Chapter 10
Enlarging the chair Harry was seated in, Sirius slid in beside him and helped to make sure that he was upright completely. Putting his arm around him, he held him there and sighed. This was more than 48 hours since the almost non-stop sleeping had begun and he needed some answers, desperately. Whatever was going on was affecting him and Tom, both, heavily by now. Though they had something stronger to help keep them awake, they were still plenty tired. As Harry was the first to exhibit the symptoms and seemed like he was affected the worst, he was the one that he had to get answers out of.
Rubbing his godson's head, Sirius said, “Harry, I really need you to take this potion so I can ask you some questions. Something is wrong and you're the only one that can give us a hint what it is. To do that, though, I need you awake. This isn't normal. I get you're tired, but you've slept almost non-stop for the last two days and are still tired. That tells me something is really off here.” He didn't think Harry would fight him over this, but wanted him to understand why he was doing this as well.Reaching up and rubbing his gritty eyes with a trembling hand, something that took a supreme effort as he was so exhausted, Harry sighed then asked, “What kind of potion? And how can it help?” Oh, he trusted Sirius and would take whatever from him, he just wanted to know. Looking down at the plate of food in front of him, he shook his head. He wasn't hungry. All he wanted to do was crawl back into bed and go to sleep. He knew he needed a shower as well, but just didn't have the energy to get up and take one. It was a sure bet that if he tried, he would fall asleep in the middle of it.“It's a stronger version of Pepper-Up, nothing at all harmful. I've tried giving you Pepper-Up, but it didn't do any good. This should keep you awake long enough for me to get the answers I need. After I do, you can go back to sleep again.” Glancing at his godson's plate, he sighed when Harry didn't seem like he was making an effort to eat. “That and I need you to eat more than you have. I'm sure that how little you've consumed isn't helping whatever this is. If you don't like what's here, the elves can bring you whatever you want. Just, please, for me, eat more than half the plate. I'm really worried about you.”Sighing heavily, Harry leaned against his godfather, sure he couldn't stay upright on his own then nodded, though that took a supreme effort. “I'll take whatever it is.” Eying his overly full plate, something that looked too overwhelming to try to finish, he added, “Can I just get a roast beef sandwich, some mashed and milk? Not big portions. That—what's there is just too much.”“Easily,” Sirius said, calling an elf then sending the creature off with the order of what Harry wanted, something that appeared in under a minute. Summoning the potion, he said, “Take this first. Then start eating. While you do that, I'll ask questions. I swear, nothing horrible. We just need some answers so we can figure out what's going on and how to fix it.”With a slightly shaking hand, Harry downed the potion then almost instantly felt more alert than he had in the last couple days. Oh, he was still tired, no doubt there, but he felt like he could function better. Tearing up his sandwich, he began to eat, though he really had no appetite for it. “What do you want to know?” He asked in a decidedly weary voice. All he really wanted was to go back to sleep again, nothing more.Stroking Harry's head, Sirius assured him, “Remember, this is me asking. You can tell me anything and there is no poking fun about it. I just want to understand, nothing more. If I know, we might be able to fix it.” Seeing Harry nod while mostly poking at his food, Sirius encouraged him to eat while he began asking questions. He didn't know how long he had before Harry conked out again, so he wanted this done quickly. Then he would help his godson get a shower. Though he expected sleep to take Harry again soon, he wanted the 'normal' to keep up. That would probably only help him get over whatever this was.
Groaning as he rubbed his eyes, Tom checked the time to see if he could take more of the potion. He was doing better with it, though he was still tired. At least he could get plenty accomplished before it started wearing off. He just hoped Black could get Harry awake enough to get him to down some of it so they could get answers, as whatever this was seemed like it was originating with Harry.
Pleased that it was time to down more, he did so then looked up as Nagini said his name. Watching his familiar slither his way, he waited until she was draped in her usual place on his shoulders before giving her head a stroke. Looking at her, he asked, “Is there something you need or do you just want to be in here with me?” He asked because she normally left him alone while he was working as he couldn't pay attention to her, so he assumed there was something she needed to discuss with him. As she was a snake, it never took that long and was usually something he could handle easily then get back to work.“There is, yes,” she told him. “It's important as well. I just don't know how to explain it to you.”Nodding, he wondered what this could be about as it was odd for her. “What's the topic, if I may ask?”“Harry,” she sighed, resting her head on Tom's shoulder.“What about him?” Tom asked, now highly curious. As Nagini wasn't human and had more 'tools' at her disposal to sense things than humans did, she could be picking up on something he and Black couldn't to help determine what was going on with the youngest of them. If she had clues, the two of them could probably piece them together and help with the mess.“There is something wrong with him, like he's ill, but that's not fully right,” the snake told him. With a hissy sigh, she admitted, “That's the only way I know to describe what I'm sensing from him.”Honing in on that, Tom asked, “Ill as in physically?” If that was the case, he hoped it wasn't serious because he had no way to get the lad to a Healer or get one here without revealing the secret. He could do a passable job for some more minor illnesses, but not much beyond that. There was also how any illness might affect him and Black. As they still didn't know much about this bond, and what it could do, that was a real concern. That meant he had to suss out what Nagini was picking up on.“No, it's not a physical kind. Those I would know about and it wouldn't be confusing like this is,” the snake told him, looking at him. “This is—I've not sensed it before on anyone, so I don't know how to describe it to you other than it does seem like an illness of some kind. I think that's why he's sleeping all the time, but can't be sure.”Though now wary about what this was, Tom was pleased it wasn't something physical that might lead to a nightmare. Nodding to let her know he understood, he began to ask questions to see if he couldn't figure out what she was sensing. As she wasn't as articulate as a human when it came to so much, and it would be worse as she hadn't encountered it before, this was going to take some work to get it out of her. He would manage in the end. At the very least, he would have clues he could put together. Black was going to attempt to get out of Harry what was going on with his end, so the two of them might be able to sort out what was going on when it came to what both said.
Stepping into the room Sirius and Harry shared, Tom's eyes immediately went to the bed. As expected, Harry was out cold. Sirius was sitting there with the young wizard's head in his lap, stroking his head, looking worried. Conjuring a chair by the bed, he took a seat then asked, “Were you able to get anything out of him? If not, I might have some clues.”
“I was,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “What do you have? I'll take that and meld it with what I got, though I think I have the answer.”Quickly, Tom explained what he was able to get from Nagini. When he finished, he shrugged then told him, “That's the best I can manage from her. She's not like we are with cognitive reasoning. What she goes by are her senses. I do believe what she's describing is depression of some kind as it's an emotional 'illness'.”“And it shores up what I was able to get out of him,” Sirius sighed, looking down at his godson. “He's not one to talk about what he feels or things like that, but what he described to me, coupled with how he talked about the situation we're in fully sinking in, tells me depression. And that I can completely understand,” he finished, grousing slightly. Shrugging, he added, “I think this is Harry's way of dealing with it, the sleeping. While we all know, realistically, that this isn't breakable, I think he held out hope it was until that bit in the library. That's when it hit him it isn't.”Groaning, Tom nodded, looking at the sleeping Harry. “Now comes the question of what do we do about it. If it were just him that it's affecting, I would say to let him work it out himself. It's not, though, and is affecting both of us as well. That we can't have. We also can't keep taking a potion to keep us even slightly functional. Though the addiction rate for this one is really low, if we keep going, we're both going to end up hooked. Anything stronger has a higher probability for addiction.” That's where he stopped and waited to see what Sirius said.Any other time he would just dictate what they were going to do, but this was one he couldn't as Black would fight him every step of the way if he didn't like his suggestions. They didn't need that on top of everything else either. Since none of them had any idea of what the bond might do if that happened, he didn't want to chance it. He also didn't want to chance Black finding out his real position in the bond either. This could end up revealing that.Rubbing a hand over his face then scratching his goatee, Sirius sighed as he tried to think what to do about this mess. Though he hated to admit it, the evil git was right. This was a delicate dance with plenty riding on what they did, from all ends. The git had more to do, most of it he really didn't want to know about, but so did he and Harry. The bond alone, and figuring out what was coming from it, needed researched. Then there was protecting themselves. That was big with him being wanted. There was plenty else as well. Oh yes, something needed done. The question was what.Shaking his head, looking down at Harry, he asked, tone weary, “Any suggestions? I know there are potions for depression, but I have no idea which ones work for what as there are different kinds of depression. And I sure as hell don't like the idea of giving him something.”“I think that this is a case of needs must*,” Tom sighed. “I've come up with a couple that I think might work. At least they'll minimize some symptoms until he can get a handle on it. That we need. Other than that, from what I read, talking it out will help. I'm not sure even you can manage that with him. In this case, my thought was Nagini. He can talk privately with her about much of what's troubling him without you understanding it. I'll also make it clear to her that she's not to say anything to me about whatever is discussed.”Thinking it over, Sirius sighed, head dropping back and eyes going shut. He hated this idea, plenty, but loathed what could come of it even worse. If this continued on, it might grow worse. That they didn't need on top of everything else. Because if it grew worse, he had no idea how it would affect him and Tom. They were already dealing with the one symptom, they didn't need the others. Though he wouldn't say it aloud, it would probably cause him massive problems because of the long-term exposure to the Dementors. He already had 'issues' because of them, those needed no help in growing worse. As complex as this situation was, they needed nothing making it even worse. Sighing, he finally said, “You get your hands on them and I'll get him to take 'em. At first, I doubt it'll be a problem. Later on it will. And have the snake start talking to him. I'll do what I can on my end.”“I'll procure them today,” Tom told him, not mentioning he already had done just that and was waiting to see what Black said then how he might fight it. “Then he can start taking them. I'll also get in contact with someone I know that works in the medical field. No names will be mentioned, of course, but I'll get out of him what might work better.”“You do that and I'll start on my end to see what I can do,” Sirius nodded with a sigh. “I'm going to suggest getting him out of this room, no matter how tired he is. Even sitting outside dozing in the sun can help. Anything to get him out of the bed and the room, even if he doesn't want to participate and grouses.” Tom added. “I'll talk it over with Nagini and make sure she pops up to talk to him. Though I doubt it'll be much at first, it'll be a start.”“I'll do what I can with him,” Sirius assured the evil arse. “Just let me deal with it my way and we'll go from there.” Looking at the man, he said, “We've got to find more on this bond, all there is to it. This was blindsiding enough that it tells me there is plenty more coming that might be worse.”“While I agree, I'm doing all I can. What I'm coming up with is getting us nothing,” Tom shot back, realizing Black was right, but having little other recourse of where to look. “Unless you know somewhere to look that I don't, we're stuck until I can find something.”“I do, but it's out,” Sirius said softly, shaking his head.Wondering what Black was talking about, Tom pondered that until it hit him. “Albus?” he asked simply.“Albus,” Sirius confirmed with a nod of his head.“No chance,” Tom snarled, straightening up, his eyes flashing. Crossing his arms over his chest, he huffed, “He will not be involved!”“I figured, but that's all I have,” Sirius admitted, glaring at the git for the tone. “He's got resources and knowledge we don't, so I'm damned sure that he can find whatever we haven't.”“Be that as it may, he is not getting involved,” Tom snapped, eyes hardening. However, in the back of his mind he wondered if he couldn't poke Severus to see what the man could produce on what happened. As that would seem normal for him, it might be something he would try. “Let me see what else I can manage to get information then we'll go from there. If the old goat can get it, so can we. It'll just take time.”“I don't see that we have much more of that before we end up being blindsided again,” Sirius shot right back. “This bit is bad enough. It can't be all that's coming.”“Very true,” Tom admitted, shaking his head. “Let me do what I can to find out. I may have another way.”“We need something,” Sirius told him with a groan. Not wanting to argue the point, though pondering getting another message out, or trying, to at least let Albus know what they needed, he was wondering if it would do any kind of good as he had no way of getting anything in the way of a response. That he would think over.Standing, Tom said, not wanting to argue that anymore, “I'll get my hands on the potions then send them to you with instructions on doses.” Nodding to Black before he could say anything, he swept out, hoping like hell this helped, because the sleepiness couldn't be allowed to continue.“Arse,” Sirius snarled at the door after it was shut then sighed softly. Looking down at Harry, who hadn't budged an inch, he said, tone weary, “I hate this, I want you to know that now, but I don't see any other way, Harry. If I did, we'd be doing that. You might get mad at me now, but it can only help. I swear that once you're over this bit, they'll stop. You have my word.” Though not feeling better about it, he would do just as he said.
Looking over the grounds of the back yard from the patio, Sirius sighed. It did feel good out here as it was one of those nice, not overly warm, days with a wonderful breeze that was rustling the fallen leaves. Glancing to his side, he saw Harry still in the same position, curled up on the bench, though seated upright, leaning against him, asleep. He had given the first dose of those potions to his godson right after they were brought to him. Even though he knew there wouldn't be an immediate effect from them, he hoped for something, anything, to show they were helping. There was nothing. It was the same. Harry was still sleeping. At the moment, his godson was still in his pyjamas, though he made sure he had socks and slippers on. He had gotten him awake long enough to get him out here, then Harry fell right back to sleep, not bothering to look around.
Giving Harry a squeeze then kissing him on top of the head, Sirius sighed. He wanted this to end for more reasons than what brought it on. Without Harry to talk to, he only had himself to deal with the situation they were in. That was bringing on a bit of panic, honestly. He did fine when Harry was awake, as that gave him someone else around to help focus on. With Harry sleeping all the time, he felt worse and like the situation was overwhelming. He didn't need that.Shutting his eyes, head going back, he groaned. He didn't need this, he really didn't. Since the escape from Azkaban, he'd had problems when it came to depression himself, especially when he was alone. Harry, though he never said anything, was there for him as much as he was for his godson. No one else, not even Remus, thought to do so much as ask how he was doing though they knew how horrific it must have been in that prison. They seemed to just assume that he was strong enough that he didn't let it bother him. It did, though, more than he would ever let on. Talking to Harry, either in person or through those mirrors, helped because not only did his godson ask how he was, he meant it when he would say he worried about him. That he didn't buy from anyone else anymore. Only Harry. And when Harry came across with that it helped more than his godson ever knew. Harry also gave him an outlet to talk about some parts, even if he did it in the guise of other things that would help his godson. Now he didn't have that for the first time in a while and it made what was going on all the more difficult. No, it wasn't for more than a couple of days, but it was still there. He and Harry leaned on each other and he didn't want to have to go this nightmare alone for any longer than necessary.Giving the sleeping Harry a squeeze, he said, softly, “I need you, Harry. More than you will ever know. So, please come back to me. I know it's bad, you don't have to tell me that, but we'll get through it together. You lean on me to help you get through what you're dealing with and I'll do the same with what I am. It won't be fun, but we already know that. We'll get through, though, just like we always have. I just need you awake to help me get through it, too. Honestly? I think you're the only one that really cares about me anymore. Remus says he does, but he tends to wallow in self pity enough that he doesn't see most things. Then he expects me to help him out. Albus swears he does, but his actions show something else. Everyone else doesn't bother. You're it. So, I need you. You need me, that I know. We just need each other. Together we'll be fine. I just need you awake, Harry. Even depressed, as long as you're awake, we'll be fine and manage. We'll talk out whatever the problem is and you'll feel better. You know your secrets are safe with me, just like they've always been. If you can't confide in me, talk to Nagini. The git promised she would do that. As she seems to like you, that should be easy enough.”Sighing, shutting his eyes, giving Harry yet another squeeze, he said, “We're in this together, all the way. Keep that in mind. We'll manage to make it through. We've been through too much in our lives for this to end it. How? I don't have a clue there, honestly, but we will. Don't worry. I'll always protect you, just like I have since I could do that again and you'll be there for me like you've been. We keep that up and nothing will get to us.” Softly, he then added, “You just have to come back to me to do that, nothing more.” That's where he stopped. He was sure that Harry heard him somehow and that it planted the seed. That's all he was going for. Well, that and making himself feel a bit better about this. Harry would come back, he reassured himself. He wouldn't leave him alone. It would just take time. As he had all of that in the world, he would manage until then.
