Hermione came down from her childhood bedroom at five in the morning and sat down with her tea at the table. As usual her mother was already down there with her own cup, she had inherited her mothers love of the early morning light. Her father, if given the chance, would sleep until early noon instead of waking up. Jane looked at her little girl and leaned back with a smile, Hermione had grown up and soon she would be someone’s wife. Then someone’s mother. Tears filled the older woman’s eyes and she looked down quickly hoping her daughter hadn’t seen them.
“What is it?” Hermione asked, sitting down across from her mother watching her try to calm her breathing.
“I only just realized how grown up you are” Jane answered.
“Are you kidding?” Hermione said “I just left my fiancée at the castle because I am an immature moron”
“You’re not a moron” Jane said “Honey, marriage is a terrifying thing. You are giving yourself to him completely, heart, mind, soul…and body and the thought that you will have to share everything with him is…terrifying”
“Thanks” Hermione said taking a sip of her tea and burning her tongue “I wasn’t nervous enough, but now I am…good job”
“You will share everything” Jane said soothingly “Happy memories, happy new experiences, past experiences and the bad things too. Your grandmother died about two years after I married your father and I have to say that I don’t think I could have made it through that time in my life without him”
“Are you telling me something?” Hermione looked worried “Are you sick…is daddy?”
“No” She said quickly “Well…no, we’re healthy”
“Well?” Hermione said “What’s well mean?”
“Well…” Jane grinned “I’m pretty sure your father may be insane” Hermione rolled her eyes and hit her mothers arm with a laugh.
“We’ve always known that” Hermione told her then sobered “Mum…I wanted a romance, dancing in the moonlight, stolen kisses, whispered promises and when the time was right the perfect engagement”
“You want to type of romance one reads in a book with the type of man that every avid reader would practically kill themselves to get” Jane surmised “But it doesn’t exist”
“I know that” Hermione snapped and put her head on her arms “I know that, but is it so much to ask for my own Romeo?”
“Romeo?” Jane chuckled “He was a horny teenager who got sick of one girl after they had sex and then married his enemies daughter so he could bed her” Hermione lifted her head and shot her mother a look of absolute horror.
“Oh come on, Hermione” Jane exclaimed “In this day and age Romeo would have slept with Juliet and left her and if by some miracle they did get married it would never have lasted”
“Fine” Hermione snapped “My own…George Knightly or Heathcliffe, Mr. Darcy…bloody hell I’d take Jacob Black or Edward Cullen!” She dropped her head back to the table as her mother watched in amusement.
“George Knightly” Jane said “Too weak to be strong and too strong to be weak. Too nice to anyone he sees and confusing as hell…you’d be annoyed with someone like him in a year at most” She snorted “Heathcliffe…need I say more. He was cruel, domineering, hateful and hate filled with no redeeming qualities and I don’t care what English professors will have you believe the man was a swine” Hermione lifted disbelieving eye to her “Jacob Black?”
“From Twilight” Hermione answered with a blush because no one knew that she had devoured those books as quickly as she could.
“Oh” Jane nodded “He was whiny and seemed to think he should have a say in everything that Bella did which leads one to think that that would mean the man would be slightly controlling but mostly make you feel bad about your choices” Hermione chuckled and nodded “Edward Cullen…controlling, whiny, extremely old and his hair really annoyed me to high hell!”
“And Darcy?” Hermione added in when her mother stopped talking “You forgot him”
“Well now I liked him” Jane answered “He was mean but not really cruel, shy and distant, had few close friends but cared deeply for the ones he had and when he realized that he was in love with Elizabeth Bennett he was most passionate about it, doing anything to make her happy and to keep her happy even if it was at the expense of his own happiness”
“That doesn’t mean anything!” Hermione growled.
“Doesn’t it?” Her mother answered, raising both brows before she stood and put her cup in the sink “Have a good day, Hermione”

By the time Hermione got back to the castle it was dinner time. She didn’t have to attend unless she wanted to but she didn’t, in fact, seeing a bunch of children was not on the top of her to-do list. After her conversation with her mother she had visited Mrs. Weasley and talked with her and just like she knew she would the older, red-haired woman offered up advice. Then she visited Ginny and Harry and once Harry was busy with something she talked to Ginny about what happened. To her surprise Ginny was in full agreement with Jane Granger and told her to man up to her new responsibility. She told her that was time to get her head out of the clouds and start living the life in front of her.
She sat in his private sitting room and looked over the roster of students he had this year. She was unable to teach for him but she was sure that she could help him. While everyone told her that this was as hard on him as it was on her, she managed to pull out the advice that maybe making his life easier could make their life together better. By the time he came back, which was two hours after she had entered his office, she was busy at work making charts and had already spoken with Lucius about the future. She could tell that he was weary of her and in all honesty she didn’t blame him because her moods had been all over the place recently. She offered him a drink and a place to sit down and tried not to be offended when he sniffed the contents before taking a small sip.
“If I wanted to poison you” Hermione said as she sat down on a chair across from his “I know about twenty poisons that have no scent at all”
“Oh really” He responded.
“Of course” She answered and looked at her own drink. She looked up in time to see him squint in to the glass that only held fire whiskey and she laughed while standing “I assure you, Severus, that killing you wouldn’t benefit me at all nor is it something that I would do. All that is in that glass is fire whiskey and nothing more, it was even poured from your own stock”
“Then I thank you, my dear” He answered “But you have to understand my fear. My fiancée is a highly intelligent young woman that I made angry with my stupidity and my fear, for a while, was very real”
“I’m sure your ‘highly intelligent fiancée’ is better now” Hermione said with a strange fluttering in her belly “I bet she needed someone to open her eyes to the whole situation and remind her that this situation you find yourselves in is effecting you as much as it is her”
“I hope you’re right” Severus said looking at her with a small smile “Still what I did wasn’t right”
“What did you do?” She asked.
“I continually made excuses so I didn’t have to meet her parents” He answered.
“Why?” Hermione asked “I bet her parents are okay with it and even eager to meet you”
“My soon-to-be wife is in her twenties” He answered “And I am not. I am far too old for her…and far too ugly to be with someone who is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside” He would have to remember to thank his mind-healer for that phrase when he saw her next. Hermione surprised not only him but herself when she stood from her seat and walked over to him. She placed her palm against his cheek and turned his head slightly before pressing her lips against his in a kiss that he slowly deepened, giving her time to pull away. She allowed the kiss to only go on for a little while before pulling away with a blush and walked back to her chair.
“I have spoken to Lucius and Draco” She told him when he continued to stare at her with that intense and penetrating black stare that seemed to see right in to her soul “I have decided that I will leave work every night at four instead of five and unless I am working on something of the utmost importance, I will leave my work in the office”
“Working is important to you” He reminded her “Don’t let our…situation change who you are”
“I’m not” She answered “I am moving things around so I can be your wife and my own woman”
“What do you mean?” He asked, honestly confused.
“Well” She took a deep breath “You’ve changed many things to accommodate me and it’s time I did the same” He looked iffy on the situation “I want to continue working but it doesn’t have to dictate my whole life. So, when I come home from work I will help you with yours. Your job is stressful and my job as your wife is to help you make things less stressful…at least that’s how I see it”
“How are you going to help?” He asked curiously.
“I can do your grading” She answered “That will free up a lot of your evenings, I’ve spoken with Dumbledore and he’s given me permission to take some of your patrols”
“And what is this supposed to accomplish?” He asked, he couldn’t help but think that it would be nice to have half the load taken off of him but it seemed too good to be true.
“Less stress” She answered “Working 50/50 the way a marriage is supposed to and…well, I’m hoping that once we’re married and I have a baby you could take the extra time to spend it with our baby so it has both parents”
“We’re really going to have a baby, aren’t we?” He asked, seemingly surprised to have just figured that out.
“Yes” She answered with a soft smile “I’m actually a little excited for that fact. I want to have a baby around the time Ginny and Harry have one, that way they can be friends”
“Why do you want a baby?” He asked looking unsure.
“Oh come on” She laughed and for the first time since the law was passed she felt the trickle of hope, excitement and true happiness pass through her “We can take all the amazing things that our parents taught us and apply it to our children”
“My parents didn’t teach me anything good” He muttered, there was a slight blush on his cheeks when he admitted that. There was a memory of Lily bringing him food in the afternoons because there was no food in his house and he hadn’t eaten in days that passed in front of his minds eye.
“Then it will give us the opportunity to change things with our children” Hermione promised, he smiled a little at her and once again she moved closer. This time she didn’t kiss him, instead she ran her hand through his silky, soft hair and pulled him against her just holding him close to her. She could tell that there were some horrors in his past and she didn’t delude herself into thinking that he would ever trust her enough to tell her what had happened but she needed him to know that she was there for him.
A/N: What do you think? I’ve been working hard and have had many appointments. PLEASE REVIEW!!!! P.S. I've been reading Pride and Prejudice and of all the romantic hero's in books Mr. Darcy is the best, so when it comes to Snape i will probably repeatedly make that connection!!
