Day 5 -Friday, June 15, 2002
I woke up rested and giddy. I knew in my gut that I was making a mistake, getting involved with someone that there was no future with. If it had been just physical, I may have been able to go with it, but there was going to be heart ache. I just had to hope that it could be the way Charlie had said it would. Either way, at this moment I couldn’t wait to see him again.
I jumped out of bed, 8:30am, plenty of time to take a shower and get ready. I take my time in the shower; rather, rinse, repeat, condition, shave, scrub. At the sink there was some plucking, flossing, teeth brushing, and hair doing.
Back in my room I looked at my clothes. I brought nothing to wear to meet the family of the guy I just met. I guess while I’m out wandering I’ll buy another outfit. I could wear the sundress again but I’d need to get it washed. Problems I didn’t expect to have here. I look at the clock, 9:45. I let out a ridiculous giggle and head out. I bounce down the stairs in an incredibly undignified way, smiling at everyone I see.
I make it to the lobby and he’s already there. Standing at the window looking out, just like the other night. He turns as I reach the floor like he can sense that I’m there, just like the other night. He’s standing in a stream of bright sunlight that causes his red hair to glint in the sun. He really is absolutely beautiful.
He smiles his amazing smile, at me, for me. Yes, this is going to end in heart ache. But for now I’m going to enjoy every moment I have with him.
I cross the lobby to him and I’m pretty sure that I kind of bounced. I’m acting like a teenager!
“Hi.” I say, grinning up at him.
“Hi.” he says back “Where are we going?” he asks as he takes my hand. It seems so natural now.
“Well, I think I need to go shopping.”
“Oh, shopping. Well, that sounds…” I can tell he’s not amused by the day’s plans.
I laugh, “No, I think I need to buy something fit to meet the family of this guy I’m seeing. I didn’t pack anything nice.”
“Really?! You’ll come tonight?” He looks so happy and then suddenly his entire face changes and he looks unsure.
“What? What’s wrong?”
He’s looking over my head as he talks, thinking. “I just realized I don’t know how to get you to Mum and Dad’s. I apparate or use the floo network. “He looks at me “What is your opinion on fireplaces?”
“They are a great form of heat and for Santa to enter to leave me goodies. Why?”
He tugs me out the door and we start walking. “I think the best way to get you there would be through the floo network, but we would have to find a fireplace that we can use without notice. I wonder if Tom at the Leaky Cauldron would be willing to let us use his. Do you mind if we go ask?”
“Ah, no. That’s fine.”
He starts to walk faster and he’s excited as he talks through what needs to be done. “I need to send an owl to mum and let her know that you will be coming and that you’ll be coming by floo. I may need to get in touch with Draco too, make sure he has a potion that you could take if you were to get sick.”
“Potion? Sick? What are you talking about? Charlie?” He keeps talking and walking so I stop and jerk him to a stop.
“Slow down! I’m not taking a potion. Why would I get sick?”
“I’m sorry, I just… I’m excited. I’ll explain everything at the Leaky Cauldron.”
We walk to the pub and go in. I find a seat as Charlie heads over to Tom. I watch as they talk and suddenly Charlie is shaking his hand vigorously with a huge smile on his face.
He comes to the table with two mugs of tea and a huge smile. “It’s all set, Tom said we can use his fireplace.” He sets the tea down and takes his seat. “Ok. So Floo travel. We use Floo Powder and throw it into the fireplace, it creates green flames that won’t hurt you. You step in and say where you want to go. We’ll say “The Burrow”, it’s what we call home. Now the part that can be tough is that you will spin, really fast, a lot. When you get to the Burrow you’ll be dizzy and possibly fall out of the fireplace.”
“Well what a dignified way to meet your family. Why do you want me to take a potion?”
“Well in case you get sick.”
“I think I’ll take my chances without thank you.”
“My only other problem is I would want to be there when you get there, but I also want to get you into the fireplace. I can’t be in two places at one time.”
“What about George or Draco or Harry? Couldn’t one of them be there when I get there, or here when I leave?”
“That’s brilliant. I’ll ask George. Do you mind if we go to his shop before we do your wandering?”
“No, that’s fine.”
We finish our tea and I ask some more questions about his family. I’m getting really nervous about it.
“If I’m traveling through a fireplace, am I going to get dirty? I was hoping to look presentable when I met your parents.”
“You’ll get some soot on you, but whoever is at the Burrow waiting for you, I can have the clean you up and you’ll be perfect.”
“Perfect is not a word used to describe me. It’s too much to live up to.”
“Well, I see you differently.” He reaches over and takes my hand. He looks at our hands for a moment and then back up at me. “I can’t believe it was just yesterday that I was jealous because you were touching Draco’s arm.”
“A lot happened yesterday.” I blushed when I said it and bit my bottom lip to keep from grinning at the memory of him under me.
He matches my look and says “A lot.”
We finish our tea and head to George’s shop. Like yesterday it is packed full of people of all ages looking at the different products. It takes a while to find George towards the back. I get to him first and he gives me a surprised look.
“So, you got tired of the tosser already. Knew you’d come around.” He gave me a hug and then gave an exaggerated sigh as he saw Charlie behind me. “Too good to be true, you haven’t come to your sense yet.”
“George, I need your help.” Charlie said by way of greeting.
“How can I be of service?” he asked with a deep bow.
“Stop. Are you going to Mum’s tonight?”
“Yes, because of you, you git.”
“I’ll be there, Gina is coming with me. “ George looks at me with a raise eyebrow. I give him a ‘what are you going to do’ shrug and he looks back to Charlie.
“We are taking the floo from the Leaky Cauldron but I want someone at home to help her out of the fireplace and get her cleaned off, her concern, that. But I also want someone to be at the Leaky Cauldron to get her in. Would you be willing to help with that?”
George looks at the two of us and a slow grin spreads across his face. “You’re coming to the Burrow. Dad will go mad. An American muggle at his house. You’ll be lucky to get her back out. Of course I’ll help, I think you should probably be at the Burrow first. “
“Great, thanks mate.” Charlie clapped a hand on George’s shoulder. “Meet at the Leaky Cauldron at 4:30?”
“I’ll be there. Now if you excuse me I need to get back to work. George gave me a peck on the cheek and walked over to a group of teenagers looking at something that was letting off smoke.
“That’s done then. Oh I need to send mum and owl. Sorry, one quick stop and then we’re off.”
He leads me to another shop with owls, it’s the wizard post office from what I can gather. Charlie writes a quick letter to his mom and picks an owl, attaches the letter and sends it out. He pays the man working the desk and then we leave. I think I’d go to the post office a lot more if it was like this.
We work our way back out of Diagon Alley and start walking.
“Where are we going?” Charlie asks.
“I don’t know, to see what we can see.”
“Is this how you got lost that day? You just headed out with no idea where you going?”
“Are you complaining?” I ask as I look at him with a grin.
“No, not complaining. But I really don’t want you doing it anymore.”
“Afraid of a little adventure?”
He scoffs, “I work with dragons and I’ve fought in a war. I don’t need any more adventure.”
“Show off.” I say as I hit him with my hip.
He puts an arm around my waist and I do the same and we walk down the street, looking at things and talking. We came to a small shop that sold clothes. I went in and found an outfit that was nice but didn’t look like I was trying too hard. At least I hoped it didn’t.
We had lunch at a café and continued to talk. About our child hoods, the wizard war that his family was a part of, what it’s like to work with dragons. We ended up sitting there for 3 hours. I looked at my watch and started.
“It’s 3:30! I need to get back to my room and clean up a little before we go.”
We head back to my hotel and get there at 3:45. I have enough time for another shower. My nerves kicked in on the way back and I started sweating. Charlie hung out in my room while I went to the bathroom to shower and brush my teeth again. I got dressed and went back to my room to do my hair and make-up. I stood at the mirror messing with my hair. Up or down? Why is this so hard? What the hell am I doing?
“Down.”
I turn to Charlie. “What?”
“Leave it down. You always have it up. I think you should leave it down.”
“Hm. Ok.” I brush my hair out again and pull one of the sides back in a barrette. I then put my make-up on while Charlie sat on the bed and watched me. I put in a pair of earrings and check my watch. 4:20, just enough time to walk to the Leaky Cauldron.
“Ok, I’m ready. Should I take something? Wine or I don’t know… something?”
“Stop worrying. It will be fine. “ He comes over and kisses my forehead. “Let’s go.”
I can’t talk on the way there. I keep thinking about magical transportation and meeting his family. I’m working myself up to a panic attack. Charlie keeps looking over at me but seems to understand that a conversation is probably not going to happen. We make it to the Leaky Cauldron and George is at the bar talking to Tom.
“Ah, here we go. Tom, have a good night.” George walks over. “Are we ready?”
“No.” I say in a small voice.
“It will be fine.” Charlie says “Or are you having second thoughts?”
“No, I’ll go. I’m just not ready. I may never be ready so I guess it’s best if we do this quickly so I stop thinking about it.”
“I’m going to go first. Watch and listen to what I do. I’ll be there when you get there. George will help you and then he’ll follow.”
I’m staring at the fireplace and I nod absently. Charlie stands in front of me with his hands on my shoulders.
“I’ll see you in a bit, ok?” he kisses my forehead and steps to the fireplace. He grabs a handful of something that looks like dirt or ash and throws it into the fireplace. A green fire roars and Charlie stepped into it. I suck in a breath, this is so not natural. He looks straight at me and says “The Burrow” loudly, and again he disappeared. Would I ever get used to that?
“Ok. You’re up.” George places his hand on the small of my back and gave me an encouraging push toward the fireplace.”
“George, I’m scared.”
“Neither one of us would put you in a dangerous situation.”
“Is this safe for muggles?” I whisper.
“Of course it is. Come one. Charlie is going to wonder where you went. Grab a handful of Floo Powder, toss it in, step into the green fire and say, clearly, ‘The Burrow’. You will start to spin. Keep your arms close and try not to breath in too much. You should come out and see Charlie.”
I grabbed the Floo Powder and tossed it in. I could feel the heat from the green fire. I hesitated and then stepped in with my eyes squeezed shut. It was warm but not hot, I started to relax a little. I turned to look at George.
“Clearly.” he reminds me.
“The Burrow!” I speak as clearly as possible.
I start to spin and I could have sworn I heard George say “I guess we should have checked to make sure this was safe for muggle transportation.” as I spin out of the fireplace at the Leaky Cauldron.
