as easy on you as we can, but you have to stay close and listen. We know what we're doing with the dragons, so you'll be fine.”“I can do that,” Draco assured him with a nod.“We'll work on the rest as well. We just have to try, Draco. You need to understand that I'm not giving in to you like your friends do. I will work with you, though, to compromise. You need to do that too for this to work. Something I can tell you honestly is that I don't like this anymore than you do. What I want is to go back to Romania and resume what I had there. That's not happening, as much as I would like it to. We're stuck, together. Probably for the rest of our lives. Unless you want one long fight, you need to give, too. That means on everything. I'm not just giving in to what you want, Draco. I don't care what that invokes with the bond. It's not happening.”Looking at Charlie, Draco didn't know what to say. He was used to getting what he wanted and people doing whatever his way. So far, that wasn't happening with Charlie. The man wasn't acting like those in his life normally did. Shaking his head, he said, “I'm trying, alright? I am.”“You need to try harder,” Charlie told him baldly. “I get you're dealing with this nightmare the only way you know how, but it's involving the both of us at this point, not just you. Something else I understand is you're an only child that's not had to compromise over bits. I had to learn to do that growing up. You need to learn to now as well. Just—drop the attitude with me, Draco. Talk to me without it and we'll work on it. Sometimes you'll get what you want and sometimes I will. Other times we'll find middle ground in it.”Slouching down in his chair, Draco sighed, not sure what to say.“We'll try, alright? Both of us. The bond is there. We both get that. And it's doing strange things. Like pulling us to sleep together. That's something I think means it's trying to pull us to get closer in some ways. For that to happen, we need to work on what's here.” Figuring that was enough of the almost lecture, he said, “Why don't we see if we can get the spell to work? If we do that, we can press on with other areas that need plenty of help. That and get the information we both need on what's coming.”The spell was something Draco was interested in. It meant that he would finally get to hear what was really going on and the parts Charlie was keeping from him. Those he wanted to know about. Straightening up, he nodded, “Let's do that.”Smiling a little, Charlie said, “We'll see what it does. If we can get it on, I say the two of us grab our brooms and go outside. There's not much room, but I think we can smack balls around a bit. What do you think?”Now that Draco liked. “That we can do. We'll have fun.”“If we can start getting along and get a longer tether, I'm sure we can organize a game of some sort with the others,” Charlie told him, hoping that offer helped this along. “I'm sure Harry, Bill and Sirius would like to do something like that. The twins would too, though I’m not sure about Severus.”“Let's see what Mother can have the elves do for space. I know that was mentioned,” Draco told him, planning to get with her about the idea quickly.Pleased that this was going well, Charlie grabbed the paper with the spell and read through it. He hoped this would work and they could press on. Because as sure as dragons shot flames when they burped, he knew his mother wouldn't stay away long. Which meant he had to know what Bill knew in order to prepare.
“They've got the spell on and functional,” Lucius told Remus, Sirius, Bill and Harry after looking through the note Charlie just sent to them. With a pleased nod, he set the paper down and leaned back. They were all seated in one of the small sitting rooms on the ground floor while the elves worked on theirs. “This is good and means we can press on.”
“I say that we plan on that meeting tomorrow,” Remus said, looking around. “I'm assuming the twins filled Severus in on the basics. It's our hope Charlie will do the same with Draco as well so we don't have to go through the whole mess. We can then just press on to what we know is brewing.”“We'll do that,” Sirius nodded. Looking at Lucius, he said, “You might want to send a note to the other two sets of people to make sure that the ones not in the know are caught up.”“I'll do that and send Narcissa to you so you can fill her in. I'm not sure what she knows on the topic as we haven't passed anything along to her about that,” Lucius told him.“We'll snag her today and get her filled in. We can apply the spell to her as well so we're all on equal footing with this mess. That way no one can complain she's not doing the same,” Bill told him.“Good suggestion, yes,” Remus nodded. “She's done very well mediating between all of you, that I don't see a problem, but it's for the best.”“We need something set up to ensure we know who is coming and going. What we don't need is blindsided by mum turning up out of the blue,” Bill said quietly, looking around. “Maybe a spell or something that the elves can put on the door?”“I think there is something akin to that they know,” Lucius told him thoughtfully, rubbing his chin. “Let me get with the head elf to see what he says on the topic. “If he doesn't know of anything, we can find something easily, I would think.”“It's our hope that Albus will hold off people coming over for now, especially her and the younger set. That or your father can,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. “We all need to be in a better place before we can take on something of that magnitude.”“No one, anywhere, is going to hold mum off,” Bill groaned, head going back. “I can guarantee that all this time is doing is letting her stew, the anger growing. The same with the others. In fact, I'm damned sure that the longer they stay away, the worse the explosion that's coming. You know her, Remus, and what she's like. She's not one time calms down. It's more like it causes whatever she's mad at to fester and grow.”“There is that, yes,” Remus admitted softly, looking down at the floor. Blowing out a breath, he said, “I don't know what to do to hold off what's coming.”“Let it come,” Sirius said, leaning back, folding his arms over his chest. “We've made sure everyone knows what could happen. I mean, we spelled that out to Arthur. You two took on Albus. If they can't put a halt to it, it's coming anyway. If it does happen and the explosion comes, it might drive the point home that we aren't joking with this.”“That and we honestly need to know what these bonds are capable of,” Bill added quietly, looking around. Reaching over, he put a hand on the back of Harry's head and rubbed it. Feeling Harry lean against him, he said, shaking his head, “We also need to drive the point home, to everyone, that the bond is there and they can't do a damned thing. Mum and that lot might be the worst of it, but even some in this house might need that point driven home to them. We get it. So do you two. The others, though coping, it may help as well. At least to move things along faster with them. And if we don't know what this bond can do in times of anger, we'll just end up blindsided down the road. This explosion won't be pretty, all of us can tell you that, but some of what we will learn can only help all of us.”“That is quite true,” Lucius nodded. “Like with Fleur. That wasn't nice, but we all got a lesson in what to watch out for and how it can affect situations. That we needed. As new as this is, we're fumbling in the dark with so much because we aren't finding the information we need. Which means we need to get it another way. As distasteful as a practical show of what it can do may end up, it will give us much needed information to help track the dratted thing down.”Looking around, Sirius said, quietly, “I want this kept between all of us.” Seeing everyone look at him and nod, he pressed on, “While we've been distracted with this nightmare, we also need to consider what in Merlin's good name is going on with Albus and how it affects all of us in the house. We know Harry is factoring into what he's planning. With what's here now, that might end up a worse nightmare.”Eyes sliding to Harry, Remus then glanced at Lucius, who was looking at him, before saying, very quietly, “You're right. It's something we need to know.”“I think Severus may know quite a lot on that topic,” Lucius added. “Let's—as this plays out, we need to get out of him just what he knows. With him not spying now, he might give it up. Especially with that spell in place ensuring we can't impart some of what he says. I'm quite sure, with what I know of Albus, that it's not everything the old man knows, but he has to know more than we do.”“Something is really wrong,” Bill said, hand still on Harry's head. “What he allowed to go on with Harry, both at school and home, tells me it's more than just protecting him.”“That is an assessment I agree with,” Lucius nodded, eyes sliding to Harry.“We just—let's not overload ourselves,” Remus sighed. “We have enough to work with when it comes to the bond that this should be secondary. I'm not saying we won't, it just won't take precedence over the bond. If troubling issues start arising, we'll focus more there.” Eyes sliding to Harry, he added, “And we'll have to have Harry sit down with all of us to explain, from his point of view, what went on with so much. We only have parts of the story that is second hand.” Looking at Bill, he added, “For some of us. Others got a more direct version.”“I can do that,” Harry told him quietly with a nod. A glance at Bill, who was nodding, then had him add, “Because there is plenty none of you knew about. Dumbledore did, because I either told him or Mrs. Figg did, but no one else seems to have ever known.”A troubled look sliding over his face, Remus glanced at Sirius, who had a similar one there and was looking at him, he then said, “We'll make time to lay this out and hear what really happened. Then we'll go from there to see what steps we need to take.”Not liking the sound of this as it would complicate an already complex situation, Lucius said, “We can easily farm out most of the work that needs done one day and hole up to get a full picture of what we need. I say we do that soonest as well so we don't have another spanner tossed into an already nightmarish situation.”“We need to,” Bill told him honestly, flushing slightly in anger. “Because I can guarantee that if he keeps pulling some of what he did and pushes for whatever his real agenda is, the explosion coming from me alone will be worse than what is approaching with mum.”Not liking that at all, as he was mostly in the dark about so much, Sirius said, “Yeah, we'll talk, soon, about this. We just need the other mess sorted before we can tackle it.” With that, he made a mental note to get with the two when he could to get out of them what they knew. He wanted to know what it was before being blindsided by something he wouldn't handle well. The look on Bill's face told him it was something that was bound to set him off. That he sure as hell didn't need.
Lying in bed that night, Charlie opened his eyes when he felt the mattress shift slightly. Hearing a soft whimper as Draco curled up to him, obviously in the middle of a bad dream, he didn't think twice and wrapped his arm around the teen. Instantly, Draco seemed to quiet down and let out a soft sigh. Not opening his eyes, Charlie smiled. It felt good. Not letting loose, he pulled Draco closer then turned on his side, wrapping his other arm around him as well, holding him close. Feeling Draco snuggle in, tucking his head under his chin, Charlie's eyes drifted shut. This felt good and right. As he was tired and thought process sluggish, thus muddled, he didn't think much about what he was doing, just holding Draco close. As he did, something in him seemed to relax. He wasn't sure what it was, but it was there. That's all that mattered to him. In the morning he would see if he could figure out what it meant. For now, he would just go with this.
Not opening his eyes, Harry smiled slightly as Bill and Sirius, both, seemed to shift in their sleep at the same time then curl tighter around him, and he gave a contented sigh. This felt amazing. For the first time in his life, he felt truly safe. Oh, he felt safe before, especially when Bill and the others were close by, but not like this. This—he didn't have the words to describe just how good it felt and how safe it was for him.
Sirius was on one side of him. No one in their right mind would tangle with his godfather over him. They would lose, badly, if they tried.Bill wasn't Sirius in that he had the reputation his godfather did. He also didn't think Bill could rise to the level of viciousness Sirius would if someone tried something with him, but he was no slouch either. Over the years, he just had to hide what he wanted to do to people or keep a rein on it because of all they had to keep secret. Now he wouldn't have to do that, so Harry was sure that people would see a side to Bill most didn't know existed.Snuggling in, pressing to both the men, Harry relaxed. One arm draping over Bill, who he was facing, he pressed tighter back to Sirius. This was good. And he loved it. More with each passing day. In fact, he began to look forward to bedtime so that he could be in this position. Of course, he loved spending time alone with Bill and having sex. That was easy to understand. This, though—it was just as good in its own way. And he looked forward to it just as much. There were uncomfortable parts coming, that he knew, and was sure that sex was coming with Sirius at some point, something bound to make both of them uneasy, but he would deal. In fact, there was a part of him that looked forward to that. No, the relationship with Sirius wasn't like the one with Bill and the attraction he felt for the oldest Weasley wasn't the same with his godfather, but there was something there. He would deal with it as it came and move on.Sighing softly, feeling the comforting warmth of the body heat from both of the men, he began to doze off, sure that the nightmares that had plagued him almost all his life wouldn't come again. That was another wonderful side effect of this bond and sleeping the way he was. That safe feeling seemed to follow him into the land of dreams and reassure him in some way. It was another upside to this mess that he adored. With a soft groan, Harry slid fully asleep, a smile still on his face.
