CHAPTER TEN: Legilimency
"LEGILIMEN"
The word resounded in Severus's mind. He had not been ready. He wasn't prepared as the boy's spell hit him with a force that should not have been possible. Severus staggered back. He was falling, but in slow motion. Every moment exaggeratedly slow as his senses spilled outwards. Blurring and memories rose up one after the other.
The memories burned through him so fast he was left reeling. Dizzy and in pain. The pain built until it was blinding. Lily as a girl with him at home. His father's brutal beatings. His mother's cries. The letter telling him his mother had passed away in the night. The funeral where he stood alone weeping as they buried her. The first Death Eater meeting. The endless victims. Potter's tormenting at school. Being pushed by the gang into the lake. Nearly drowning. Lily trying to talk to him. Lily and him doing homework. Fear. Fear. Fear. Permeated everything. Hatred. So much anger and hatred. Swimming up from the depths of his past. The prophesy. Telling the Dark Lord. Begging for Lily's life. Facing Dumbledore. Being shattered by the loss of everything he knew. Alone. Lying alone on that stone floor.
Feeling as if he was about to be sick. The world was spinning away into memories. He could see the tears running down Harry's face. He could see Sirius's concerned features paling. He knew his own face had drained of blood. His stomach was churning and pain was blinding him. Agony he'd not felt in a long time. It compared nothing to the Cruciatus curse.
A single memory coalesced into existence. Solid amongst the kaleidoscope of memories swimming in his mind.
--
Severus was sitting against an oak reading his textbook. His eyes were focused on the potions book. The gang of Gryffindors came up to him. Potter and Sirius laughing. Jeering when they saw him.
"What you doing Snivelous. Already studying," Sirius leered at him.
--
The words slicing into Severus like a knife. The man felt the bile rising in his throat as the scene continued to play. So different was this young Sirius from the man he loved. The memory was so powerful it was blinding him. He wanted to scream, but it was all he could do to keep from throwing up.
--
"Put me down!" Severus screamed now dangling in the air. His humiliation building. He struggled against the spell that had him suspended.
"Why don't we see what's underneath all this disgraceful clothing," James sneered up at him. Severus struggled more. His body shaking. Anger and humiliation building to a whole new level.
"Let him go, you're such a bully James Potter. Leave him alone!" Lily cried running over. A single wand movement from James and his pants vanished. Leaving him in his underwear. His boxers. He turned a bright shade of red.
--
Severus screamed at himself not to say it. Not to say those words. No no no no no! But he did anyways. That one word echoed in his head. Even as another memory rushed upwards. Equally painful. Completing his guilt and his torment.
--
"I don't need your help! You filthy Mudblood. Just leave me alone!" Severus screamed. He couldn't bear to have Lily seem him like this. Weak. Humiliated. Embarassed. Without his trousers on. In nothing but his robe and boxers. His shirt falling over his burning face. His eyes still able to see. His ears still able to hear.
The jeering laughter. The hurt and anger on her face. Burning into him. As soon as he said the word he regretted it. He didn't think of her that way. He was just so angry. So embarrassed. His struggle renewed.
--
MUDBLOOD
The word resonated in Severus's mind. Even now. He screamed out. Bile filling his mouth even as the scream escaped his lips. Trying desperately to clamp his mouth shut before he was sick. He couldn't show such weakness. The next memory that flooded him stole that choice away.
--
He entered that room. Her body lying splayed out. Her perfect form on the ground. Her red hair pooling around him. The screams of her child matching his own heart ranching sobs. He fell to his knees by her side. Grabbing her body in his arms as he screamed out. Only now noticing the silent child watching him. He screamed in agony. Wailing out his grief as tears flowed down his face and he pressed her against him. Rocking back and forth ignoring the vibrant green gaze watching him.
--
Everything began to explode. The jars around the room shattering. The boy screamed and his wand flew away from Severus. Landing with a loud resounding clatter against the floor. The man himself hunched forwards on hand and knees. Finally time had resumed normally and he felt the full pain of impacting the floor.
He tried to breath slowly. Even then he knew he couldn't stop it. His stomach was rolling horribly. Bile was still flooding into his mouth and it didn't matter how much he swallowed. More came up. Retching he shook uncontrollably.
A door slammed loudly. He kept his eyes firmly closed. Breathing. That's all he could focus on. Every spasm of his body shaking him. Making him retch until there was nothing left to come back up.
He realized a hand rested lightly on his back. He flinched badly. His arms buckled and he would have fallen. Strong arms pulled him against a firm chest. He turned and pressed his face against the rough material of the robes. Inhaling the scent. A rich caramel and chocolate that always went to his head. Sirius. He shook as the sobs came. Arms encircled him. Holding him as he cried out his pain. Footsteps sounded outside the door. He could hear voice. He didn't know what was going on. He felt sick. He felt in agony. Everything burned. His heart was beating so fast he wasn't able to breath. He knew he needed to calm down. The buzzing in his head was growing louder. He panted from breath. Then darkness took him and he went completely limp.
"Severus. Sev. Breath. DAMN IT!" Sirius was saying. Whispered words as the man in his arms was panting. His breathing growing more and more ragged. Sirius could feel the pounding of his heart. He knew Severus couldn't hear him. Panic was growing even more inside Sirius when the door opened. Harry ran inside followed by Minerva and Albus. Severus went completely limp in his arms and Sirius screamed. "NO NO NO NO! SEV WAKE UP. WAKE UP DAMN IT! SEV WAKE UP! WAKE. THE. FUCK. UP! SEVERUS!"
"Sirius stop screaming," Minerva said gently laying her hand against his arm. Gently drawing his attention to her. Tears were openly running down Sirius's face. His body was trembling and he was holding Severus tightly to himself.
"Harry told us what happened Sirius, you need to lie him down so I can take a look at him," Albus said gently. A wave of his wand vanished the mess on the office floor. Another wave repaired the jars and sent the office back in order. Everyone knew how Severus hatted messes. He'd not enjoy seeing the destruction of his office.
Sirius hesitated. Before slowly lowering his partner to the floor. His hand refused to leave Severus though. One gripped his tightly while the other ran through his hair. Minerva was still kneeling next to Sirius. Her hand comforting him on his shoulder. Harry stood awkwardly looking between the two man.
Albus knelt on Severus's other side. He waved his wand over Severus's prone from mumbling words to himself as he did. His eyes growing wide and concerned.
"What did you do Harry?" Albus asked looking at the boy in question. "Tell me everything. Exactly how it happened."
"Sirius told me about them. I was angry. Snape asked me if I wanted to cancel Occlumency lessons today. I was really angry. I yelled at them. Said some really mean things. I refused to cancel Occlumency though. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction. When he cast his spell, I did the same thing. Only I put all my anger at what they had done into the spell and I don't know what happened. I saw so many things. I don't even know what I saw really. And then everything sort of exploded..." Harry trailed off. He really didn't know what had happened.
"It's as I feared," Albus said sadly. His hand coming to rest on Severus's shoulder.
"What Albus? Tell me, I need to know!" Sirius demanded. Now getting angry.
"Harry may have cast the spell Sirius, but it was Voldemort's power that invaded Severus's mind. Combined with Severus's own powerful spell. It was as though he was hit by three wizards with the same spell," Albus attempted to explain.
"You mean I let Vol-Voldemort into his mind?" Harry whispered in shock.
"Yes. It is not your fault, I had fear this would happen," Albus whispered softly. "It is why I had not wanted to teach you Occlumency myself."
"You KNEW?" Sirius demanded. Glaring at the man. If he hadn't been so concerned with holding Severus in his arms. Gently running his hand through his hair. He couldn't bring himself to even move enough to express his anger and displeasure at the man.
"No Sirius. I knew it was a risk. I didn't know it would happen with Severus. That is irrelevant now. We need to wake him. We need to know what he revealed," Albus said gently.
"It's not irrelevant--" Sirius began only to be cut off by Minerva.
"You will NOT interrogate him after this!" Minerva growled at Albus. Annoyance and anger clearly visible in her features.
"I do not have a choice Minerva, we must know how much he managed to learn!" Albus retorted.
"No-nothing," Severus's soft voice whispered. Causing silence to fall. He whispered out softly, "he al-alrea-already kne-new about Li-Lily."
"Shh love, don't talk. Just rest," Sirius said gently. Noting how pale Severus looked. His eyes were unfocused. His lips trembled. His teeth were chattering causing the stuttering in his words. He was shivering violently.
"What did he see Severus," Albus demanded.
"ALBUS!" Minerva chastised.
"S'okay," Severus breathed.
"No it ruddy well is not! Albus leave him alone. Or so help me!" Sirius began.
"He ne-needs to kn-know," Severus breathed. He hissed in pain and pressed his hand to his head. His breathing becoming laboured once more.
"Not now. You need to rest," Sirius continued.
"Do it," Severus breathed out cold and demanding. His eyes focusing on Albus for a moment. Clear what he wanted the other to do. Albus sighed and pointed his wand at Severus. Three sharp screams of NO didn't stop him. He whispered the spell and Severus's screams filled the room. Minerva had to grab Sirius to stop him from attack Albus. Harry was pressed against the wall his eyes wide with fear. He was screaming for them to stop.
Long moments of screaming later and total silence fell over the office. Severus was unconscious once more. Tears were falling down Sirius's and Minerva's faces. Harry was panting and glaring at the Headmaster. He was the first to break the silence.
"Why did you torture him? He didn't do anything!" Harry babbled. Tears beginning to fall. He walked slowly. Until he stood next to Sirius. Sirius grabbed him. Pulling the boy into his arms. Where he lay crying openly. Clinging to Sirius. Who was still holding tight to Severus's hand.
"I didn't torture him Harry, I had to see what Voldemort had discovered. I used a legilimency spell on Severus. It hurt him, because his mind is very weak right now. His defences are no longer in place. I had to force him to show me what Voldemort had seen. Severus had no focus. It is always painful when someone else forces your mind to expose it's memories. As you well know," Albus explained gently. Harry nodded.
"It was cruel Albus," Minerva chastised harshly.
"It was necessary, you know it," Albus said. Though as his eyes met the others it was clear he felt pain over what he'd done. There was worry and remorse in his gaze.
"Did you learn what you needed to?" Minerva asked.
"He revealed nothing. Somehow he kept those memories hidden. Shielded. So Voldemort tortured him with all the things he'd been forced to do as a Death Eater, his father's less then appropriate treatment of him. His mother's death. Everything that happened at Hogwarts and your mother's death," Albus told Harry knowing the boy had seen these things too. Harry looked up at the old man tiredly. Sad eyes filled with tears.
"I wish I had just said I didn't want to do Occlumency lessons tonight. I didn't want to hurt him like this. I was just so angry," Harry whispered.
"He'll forgive you Harry," Sirius said gently. "You have no idea what kind of man he is. He hides himself very well. Even from us."
"I still can't believe half what you've told me Sirius," Minerva whispered. "The things you've revealed and the man I know. It just doesn't make sense."
"He did what he had to do to survive," Sirius said. His hand squeezing his partners. How he wished he could make this all go away.
"He will need time to heal Sirius, the damage this did will take a physical tole on him. As well as the mental and emotional one. I'm afraid he is in no condition to remain here and teach," Albus said very gently. "I will get Slughorn to fill his place as Head of Slytherin house and as Potions Professor while Severus recovers."
"I don't think he should leave the wards Albus," Minerva said. "The wards around Hogwarts will offer much more protection then even Headquarters and less chances of anyone else stumbling upon him like this."
"I agree. He needs to remain here, but he will not agree to being locked in the Hospital Wing. I will need someone to remain in his quarters with him. I can reinforce the wards around the entrances to his private quarters," Albus agreed with Minerva.
"I will stay," Sirius said without hesitation. There was no way he would leave.
"I was hopping you would Sirius," Minerva said. Giving him a warm smile. Albus's eyes twinkled merrily as he smiled at Sirius.
"Can I come visit?" Harry asked in such a small voice.
"Of course, just give me a few days to get him settled. He will not like to be seen weak as he is now," Sirius said gently. Giving Harry a hug.
"I'll take Harry back to Gryffindor Tower. Albus, Sirius. Goodnight," Minerva said rising. She held out her hand to pull Harry to his feet. Harry said his goodbey. Before allowing Minerva to usher him from the room. Albus rose to his feet.
"I must go make preparations. I will be back tomorrow morning to check on you both," Albus said. Bidding them goodnight before leaving Sirius with Severus's unconscious form. Sirius lifted Severus into his arms. Walked to the picture of Salazar Slytherin who glared after Albus. Barely had time to open his mouth before the picture slid and revealed the hidden door. No doubt the Slytherin founder had no intention of making Sirius wait to enter Severus's room and get the man to his bed. Sirius found Severus to be rather hard to carry. He was heavy.
Laying Severus down on the bed. Running his fingers through the man's hair Sirius found himself thinking about the first night he'd come here. Just last night. They had shared this bed. They had made love to one another. Falling asleep entwined in the early hours of the morning. Watching Severus get ready for work the next day. It had felt so domestic and surreal to Sirius. It had driven home how close they had come. That Severus would leave him here alone all day in his private rooms. With access to everything. Giving him permission to make himself at home. It had show Sirius the true depth of their love.
