~~~A Year and a Half Ago~~~
Draco walked in to the manor with his usual grace but only half-heartedly sneering at the House-elves as he didn’t dislike them as much as he used to. He’d missed dinner with his parents but most likely his father hadn’t been there and his mother was too busy looking in the mirror to notice their absence. He’d been out with his friends at the bar as usual, while Zabini and Nott seemed to live at the bar he was losing interest. Maybe his father had been right when he told him that at some point all the childish partying would grow old and he would find himself longing to marry and have a family. Easier said than done though thanks to his father, the Greengrass family told him that he could not marry Astoria or Daphne because he’d been a death eater. The Parkinson’s had always been trying to push him and Pansy together since they were children. There had always been one problem with that, Pansy liked women almost as much as he did. It would never have worked.
Draco walked past his mother’s room on the way to his own, he heard a bump and stopped, he put his hand on the door handle but pulled it back. To date he had walked in on his mother and one of her lovers four times and didn’t want to again. He shook his head and walked in to his bedroom slamming the door shut to let her and her company know that he was home so to (hopefully) keep it down. He took off his tie and threw it in the bathroom for the elves to clean up, untucked his shirt and unbuttoned the top three buttons before sitting down at his writing desk. He sifted through his mail and with a noise of interest he broke the seal on a letter from Astoria Greengrass and opened it up.
Dear Draco,
I shouldn’t be writing to you. Mother and Father have forbidden it but you have a right to know what has happened. I gave birth to a baby boy last month and he is yours, bright, white-blonde hair…he was beautiful but my parents made me give him up. The knowledge of my pregnancy before marriage would have ruined me and you know how my parents feel about your family now. Take care of him, if you can find him.
Astoria Greengrass
Draco leaned back in his desk chair and reread the letter a few more times. He had a son out there? His father was not likely to be very happy about this little fact but family was important so he would insist they find him. He kicked off his shoes with a sigh looking at the letter once again as if expecting it to change what it had said. He felt oddly…proud to know that he had a son out there, that there was another part of him in the world. There was a loud, horrible scream from his mother bedroom and Draco shot to his feet dropping the letter on the desk. He looked back at it quickly seeing that it fell behind the desk, he’d get to that after he saw what that bastard was doing to his mother.
He swung open the door only to be hit with a curse the minute it opened, he shot back several feet and landed hard on his back. Then two people went in to his bedroom and dragged him to his feet, he fought as much as he could. Finally he was hit over the head, stunning him enough that he stopped fighting and they threw him on the bed and tied his ankles together. He could hear hushed voices whispering in the doorway as his captor knelt at his side and leaned over him.
“You should have stayed with us, Draco” He heard “I said have one more drink but you insisted on leaving”
Draco stopped moving when he realized he knew who was talking to him then he brought his elbow back and smashed it in to the mans face. The two of them fought and rolled on his bed before he was held back down with a knife to his throat. Why hadn’t the house-elves come to help yet? He heard another man say ‘finish him off and lets go…get rid of his wand’ The person that had him pinned dragged him up causing him to fight more but he tied his hands behind his back and forced him to his knees taking a moment to look around the room.
“I always knew you were a coward, Nott!” Draco hissed “Now, you’re just proving it”
“I tried to keep you safe!” Theodore Nott answered “I tried to keep you out drinking. But you just had to go home for a goodnights rest instead…it would have only been your whore of a mother if you’d stayed out with us”
“And Blaise” Draco asked looking for his wand “Is he the other person here?”
“Zabini?” He snorted “Are you kidding. That muggle-loving blood traitor wouldn’t know this plan if I had left the blueprints out for him”
“Then who?” Draco asked, they must have moved his wand because it had been on his desk but now he couldn’t find it and his wandless magic was failing him.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” He asked with a sneered. Then there was white, hot pain across his throat and he tried to scream but nothing came out, he saw the blood pooling around him and then he was pushed forward and landed in the pool of his own blood. Breathing was impossible and his body was twitching, there was no sound anymore and there wasn’t any pain anymore either. The last thing he saw before there was only the blackness of death was Mimsy, the youngest elf they had popping in the room. She raised her arms and a blue-white light shot from her hands and then Daphne Greengrass was lying in front of him some feet away, her eyes wide and unseeing. Then…he was dead.
~~~End~~~
Lucius was standing outside of Hermione’s bedroom, Andromeda had come right over to help no matter that it had been Lucius asking for help. It was no lie that he didn’t like her though he couldn’t really remember if she had ever done anything to warrant his dislike. He was pretty sure that it had more to do with her being disowned and banished from the Black family line that caused this ingrained dislike of her. It didn’t matter, news of her amazing abilities as a Healer were known all over wizarding London and even further he was sure. She’d been in there for so long he was sure that was either a great sign or a terrible one. Being in there that long meant that Hermione wasn’t dead but it led one to think that she was more gravely injured than originally thought.
“Lucius” Andromeda’s soft voice called him out of his worrying and he rushed over to her.
“How is she?” He asked “What happened to her and is she going to be okay…when can I go in?”
“She is in a magically induced coma for the time being and will likely wake up in a day or two” She answered him “She will be fine and her brain isn’t affected at all”
“But what happened?” He asked.
“I’ve only seen a few cases like this” She told him “We, as humans, can only see death if we ourselves die or if we are seers and can predict death which is extremely uncommon”
“So she saw death?” He asked
“You have ghosts here” She said and he nodded “I think one of them showed her their death and what’s more is I think that vision was forced on her which makes it worse” She thought of her wording for a moment “To see death through the eyes of a ghost is to allow the ghost to touch your very brain with their own cold, dead one. At best it causes a severe head ache like a cold headache and a possible shut down in the brain and that is with permission”
“Okay…” He led.
“Hermione’s brain was nearly frozen” Andromeda explained “It happened so suddenly the shut-down couldn’t keep up with it and that was her only saving grace. Because it happened to fast the shutting down was sloppy and half-done, that was why she was bleeding” He swore “The ghost must have realized he or she was hurting her because it stepped back but the damage had already been started”
“So how did you save her?” He asked.
“I brought her brain back up to the temperature that it should have been at” She answered “The coma will let her heal at a pace that is good for her but what she saw…that will likely have an effect on her. She could become depressed and withdrawn and even suicidal”
“Why?” He asked.
“Because she saw something that she was never meant to see” She answered “She saw what the ghost saw, felt what it felt and died when it died and that never should have happened” She frowned “She may have seen something that she can change, Miss Granger is a smart and driven woman so I hope that she will merely be sad but move on but she is going to need love and not fighting”
“I can do that” He promised and she raised an eyebrow at him but said nothing. He walked her to the receiving room and to the Floo network before speaking again “I will, of course, pay you handsomely for coming out so late and will financially back your department”
“Don’t” She said “There is something else you can do for me instead”
“Anything” He said.
“My grandson Teddy” She said “They won’t let him in to any primary or preschools because of Remus’s condition”
“I will make sure the best one lets him in…” Lucius started but she shook her head.
“No” She said “Because then he will be harassed for having to be helped by you because of his father. I want him to have a friend or a few friends, you have Scorpius now” She smiled “Please, allow them to grow together. To learn together, to be friends and maybe we’ll be able to add more kids in to their little circle…but their cousins, Lucius…let them be friends”
“I will send a letter inviting you daughter, her husband and the child over as soon as Hermione is well” He promised “Thank you again”
“Floo me if there is anything that you need” She said “And when she wakes up so I can check her over and make sure that she’s okay”
“Thank you” He said and once she was gone he walked back to Hermione’s bedroom and sat in the corner of the bedroom watching her sleep.
A/N: There you go. I wrote about five different versions of Draco’s death but went with this one. I hope you like it…or well…you know, find it acceptable.
