Chapter 9
Unlike most times before going out, Hank was standing in front of the mirror in his bedroom staring at his reflection. Normally he didn't give a shit what he looked like, tossed on what he was most comfortable in and called it good. Tonight was different. He wanted to look his best for this outing.
His hair was tamed as well as he could manage, he was in his nice dragonhide boots and pants, ones which fit him like a second skin and showed off what he wanted. He didn't have his shirt on yet, but was going with a white silk shirt. Of course, he'd put his normal leather jacket on over it as he didn't go anywhere without it because of the natural resistance to spells, plus the ones he paid to have applied and the pockets inside where he kept the standard to keep himself safe. As he stared in the mirror, he ignored what it simpered at him, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. Leave it to him to have a mirror which was not only female, but seemed to like the way he looked. He kept vowing to replace it, but never did for whatever reason. When he finished fiddling with his hair, figuring it was as good as it would get, he sighed and looked at his chest. Of course, he still looked good there with being toned and all that since he went out of his way to make damned sure he stayed in shape so he could protect himself. Mostly he ignored that part, though was slightly focused there tonight because of the image he wanted to convey. Not like Sirius would see him like this tonight, but he couldn't help but focus. As he did, his eyes drifted across the tattoo of some runes used for protection on his left pec. He had it done to help, though he knew it was only minimal. Besides, they looked rather cool. If he turned around, he would see the tattoo of a thunderbird which took up almost his whole back. He thought it was great since it was the Magical sort that moved and reacted to what you were doing or to people. However, his eyes drifted to the multitude of scars over his chest, knowing there were more on his back and legs. No, they weren't huge and most wouldn’t notice them, but he did, something he was rather self conscious about. While he was using some ointment he bought which was gradually getting rid of them, he still saw them. One of the bits he kept meaning to do was go to their kind of plastic surgeon and have them removed, it just kept ending up shoved aside with all he had to do.Hank forced himself to pull his eyes away and focus elsewhere lest it bug him too much. With a shake of his head, he snagged his shirt and pulled it over his head then debated on whether to tuck it in or not, finally going with the neater look and tucking it in. As he worked on that bit, he asked Yama, who was on his perch watching what he was doing intently, “You're coming, right? I don't expect a problem, but would feel better if you're there. Besides, I'll buy you your normal.”When he heard a familiar hiss from the bird, he nodded, “Good. Shouldn't take you long to get there. I'm meeting Sirius at the big park in the center of Glastonbury. We'll then go from there.” Straightening up when he finished, he looked back in the mirror to make sure everything was just so and gave a pleased nod when it was. Good. He then grabbed his watch and slipped it on. Perfect.“I think this is good, don't you?” He asked the bird after giving himself the once over in the mirror a last time. When the bird hissed again, he grinned a real grin, not one of his normal cold ones, something which softened his features and made him look younger. “Yeah, this is good,” he said with a nod, pleased with how he looked.Despite his confidence with so much in his life, Hank was nervous about tonight. He hadn't really felt the pang of lust he did about Sirius with anyone else, so he wanted this to go as smoothly as he could manage. If it just started moving in that direction, he'd be happy with it. He just hoped Sirius was seeing this the same way. The last thing he wanted was to end up getting more overt over it.After stepping back and giving a nod, he summoned what he needed while slipping on his jacket. “Go on and get going. I'll meet you there.” He told Yama, tucking what he needed in his pockets. It was a tad early, but he wanted to get there to check everything out to make sure it was safe. In these times, it was better safe than end up in the middle of a nightmare. When the bird hissed and took off, his wings making a soft clap of thunder, Hank watched him soar out the window then grow in size, heading in the direction he needed to go. With nod, Hank began to double check he had everything he needed then was ready himself. After stiffening his spine, he headed downstairs, ready to leave.
“You look quite nice,” Remus told Sirius as he came into the kitchen. He was dressed in some nice jeans and a plain shirt, but they fit well on him, with one of his better robes over them, though not buttoned.
“Thanks,” Sirius said, sitting down with a soft groan. “I wasn’t sure what to wear, honestly, as he didn't say the type of place, so I went with casual since he said pub. We'll see.”“I'm sure this is fine,” Remus said. Sobering up, he said, “If anything seems off or wonky, send the signal and I'll be there as fast as I can manage. Tonks is coming over to just spend time, so we'll be around. Don't worry about interrupting anything.”“I will,” Sirius agreed. “Doubt it's needed, though. If he was going to do anything wonky, he would have done it the other day when we were alone. I think it's just what he said. At least I hope, and not for the reason that it's a setup.”“It's been a long time since you were interested in someone, Sirius, even if it is just for some fun. Nervousness is warranted and expected. Especially since this one is so much younger than you,” Remus told him with a soft chuckle and smile.“Yeah, I know,” Sirius replied with a sheepish grin, scratching his chin. “Not used to feeling like this as it wasn't this way in the past. I'll manage.”“As we grow older, we see things differently, like you are,” Remus told him simply, still smiling. “Happens even to you.”“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Sirius chuckled. “Don't rub it in, Moony.”“Just stating facts, Padfoot,” Remus replied with another chuckle. “You'll do fine once you figure out Hank's leanings. Then it'll be like riding a broom again; once you know how, you never forget and can do it easily once more.”“I hope,” Sirius told him honestly with a shake of his head.“Just worry about enjoying yourself and everything else will fall into place,” Remus schooled gently. “Don't worry about 'business' tonight. Just have fun.”“That I plan on,” Sirius admitted with a grin. It would be the first time he'd gone out with someone he didn't know from the past since his release from Azkaban. Though strange, something which had him on edge, he was looking forward to it. He just had to get over his case of nerves to do so. He would, once he was settled down, he just had to get there and go with it. Then he'd be fine and start to learn Hank's leanings. Once he knew, it'd be like riding a broom, just as Remus said.
Sirius was finding he was actually enjoying this outing. While nervous going in, he relaxed soon enough. The only thing which had him off-kilter was at the start; seeing Hank when he Apparated into the park. He was astounded how good the man looked in the clothes he had on. Well, it stunned him, but also added more fuel to the interest part. Yeah, he was going to see where this went, that's for damned sure, and try to get what he wanted out of it.
Once they settled into the pub, he relaxed plenty and was enjoying himself. This one wasn't like the Leaky or Three Broomsticks, more like—well, a Muggle pub with plenty of distractions, like the music pouring out of what Hank called a jukebox. He knew some of the songs from the Wireless, but the others he didn't. Hank explained they were Muggle bands or singers, not something he would be acquainted with. Either way, he loved it.Hank apparently knew the bartender because they ended up with a choice seat and a pitcher of a very good beer waiting on them. When they ordered, it was delivered faster than any order in a pub or restaurant Sirius had ever been in. He also had a good chuckle when he was told Yama was joining them and Hank had ordered a plate of food for the bird as well. Though it was humorous, Sirius understood why. With as bad as times were with so much, it was always best to keep up your guard and have protection close. Only a fool would tangle with that damned bird anyway! After finishing the meal, something they made small talk through, the two were settled back listening to the music, since Hank had plugged some coins into the jukebox and picked out a ton of songs. Both of them avoided the topic of the war and anything related to 'business'. Sirius had talked about some bits, like school and their 'adventures' there then after, though avoiding talking about Azkaban other than brief mentions. Hank had chuckled through plenty of the stories he told. When Sirius finished a story about some pranks they pulled, Hank chuckled, shaking his head, “Sounds like Hogwarts was a good school to go to. I assume there were some issues, especially with the time you went because of what was going on, but it seems like it was a good one.”“It was, and still is, despite so much that has happened,” Sirius nodded, smiling a bit. “Where did you go?” He didn't figure that question would be taken badly. It might have been mentioned at some point, but he couldn't remember.“Bronx Wizards Academy,” Hank told him with a sigh. “Not nearly as good as Hogwarts.”“Heard of a couple schools out of the States, but not that one,” Sirius told him, settling back after refilling his glass.“It's not well known or one anyone wants to talk about,” Hank shrugged, doing the same and topping off his own beer and making sure Yama had plenty as well.“Why?” Sirius asked, brow furrowed a bit. He knew the names of the schools in the States which were for the criminal element and the one Hank mentioned wasn't one of them.“Let's say it's the kind of school people send kids to so they can be shut of them. You know, families who don't want them around for various reasons, like Muggleborns who can't tolerate magical children or ones who are half-creature mixes, werewolves and the like. They accept anyone and have a low tuition rate, also allowing them to stay all year round. As long as you pay the tuition up front, you're shut of your 'problem' for the rest of your life. Plenty send kids there for that reason or because they've been in trouble or are a danger and aren't welcome where they're from. This school asks no questions and deals when they show up. It's also in one of the really bad parts of the Bronx.” Hank explained.Sirius winced at what was said then sighed, having heard of schools like those. “Ouch,” he muttered, shaking his head.“One of those bits.” Hank told him with a resigned tone. “I was the youngest who ever went at the time. There have been a couple ones younger since. Relatives wanted shut of me and shipped me off when I was seven. Couldn't tolerate someone Magical around.” This wasn't any earth-shattering secret as everyone knew what the school was like. It was the sort which had the bare minimum when it came to everything and what was required. Its main purpose was to house the Wizards that families didn't want and was run more like a juvenile prison than a school. It was needed honestly, because some who were sent there, a small minority, were already on the path to being hardcore criminals, having plenty of charges already racked up against them. It was more of a warehouse for the unwanted and the best training ground for budding criminals. It sure wasn't known for its academic excellence, more like making money by taking the 'problems' off family's hands.“Muggleborn then?” Sirius asked, assuming that was the case since other families dealt accordingly.“Don't think so the way the relatives talked,” Hank explained with a shake of his head. “I think I'm a Half-blood, but can't be sure. Mum was a Muggleborn, but it sounded like Dad wasn't. Not sure there.”“You were raised by relatives then? What happened to your family?” Sirius inquired, hoping it wasn't a touchy topic.“Yeah,” Hank nodded. “My family was killed in a car accident from what I was told. Don't remember as I was too young. Was about as welcome in their home as someone with the plague. Disrupted their lives and it was clear I wasn't wanted. The school was a better option for me, honestly, even as bad as it could get at times. Would rather deal with those in school than my relatives,” he admitted with a snort before taking a sip of his beer. “Did fine by myself since then, so not a problem.”Now Sirius could understand why Hank did what he does. It was probably something he learned at that time in his life rather than career counseling like they went through. “You have, from what I can tell.”None of this was great secrets and could easily be found out by the standard inquiry, so Hank wasn't bothered by it. “You're a Pureblood, aren't you? I think I heard that somewhere. Well, and your relation to Luci's wife.” He asked, turning the topic away from himself.“I am,” Sirius confirmed with a nod. Then he chuckled and added, “Supposedly one of the big families in those lines, the ones who align themselves with the other side of this mess and lean to the dark. I bucked that trend. Made Mother irate all the time. Even now, her painting still goes on diatribes at me using words like foul filth and greatest disappointment. I'm sure she's rolling in her grave knowing I'm the head of the House of Black and the home she made almost a shrine to the darker aspects is the headquarters of the Order. Rather gives me an evil chuckle every time I think about it.”“Oh, I bet she can feel that burn all the way in her grave,” Hank chuckled, grinning, leaning back, arm draped over the back of the booth. “Perfect revenge.”“It is,” Sirius admitted, big grin on his face. Sobering up, he added, “I think she kept holding out for my brother turning back up.” Before Hank could ask, he explained what Regulus had done then shook his head, “She couldn't accept he was probably dead. My thought is she figured he would tend to whatever with me when he turned back up. Still not sure what happened to him, but sure the evil arse probably had him killed for something or other. Either way, her oversight left me as the head of the family, something she's probably still screeching about in the afterlife. I think if she had known it would come to this, she would have willed it to Cissy or batty Bella to make sure I wasn’t put in charge. Either way, it bit her.”“Nothing she can do either,” Hank added, smirking a bit.“Exactly,” Sirius said with a huge grin.Sirius wasn't sure how to proceed from here, but wanted some basic information so he knew what he was dealing with. After a couple moments, he observed, “You don't seem like you have anyone in your life.” Then he waited to see what Hank had to say.“Just Yama,” Hank chuckled, grinning. “And some like Luci who want a toy boy. They aren't getting anywhere.”“Can't see the attraction to that myself,” Sirius laughed, shaking his head. “It's one thing to have someone who is a buddy for some fun, but never saw the attraction for having a kept whoever.”“Me either,” Hank agreed. “The idea of being beholden to someone for whatever all the time doesn't appeal to me. Especially with ones like Luci. That's a dangerous game if there ever was one.”“Very much so,” Sirius agreed, sobering up. “Apt to find yourself in the middle of a mess before you realize it then you're screwed, and not in a way you want.”“Exactly,” Hank told him.“You don't have anyone either, do you? You've mentioned a Remus, but he seems more like a friend,” Hank then asked, wanting to know so he knew what he was dealing with.“Remus is just a friend; one I had all the way back in school. We've been tight since then. It's nothing more. And not ever wanted anyone on a permanent basis, even before Azkaban. Rather liked just playing the field and having some fun.” Sirius told him, smiling a bit. Then he added, chuckling, “Plenty have asked about me and Remus over the years in that capacity since we're close. You should see the look on his face when they do. It's a right riot! Not to mention the huffing noises he makes and the long-suffering sigh. I love hearing them ask just for those reasons. Then I get to rib him for days afterwards and get to hear them more.”Hank laughed at the description and shook his head. “I imagine it's a riot!”“It is, trust me,” Sirius grinned, shoulders shaking. “It's even better when he gets all huffy with me, swearing I encourage the speculation just to get a laugh. I don't, but can't pass up the humor in it when it happens. Then he does the pouting thing for a week or so. Even that is hilarious and just adds to the humor.”“Oh, I bet,” Hank chuckled, still grinning a little.Sirius then went on to describe some more memorable instances of what he told Hank about. As he did, he watched Hank's face. When he laughed or really smiled, he was far more handsome than normal. He liked it, honestly. While he didn't know for sure, he was certain the man didn't really laugh much. Yeah, he liked what he saw.
As it crept on towards midnight, the two finally called it a night. While Hank had nothing to do, Sirius always ended up waking early, whether he liked it or not. With everything going on, he also had to worry about plenty of bits, so he needed to go.
While walking back to the park they'd Apparate from, Sirius said, “I had a good time. A better one than I've had in a while, honestly. If you don't mind, I'd like to do it again. My treat this time. I'll pick something not high profile but that we'll both like.”“I'd like that,” Hank admitted, grinning internally. As he kept an eye out while they walked, hand on his wand like it always was, he said, “When you come in for the next meeting, let me know what you want to set up so I can free up time. Either that or owl me before then.”“Give me a day or so to figure out what we have going on, then I'll get with you,” Sirius told him with a nod. Yeah, he'd come up with something good. Either way, he planned to spend plenty of time with Hank if he could at all manage.Once they reached the park, Sirius fought the urge to kiss the man to let his intentions be known, but stayed himself. No, now wasn't the time. Instead, he said his goodbyes then Apparated away.Hank waited until Sirius was gone then grinned a bit. Not the cold kind he was known for, but a real one. This had been great. Even if it didn't go anywhere like he wanted, he'd enjoy spending time with Sirius. Over his time, he hadn't let anyone close, and just had acquaintances. It was nice to go out with someone and shoot the shit like friends would. Yeah, he wanted more of this.Since Yama had left already, Hank decided to head for home. He wasn't tired, but wasn't going to go out to his normal type of places without his companion with how everything was anymore. Though he wasn't tired, he didn't feel like dealing with the normal sort he did. Maybe he would just stay home once he arrived there. A nice quiet night reading or soaking in the tub would do him good. Besides, he wanted to plan how to get this moving how he wanted. Now more than ever he wanted Sirius in his life in the capacity of a lover. He just had to figure out how to get it there. He would, it might just take time. As he was the patient sort, he'd manage. And would love it when he managed!
