Disclaimer: THIS IS PURELY A WORK OF FANFICTION. I IN NO WAY MAKE ANY MONEY OR PROFIT FROM THESE WRITINGS. I HAVE MERELY BORROWED THESE WONDERFUL SETTINGS AND CHARACTERS FROM J.K ROWLING (HARRY POTTER), GLEN A LARSON (BSG), AND J.R.R. TOLKIEN (LOTR). |
Roark turned at the obviously soft spoken voice so as not to startle him, his smile widening as he thought that Jolly must have heard about what happened to those who startled him and Harry. Not that he would have startled him, as he had sensed him coming up behind him.
"Good evening to you, Flight Sergeant Jolly."
"May I be so bold as to ask what had you smiling like that?"
Jolly, Roark thought, was one of the few warriors he had met that was not in tip-top shape. He was, in fact, a bit overweight for his five nine height, his hair a sandy brown color and already thinning. He had bright blue eyes that often were full of mirth. He was one of the few that had accepted Roark and Harry with no trouble.
"Oh, it's nothing much, really, just thinking about how much I love being on the Galactica, and out there," he waved toward the launch tubes, "flying patrols, and the work I'm doing here."
"There is a look of sadness there too. Anything I can help with?"
He shook his head. "No, Jolly. I was just thinking about how much I miss my husband. Miss being in his arms. We've been separated before, but we weren't bonded then, nor were we sealed."
A nod. "I'm sure. It can't be easy to be separated from him when you are so newly bonded. I miss my wife, and our sons and daughters."
"How long have you been married, Jolly?" he asked as they turned to begin walking through the bay back toward the lift. "How many children?"
Jolly smiled. "Sixteen years, and we have four. Our eldest, our daughter, Ekaterina is fourteen, our next, a son we named Oren, is twelve, our son Nathan is nine, and our daughter Alexandria is six." He looked over at him, his blue eyes considering. "May I ask you something?"
"You're wondering how my family, either of them, would allow Harry and I to marry and seal ourselves to the two deadliest Terminators known today?"
A start of surprise as his eyes widened. Roark couldn't help but laugh. "Sorry, Jolly. Receptive empath and telepath. It's easy for me to pick up on surface, or broad sent thoughts."
"Was I really thinking that loudly, Roark?" he asked, saw him nod. "Sorry about that. I'll try to be more careful in the future."
He shook his head. "Don't worry about it too much, Jolly. It happens more frequently than anyone realizes. Most of the time it isn't a problem, but my shields are a bit thin, and I'm picking up on more than I should be. It's part of the reason I came down here."
"I'll still try to guard my thoughts better, especially as I know you are not the only powerful empath OR telepath on board. As for yours and Harry's sealings to the Lestrange brothers..." a pause, then... "There has to be more there than meets the eye, as well as more to the story than what has been told. Your family...the Durin's that is, are known to be notoriously protective--"
Roark let loose a bark of laughter, interrupting him. "THAT, Jolly, would be more than a bit of an understatement. There is, after all, the Durin famous family motto. Family first. Always."
Jolly chuckled as he nodded. "Then of course there is the Commander. Anyone that knows any of them, knows they would have put a stop to the sealing in a heartbeat if Rodolphus and Rabastan really WERE as bad as they are rumored to be."
A smirk. "Oh, trust me when I say they ARE as bad as everyone thinks, and also, absolutely true, that the Admiral and grandfather would have stopped us cold from sealing to them if there wasn't another part to the story. Unfortunately, it's the part I'm not at liberty to discuss."
"Because yours and Harry's husbands are undercover Counter-Intelligence Officers, and as such, their identities have yet to be released."
Roark stopped walking as they reached the lift. "Exactly so, and as you have guessed that much about Rodolphus and Rabastan, I should probably warn you to expect a visit from either Colonel Alexei or Lt. Colonel Aiden," a smile, "if not both of them."
"To give me a warning not to discuss, or to speak to anyone about what I may, or may not know," he said as he stopped beside him.
Looking at him closely, Jolly began to notice just how pale, how...stressed Roark looked. He also saw a tenseness about him that had not been there when he first came on board. "You're looking a bit strained, Roark. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Jolly, thanks for asking." He stepped onto the lift, Jolly following him.
"You'll be seeing him as soon as we get home from this Conference."
"IF we get home," came so softly it was obviously said with the hope of not being heard.
Only it HAD been heard. "That was a cryptic comment if ever I've heard one," as the lift came to a stop and they stepped off of it.
"Ah...well then," he said as they entered the corridor. "I had best get myself back to my quarters and into bed for some much needed sleep, especially before I say something else I probably shouldn't. Good night, Jolly."
"Good night, Roark."
Jolly watched him walk away, a frown curving his brow. There was something wrong, he thought, something he couldn't quite put a finger to. He liked Harry and Roark, as did all of Blue Squadron, and Red was beginning to come around, as were Green and Yellow. Silver...well, Silver Squadron was made up entirely of Counter-Intelligence, and THAT team protected their own.
Much as they all did.
"Perhaps," he said to the empty corridor, "it's time for a bit of strategic interference." That decision made, he turned the other way and headed immediately toward the Officer's Club, where he knew any off-duty Durin was likely to be.
