The hallways of Malfoy Inc. were wide, empty and cold as Hermione walked quickly from her office to the one that father and son shared. Her heels clicked in the manner that drove Lucius insane, she was wearing all black as she had been since she’d come back from New York. Much to her surprise Tony had called Lucius through the Floo Network and told him that while he was unable to work with them right then, he was interested in working with them later in the year. Lucius and Draco were very much excited for that union and they were both very happy with her ability to convince Stark to join them. Hermione sighed and pushed the door open to Draco and Lucius’s office and walked in but while they were sitting there so wasn’t Narcissa Malfoy.
“What’s this?” She asked as she sat down looking at them all “I was busy…”
“We want to know what’s going on with you” Lucius said “It’s nearly February and you’ve been quiet and…different, what happened in New York?”
“Did they harm you?” Draco asked “Did Stark…force himself on you?”
“No” Hermione rolled her eyes “Nothing happened, okay?” Shaking her head she stood up “Can I go?”
“Hermione” Narcissa stood up and reached out towards the younger woman “Lucius and Draco are really worried about you. They told me that you’ve not gone out to lunch with them since coming home, that you come in on time and leave an exact eight hours later and that during meetings its like you’re not there”
“I’m just stressed!” Hermione snapped at them “I am the one who went to New York to convince Stark to work with us, I’m the one who left my friends behind during the bloody Christmas holidays!” She looked from one surprised face to the other “Do you appreciate me or my work at all?”
“If we didn’t…” Draco started but Lucius put his hand on his forearm and stood up clearing his throat.
“Miss Granger” Lucius said as he walked towards the large window that looked over muggle London and watched muggles run about doing their mundane daily chores “We care about the business. While you are a part of the business you are not the only one, you don’t see Draco bringing his problems here and whining about them, do you?” He didn’t wait for an answer “We all have problems we must deal with…this is why my father always said that women in the business world never work out, you’re all too emotional” He turned his head and offered a small, cold smile that Hermione was sure he meant to be kind but fell far from it “Be that as it may. I have decided that you’ve done well, you have proven how driven and convincing you can be…that you’re willing to go above and beyond” Here he gave a wry smile “To get the job done”
“I don’t understand what…” Hermione started.
“I think it would be good to have you and Draco announce your engagement” Lucius said and though Hermione knew that Naricssa knew the plan beforehand she still saw her gasp and put her hand over her mouth “You announce it now and by September you two can be married, you’ll honeymoon in Aruba and when you come home you can set up home at Malfoy manor while he works with Stark Industries”
“And then what?” Hermione asked, her eyes were a little glassy as she focused them on the tall, blonde haired man “What comes after that?”
“Children, of course” Lucius answered her like she was stupid “He continues to rule the business world. You make the manor nice and homey for him and then you’ll have a child to take up your time”
“But I wanted to be a part of the business venture with Stark Industries” Hermione told him “That was the plan” As much as she hated to admit it, she could feel emotion clogging her throat and there were tears threatening to burn right through her eyelids.
“I said that if you got Stark on-board then you and Draco could get married” Lucius said with a smirk “You’re smart Miss Granger, but you should leave the business world to the business men an take your spot in the natural order of the world…a wife, mother and mistress of the home, there’s nothing wrong with it”
“I know there’s nothing wrong with it!” Hermione snapped, her tone was nearing a barely contained, half-insane shriek but she managed to keep it inside her “It’s a wonderful thing to do for someone who wants to do it…but I don’t…”
“You’d be married to the most eligible bachelor in the wizarding world!” Lucius snarled, honestly upset by her obvious distaste at the world he was presenting her with. Most women would give their eye-teeth to be the next ‘Mrs. Malfoy’ and she was scoffing at it.
“Hermione” Narcissa said “This is an awful lot to take in all at once” She looked at her husband “Perhaps you should go back to your office and throw yourself back in to your work. There is no need to give an answer to this life changing question right on the spot…get back to work, go home, have some wine, talk about it to those who matter most to you and answer only when you’re ready”

Even though she’d been back to her office for about an hour, Hermione couldn’t concentrate on the memos before her, she couldn’t think of anything other than the future Lucius had planned out for her. It would be so easy to give in to that life, to allow herself to just fall backwards and know that there was a plush, finely made pillow of goose-feathers and silk there to catch her. To be Mrs. Malfoy and put on elaborate balls and parties to show off their amazing lifestyle. To give Draco a son, watch it be raised the same way as he had…to live in a lonely manor home. Constantly wondering when Draco will be home, if he’s coming home, who he’s out with, if she’s prettier, what if he wants to divorce her? There will be nothing for her, she’d read about the kinds of contracts pureblooded families signed…she’d have nothing but her name.
Hermione threw the file in her hands back on to the desk with an irritated sigh. She closed her eyes and pictured Tony laughing at her stupid and overly intelligent jokes, how he tried so hard, sometimes too hard, to make her laugh, how he explained things she didn’t understand, how he tried so hard to help everyone around him. She knew he did that so he wouldn’t have to focus on his own problems and the issues that plagued him, Hermione snorted to herself, she’d always been attracted to guys that needed some sort of emotional support…never the normal ones.
Her eyes snapped open and looked around the empty office space. Hermione’s mouth dropped open and she wondered if maybe Draco was the “normal” guy she’d been waiting for, he was fucked up, that was for sure and he was a daddy’s boy in the extreme. But what if what was considered normal was actually boring for her? What if she needed a man like Stark, someone who was both clinical and passionate, strong and weak, independent and needy…but if that was true then why was she even considering on marrying Draco Malfoy? It was simple, it was because it was the easiest choice to be made, since the war she’d been searching for something easy, something that just fell in to place with very little help from her. Even as she thought about what it was that she wanted she knew that she could marry Draco and become the lady of Malfoy manor and then she’d never have to have a hard life again. But the part of her that went on all of her adventures with Harry, that had fought countless death eaters and lived in a tent for a year didn’t want to go the easy route. That part wanted the unknown and that was what Tony had been offering her, it could last years or merely weeks but it was something that he was offering her.
Hermione’s eyes widened and with a small yelp she stood up. She gathered all of her personal stuff and put it in a box that she conjured, her picture frames, her personal logs and diaries, her jogging sneakers, hair ties, nail polish and everything else that was personal to her. Every move she made seemed to constrict her chest a little more and made it more and more difficult to breathe. It was a representation of how her life felt at that moment in that office, the same office she’d been in for years. She wrote a quick note and sent it through the fireplace before she walked out of the small, enclosed box of a room. She walked down the hallway once again, hearing her heels click loudly before realizing that the clicking was becoming faster and faster. By the time the note made its way in to the hands of Draco Malfoy, which he showed to his father, Hermione Granger was running as fast as she could through the entrance hall.
“Hermione!” Draco called, he was standing on the main stairs with his father behind him “Please…”
“Miss Granger” Lucius called out to her, everyone was pretending not to listen to the conversation “I won’t offer you another job and the marriage…it’ll never happen if you leave here right now”
“Draco” Hermione looked at him “Don’t let him treat you like you’re breeding stock to be sold to the highest bidder…you’re better than that and always have been” Her golden eyes moved to the older Malfoy “Lucius, someday I will be a wife, mother and the mistress of my own home and I will be my husbands equal in all things including business” She glared at him “I feel that I’m going to see you again” With that Hermione turned and went through the Floo network back to her apartment feeling better than she had in ages.
