Falling into Destiny
Chapter Ten
Even as you paused in your movement you could feel the warmth from Blaise's hand curled around your shoulder. You could feel the exact moment he had flexed his hand and the urgency with which it did. Zabini didn't want you to stop nor did he want you to turn back to look at Draco as you had. To be fair that wasn't what you had wanted to do either. It was almost as though Draco's words had cast a spell over you, making the pull to look back at him too strong.
Ever so slowly and rather pompously if you had to describe it, Draco collected the few things he'd brought with him to the great hall. You were acutely aware of the tension in the air as Draco walked towards you and Blaise with a smirk on his lip.
"Yeah I thought that would get your attention."
Your jaw ached from how tightly you clenched it so that you wouldn't say anything you'd regret. And there were a lot of things you wanted to say to him; none of which were very nice.
"How is she going to be there?" You managed to squeeze out.
It has been so long since you had seen your mother. She was practically a ghost in your head, one that you weren't sure existed or not. At least that was how it felt. She was very real in fact. And very much still locked up for her crimes with no chance at release as far as you were aware.
"Loyalty isn't forgotten," Draco replied cryptically. "It still counts for something with certain people."
If Draco had the ability to kill with his eyes, Zabini would be dead. The level of animosity between the two boys was staggering. It was hard to imagine but you knew that prior to this whole mess they used to be friends. Which was ironic considering the words that Draco was using to get a point across. It was because of you that they had parted ways so rapidly.
"Let's go. He's just trying to bait you."
You knew what Blaise said was true. You also knew that it was working.
"When?"
Blaise gripped your shoulder tighter as he called your name. You paid him little mind as you focused your attention to Draco. You wanted to make sure that if you did this then he wasn't lying. That it wasn't just a ruse for him to get his way. At this point you wouldn't put it past him. Unfortunately you didn't have a supernatural ability to tell if someone was lying about stuff like this. You could sense desire, feel attraction like it was silk on your skin, but that didn't help in situations like this.
"Soon."
"How soon?"
"Over the holidays."
That wasn't as specific as you would have liked. Considering the nature of what had to happen to get your mother out so that you could see her, however, that was probably the best you could get. Especially from him.
"I'll see you at the carriages. That'll give you enough time to say goodbye," Draco had said his parting word with so much attitude that it was a wonder that he hadn't invented a new curse just for that occasion.
As he walked away you turned your attention back to Blaise. He did not seem at all pleased. It was ironic how you couldn't find a way to keep two men happy considering that's what a lot of your gifts were aimed towards. You had the vague, almost comical, feeling that your father would have laughed and tried to educate you on how to do better. His lessons of course would have focused on all the physical aspects and no doubt he would have wanted to be a very hands on teacher. That made the idea not as amusing as it started off as.
"Don't go."
His request was as straightforward as any demand. He had such a hard look to his softly curved eyes and a tight clench to his jaw that it almost looked like he cared. If you didn't know any better, if you didn't know that this was all because of him being enthralled, you might have enjoyed that. As it was, the angry look on his face was just a sharp reminder that he was practically your slave. Sure he could do things you didn't want but if your father was one to believe then his only motivation in life was to do what he thought was best for you. That could mean literally stepping in front of a dragon for you or it could mean locking you up in a room where no one could hear you scream. You weren't sure which of them would actually be the worst outcome and you didn't want to find out if he had it in him to try and complete the later.
"I'm not going to argue this with you," was what you finally settled on.
You moved forward, pulling out of Blaise's hold, without saying another thing to him. Your thoughts traveled all over the place. It could be that Draco was lying; that your mother wouldn't be at his family's manor at all over the break. Or it could be that she'd already be there once you got past the gates. Both ideas seemed unlikely. Draco had seemed too confident in dangling his mom over you to make it seem like a lie he'd thought up on the spot. And if she'd already broken out or had been broken out then it would be all over the wizarding papers; there would be no way to avoid it. Which left you with the frightening idea that he might be telling the truth. But what did that mean?
It was hard to stop your thoughts from going round and round as you trudged your painful journey to the Slytherin common room. Thankfully you'd pulled out the heaviest versions of school cloaks for the winter, layering one on top of a standard thickness one every day. It helped a little but not nearly so much as to make you forget the bite that was in the air, nor the snow that piled up where people didn't walk. The cold still was your bitter enemy as you made your way, even though you weren't nearly as starving as you had been for the better part of two years it was still a blow. The fire roaring in the grand fireplace of the common room was a blessing. You moved over to it as though drawn there, placing your hands on the warm mantle as you stood at one of the corners.
Your eyes searched the common room as though the room itself was going to give you some of the answers you needed. It didn't. All that it gave you was a rising headache as you realized that it was starting to fill up. Which meant that people were going to be witness to you leaving the castle. You hoped that they were too self-absorbed in their own plans to care what you did; that's how it usually was. Though there was a knot in your stomach over the fact that Pansy definitely had it in for you and she had more than an obvious desire for Draco. If or when she saw you get into a carriage with him or if the conversation between Blaise, Draco, and yourself somehow made it to her ears she was going to get nasty. It might have been your last year at hogwarts, even going on your last term actually, but that didn't mean that you wanted to leave too much animosity. After all, she'd already thrashed your reputation at Hogwarts. You didn't want to try and see what damage could be wrought on your professional reputation once you left the school.
After a few minutes you'd moved away from the mantle and started the seemingly endless walk back to your dorm. Of course, it was short but the feelings that gripped your mind and heart made it seem like the longest trudge. You'd somehow managed to make this whole situation confusing. Once you'd gotten to the dorm you'd packed a small case full of the creature comforts that you brought with you every year; everything else would be at the manor already. After that was taken care of the trip to the waiting carriages didn't seem to take nearly as long.
You placed your small suitcase next to you in the carriage after you climbed in, waiting for the thestral pulled carriage to get a move on. Unlike the ones that the school used during the start of the fall term the carriage you were currently in had a ceiling and the door closed entirely. It gave a little bit of relief from the pressing cold waiting outside. There was also a small globe of blue bell fire in a ventilated round container hanging from the ceiling of the carriage. It might have been a head banging hazard but it was also a source of light and warmth which you were extremely grateful for. Sure you might still have needed to wrapped your arms around yourself to make sure that your robe didn't open as you waited to go but it was definitely a better environment than being outside.
A blast of cold air brought your eyes to the door. The person who stepped in shouldn't have surprised you in the least - like you, Blaise hadn't even bothered to change. Unlike you, it seemed as though he didn't bother to pack anything for the holiday. Unexpectedly, given that you'd almost imagined he would have tried to have you sit in his lap, Blaise took the seat across from you. He was silent as he took a seat and it seemed even more so as he stared at you. You attempted not to notice as you leaned your head against the black interior wall. Another person joined you in the carriage and this was the person you expected, though how Draco knew you were in this specific carriage was the real wonder. Then again same could have been said of Blaise. It wasn't as though there weren't a lot of carriages and students trying to get home for the break; there were more than one and a half thousand students that were going to make their way to Hogsmeade so they could get on the Hogwarts express. You had avoided this particular hustle and bustle for the last few years.
As Draco took a seat next to you, your small suitcase the only barrier, the carriage started off to a slow crawl. The thestrals pulling the carriages were strong and silent, and though you couldn't see them you were still quite nervous over the fact that they were there. You hadn't had a problem with them yet but you were still waiting for the other shoe to drop; after all, all other creatures didn't seem to like you. As the cart picked up in speed you wondered if that was because they were different than the rest or if that was just how well trained of a herd they were. You peaked out at the world by moving aside a small part of the heavy fabric that covered the window beside you.
It really was beautiful outside. The trees were dark and tall, majestically stretching up to the sky and creating the most interesting of shadows. They contrasted with the snow that piled up around the dirt road, the layer of white scattering what light made it through the trees. Unfortunately the glass window of the carriage was cold and moving aside the drapes let the cold seep into your hands even through the gloves. You let the curtain fall back down, rubbing your fingers over one another in your lap as you leaned your head back.
Warm hands gently pulled off your gloves before wrapping around your hands, rubbing heat into them. It wasn't a surprise that Blaise had taken your hands as that was no doubt what he thought would have been best. Nor was it a surprise that Draco sneered from his spot beside you.
"Can't keep your hands to yourself for five minutes, can you? It's pathetic."
And it had been going so well too.
"Why do--" You started, unable to hold your tongue after the mentally exhaustion you'd put yourself through during the last hour.
"I wasn't talking to you," Draco cut you off, though he kept his voice quiet.
You went quiet as you slowly pulled your hands away from Blaise, slipping your gloves back on in an attempt to capture and keep the warmth he had imbued upon them. Your eyes turned to Draco and he and Blaise continued to stare off at one another. You were suddenly grateful that for whatever reason, this carriage hadn't been filled to capacity; that was a stroke of luck, actually.
"There's no need to be rude just because you're jealous, Draco," Blaise returned in a calm, collected voice.
"There's nothing to be jealous of, Zabini," Draco said in a much colder tone. "You're just the latest passing fancy."
Your eyes went down to your lap as you reminded yourself why you were doing this. His words were quite insulting - they had the insinuation that there had been quite a few interests before Blaise. That was untrue; Blaise was the first person you had ever enthralled and it wasn't like he'd exactly been someone you'd even fancied prior to that. He'd just become...useful. You'd be lying if you said that he hadn't endeared himself to you in some small way but to call him someone you actually fancied might be stretching it a bit. Thankfully Blaise didn't seem to be off put nor did he seem to believe Draco. That only seemed to make Draco's attitude worse, however, as he continued to simmer in his own thoughts.
You couldn't get out of the carriage fast enough when it finally came to a stop near the start of Hogsmeade. It might not have been very proper of you do do so considering that it would have been better etiquette to wait for both Draco and Blaise to exist first, but you didn't want to wait. The cold rushed out at you with an insane amount of force but even that was preferable to sitting inside of the carriage with the two fifth years. You clenched your teeth and suitcase firmly in your hands as you started walking towards the Hogwart train.
You didn't get very fair. Draco pulled you to a stop as he wrapped his hand around yours. You stared at him incredulously even as you felt the slow simmer of anger coming from Blaise.
"We're not taking the train."
"How do you plan to get home then?" Blaise asked as he came to stop near you and Draco.
Blaise's very presence seemed enough to keep that glare on the fair haired fifth year's face. You squeezed your hand to try and deflect Draco's attention which only seemed to work in the barest of sense. You saw his eyes flicker over to you but even the slightest motion from Blaise made his focus switch back to the other male.
"Mother and Father will send someone to personally see us home," Draco spoke with a tone that almost seemed as though he were congratulating himself on winning something.
There seemed to be a sort of power struggle happening between the two of them, one which you were rapidly starting to understand. It was a battle of egos between two people who used to be friends. Of course, since you were the reason they'd divided you also happened to be the conduit for this egotistical standoff. Normally it would have been annoying. Right now, as you were standing in the cold, it was double so.
You sat your luggage down on the frozen ground and reached out with your hand towards Blaise's cheek. Despite Draco's hold on your hand you managed to close the distance between Blaise and yourself. Your lips found his for a soft, lingering kiss to try and placate this possessive side that was showing in the enthralled man. You felt anger, rimmed in what you could only describe of jealousy now that Blaise had put that thought in your head, flair up behind you as Draco witnessed the whole thing. You tried not to think about that as you slowly moved away from Blaise with an look of intent in your eyes.
"Don't spoil this with a fight; we will be the more mature ones," you told him in a whisper, lingering just close enough so that you could slowly pull at the energy he so willingly gave.
Your eyes fluttered closed at the heat that he returned, pulling you into another kiss. His arms wrapped around you, hand slipping through your hair. You could feel life giving energy move from his body into your own at a slow and steady pace. Your skin warmed under his touch but as you held onto him you realized he was less warm than before. And he was only getting colder. You broke apart from the kiss, realizing that he was starting to shiver. You realized with a harsh, sudden clarity that you had taken way too much from him over the past week. As you moved back you also noticed that he seriously looked ready to pass out.
"I will remember that," you said in an attempt to placate his ego. "Now go. Tell your mother I said hello when you see her; maybe the two of you can come over for an afternoon."
Blaise nodded as he turned around. The moment he got far enough away, Draco reminded you that you'd never actually let go of his hand by pulling you back towards him. You flushed in a sort of embarrassment as you realized what kind of a spectacle that must have been.
"What...was that?" Draco asked as turned you to face him, almost dropping his hands away from you once you were like they were on fire.
"A goodbye."
"No. I'm talking about something else. What did you just do to me?"
You stared at him, baffled at what he meant. Seriously, what was he talking about. Draco almost seemed like he was about to let it go and storm off, like he did with everything else. Something stopped him though as he searched your face for answers regarding questions you didn't even know.
"You made me feel something because I sure as hell wouldn't have enjoyed that by myself."
"Enjoyed what?" you demanded, though your mind filled in the answer the moment after you'd asked him. "Wait, what did you feel?"
"It was like a rush of heat and...never mind. So what did you do to me?"
"You felt that?" You demanded back at him in disbelief.
"Why would I lie?"
"...it wouldn't be the first time," you muttered.
Draco seemed frustrated with this whole conversation, much in the same that you were. Though your frustration came from the fact that you didn't know if it was your fault that he'd felt something or if it was, despite what he claimed, something that he'd felt all by himself. Was it possible that you had passed on the sensations? It might have been, he had been holding your hand after all. But you had never done something like that before. Then again, you'd never kissed a man while holding onto the hand of another one so it was possible. And given everything you'd slowly discovered about your extra abilities it might have even been plausible.
"I don't know," you admitted to him. "It might have been me. It might have also been you."
"This wasn't from me."
Draco took a step forward faster than you could reflexively take a step back. His hands dove under your robes, curving around your hips and pulling you close. With wide eyes you realized just how affected he'd gotten; unless he was a serious voyer, that obvious of a reaction would not have been normal. And if he was a voyeur then Draco would have known that by now and probably would have known better than to try and blame you. Or so you would have thought. For a moment you could have sworn he'd been about to kiss you despite the fact that he'd seemingly been trying to blame you for the lust coursing through your body like you had hexed him with it. You felt your body tingle from the deep pulse of energy that stirred right under Draco's skin, your eyes lighting up crystalline blue as Draco slowly moved his head to the side as if in slow motion.
A sudden crack of apparition made you jump and turn your head to the direction. You felt Draco's lips pause the barest of space from touching your cheek and there was a rather unhappy sound that slipped past them after that. You felt him turning his head towards where your attention had gone as you fought to stop the hunger from pushing forward more than it already was. You could feel Draco digging into you through various layers as it was and you could feel your energy reaching out to him. Blaise had made sure you weren't starving but the hunger was always going to be there. You hoped that Draco would understand what was going on when you closed your eyes and leaned your head against his neck. After the last few minutes of contact between not one, but two males it was no wonder that your eyes were glowing.
"Your mother and father are expected you, Master Draco."
Oh that voice was familiar. The last time you'd heard it, however, was over the summer. It's soft masculine tones made you shiver as you realized that the Malfoys had to send the most attractive servant that they had on call. After Dobby had been set free they'd been forced to hire wizarding staff to see to all of the domestic chores and upkeep of the manner. It was surprising how many staff members, even ones who could perform magic, were needed to replace just a single house elf. Then again, not all of them wanted to work at the manor twenty-four-seven so that was probably why. The man that they had sent, however, was one of two that did stay all the time. Which realistically was probably why he'd been sent but still...kind of felt like they were tempting you into something extremely naughty given your current state.
"Shall I collect Miss Black's things?"
You weren't offended by the deferment; you were quite used to it as you'd grown up under such treatment. It was just how things were done - Draco ranked above you in the household as far as etiquette dictated. Therefore all the decisions technically were his choice. Of course, his mother and father outranked him fairly equally but that wasn't the important part of the issue. You felt Draco nod even as his hands started to move out from under your robes. It was obvious that the butler, Adam, noticed but he didn't say anything. Technically Draco and you were married after all; even if that was going to be dissolved by the end of the month.
You tensed as Draco moved away; winter was still a real thing. Besides that issue there was also the fact that you had the sneaking suspicion that this escort included side along apparition. Given what you might have just found out about your powers might not have been the wisest action. It would require you to grab on to Adam in order to ensure that you traveled by his skill and power and not your own. If your touch was inducing the sensations that you currently felt, if that's what was actually happening, then it would be folly to do it. Then again the alternative was to use your own energy and who knew the next time you could safely replenish it…
"Stop procrastinating," Draco said as he narrowed his eyes at you when he realized you were lagging behind.
You narrowed yours right back at him. Fine. If that's how he wanted to play then that was just fine.
"Fine. But it will be your fault."
Swiftly you moved forward, leaving him to wonder what you were talking about. You wrapped your arm around Adam's as his hand was taken up by holding onto your suitcase. In doing so you felt the tremor race up both yours and his body from the desire still eating away at your insides, betting to be sated. Draco noticed the instant change in the man before him and you watched as that realization passed over his face. The look of deep seated anger was definitely becoming a permanent fixture of his.
The second that Draco grabbed onto the butler's other hands, the group apparition whisked you away to Malfoy Manor.
