Hermione made her way to her dorm for the first time since everything happened. She wanted to get things over with, pack her things. All the students had spent the past night in the great hall together. But she didn’t get much sleep. She felt empty, as if a part of her had been ripped away. She cursed herself for giving a part of her to someone who had never given her any part of him. She was alone in the dorm, the other students were still having breakfast or waking up. The dorms looked the same as they did before, as if nothing had happened. Hermione sat down on her bed and started packing her things, just numbly throwing them into her trunk. She paused for a moment and looked at the view outside her window, painfully reminded of when Draco was hovering there. She opened the window and sat on the windowsill. Her legs dangling over the roof. It was a long way down, but she didn’t mind anymore. She felt numb, like she couldn’t wrap her mind around what had happened. She closed her eyes and a gush of wind blazed through her hair. Hermione slowly opened her eyes when she felt something land in her lap. She looked at the beautiful black origami Pegasus and immediately knew who had sent it. There was only one person capable of forming such beautiful creatures. The Pegasus flapped its wings and a note in the form of a feather fell into her hand. It was a black note and the ink was golden. She sighed and held the note in her hand. Her mind was yelling at her to destroy it, and the Pegasus with it. But her heart had a different plan. Hermione let her eyes glide over the letters on the paper.
The love that we will never have together is the most beautiful, the most violent, the most pure, the most heady.
D.M
Hermione read over the sentence again and again. It hit her like a thousand knives all at once. She felt her heart hurt more with each word and each breath. It was a beautiful sentence, so simple, yet so meaningful. Last time, the dragon had destroyed the note, so Hermione placed her hands flatly over it, protecting it. But the Pegasus didn’t destroy the note, it simply whinnied one time before freezing. If there was ever an impossible love, this would be it.
Hermione was standing next to her two best friends. “What are you talking about, Harry?” she asked him, shooting him a worried look. “I have to finish what Dumbledore started, I need to leave” he whispered, sounding determined. “You’re leaving to go where exactly?” Ron asked. “I don’t know yet, but I’ll let you guys know as often as I can” he said. Hermione shook her head. “No, you won’t, we’re going with you” she said. “You can’t, it’s too dangerous” he said. “I don’t want you to risk your lives for me”. “Honestly, Harry, we love you and all, but it’s not just for you. It’s for everyone” she said. “We’re in this together” Ron whispered. His hand resting on Harry’s shoulder. Harry sighed before he nodded. “We need to prepare. I want to leave in a week” he stated. They all agreed.
It had been weeks already. They had been camping all over the country, in the most secluded of places. Hermione tried to wrap her head around everything that had happened. They had found one horcrux, but at what cost. She walked over to Ron. He was lying in bed, his chest bare and his arm was still looking dreadful. Hermione sat down next to him and she took his arm in her lap. He flinched as she dropped some potion on them. “I’m sorry” she whispered. He nodded in understanding. The wounds were closed, leaving red scars over Ron’s arm. He was still in a lot of pain. Ron’s hand took hers and he looked at her. Hermione smiled at him a little bit. With his other hand, he pushed a strand of her hair from her face. Hermione felt a single tear run down her cheek and Ron caught it with his thumb. Brushing he face ever so slightly. She leaned into his hand, closing her eyes. Ron pulled her into his arms and she let her head rest against his chest. His hands slowly running through her hair. Hermione listened to the sound of his heart beating, rhythmic and calming. Before long, she felt her eyes close and she drifted off into her dream world.
Hermione was standing in front of the Gazebo, it looked beautiful as ever. The wisteria plant in bloom and the moon full. She heard a noise behind her and turned her head. She looked at the boy emerging from the forest, his smile so bright. She called his name and he walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her. Hermione broke away from him and pressed a kiss on his lips, sliding her hands into his hair. He grabbed her waist and deepened the kiss. As they broke away from each other, she let her forehead lean against his. They were both panting. “I love you, Draco Malfoy” she whispered. But as soon as the words had left her lips, she saw his smile disappear. His eyes grew dark and so did the space around her. She turned to look at the Gazebo. It was on fire, the wisteria slowly burning to ashes. The moon had disappeared and Hermione felt Draco letting go of her hand. She yelled his name as she saw him disappear into the darkness before a green flash of light appeared. His limp body laying amongst the ashes of their gazebo.
