“Scorpius honey, can you go up to the storage room and get some extra china?”
“Yes.”
Scorpius began to climb the staircase of Malfoy manner. He had been home for only a few days and already his mother, Astoria, had him hard at work with preparations for her annual Christmas party. He did not mind however, and welcomed any activity to take his thoughts off of how much he was missing Albus.
The storage room was not for storage at all. It was in fact the master bedroom. After the death of his grandparents his mother had refused to use the room. Not out of sadness, but of distain for her now deceased in-laws. Scorpius’s father had not argued. It would have not been worth the effort. Malfoy manner has numerous rooms, any of which could serve as a master.
In most homes, as Scorpius had come to understand it, attics were used for storage. However his mother placed all the remaining belongings of his grandparents in the attic and bolted the door closed. Astoria was notorious among the pureblood community for being a muggle-sympathizer. Unlike many of the other women married to one time deatheaters, she firmly believed in the equality of muggles as well as other magical creatures. This is one reason why they did not have a house elf to decorate the manor for the Christmas party.
Scorpius moved through the large storage room, scanning for plates and cups. In the far corner of the room he found a likely looking box. However, upon further inspection he found only spare linens. A trunk next to the box caught his eye. The trunk was dusty and appeared as though it had not been opened in some time. Curiosity overtook him and he threw the lid open.
He reached down and lifted one of his childhood toys out of the trunk. Scorpius instantly recognized the toy as one of his favorites, a light blue stuffed animal. “Puppy.” He thought to himself with a smile “Long time no see.”
“I remember that one.” Scorpius turned towards the door to face his father. “You carried it around for years. We had to fix it up so many times I’m surprised it is still in one piece.”
“Father, um I was…” Scorpius started nervously. “I was looking for the extra china.”
“I took it down yesterday.” He said looking at his son inquisitively.
“Oh okay then. Well, um, thank you.” Scorpius said quickly as he made his way towards the door.
“Scorpius, wait for a second.” Draco said placing a firm hand on his son’s shoulder. “Is there something going on? You have been acting quite odd since you’ve been home.”
“Uh no, Father, its just been a long semester. I’m happy to be home.” He was a bad liar, they both knew it.
“I see.” Draco said looking down at him with piercing silver eyes. “When you are ready to tell me what’s going on, just say the word. I’m here for you son.” Scorpius simply nodded and walked quickly from the room.
His stomach somersaulted. He was sure he would lose his dinner. Well the diner he had yesterday. His nerves had been too bad today to permit the eating of any portion of the meals his mother had prepared for them. His feet seemed to be made of led. He fought against himself every step he took towards the reading room. His father, when not at work advising the ministry on dangerous magical objects, made a predictable progression through the manor. It was four in the evening, he would be reading the most recent reports on enchanted objects. It was likely that his mother was also there, pouring over a new muggle novel of some type.
He rested his hand on the door knob. His heart beat wildly in his chest. This was it. Once he went through that door, there would be no coming back. “I don’t have to do this.” He thought to himself. But then his head filled with thoughts of Albus, and of the life they could share together, if only he could just do this one thing. He slowly exhaled, turned the door knob, and walked inside to face his father.
“Father.” Scorpius said as he approached the older blonde man who was looking over a paper. “May I speak with you?” Draco, with one eyebrow raised, motioned to the chair next to his own. Scorpius was thankful for the invitation, he was unsure if he could stand on his shaking legs much longer.
“I wanted to start by telling you that I mean no disrespect to you or to mother. I appreciate all that you have done for me. I know that you probably will be very displeased with me after I tell you what I am about to say. I just hope that-“
“Scorpius!” Draco interrupted sharply. “Say what you came here to say.”
“Father, I’m gay.”
Draco sat expressionless, looking at his son, saying nothing. Scorpius froze. He could do nothing but stare back at his father and wait for the man’s anger to erupt. ‘
At last Draco spoke. “Astoria. Come here.”
Scorpius turned his head towards the fire place. His mother stood up from one of the chairs which was faced towards the blaze. Scorpius was horrified, he had not noticed her there. She approached the area where her son and husband were sitting.
“Repeat what you just said to your mother.” Draco order, remaining expressionless.
“I’m gay.” He repeated quietly.
Draco bent forward to the table in front of him and poured a large drink into his glass. He looked up at his wife with an expression of defeat and handed her the glass. Scorpius did not understand the significance of the action whatsoever. Was his father giving his mother alcohol to lessen the pain of her son being a homosexual?
“You win Astoria.” Draco said to his wife with a small half smile. At this point, Scorpius was supremely confused. What had his mother won?
He watched as his mother slowly put down the drink and knelt before him on the soft carpet. She took his hands in her own and looked up at him sweetly. “We have been waiting so long for you to tell us.”
“What?!” Scorpius could hardly believe what he was hearing. He looked quickly to his father.
“We are your mother and father, Scorpius.” Draco said his face mirroring the warmth of his wife’s. “We have known for a long time now.”
Tears filled Scorpius’s eyes. They knew. They knew their only child was gay, and they were not angry with him. They still loved him. “Why did you not say something?”
“We wanted you to tell us when you were ready.” Astoria said as she reached up to wipe away his tears. “We wanted to give you the choice.”
“You are not disappointed?” He asked.
“No.” Draco said firmly. “You are smart and brave and kind. Everything I could not be at your age. I am exceedingly proud of you.”
“But I’m your only child.” Scorpius said guiltily. “Aren’t you sad that you won’t have any grandchildren. The Malfoy line will end with me.”
Draco let out an almost indignant chuckle and looked at his wife. “Don’t worry about that.”
Scorpius looked back at his mother. She removed one of her hands from his grip and placed it on her belly. Scorpius gasped. His mother was rounder than when he had last seen her. In his misery he had not even noticed. “Mother you’re-“
“Pregnant!” She said with a laugh. “I know! I was surprised as well.”
“We both were.” Said Draco somewhat seriously as he took the drink from the table. “Grape juice is completely unsatisfying.” He said with distain putting the glass back down.
The three Malfoys spent the rest of their evening in the reading room talking and laughing about the better parts of the past. Scorpius was the happiest he had ever been in the ancestral home. Too soon, nigh fell, and they retired to their rooms.
Scorpius wrote a letter to Albus, explaining all that had happened. He was beyond excited to share the news with his lover. He sealed the envelope with the Malfoy crest and placed it on his night stand. He would send it tomorrow, but for now he was worn out. He had to get some sleep before the party tomorrow, or he would be completely useless to his pregnant mother.
