Remus was walking through the hallways of the school that he had been teaching at for going on eleven years now. It was a place that had accepted him for what he was, a werewolf and a lost man. They knew that he had more or less run-away from his life in England and yet no one pushed or prodded him in to talking about his past or what it was that sent him away. He had dated a few times even had one serious relationship with another coworker before she went on to a private all-witches school. His life there had been good so far and he knew that if he chose to stay he would have a job for life with no questions asked but there were still a few things that he wanted to do before he settled in to a comfortable life with the same career.
He had been called to the Headmistresses office to talk about the resignation letter he had sent her via owl the night before. He knocked on her door and she called him in, she stood behind the desk looking at him sadly. She was a woman of probably about ninety though like any true witch she looked maybe late fifties. She had straw colored blond hair that had a touch of silver to it, kind sky blue eyes that he knew could be firm and even scary when they wanted to be, she stood at nearly 5’9” tall and was slim. She had the sort of look that one would expect of an old British school teacher, the kind that looked mean but really had a heart of gold. She was one of his most treasured friends at the school now and he hoped his decision to leave the school to pursue his education wouldn’t make her hate him.
“Remus” She said, her voice was soft and calm like it always was but there was a hint of determined sadness there, it was like she knew that his mind was made up but she would try to beg him to stay no matter what “I got your letter last night”
“My resignation” He confirmed “Yes”
“Remus” She said again “The students all love you, the staff adores you. If it’s about pay, I can get you a raise”
“It’s not the pay” He answered.
“If it’s your personal quarters we can change those” She went on “What you’re teaching, we can work that out but leaving...you have so much you can offer the students here, why leave?”
“Ursula” He said evenly “I appreciate this, I really do. This school, you, the students and the staff have all been great to me and accepted me when no one else in the world would” He took a deep breath “But I wanted to go to college. I want to get my Masters in Defense, then I want to see where life moves me...weather I come back here or go home or what”
“I understand” Ursula told him sadly “You’ve been accepted I take it so where are you going?”
“Wizarding University in America” He answered “They caught my attention with all that they offer”
“I have some friends there” She told him “I will write a letter of recommendation to get you in the harder to get in to classes, if you like?”
“I would like that” Remus answered “Thank you”
“So this will be your last year?” She confirmed.
“Yes” He answered and she frowned.
“I will miss you” She said while he walked out the door, he looked back at her and smiled.

Lidia and Severus, the Head Boy and Girl sat in their shared common room studying together. There was an advantage to taking all the same classes because now they can work together, quiz each other and complain to one another when there was too much work. Lidia sighed and leaned back in her couch, it was already October and there was only eight months left before the end of school. She was a good student but between studying, writing to Kale, worrying about college and just trying to be a teenager she felt as if she were being pulled in three different directions. She looked over at her studying friend and felt that she was actually seeing him for the first time. His hair was black and spiky and all over the place, though she wasn’t sure if he meant it to be that way, his eyes were pale green and kind though he hid his kindness well. He was tall and very pale, he was elegant in a way and his voice though not as deep as say Severus Snapes (who Lidia loved to listen to) but when he spoke (which was very rare to anyone other than Lidia) he was just as hypnotic.
“Severus” Lidia asked curiously “Why didn’t we ever date?”
“Because” He answered looking at her like she were crazy “You were always dating Kale”
“Oh” She said “I...did you ever want to date me?”
“Yeah” He answered a little uncomfortably “But...there was no hope”
“I’m sorry” She whispered, she looked over at him as they were sitting side by side, she looked at him and tilted her head to the side “Have you ever dated anyone before?”
“No” He answered “I’ve been busy keeping up with you”
Lidia sat down and pulled her book back towards her sticking her tongue out at him and making him smirk. They went back to their studying in silence but now there was something between them. It was festering between them and making it impossible to study without their minds straying over the past and wondering if maybe there could have been a relationship between them. There was the uncertainty that they wouldn’t be able to see each other after this year, they would never know what could have been or should have been. For once in all her time with Kale she was actually kind of angry with herself for ignoring other people. Hogwarts was the time to date and make mistakes but she had been so desperate to show her parents that she was a responsible adult that she forced herself in to relationship that now she was second guessing.
“Severus” She put her book down “Come here”
“If I come any closer” He pointed out “I’ll be in your lap”
“Face me” She ordered. He turned and looked at her and when she just stared at him he raised an eyebrow, she took a deep breath and leaned forward pressing her lips against his “There” She said “Now you can at least go to college knowing you’ve kissed someone” He put his hand on the side of her neck and pulled her closer kissing her this time, it was the kind of kiss that she was used to with Kale. A kiss that was deep and was almost a full work out to keep up with and when he pulled back she was out of breath.
“Yep” He said with a slight blush “Now I can say that I’ve been properly snogged before college”
“Yeah” She muttered fixing her hair and looking at everything except Severus while her own face was burning with embarrassment, exertion and shame over what she just did “Glad I could help”
“You know” He grinned evilly at her “I’m also a virgin, if you want to help” That did it she burst out laughing.
“I’ll stop at the kiss” Lidia laughed and hit him with a book that she was holding “I have a boyfriend!” Severus nodded with a smirk but mercifully kept his mouth shut.
~~((@))~~May~~((@))~~
The months leading up to May had been horrible, filled with homework, schoolwork, late night patrols, letter writing, meetings with the prefects, tutoring the younger students and then the same thing over and over again. Hogsmead trips were ancient history as she had gone only once that year and that had been the weekend before Halloween, she was burnt out but it was getting better. The way the graduation and all that worked was that she would sit her N.E.W.T’s in three days-time and then when that was done she would spend the next month getting ready to say goodbye to all she had known.
The second week in to May which was after the N.E.W.T’s the students would meet first with their professors as some of them would offer personal scholarships or grants to students they deemed worthy, letters of recommendation to others and sometimes just advice. Then they would meet with the headmistress for the same thing, then with people from the town that were influenced by different students that they wanted to help or offer advice to. Then the last day of that week was spent meeting and talking to the board of trustees for the same reason as the others money and/or advice. That weekend was spent to spending time with a ‘big brother/sister’ type trustee, someone who wanted to talk to the seventh year about their future. It was a good way of digging your nails in to the corporate world if that is your wish, which it was Lidia’s.
The third week was dedicated to finishing up the very last essays that the professors had assigned and finishing the headmistresses essay. It was something that you learned about half-way through your sixth year, the headmaster (in their case headmistress) assigned an essay of his/her choosing that was due the third week of May before they graduated. They were not to talk about the essay, it was to remain a surprise for all the younger students. This year Headmistress Tonks had them write what it was they had learned over their seven years in the castle. The Headmistress would pick out a few of her favorites or inspirational ones to read at graduation for the parents to hear. Lidia half hoped hers would be read and then half hoped that it wouldn’t be, she hadn’t written something amazing and yet she wrote the truth.
The fourth and final week of the month they were to clean their dorm rooms top to bottom. Head boy and girl would clean their dorm rooms and common room so that its completely spotless and ready for the next two students to enter the next term. Then they were to go around to all the houses and offer help cleaning up the seventh year dorms and common rooms. They were also in charge of overseeing the cleaning of the prefect bathrooms, ROR and any other popular hangout point for the students. On Friday of the last week of the month there was the seventh years last dance and the weekend was given to them to pack and tie loose ends together. Monday was a dress rehearsal all day and packing up clothes and whatever else was needed that hadn’t been finished over the weekend, Tuesday was the reading of the Wills, the advice that the seventh years left to the underclassmen. On Wednesday they would gradate and leave Hogwarts for good, they would have the restrictions lifted from their wands and they would be adults, finally.
~~((@))~~
Taking the N.E.W.T’s had been a long and grueling process but she and all the other seventh years had gotten through it with minimal damage. The following week had her receiving almost enough scholarships and grants to pay for two years of college. She could at least say that one year was completely paid for as was half of the second year, Severus made out pretty well having two full years paid for with grants and scholarships. The third week everything was handed in to the correct professors and to the headmistress and the last week she was busy cleaning and awaiting her dress to be sent to her by her mother for Friday, she was also awaiting the letter that would tell her the time that Kale would show up for her last dance. The dress arrived on Wednesday and was just as perfect as she remembered it was in December when she first saw it while Christmas shopping with her mother. The letter arrived at noon while she was eating lunch with Severus on Thursday, she smiled brightly but the smile grew dimmer and dimmer and then she stood with a low sob and walking out of great hall leaving the letter on the table. He frowned and picked it up to see what had happened.
Lidia-
I hope that your final year is as awesome as mine was. I miss you a lot and am really busy here, college isn’t all fun and games like I hoped it would be and now I’m cramming for finals. That is why I’m writing, I won’t be able to come to the dance and for that I apologize but I know that we’re going to have a great summer before college, you never did tell me where you’re going. Hope to see you coming to France with me come August.
Love, Kale.
“That prick!” Severus snapped “Can’t he see what he has?” He stood and made his way to the common room he shared with Lidia and found her sitting by herself on the couch watching the empty fireplace. There were dried tears on her cheeks and her hands were shaking but there was a look on her face that said she was lost.
“Lidia” He sat down near her with the letter clutched in his hand “He’s a jerk...”
“He’s cheating on me” Lidia said “And why wouldn’t he?” She started to cry “I’m...not good enough”
“You’re better” Severus assured her “If he is cheating on you, which there is no proof of that, but if he is then he is the stupidest guy alive”
“Why do you say that?” She asked.
“Because” He answered “Who wouldn’t want to be with you. You’re smart and funny, charismatic and strong...if he is cheating on you it’s because he knows that he’s not good enough for you”
“But why does is hurt so much?” She asked “If he’s not cheating on me, why does this hurt so much?”
“Because he promised you that he would bring you and now he’s broken that promise” Severus said, pulling her closer against his chest and just holding her. She made small conversation while they laid there, mostly about her dress and what a waste it was now “Okay” He told her lifting her up to look at her “I’m going to take you to the dance”
“No” She said “You probably already have plans, don’t changed them on my account”
“I was going to escort my beautiful self” Severus told her “But I think I understand” She laughed at that.
“Are you sure?” She asked.
“Yeah” He answered “I wasn’t going to give it up to me tonight anyway”
“You’re terrible” She laughed, her laughter finally wiping away the last traces of sadness from her beautiful face.
“I know, I know” He said “But I like to have me chase me”

Lidia and Delilah were getting ready in the Head Girls dorm room. Delilah had been dutifully angry with Kales rather cold letter and told Lidia that she should set him on fire when she sees him next. Of course Lidia told her that she couldn’t do that and it wasn’t his fault he had finals and yet she knew that she had already wrote her daddy a letter telling him what Kale did because she needed his advice...she possibly she wanted him to set him on fire when he came home during the summer as well but that was only if he read between the lines. She turned and looked at her friend as she was just finishing up her own make-up and Delilah always left it up to her to make sure that she looked her best before she left the dorm room.
Delilah had her long chestnut hair curled but left down as she always wore it up on every other day, her golden brown eyes were lined with eyeliner and her lips were painted to match her beautiful light pink dress that had spaghetti straps and was tight around the bust (which she had magically enhanced a year before) and tied under her breasts but then it flared straight down to her feet and she wore matching kitten heels. She wore a diamond choker that her parents had sent her and earrings that her boyfriend of the week got her. She was an absolute beauty tonight as she always was and Lidia told her so which she giggled, spun in place and then set to do Lidia’s hair like a true friend. She styled her hair so that it was simply pulled back with a silver headband and her black curls were raining down her bared back. She was dressed in the gown her mother had sent her on Wednesday it was a blue-green color that matched her eyes perfectly. It was an off the shoulder gown, with an empire waist and a low-scoop back, made of chiffon and floor-length with a longer train. It was rather simple dress but it made her feel like a princess and she liked the feel of floating while she walked in it. She didn’t wear heels in this because she was afraid of the heel getting caught on the dress and making her trip down the stairs and break something. She was wearing strappy flat sandals and no jewelry at all, but her make-up light and perfect and her perfume was the usual sunflower/sunshine fragrance she’s always used.
Severus was waiting for her in the common room when she came down the stairs. He was dressed in a black button down shirt and slacks that his father sent him last minute that morning. It looked like he had attempted to tame his hair but to no avail, he was smirking at her but she could see the quivering of his Adams apple which happened when he was nervous. He fiddled with something in his hands and when she got closer he held out his hands to her and she saw a beautiful silver bracelet with light blue diamonds in it and she looked at him in shock.
“When they started this” Severus explained “Back in my mums seventh year it was like an unwritten rule that the date would bring a piece of jewelry to his girlfriend”
“But...” She started.
“I know” He said “I am not your boyfriend but I am your date and I will make sure that this is done right”
“But how” She looked at the beautiful bracelet now sitting delicately on her wrist.
“I bought in December” He told her “But I didn’t have the guts to give it to you, I was going to offer it up instead as a graduation gift but this seemed better”
“Thank you” She said pulling him in to a hug “And tonight” She whispered “You are my boyfriend”
The dance was in full swing when they got there and they spent much of the time dancing and talking with all their friends. That night the walk back to their shared common room felt a little more intimate then it should have because this night was like a muggle prom. All couples were having sex after the dance...everyone except Severus and Lidia of course. Reentering the common room Lidia let out a loud sigh and she took her shoes off telling Severus that she was changing and would be back out in a few minutes. When she came back to the common room he had beat her there wearing a pair of black sleeper pants and a black sleeveless shirt. She plopped down in her own shorts and tank top and looked at him, making a face and laughing at his face as well as shaking her head.
“Thank you, Severus” She said suddenly “You didn’t need to bring me, didn’t need to dance with me or give me the bracelet but you did”
“I think you’d find” Severus told her “There is little I wouldn’t do for you” She looked at him for a minute turning his words over and over in her brain.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” She asked, tears in her eyes “Had you asked or hinted that you were interested I would have said yes”
“I guess I was just scared” He admitted, he reached forward and ran his fingers through her hair tugging playfully on the strand that was between his forefinger and thumb “It’s easier now because I know that after the next five days I’ll be too busy to see you and then I’ll be in Italy and you’ll be in America. So the fact that you don’t feel the same way wouldn’t matter...”
Lidia moved closer and pressed her lips against his, everything in her told her not to do this to not be that girl and yet she couldn’t push the nagging feeling that Kale was already wrapped up in someone else away. He never came home for Christmas holiday though he promised, she asked if she could visit him and he got all jumpy and strange, he stopped answering most of her letters and then the dance just topped it all off. She knew that two wrongs didn’t make it right but here she had someone who honestly cared for her someone that loved her...it had been even longer than just this past year since she felt that someone actually loved her for her. They stopped many times to say that they couldn’t go any further, then they kissed, they would part and promise to leave the room and spend the rest of the night apart...but then they kissed again. Everything about Severus was unsure, untouched territory, it wasn’t just that it was wrong but that he was not touched by another that made it a heady and completely intoxicating passion.
~~((@))~~Tuesday Evening~~((@))~~
The night of the Will reading to the school progressed the way anyone would assume it would have, people left good advice, bad advice and books, classrooms, snogging areas and even professors to other students. Lidia sat between Delilah and Severus, her hand rested in his which was rested in his lap. Occasionally he would raise her hand to his lips and kiss her knuckles then lower her hand again and go back to watching the front of the great hall. When he was called up he merely told them all to study hard but to make sure not to miss out on the most important things in life. He looked at Lidia when he told them not to miss the chance to do something crazy or life changing. Lidia stood when it was her turn and made her way to the front of the room, they were the last ones to go because of their status, she turned and looked at the room. She had a whole speech written but after Friday night none of it seemed to make any sense anymore.
“I would like to leave a bit of knowledge that it took me seven years to learn” Lidia said, her voice strong and carrying over the sea of underclassmen as well as her peers “Trust your instincts and don’t allow your fears or the words of others, even your family, to make your mind up on a situation” She smiled sadly “If you want to date someone tell them, you want to break-up with someone then do it and if you want to take a class that your parents think is stupid take it anyway because in the end the only person that needs to be happy with your decisions is you” She looked at them for a minute “When it’s time to make some of the hardest choices of your life just remember that only you need to make it. Take suggestions if it pleases you and do all the research that you can but make sure it is what you truly want to do. Thank you”
She walked away to a standing ovation and she smiled as Delilah hugged her tightly whispering how much she was going to miss her. She and Severus walked back to the common room again but this time it would be the last night they spent in there, tomorrow while the underclassmen went about their term finals they would be graduating. Severus stopped her outside of the common room and pulled her front against his, he pressed her forehead to his and just looked at her. Nothing needed to be said because their eyes spoke volumes, what happened Friday night wouldn’t happen again no matter how much they loved each other. Even Severus told her that though he did love her he wasn’t sure if they were meant to be or not, she answered that they probably weren’t supposed to be, that he was to be her personal torment and nothing more. He smiled and went in to the common room leaving her in the hallway looking around the drafty old castle, she learned to be her own person here, to be strong and boy would she miss it.
~~((@))~~
“Granger” Scorpius whispered as they watched a few classmates go up and get their restrictions removed from their wands as well as say their farewells at the graduation “You going to become a Weasley baby machine after this?”
“Shove off, Malfoy” Severus growled at him.
“Come on” He pressed “You know that you want to, it’s what you’ve been waiting your whole life to be...a Weasley whore”
“Next” Headmistress Nymphadora Tonks called “We have Scorpius Malfoy who will be going off to study business in Germany”
Lidia looked over at her father and smiled at him and he nodded back at her. She fixed her eyes on Scorpius and smiled a sweet smile as he stood at the podium for his farewell speech. She wiggled her fingers gently and blew out a warm breath that caused Malfoy’s robes flutter not that he noticed as he went on about how he was going to miss everyone and hoped they all got what they wanted from life. He stepped forward from behind the podium and over to the ministry official that held his own wand to the tip of Malfoy’s and there was a red light that lifted from the wand as the restriction was lifted and he said something to the boy. The ministry official offered advice to all the graduating students as he took the spell off the wands and whatever he said to Malfoy caused him to look confused. But then he turned to the crowd and screamed “I’M FINALLY FREE” and ripped open his Slytherin green graduating robe (they had to wear a graduating robe in their house color) to reveal that he was completely naked underneath. He looked confused again as everyone laughed and pointed and his father looked angrier than anyone had ever seen before. He looked down then quickly covered up looking around he saw the small pile of black ash behind the podium. His eyes locked on Lidia and she gave a small smirk before schooling her expression to be just as shocked as everyone else.
“I apologize” The headmistress said with a small grin “For that rather...small display” That made everyone burst out laughing except for Draco who was shooting daggers at his brightly blushing son and Pansy who was stuck between amusement or horror “Last but never the least we have our Head Girl; Lidia Granger who will be attending a University in America come fall”
“Hello” Lidia said as she stood at the podium discreetly kicking the ashes away “I must apologize as well, I will not be ripping my robes off to reveal my nakedness underneath, call me a coward if you like” That made everyone laugh a little “I want to thank my professors for helping me with everything, my friends for being there and even my enemies for helping me become stronger. My mother told me that the best feeling in the world would be when I graduate from Hogwarts” She looked at Hermione who was crying “But she lied. The best feeling in the world was entering Hogwarts, leaving it is both the most terrifying and the saddest thing I will ever do, but I’m sure it’s worth it. Good luck everyone, I have a feeling that we’ll need it”
She walked over to the ministry official and smiled at him, he was a jolly looking middle-aged man that smiled brightly back at her. She couldn’t help but feel that this man was perfect for his job, who would want to see a grumpy old man on their graduation day but to see someone who looked as happy as you are, that’s a completely different tale. She held her wand up and he waved his over it and then touched the tip of his wand to hers and she watched as the charm was lifted from her wand. She was now officially graduated from Hogwarts, when the restriction on ones wand was lifted it meant that you were a fully, legal functioning witch (or wizard) and that you are an adult.
“Magic” He told her “Doesn’t always come from a wand, remember that it has many shapes, forms and abilities”
“Thank you” She said and walked away from him down the stairs and back to her spot.
“This concludes the end of our graduation” Tonks said “The beginning of the graduates new lives, I read some of the essays that were handed in earlier but it was the Head Girls that caught my attention” She pulled out Lidia’s parchment “It caught my attention for a few reasons. One reason was because I asked for a three page essay on what they learned over the last seven years, another reason was because it was way too short and the last reason was because in the whole tiny essay she said what no one else said in all the pages they wrote, so this is the whole essay she gave me” There was crumpling of parchment and she looked down at it “ ‘Headmistress Tonks, you’ve asked me to write what I have learned here in seven years but I highly doubt you want to read three pages of filler words so weather this is right or wrong here it is. What I learned in my seven years at Hogwarts was how to be an adult’ that was all she wrote and thank you Lidia, because that is what we are going for when you are attending this school. Congratulations graduates, you are all fully trained witches and wizards”
Lidia walked over to her parents and all her friends did the same. Loki met her first and pulled her against him rubbing her back, he then kissed her cheek and pulled back to look at the woman before him. His little girl was grown up, he felt his throat tighten and tears sting his eyes, he cleared his throat and looked away from her all too knowing eyes before he made a fool of himself. Hermione wasn’t holding her emotions back as she sobbed in to her shoulder and told her how beautiful she was and even Thor looked emotional as he hugged her. They apperated home and after her stuff was put away in her room she found herself looking at her mother who was standing in the doorway with her hand on her chest.
“I haven’t been an amazing mother” Hermione said then shushed her when she attempted to say otherwise “I pushed you too much and expected miracles where there were none to be found. For all that I apologize to you but I want you to know Lidia, I am so proud of the woman you’ve turned in to and I will miss you when you leave to go to America”
“I love you” Lidia whispered as she pushed herself in to her mothers arms sobbing.
“I love you too” Hermione told her “And I’m sorry that I couldn’t get Kale here for your graduation”
“It doesn’t matter” Lidia said but she looked down “Not anymore”
A/N: Sorry it was so long. But its hard to fit a whole year and all the important stuff in one chapter. Anyway, sorry if I glossed over too much and the whole Lidia thing with Severus... I couldn’t help myself!
