Chapter 10
As Harry read the letter Remus sent over Sirius' shoulder, he passed the mass of catalogs the werewolf had included over to Severus. From what he could see so far, there wasn't anything they need to concern themselves about when it came to those looking for them. Remus was just giving a rundown of what he knew and any news he heard. It was perfect and meant they weren't in any danger so far.
When Sirius finished and passed the letter to Severus, Harry leaned back then started eating again. “So far, so good,” he said between bites. “Nothing I saw we need to worry about yet.”“Nope, nothing,” Sirius agreed, also digging in once more. “He knows to keep himself safe as well, so it's nothing to worry about. If something comes up, he'll let us know, fast.”
Once he finished perusing the letter, Severus nodded then put it beside his plate. “I agree,” he added. “With what's there, I say we do the trip into town tomorrow. Everyone is scrambling enough we can slip in without an issue. We'll just stay on our toes and go about it the Muggle way; driving. It won't look off and no one would look for us in a Muggle automobile.”“Fine,” Sirius nodded. “First thing in the morning, though. It takes time for everyone to get organized then moving when it comes to those in the Ministry. We'll just be quick about it.” Glancing at Severus, he asked, “Any way we can put spells on the car to make sure we're not tracked or noticed?”“It's illegal, of course,” Severus said, but smirking as he did. “However, I ensured they were on it just in case. More protection.”“It isn't like we've not skirted the law in plenty with this bit,” Sirius snorted, grinning. Leave it to Severus to stay one step ahead of them with things. Then he sobered up and added, “We'll make sure to add the charms to our clothes before we go as well. The more protection the better.”“Of course,” Severus agreed. After finishing his brekky and pushing the plate aside, he sipped his tea. It had already been an interesting morning. They had woken in the same parlor they had fallen asleep in, of course, but were stunned to find the changes in it. Eddie had explained it was the house's doing. The way they comprehended what he explained was it, like Hogwarts, was slightly sentient and could help. Most times you didn't see anything as dramatic, but it could happen. While they were stunned by the room and the patio area, something Eddie told them was done as well, they were pleased. The more help they could get, the better. He just wanted to figure out the why behind it, nothing more. After another sip of his earl grey, he put his cup down then said, “Today we'll press on with the downstairs. We still have plenty of rooms to tend to. Let's see how far we can get.”When he heard the normal agreements, he looked at Harry then smirked and added, “This morning, while we start, I want you to look through the rooms down here and pick one to use for a classroom.” When he heard Harry groan, though grinning as he did, he smirked. “We won't be starting right off, but it'll be one we have to add plenty of protection spells on and have to decorate differently. As you're the only 'student', I thought it would be nice for you to pick the one you liked best.”“I'll find something,” Harry told him, already thinking of the one way in the back with a wonderful view of the yard. He just wanted to look it over to make sure it was something he would like.“Make sure to take Eddie with you,” Sirius added, refilling his cup. “We think we have all the pests down here gone, but you never know.”“I will,” Harry said. “When I'm done, I come back and help more.”“Of course you will,” Severus snorted, crossing his legs and looking amused. “There is no chance we're letting you get out of all the work around here.”Harry couldn't help but grin at what was said. “I didn't think you would.”“Look, while I get we have a ton to do here, we need a break as well, Severus,” Sirius told the other man with a shake of his head. “All we're doing is working then we're too tired to do much else. If we don't take a break here and there, we'll all end up at each other's throats from various bits. I say we start taking afternoons off to have some fun. I don't mean leave, of course, but play some games, go outside and muck around, something.”“Very true,” Severus agreed after pondering a moment. “I say we work until tea then take the night off to do whatever. We'll find something.” Then he added, eyebrow going up as he looked between the two, “And nothing deranged from either of you. Normal bits, please! I will not be pulled into a naked wrestling match again!”“That was fun, though,” Harry snickered as he heard Sirius laugh. “The same with some of the other bits we did, like racing with Padfoot.”“We will not do that again, Harry,” Severus intoned, looking at him, trying not to smile just a little. “We'll find something we'll all enjoy, I assure you both.”“Yeah,” Sirius grinned, reaching over to rub the back of Harry's head. “Plenty we can come up with.”Then, changing topics, Sirius asked about the sheep that the elves would be picking up that afternoon. It meant they were going to have to go outside and make sure one of the buildings was ready for them with all the supplies. As badly as the lawn needed done, before pests out there made their way inside, they wanted the sheep on it as fast as they could manage.
Map of the bottom floor out, the one he had on his clipboard, Harry made a red check on the room they had just left. It was the one he thought about over brekky for his 'classroom'. A good look around it and he decided it was perfect. All the way in the back, right on the corner of the house, it had a great view of the outside from two walls. Not only was the view something he liked, it had plenty of room and a big fireplace for when it grew colder. There were just some repairs needed, nothing more. Well, and to set it up how they wanted.
As he navigated to the main hallway that would take him to the front of the house so he could join the other two, he asked Eddie, who was floating along beside him, “The fireplaces—there's no way for anyone outside the house to hook them to the Floo network, is there? I assume not, but want to make sure. If the Ministry and Dumbledore get desperate enough, they might try something like it to look for us, even if they don't know for sure we're somewhere.”“Oh no,” Eddie assured him with a shake of his head. “Because of the protections on the house, the Floo can't be hooked up, even if the three of you try. It can't be done through the warding and other spells on the house. You're safe that way, Harry.”“Good,” Harry nodded. He didn't think anyone could manage, but wanted to make sure so they didn't end up with surprise visitors.“All of you are safe on that front,” Eddie assured him.As they reached the end of the hallway, right by the main staircase, Eddie had Harry stop, smiling as he did. The house, apparently, was moving everything along because one of the secrets was revealed. “I think you have something to add to your list of what needs checked out, Harry,” he said, gesturing to a door that had been hidden since they moved in. It was smaller than the standard doors and built into the side of the staircase.“Where did that come from?” Harry asked, eyes wide, wand out. He wanted to go exploring, of course, but knew it might not be safe.“One of the house's secrets,” Eddie told him, sounding a tad smug.“What's in it? Do you know?” Harry inquired, itching to find out, though he would grab Sirius and Severus first.“I'll let you discover it for yourself,” Eddie told him with a chuckle, seeing the light in Harry's eyes and being able to tell he was ready to find out. He then sobered up and added with a sigh, “However, let’s grab Sirius and Severus. One never knows what pests might be lurking in it.”“Right,” Harry grinned, motioning for Eddie to follow him as he quickly headed towards the room the two were working in. A good mystery was just what they all needed to deal with the drudgery of cleaning and repairing the house.
Wand ready, Severus glanced at the other two to ensure they had theirs poised as well, then he nodded and opened the door that had appeared, wary for whatever might come out. He, too, was curious what was in the room, but knew to stay alert.
Once it was open and nothing jumped out, he cast a strong Lumos in it so they could see. Immediately, the three had to get rid of a few nasty creatures that scuttled away from the light. Serious look on his face, he cast a detection spell for others. When the readings came back showing a few, they eradicated them as well. After ensuring the pests were gone, he then cast a quick cleaning charm and motioned everyone to follow him.As they stepped into the small room, his eyes widened. Mostly there were books crammed into almost every space in the little room, but there were other artifacts as well, items that appeared as though they were treasures from many years past, like pictures, artwork, various knickknacks and the like. All of what he saw appeared as though they were centuries old. While Harry and Sirius looked around, though they weren't touching anything, Severus looked at some of the titles of the books. A few he had heard of, though hadn't read as they were rare, but most he hadn't. Some had to do with genealogy, others spells, yet others history. As he looked them over, he asked Eddie, “Why aren't these in the library, do you know?” He was already itching to read a few of them as they sounded fascinating.“These can't be moved to the library,” Eddie told him with a smile, floating just inside the doorway. “They are special in some way, having an attachment to various owners over the years and are personal. Some it's because of what they contain and the history. Others are so rare and valuable they need protected. It's the same with the other objects in here. The house must have deemed you worthy to see them and trusts you to not do any harm to all that's here.”“We'll make sure they're taken care of,” Sirius assured him, looking over a solid platinum decorative mask of some sort. “Some of these pieces are wonderful, though, and would make good decorations.”“I believe the house would allow you to use them for that,” Eddie smiled, floating over closer to them as they looked at some of the ancient swords there. “They are wonderful pieces which would make a great addition to what you're doing.” Then he added, “The history of each piece in here is contained in books, also in this room. Quite fascinating to read.”“We'll do so as well,” Severus assured him, coming over to gaze at what the other two were looking over. Oh yes, he wanted some of what was here as decorations. In fact, he wanted some of the swords and the mask for their room.Being cautious, Harry picked up a wand that was in a box with two more and looked it over. He wasn't sure what kind of wood it was, only that it appeared as though it was a mix between gold and silver. As he held it, he felt his hair blow about and the wand seem to come alive in his hand. With a grin, he gave it a wave and watched sparks fly from the end. It felt as good in his hand as his own wand did. “This is brilliant! It responds to me just like mine does.” He told everyone. “What kind of wood is it, do you know, Eddie?”“That I don't,” Eddie told him, floating closer and Sirius and Severus looked over the wand. “All I know is the triplets, as they were called, were left by the second people to reside in this house after it was built. They were brothers, triplets, who passed away while living here. The house deemed the wands should be put in this room for protection.” Looking at the other two men, he encouraged, “Pick up the others. Mayhaps they'll have the same reaction to you. It was three men who had them, after all.”Though trepidatious, Severus picked up one wand while Sirius did the other. Immediately, the wand seemed to claim him like his own had done all those years ago, reacting to his magic and seeming to come alive in his hand. With a nod, he smirked then told everyone, “It is the same for me.”“And me,” Sirius added, grinning at the intricately carved wand. “This is pretty awesome, honestly. It feels 'right' in my hand, like my other one does.”“I believe the three have claimed you, haven't they?” Eddie said, floating closer to look them over. “There should be a book in here about them, though I don't know which one. If there isn't a bad reaction, they should be safe to use, I would think.”“True,” Severus nodded, clutching his 'new' wand after slipping his other up his sleeve. Then he scanned around the titles on the books he saw before shaking his head. He didn't see anything on wands, so it was probably in another. With a snort and smirk, he said, “We'll have fun exploring this room, and all that is contained in it. Maybe the Librarian can take a look over what's here. She may know some of what the books are about, aside from the obvious ones. What do you think, Eddie?”“Oh yes, she may,” Eddie agreed with a nod, sure she would adore helping.“The room won't close back up, will it?” Harry asked after looking over the wand that had claimed him.“No,” Eddie assured him with a smile. “Once it's opened, it stays that way.” Then, with a chuckle, he added, floating over to the one wall which didn't have much on it. “This is a secret passage, though. Push the small off colored piece of wood here,” he explained, gesturing to a lighter colored piece of square wood by the one corner.Oh, Harry couldn't resist and did so, but stepped back when the wall slid open, revealing a dark staircase. He wanted to explore where it went, but didn't as it could be dangerous in several ways.“Where does it lead to?” Sirius asked, peering in after casting a lighting charm and checking for pests. This was rather interesting and fun!“Your bedroom,” Eddie chuckled, smiling as he did. “It comes out right by your closet, behind the tapestry there. Perfectly safe, I assure you. As you can see, the stairs are safe because it wasn't exposed to so much the way the rest of the house was.”“Excellent,” Harry grinned. “Our own secret passage!”“We'll make sure it's cleaned out and safe before we use it, Harry,” Severus smirked, pleased with this odd bit. It certainly made the house more interesting.“Any more hidden rooms and passages like this?” Sirius asked, after looking up the stairs. They were going to make sure they were cleaned and safe now as he liked this.“Several,” Eddie told him with another chuckle. “The house will reveal them in the fullness of time. As I told you the first day we met, Sanctuary Manor has many secrets you'll enjoy discovering.”“If they are like this one, we will,” Harry laughed, following Severus into the hidden passageway, looking around.“Yeah, we'll have fun,” Sirius grinned, ruffling Harry's hair.Smiling as their boys enjoyed the hidden passage, Eddie nodded. Yes, the house also had a good feeling about their boys if it was starting to reveal its secrets this early on.
After tea, the three had retired to the patio area to relax for the night. Though they accomplished quite a lot with the cleaning, after exploring the new room and passage, there was still plenty to do. Tired, they decided it was time to implement Sirius' suggestion and just relax until bedtime.
As they were seated on the ornate bench that could easy hold the three of them, Harry was turned sideways, leaning back against Sirius with his feet propped up on Severus' thigh. The two were going through some of the catalogs Remus had sent, trying to decide on things like carpeting, wallpaper and such. He had looked through one, but just wanted to relax like this for a while since it felt good. While he relaxed as the two talked about what to buy, he looked off over the yard. Of course, his eyes lit on the statues and he smiled. The three of them had spent quite a while looking them over after coming out, fascinated with how they moved and talked, listening to some of what they had to say. He thought it was rather brilliant they had statues and so much else he had always associated with the bits posh Muggles had for their homes. And he adored the place as it had so much he loved. Most of all, though, because it was theirs. All theirs they could make into what they wanted and was comfortable for them. After shutting his eyes, he smiled as he listened to the two discuss carpeting for the house. It sounded like they wanted to get it ordered but couldn't decide on just what they wanted for the bedroom and areas they had cleaned. When they finally asked him, he said, smiling though not opening his eyes, “I don't care, really. At least not about the color or whatever. All I want is something nice thick and soft. I like doing the barefoot bit in the bedroom.”Arm slipping around Harry, Sirius chuckled then nodded, “I can go with that as well. It'll be nice just to slop around without anything on your feet.”“We'll go in that direction,” Severus agreed with a smirk. The color was actually easy. He was going with something darker to match their bedroom and the furnishings. Picking out the one he thought was best, he showed it to the two. When he saw nods, he checked it off. If they could hash some of this out, they could get it ordered tonight then work on getting it in place tomorrow when they returned from shopping. When he finished, he set the catalogs aside and just leaned back, putting a hand on Harry's ankle and giving it a squeeze. “This is rather comfortable, isn't it?” He said to no one in particular.“It's great,” Sirius said, relishing the breeze that ruffled his hair and stirred the grass around the patio. Buckbeak was lounging close by, seeming to snooze on the grass. Hedwig wasn't around, so he assumed she was off hunting. He could even see the half a dozen sheep they received earlier grazing close by.For him, this was wonderful. He wasn't cooped up in that awful house and could be out in the fresh air without fear of being caught. It did more for him than almost anything else when it came to feeling good. Even better was he was with the two people he loved most in the world. It felt like his life was complete and better than it had ever been before.Harry watched the fire in the pit dance, a small smile on his face. He loved the way this felt. It was wonderful, something he had longed for. Looking up, he watched the stars start to twinkle as dusk fell and gave a contented sigh. Then he asked, “Do we have any marshmallows, either of you know?”“I'm not sure, why?” Severus asked, curious as that was a fairly off the wall question.“I thought, if we did, we could sit around the fire and toast them. Maybe have some hot chocolate with them. Would make it nice, you know, like a bonfire or something.” Harry explained with a smile.“Hey, that sound great,” Sirius grinned, seeing Severus nod as well. After summoning an elf, he sent the creature off to look, hoping they did since Harry mentioned it. “I know we have hot chocolate, as that's mandatory.”“Perhaps we can make it fairly traditional and sit close to the fire and tell spooky stories,” Severus added, smirking slightly, though adoring this idea.“I haven't done that since we were in school, Severus,” Sirius grinned. “And it's a great idea. I'm sure we all know some good ones.”“Brilliant idea!” Harry agreed grinning as well. After sitting up with a groan, he was happy when the elf popped back out with a bag of marshmallows and the traditional sticks to roast them on. Then a large ceramic pot of hot chocolate appeared by the fire for them. After moving the bench closer to the fire, the three settled in, skewering the marshmallows then starting to roast them. Harry watched his closely as he didn't like it too dark, then nudged Severus and said, “You start with the stories since it was your idea.”After taking a mug of the delicious smelling hot chocolate from Sirius and putting his marshmallow in the fire, Severus leaned back then smirked. After quickly sorting through the stories he knew of the spooky sort, he started out, “It was a late winter night, the kind when the moon was dark, the wind cold and snow blanketing the moors.” This was an old standard he had heard as a kid, but still loved. Yes, they would have a wonderful time until they went to bed.As he pressed on with the story of a haunting no one could banish because the restless spirit had something to still impart, he felt Harry lean against him. Slipping his arm around the youngest of them, he then felt Sirius put his arm around the two of them. As they sat there, pressed together, he spun the old tale, adoring the closeness. This—yes, they would be doing it more. Maybe reading a bit each night as he was sure they could find wonderfully spooky tales in the library that would add to the ambiance outside. Either way, he adored this. While he had been leery of getting out, what with all the problems which could come of it, he was now glad he had let the two talk him into it. There were problems, big ones, still to come that didn't involve the house, but they would handle them as they presented themselves. Just so they were together. Them together was all that mattered, to all of them.
