Chapter 10
Hermione awoke the next morning to Eridanus' cries. Rather reluctantly, she attempted to untangle herself from Sirius' arms. That feat was more difficult than she had anticipated, though, as Sirius had wrapped his arms around her so tightly; she was surprised she could still breathe.
Ten minutes later, she had finally gotten up out of the bed. Turning, she smiled as Sirius let out a snore. Her getting out of bed didn't even wake him.
Hermione slowly made her way to Eridanus' room and entered it. "Hi baby," she cooed when she saw him standing in his crib, his chubby little fists holding onto the railing.
"Mumma," Eridanus said, reaching up for her.
Scooping him up, Hermione gently kissed his noise. She then fed and changed him before checking the time.
It was six in the morning. "Might as well go downstairs," Hermione said with a sigh. She carried Eridanus down the stairs, placing him on the ground once they reached the bottom. He took off, racing towards the kitchen.
"Hey little guy," Harry's voice rang out.
Smiling, Hermione entered the kitchen, taking a seat at the table.
"Tea?" Harry asked her, while pouring himself a cup.
"Yes please," she replied, leaning her elbows on the table. She felt exhausted.
Harry handed her a cup, sliding the sugar and cream towards her. "You okay? You look pretty tired," he commented, placing Eridanus in his hair chair. He got out some crackers and placed them in front of Eri. Harry then took his seat next to Hermione.
"No… yes… ugh," she sighed. "Harry, I don't know what to do. Should I accept the teaching position? Or should I find something else to do?"
"I don't know, Mione. You sure you want to leave the Department of Mysteries?"
She was quiet for a moment. "I'm not sure. I thought I did because I had finally gotten Sirius back. I didn't really think much past that."
"Why don't you publish your work? I know you can't exactly do experiments on what you did, but surely there's something you could share?"
"I don't even know what I did though, Harry! I interpreted some of the runes, but honestly, the only explanation is magic."
"Some things in life are just unexplainable," a voice said from the doorway.
Hermione glanced up and saw Sirius standing in the doorway. He was only wearing pajama bottoms, his chest bare for the entire world to see. He arched his eyebrow at her, causing her to flush.
"You're right," she said softly, returning to her tea. She sipped it slowly as Sirius kissed Eridanus. He came over and kissed Hermione before turning to make breakfast.
"I don't know, Hermione, I always saw you doing research. If you want to go to Hogwarts, you can. I'm sure Minerva would appreciate the help."
"Do what makes you happy, kitten," Sirius called over his shoulder from the stove.
"Ugh!" she exclaimed, her head hitting the table. "Someone choose for me."
Harry laughed. "I don't think so. That's part of being grown-up, Hermione, making your own choices."
"I don't want to be grown up," she murmured petulantly.
Sirius let out a snort, earning himself a glare from Hermione.
"It's a bit late for that," Harry gently reminded her, Eridanus cooing as well.
She sighed. "I just don't know what to do."
"Why don't you talk to Perkins about starting a new project? I'm sure if you pitched him something, he'd let you do it. You are Hermione Granger after all," Harry suggested.
"Maybe I will. But what? What could I do that no one else can?"
"Time turners," Sirius suggested, coming over with two bowls of oatmeal. He passed one to Hermione, sitting down next to her. After blowing on it, he offered a small bit to Eridanus. The baby moved his head at the last moment, causing Sirius to smear oatmeal all over his face.
"Sirius!" Hermione exclaimed, laughing. She grabbed a napkin, handing it to him.
"But what were you saying about time turners?" Harry asked.
"Well, I know Hermione has experience with time turners with her younger years, and I heard that the fiasco at the Ministry," Hermione blanched at the mention of that day, "that all the time turners were destroyed. Maybe you could write about reinventing one? Or the properties surrounding time turners?"
Hermione nodded after collecting herself. "I know Minerva actually has the last existing time turner, although the Ministry is unaware of the fact. Maybe I will do some research on time turners."
"You should do it, kitten," Sirius said, gently rubbing her back. "You love academics and I'm sure the idea of discovering something new is exciting to you."
Hermione blushed. "Yes, that does sound rather exciting." Her voice has taken on a husky tone.
Leaning down, Sirius gently kissed her. "Do it, love. I'm sure Minerva won't mind."
"But what about you? I don't want you to go to Hogwarts to teach without me! I don't want to be away from you anymore, Sirius," she cried, wrapping her arms around him tightly. Tears welled up in her eyes and she immediately felt childish.
"Don't cry, kitten. I won't leave you, I promise. Okay? Hermione, I'm not going anywhere." He looked into her eyes, the two of them staring at each other.
"There's room for you in the Auror program," Harry interjected, breaking their moment. "Kingsley asked me if you were interested in taking up your old position."
"Old position?" Hermione asked.
"I was an Auror, along with James when we finished school. My Auror days were short lived though, since I was arrested for the incident with Pettigrew."
Hermione reached over and grasped Sirius' hand.
"Good morning," Ginny said, entering the kitchen.
"Morning," Hermione said, smiling at her best girlfriend.
She briefly kissed Harry, before grabbing some cereal and taking a seat. "What have you been talking about?"
"I think I'm going to start a new project with the Department of Mysteries," Hermione explained.
"And I will become an Auror again," Sirius added.
"Oh, that's good," Ginny said, smiling at the both. "To be honest, I couldn't see you leaving Eridanus with the elves, Hermione."
Her eyes widened. "I hadn't thought of that!"
Harry chuckled at her reaction.
"Definitely staying here then… if that's okay?" she asked, glancing around.
"Look at Sirius; this is technically his house again."
Sirius waved his hand. "This is your home, Harry. Technically, we're living with you."
"Technically no, since you're not dead," Harry countered, laughing dryly. "I don't want to impose."
"No, we'll just leave things the way they are, if that's agreeable to you?"
Harry nodded. "I can't imagine living any other way."
"But, there are more exciting matters at hand," Ginny said, grinning at the couple.
"What?" Harry asked.
"They're getting married!" she gushed. "Have you set a date yet? Looked at dresses? Want me to help plan it?"
Hermione shook her head, laughing. "Ginny, we haven't even really talked about it yet. I haven't even told my parents!"
"Well, get on it girl! I've been looking for something to do."
Hermione blushed. "Sure, Ginny, I'll let you know when we figure it out."
"That's exciting though, congratulations," Harry said, smiling at them. He was pleased for both of them.
Everyone finished up their breakfast, before going their separate way. "So what's the plan for today?" Sirius asked, carrying Eridanus upstairs.
"Well, I need to go to the Ministry and talk to my boss about starting a new project. And then, depending on how that goes, I need to let Minerva know about the job."
He nodded, mentally taking a note of everything. "And tonight?"
"I was going to take Eridanus to see my parents," she said nervously.
"Oh." Sirius flushed. He knew he should probably go with her to meet her parents, but the idea frightened him.
"You don't have to come if you don't want too," she added quickly, reading his thoughts.
"No, I do," he said, although he wasn't really firm in his tone.
"Sirius, it's all right."
"I'm just scared." He blushed. "Well, only a little bit," he amended.
"Why?" she asked, smirking. Seeing a grown man afraid of meeting a witch's parents was highly amusing.
"Because they're your parents! And I'm sure they figured out that I'm way older than you… and that we were together while you were still in school.
Hermione shook her head. "They won't mind, Sirius."
"How can you know though?" he asked worriedly, turning his attention towards Eridanus who had started to fidget in his arms. He sat down on the floor with his son, Accioing some toy blocks over.
"Because my father is fifteen years older than my mother. He was her college professor, so no, they won't mind," Hermione explained.
"Oh," Sirius commented, his nervousness going down slightly. "Well, I'll go with you tonight then to meet them."
"Sirius, that's wonderful! I'll owl my mother to let her know." Hermione beamed at him, leaning down to give him a kiss. She started to pull away but he wrapped his arms around her neck, holding her closer.
"I love you," he whispered, kissing her again.
Hermione smiled. "I love you, too."
"Honest?"
She nodded. Hermione kissed him once more, before exiting the room. "I have to go to work; do you think you can handle him?"
Sirius nodded nervously. "I think so. Can't be too hard, right?"
"Well, Ginny will be home too, and Remus usually stops over with Teddy at some point, so you can ask them for help."
"Okay," Sirius said, smiling. "I'll see you tonight."
"Bye love!" she called, running down the stairs, summoning her briefcase.
"Bye kitten, have a good day!" he called after her. He heard the front door close and turned to Eridanus. "What are we going to do today?"
Eridanus giggled.
