Chapter 10
Special AN!
I am changing one bit when it comes to canon here; when Fred and George nicked the map. In the books, it was the first year they were at school. As I need it for something, I'm changing it. So, no howling at me!

At breakfast the following morning, Harry was excited. Classes were going to start and he couldn't wait. Seated next to Fred, with George on the other side of him, and Seamus with Dean across from them, they were talking about what was coming. Fred and George were giving them some tips on what to avoid and to stay wary of, like Peeves. They also gave a basic rundown of what was where and how to prepare. Then they told them about the teachers, at least a little. Harry couldn't wait. While Neville and Ron were listening in, the two were more interested in talking to each other, though they chimed in here and there.
While he was going to town on his breakfast, he looked up and grinned as the owls all soared in to deliver the mail. As they landed in front of various people, delivering whatever, he gave an internal sigh when he saw Barnabas land in front of his plate. After taking the medium sized package from the owl, he gave Barnabas some bacon and watched the owl take a drink from his cup then wing off again. He would send Hedwig back with a reply that night so his aunt didn't get strange. Though wary, he opened the package and was pleased to see it wasn't too overly extravagant, just some sweets and cakes plus a couple of books. A quick read through the letter had him thankful it wasn't much. She was just congratulating him on getting into the house his parents had been in and talking about Molly Weasley. It seemed the two hit it off and were going to start corresponding. He was hopeful it would keep his aunt distracted a little so she didn't focus too much on him. While he wasn't counting on it, he could hope!Once he finished his breakfast, he sipped his juice. Sirius, who was staying close, told him Professor McGonagall would pass out schedules when the meal was done then they could go back to the dorm to get what he needed before heading to the first class. Good, because he was excited by the thought of starting. As he waited, he asked Fred and George a few questions about some bits since they had been around and knew if there were changes Sirius didn't. They were more than happy to help all they could, thankfully. After what seemed like forever, the professor finally passed out the schedules. Harry looked it over quickly then stood to head to the dorm so he could gather his books and bag. As he was headed out of the hall, Seamus and Dean joined him, planning for all of them to go to classes together. Since Sirius was going to help him find where he needed to go, this was fine with him. At least he would have someone along and they weren't likely to get lost or into trouble before their first class.
Sirius trailed along behind the trio as they headed to the dorms, talking, and smiled. While he wasn't sure Harry would end up with anyone really close, he liked the idea he was talking to some. Ron and Neville quickly joined them and they talked, but Harry seemed to like the other two better. The same with Fred and George. From what he was seeing, Ron and Neville looked like they were destined to end up close, which was probably good for them. The two obviously needed someone for various reasons. He hoped Harry would attach slightly to Dean and Seamus. At least for classes and in the dorm at night. Fred and George—he liked the two and hoped Harry would attach more to them. Though they were older, they seemed as though they had taken a shine to him. He hoped. With as little as Harry let anyone close, anything was good, honestly.
As he trailed along first to the dorms then down to the greenhouses, Sirius took the time to examine the spells and all the other bits he needed to know about to keep himself safe. From what he saw so far, it hadn't changed over the years, something perfect for him as he knew how they reacted. As the day wore on, he would do some more with plenty and scope out whatever. Sir Nicolas hadn't seemed to notice him the night before when he popped around the table after the sorting, but he wanted to make sure. If the ghost hadn't seen him, he was good on that front then only needed to worry about Peeves, though he didn't think he could either. He just wanted to make sure. In a couple days he would know where he stood with so much and be able to roam when he wasn't with Harry to suss out what was going on. Once he knew, he would be in a better place to determine plenty. It needed to come and he planned to ensure he did all he could to keep Harry safe.
After retiring to the dorms for the night, Harry had mixed feelings about the day. While he loved being here and learning, he didn't like History so far, understanding what Sirius meant by it being boring. It meant he had to study mostly on his own for that as the class was enough to put you to sleep, honestly. DADA was fascinating, though he wasn't sure about Professor Quirrell. There was something off about the man which made him uncomfortable, though he didn't know what it was. He was just so—odd and there was something about him Harry didn't like. However, he liked Professor Sprout, a lot, and thought she was a great teacher. While the class wasn't easy, he found it was fascinating.
One of the other bits he didn't like was Hermione. She was a first class swot that he thought was doing what she did, such as trying to answer all the questions and making a show of her intelligence, as a cry for attention of some kind. And she was already on his nerves. Even if Sirius hadn't issued the challenge he did, he would do what he could to give her a run for her money in so much. From mutterings he heard, plenty of the others in the house didn't like her either. While he hoped she'd knock some of it off, he didn't think she would.Draco Malfoy was going to end up a pest as well. It seemed the prat didn't take him rejecting the attempt at friendship well at all. They had met in the halls a couple times that day and each time there was some kind of off remark over something. Like he did with so many in the past, he ignored it and didn't respond in any way. Instead, he pretended not to hear the git and kept right on going. While Seamus and Dean, two who he had stuck with most of the day, paid attention to what was said and relayed it to him, they didn't engage either. He figured it'd go about like it did in Little Whinging; if he didn't rise to the occasion, the idiot would find someone else to focus on. It usually worked there and he figured it would with Malfoy as well. For the most part, he really enjoyed his first day. He enjoyed it even more when he finished tea and realized he didn't have to deal with Aunt Petunia! Being away from her was motivation enough to help him put up with almost anything. His plan for tonight wasn't much. As History was so bad and boring, he was going to reread the chapter they covered. Then he was going to write his aunt so she didn't get strange on him. While he didn't want to stay in contact, he knew if he didn't she'd flip. Writing a letter a night was a small price to pay for being away from her. After he was finished, he would look through the text he would need for the following day. Dean and Seamus said something about wanting to sit in the common room, so he'd do that as well. Might as well get used to those in his house as they'd be together so much. He just planned to avoid Hermione if he could at all help it.Shedding his robes, something he wasn't used to yet, he grabbed what he needed then headed down to the common room. As expected, it was plenty noisy with almost everyone in it. Percy Weasley, who was a Prefect, was trying to run herd on everyone and get them quieted down, though it wasn't working. Harry just chuckled and shook his head then took a seat by the twins, Seamus and Dean. Seamus and Dean looked like they were going to play chess while the twins were talking over plans with Lee Jordan. Harry found his seat, after saying hi to everyone when they greeted him then spread out, planning to get to work. He was just opening his History book when Ron and Neville joined them.“Mate,” Ron chuckled, holding a letter from his parents, “Dad wants to know a bit about that phone of yours.”“Why?” Harry asked, looking up, confused.“Dad has a thing for Muggle devices,” Fred snorted, grinning.“Yeah, he gets all excited about them,” George added, grinning himself.“He knows what a telephone is, of course, but hasn't ever heard of a mobile before,” Ron explained, grinning a tad himself.“Not much to know,” Harry told him with a chuckle then explained the concept of the phone to them. Shrugging, he added, “They're a big thing now, I guess. My aunt has one as well.”“And expensive,” Hermione said softly from where she was sitting not far away. After a glance at Harry, looking him up and down, she added, “Like your shoes and those clothes.”Ignoring the girl as he didn't like her much, Ron asked, glancing at what Harry was wearing, “Really?”“Yeah, they are. They're a new thing now and just coming out.” Harry shrugged. “She gave the stuff to me as a gift.”“They are expensive,” Dean nodded, glancing at what Harry was wearing. “The trainers are really pricey. I've only looked at them in shops.”Not liking this topic, Harry sighed then explained, “Aunt Petunia has—well, since my cousin and uncle died, she's gone a bit overboard with some bits. The clothes and phone are part of it.”“Sorry,” Dean said, looking a tad stricken, hoping he hadn’t touched on something painful. He knew Harry's parents were gone, as Seamus explained that bit to him, he just didn't know about the other two or the circumstances.“It was a couple years ago,” Harry told them. “Nothing to worry about.”“How old was your cousin?” Seamus asked, not trying to be nosy like some, just wanting the information to get to know Harry better. He seemed like a good bloke and nice. While he wasn't sure what to think when he found out he was the Harry Potter, he liked him as he was down to earth and just the regular kind.“A little over a month older than me,” Harry told them with a sigh. “He was hit by a car,” he then added softly. “Dudley was my aunt's only child.” His hope was the questioning would stop there as he didn't want to get into the whole mess.“Wow,” Dean said, shaking his head. “Sorry, mate.”“Thanks,” Harry told him with a smile.Deciding not to even mention the topic again, as none of them knew how Harry would react, George changed it a bit, “The woman with you at Kings Cross was your aunt then?”“We assumed, of course,” Fred added, settling back and paying attention. The two of them already liked Harry and wanted to get to know him.“That's Aunt Petunia,” Harry nodded. “She was mum's sister.”With a chuckle, George observed, “She looked like she was clinging a bit.”“Mum's the kind, because there are so many of us, that it's a bit of a relief to get us all out of the house,” Fred told him with a winning grin.Harry laughed at what Fred said and nodded, “Understandable there. Yeah, she's been like that since Dudley died. It'll be the first time she's been alone since she married Uncle Vernon.”Not wanting to go into the topic, Harry then pulled out his letter and asked, dancing away from the questions, “Speaking of her—do you lot know how to get a hold of a Honeydukes catalog? She's asking about it and I'm not sure. From what she says, she remembers it from when mum was in school.”“Percy would know,” George told him. “We haven't been to Hogsmeade yet.”“Let me go grab him,” Fred said, standing to fetch his brother.“Maybe we can get one too,” Seamus grinned, nudging Harry. “That way we can order plenty!”“I plan on it,” Harry laughed, pleased to be off the topic of his aunt as he didn't want to think about her as much as he could manage.“She sent you a ton of sweets today,” Ron observed, remember the box Harry received in the mail. “She do that a lot?” He wanted to know as Harry was the kind to share, like on the train.“I assume she will,” Harry told him with a shrug. “It goes back to other bits. She does quite a bit of it at home.” Then he added, grinning, “And I plan to share with you lot. There's no chance I can eat all of what she sends me.”“We'll be more than happy to help get rid of them, Harry,” Dean laughed clapping him on the back.“Oh yeah,” Ron agreed with a nod, hearing Neville do the same.“Good,” Harry chuckled, leaning back. Oh, he would study as he planned and write the letter, but he liked this as well. It wasn't often he let himself be drawn into conversations with others, especially personal ones, but it was fun and he liked getting to know the ones here. When a smug and important looking Percy came over with Fred, Harry explained his aunt's request then was pleased Percy knew how to go about getting the catalogs. He would send her off the information, but planned to order one himself to see what was there. If anything in it tasted as good as what he had on the train, he'd order some for himself as well.
For the first time since becoming Harry's shadow, Sirius stayed a bit further away and didn't interject himself. Instead, he was by the wall close to him, just watching the interaction with a smile on his face. Really, for the first time since he came into Harry's life, his godson was opening up to others. Though it was the first day, Harry was talking to the small group more than he had any of the kids in either school. While he could tell Harry didn't want to get into some areas, like his aunt, he was allowing himself to be included and actively taking part in the conversation. It was great and Sirius loved it. How close Harry would allow them to get he didn't know, but a friendship of any kind was good. And he planned to encourage it all he could.
As the lot of them settled down, he moved a bit closer then told Harry that he was going to roam. When his godson told him it was fine, Sirius slipped out of the common room then began to roam the halls. He had plenty to test when it came to some bits, something to look for, then a general nosy around to see what information he could find. Quirrell came to mind there as, like Harry, he sensed something off. While he wasn't sure what it was, he wanted to find out. All he knew was it was probably a damned good idea to keep Harry away from him. At some point he also wanted to chance dancing close to Albus to see if the old goat could sense him. He didn't think so, but would stay cautious as one could never be too vigilant with all Albus knew.As he stuck to the shadows and made his way down the halls, his mind was on plenty but he was staying alert. This was a big chance to take so early on, so he wanted to stay safe. While navigating the familiar halls and hearing Peeves up to something and headed that way to see if there was an issue, he honed the list of bits he wanted to tend to and prioritized. For a time, he would do this each night to make sure he stayed on top of everything. After a time he could settle down.
After retiring to the dorm for the night earlier than most, as the noise was bothering him, Harry was in bed with Sirius. Since it was quiet, he had been reading through the texts he would use the following day, looking forward to Charms and Transfiguration for the first time. While he had read through the books at home, he was refreshing his memory for what was there. As he did, Sirius was holding him like normal, something that made him feel good.
As he turned the pages, he asked, “Did you find anything I need to know about while you were out?” He knew Sirius was scoping out what was going on to keep an eye out for the both of them.“Not too much, though I did learn the ghosts and Peeves can't see me. That's good. I think some of the cats can as Filch's beast sensed something though she moved on quickly. It's something I'll just have to stay wary of.” Sirius explained, watching what Harry was doing.“Not seeing or sensing you is good,” Harry chuckled, looking over his shoulder at him. “You don't want to get caught, after all.”“Nope!” Sirius laughed, giving him a squeeze. “Right, there is something I need you to do tomorrow at some point. It's right on the way to the Great Hall, so it won't be out of your way. There was something we made back in school that Filch took from us. I found it in his office tonight and hid it. I could have managed to get it back here, but it would have looked odd, so I didn't want to try. You can just grab it then I'll show you what it is and how to make it work.”“I can do that easily,” Harry nodded. “Well, provided it's nothing big that is.”“It's not,” Sirius assured him with a shake of his head. “It'll look just like a sheet of parchment and you can carry it around. It's a map we made and it'll help you a ton with plenty. Besides, I want to make damned sure I don't show up on it. We just don't want anyone seeing it if you can at all help it. While we can come up with a story if someone does, I don't want to chance it if I can at all help it.”Now intrigued, Harry nodded, “I'll grab it, no problem. And keep it with me.”“You'll love what it does,” Sirius grinned, giving him a squeeze.“While you're busy at nights, like tonight, and overnight, I'm going to do some roaming. Overnight I'll wait until you're sound asleep and won't be gone long, I promise. This is the best way I have to keep on top of whatever and find out what's going on. It can only help us.” Sirius then told him. He wanted to make sure Harry knew so if he wasn't back and Harry woke for some reason, he wouldn't get upset.“I understand,” Harry nodded, smiling a tad. “Just—please don't be gone too long. I don't sleep well without you around, you know.”“I won't,” Sirius promised him, giving him a kiss on the shoulder. “Only an hour or so, depending on what's going on. There are a couple bits I'm trying to figure out to help you stay safe, so it'll take some time. And I sure as hell don't want to chance it during the day.”“Don't blame you,” Harry grinned, shutting his Charms book and pushing it aside.“Give it a few days and we'll have a schedule down for this,” Sirius assured him. “It'll just take time to find a routine we both like, nothing more.”Harry nodded but listened as everyone came into the dorm. Since he had his curtains shut, everyone would just assume he was asleep, thankfully. With the silencing charm up, they couldn't hear either, even better. As the noise picked up while everyone readied themselves for bed, he asked, “Do you know what you're going to do about the rat yet?”“No,” Sirius admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “Give me time and I'll come up with something. While I might have a basic plan, it'll take time to work on it and iron out the kinks,” he told him, giving Harry a squeeze, slipping one hand under the front of his pajamas to rub his stomach. “Going for doing something by Halloween as poetic justice.”“If you need my help with whatever, let me know,” Harry told him, smiling at the touch. While Sirius still didn't feel like a regular person when he touched him, it always felt great and he liked it. Especially when it was on his bare skin.“I will, though I want you to stay out of it as much as you can so nothing looks off,” Sirius mumbled, resting his chin on Harry's shoulder and smiling himself. As Harry relished in the sensations, smiling, he heard everyone in the dorm start to say good night then said, “I need to lay down to make sure I get up on time.”“You do,” Sirius told him, pulling away so he could. “While you do, I'll walk you through what to expect of the new classes tomorrow. You'll be prepared this way.”Harry flopped down on his side and curled up like normal then gave a contented sigh when Sirius spooned up against him. This was something he always adored and made him feel good.As he slipped an arm around Harry and pulled him close, Sirius walked him through what he remembered of his first classes and the teachers. Feeling Harry's energy start to flow into him as normal, he was pleased. So far, so good. While it was the first full day, there hadn't been a disaster and he was sure he could get away with staying undetected. Though he knew something was up, as he had seen that massive three headed dog guarding something, Harry was safe. And he damned well planned to ensure it stayed that way without Harry being pulled into the middle of it. He didn't care what he had to do, Harry wouldn't get involved. When Harry began to doze off, Sirius shut his eyes and began to plot. Peter needed handled, he had to figure out just what was going on and so much else. While it didn't need tended to right off, it was coming and would take some planning, so he had to start fast and get it in place. So, it was best to jump off now and begin.
