It was barely a secton {week} later. Rodolpus had spent much of the secton {week}, between the jobs Riddle had them doing looking for the family box. Riddle had been angered when his two bed bugs had gone missing, and when asked, the Lestrange brothers had shrugged and told him they had parted ways after delivering their warning. They had not seen either Roderick or Maurice since.
"So you have no idea what happened to them?" they had been asked.
"Tom," Rodolphus had begun, "they left us shortly after we left the Peverell Potter's apartment. They SAID they were returning here, to tell you what had happened."
Tom had nodded. "Find them," he ordered the brothers.
They had nodded. Now, Rodolphus sat in the middle of his bed, staring down at the black box, with its intricately designed Lestrange Family coat of arms, an ivory inlaid lid. He had finally found the box, in the one place he had not expected it to be.
The place where his parents had been entombed after their deaths. He guessed he should have thought of that, but he had not. He had gone to their resting place just on the off chance he may find a clue. It was as he was reading the plate, containing their names, date of birth, and date of death, above where their bodies were. that he had noticed something...off.
Reaching out, he had run his fingers over the gold plates embedded into the stone wall. The one above his mother, when he touched the Crest of her ancient family line of Rosier, made a grating sound and slid aside. Inside had been the ten-by-ten ornate family box.
Pulling it from its resting place, he had turned and hurried home to place it on his bed, then took a seat with his back to the headboard, staring at it. Wanting to know what, exactly, was in the box, he reached out and keyed in the security code on the small pad on the front of the box.
The lid clicked. Reaching out now, he lifted it, let it fall back. Inside he found several necklaces, two of which were of an intricate lattice wire work in both silver and gold with small circular disks hanging from some of the links, each bearing the Crest of the ancient Kobalian Noble Family of Lestrange.
The necklaces could be worn one of two ways. One way was to accentuate formal evening wear for any number of social functions. The other way was as part of the Colonial Warrior's dress uniform. There were also several necklaces, bracelets, armlets and rings. The armlets and rings came in pairs, which meant they could be used as bonding, or as marriage sealing bands.
One such set, an armlet set, was made of an intricate design in gold wire, with precious stones of a deep emerald embedded on the wire at select places. There was a set of rings, men's and women's to match. There were also sets with rubies, sapphires, amethyst, aquamarine, and the final stone was a beautiful multi-colored opal.
Each set of either gold, silver, titanium, or platinum, and by the looks of them, had been made a very long time ago by the best of Kobalian jewelers.
Pulling out the tray that held the jewelry, he found a second tray containing holographic photos, a few of his father, his mother, and of his parents together, at their marriage ceremony, of his mother looking tired but very happy as she held him and Rabastan after they had been born, and to his shock, his father had even been smiling.
In all of the holographs, his father had been dressed as the aristocracy of an ancient Kobalian family, and he remembered his father always dressing as such, being very sure everyone knew that he came from one of the oldest of families...that their bloodlines were one of the few that were still pure.
He also found in the box, pictures of his grandfather with two handsome, smiling young men on either side of him. By the looks of them, they must be his brothers, neither of whom Rodolphus ever remembered meeting. There were also holographs of two stunningly beautiful young women, both looking very much like him and Rabastan.
They were very nearly identical, except that one had deep, dark laughing brown eyes, while the other...Rodolphus' eyes went wide. The other had eyes the exact same color as Roark's, a startling bright silver that sparkled with happiness.
This then, must be Roark's mother. There were other holographs of the two, but there was one...it was of the brown-eyed girl. She was holding an infant of only a few days old. Her eyes held great sadness...horror too. He realized his parents had been dead a long time when these were taken, which meant she had to have known where the Lestrange Family box had been kept.
She also had to have been the one who moved it, but why she had felt the need to do so was still a mystery. At the bottom of the tray, he found a bundle of letters, held together with a purple satin ribbon. There were also two sealed envelopes that contained his and Rabastan's names on them, a third sealed envelope had Roark's name in handwriting he didn't recognize. Just as the second one had the same handwriting as the one with Roark's name on it.
Looking between the holographs of the two girls, the tied bundle of letters, and the two sealed envelopes...a feeling of dread began to work its way through him. It was beginning to look like Roark was a Lestrange. Picking up the sealed letter with his and Rabastan's name on it, he opened it, spilling its contents into his lap.
There were a few more photos and a letter. Picking up the letter, he opened it. 'My dearest sons,' he began, then stopped when he heard the door open. He looked up quickly, one of his small knives in his fingers ready to throw, only to see it was Rabastan.
NOT Bella, thank the Gods.
"You found it," was all he said.
He nodded, holding up the letter in his hand. "Mother. She wrote to us. There are also several holographs from their marriage ceremony, throughout the early yahrens {years}, of when we were born. There are also a few photos of two young women I don't recognize, but one of them looks amazingly like Roark. Come take a look at these as I read this out loud."
Rabastan crossed the room to take a seat on the bed beside his brother, taking all the holographs he was handed. Then, as he began to look through them, Rodolphus began to read.
"My dearest sons, as I lay here in my bed, writing this letter to you, I know that there is little hope I will survive the injuries I sustained in the Cylon raid that killed your father. It is, I think, with Corvus now dead and unable to stop me, that you heard the truth. The two young ladies you see in these holographs are the daughters of Reginald Lestrange, who was your grandfather's younger brother, and who was disowned for marrying beneath the family standards to keep the bloodline pure. Their names are Leta and Selina Lestrange.
"Yes, my beloved sons, you read that right. These two are your cousins. There is really very little I can tell you of Reginald, your grandfather's brother, as I did not know him very well. I had very little contact with him as he had been disowned for marrying a beautiful young woman he fell in love with...a woman that did not meet Lestrange family standards. Reginald was twenty when your father and I were married, and they left Aquaria shortly after, not to be seen or heard from again.
"When I learned these twin girls were born to Reginald and his wife, I secretly contacted them on Leo, wanting to get to know them. We began to exchange letters, keeping it a secret from your father, because he would have demanded that I stop at once. The holographs of the girls as they grew up were sent over the few yahrens {years} we wrote.
"My darling boys, I beg you, once you collect this box, go to Leo, find the girls. I know you will both love them as much as I do. They really are very sweet girls, and they would be pleased to finally get to meet you, as I have written them both about the two of you. Please, Rodolphus, Rabastan, do not let your father's pureblood ravings keep you from the only family you have left. Your loving mother, Calandra Rosier-Lestrange."
