Author’s Note – No, your eyes are not deceiving you. I am finally updating this story, and I’m hoping that the issues that forced me to put this story on hiatus will not happen again. Once I worked through that, I had other personal problems to face. My mother’s death was one of them; I had to really step back from a lot of things because of it. It’s been two years now, but the pain is still incredibly sharp. For those who have been so patient and understanding, I hope you enjoy this.

Chapter Ten – Confrontations of Various Sorts
The suspicion that Dumbledore would seek Sirius out during the first break proved to be true. The wizard approached the trio, who had returned from refreshing themselves with a bracing cup of tea and a short walk to clear their minds for the next portion of the session.
“Sirius, it’s good to see you. There’s an important matter I need to speak with you about,” the Headmaster began but was cut off by the dark haired male.
“Once again, you address me informally as if we were friends, allies, or equals. That is considered poor manners, especially considering the feud against your House,” Sirius drawled, very aware of the eyes of his fellow Wizengamot members watching them.
“Lord Black,” Dumbledore managed to get out respectfully, smothering the urge to grind his teeth. “As I said, there is an important matter I need to discuss with you.”
“What matter would that be,” he asked, eyes glinting dangerously at the other man.
“It’s about young Harry. I know you will be anxious to take custody, but he must remain with Lily’s sister in order to be protected.”
“In their wills, the late Marquess and Marchioness of Orkney gave specific orders that Harkin is not to be placed with the Marchioness’s sister. I assure you that my godson is currently behind the best wards in Great Britain. He is safe and cared for, and Harkin will be educated so that he can fulfill his role within his family’s House and estate properly,” the lord answered, keeping his voice even despite the fact his temper was rising.
“I must protest,” the headmaster said, trying to stay calm and civil. “The boy needs to be housed with someone who shares his mother’s blood with him so Lily’s protections will remain strong. The Death Eaters will be looking for him to finish what Voldemort tried to start.”
“As I said, headmaster, my godson is safe and cannot be harmed. You have no authority regarding where he should be placed,” Sirius reminded him sharply. “His mother insisted he not be placed with her sister, and we shall ensure her wishes are carried out.”
“If Minister Bagnold continues with her astounding work, there will not be very many Death Eaters left alive who are loyal to Voldemort,” Lucius reminded the headmaster. “The young marquess should not have any problems from those who were within Voldemort’s ranks, and I know Viscount Black will ensure his godson will be trained so that Lord Potter will not be harmed by anyone who carries a grudge against him while he is in school.”
It was obvious that Dumbledore was not pleased with their words, and Sirius ended the conversation easily by slipping past him to return to the court room so the trials could be resumed. The break was quickly approaching its end anyway, and the trio had no wish to continue the conversation with the man who had caused so much grief to their families.
“Can you believe his nerve,” Callidora murmured as soon as they were out of earshot of the headmaster.
“His arrogance continues to grow,” Lucius acknowledged. “My father often said that he felt Dumbledore suffered from delusions of grandeur since he was accredited with the defeat of Grindlewald. Truthfully, I am not certain if Dumbledore actually did what he said he did. I know Grindlewald is in prison, which surprises me considering everything he did while in power. One would think the governments of the magical world would have sentenced the man to death for the atrocities he committed. I remember reading that many people protested the decision, but there was no action taken in regards to the protests.”
“I remember my father and grandfather talking about that,” Sirius commented. “They also didn’t believe that his actions merited the positions he was given, and Grandfather often said that a man should not have three positions of power.”
“It would partially explain the deterioration of Hogwarts’ academics since he took over as headmaster,” Callidora agreed. “Classes that are important to the welfare of our society are being removed, and I know that one professor is teaching all seven years of their subject for those who instruct the core classes.”
“It’s true,” the baron replied. “There have been many times I’ve heard Professor Flitwick comment on needing additional help with teaching, but the request never makes it to the board meetings.”
“All requests go through the headmaster, do they not,” the viscount asked, thinking of another way to stymie Dumbledore and finding a way to stop the problems in the British educational system.
“They do,” Lucius answered.
“That explains it,” Sirius said as they took their seats with the rest of the Wizengamot. “I have to wonder what else doesn’t make it to the board because of his interference.”
“Something to research at a later time,” the dowager countess suggested. “Perhaps things need to change regarding the board and how they handle things.”
The trio went silent as Bagnold called the group in session so trials could resume. The minister had sent more auror teams out as additional names had been added to the list of Death Eaters; she wanted them all found and tried, and she was going to get this done.
It was a long and grueling day and once it was done, Sirius had one last meeting to attend and it was one that made him anxious as he knew that this was very important. He bade his cousins farewell and headed to the Leaky Cauldron, going up to a private room he had arranged with Tom earlier so he could hold his meeting.
Sirius used the time to set up privacy wards against any tracking and eavesdropping spells that could be applied to items or people. He also made sure to set up an animagus ward, not wanting to allow anyone to enter who had not been invited.
Once that was done, he anxiously sipped at his tea, setting it down when a familiar figure entered the room. His gray eyes softened at the sight of his best friend, and he rose.
“Remus,” he whispered.
“Padfoot,” the werewolf said, just as softly. “I’m so glad you were able to be given a trial. I didn’t want to believe that you had been the one to betray James and Lily like that.”
Sirius gave the man a hug, relaxing when the strong arms embraced him back. He’d been worried he would lose his remaining dearest friend, and it was a relief to know that Remus believed in him.
“Please, sit,” he said, clearing his throat as he let his friend go and sat down. “There’s a lot we need to talk about, and you’re going to find it difficult to believe.”
Remus sat down, taking a cup of tea when it was handed to him. He could see the mix of emotions on his friend’s face and wondered what had gone on since the death of their dearest friend and his wife.
“Sirius, is Harry all right?”
“He is now,” the dark haired male admitted with a small smile. “Apparently, Lily and James realized that Dumbledore wasn’t as trustworthy as everyone thinks he is and decided to put a back up plan in place in case the worst happened. Petunia got a hold of my cousin, Callidora, and she’s had custody since James and Lily died.”
Amber colored eyes narrowed; he’d caught the significance of his friend’s words and was now focused on the suspicions their deceased friends had towards their old headmaster.
“What’s going on with Dumbledore, Sirius? Usually, James and Lily would never have suspected him of anything but you’re telling me they did.”
Sirius ran a hand over his face before starting in on the story that he’d heard from Callidora and then had experienced for himself. He could see the look of rage forming on Remus’s face when he heard of the magic binding that had been performed on the children as well as everything that Dumbledore had done that had not been in favor of young Harry’s health and happiness.
“And he still insists that our cub needs to be with Lily’s sister even though Lily herself said that Harry was never to be placed with her?”
“Oh yes,” he replied, shaking his head. “We’re quite upset about it; the blood feud declared on his house is also supported by the current lords so he’s in quite a bit of trouble. I am having a difficult time with the fact that he knew I wasn’t the secret keeper but said nothing to keep me out of Azkaban. It was my cousin who got the ball rolling to get me out of there. He would have kept quiet so he wouldn’t lose control over Harry.”
“He’s got to be fuming over the blood feud keeping him further away from our cub,” Remus said, a low growl in his voice. “The Matriarch Call for Vengeance is one of the few rituals that cannot be worked around legally. It’s pure magic, which he cannot subvert.”
“Exactly,” Sirius answered with a slow smirk. “Some of the oldest houses were part of that, and that makes it even more damaging against him.”
“I assume you have plans,” he asked his friend. “I know you too well, and you’ve got other schemers involved.”
“We have some in progress and some still in planning stages,” the viscount stated. “I think we could always use another maurader in the mix to help with everything. What do you say?”
“I say you have another person to help,” Remus said in a fierce tone of voice. “No one hurts our cubs, and we’ll protect all of them.”
“That we will, Mister Mooney, that we will.”
Author’s End Note – It’s short but hopefully, it’s enough to help get this story going again. I’ve had so much trouble with it so I’m hoping everyone will enjoy it. Please let me know what you think of it. See you next time! ~ Laran
