Epilogue
Severus looked into the brown eyes of his wife and remembered their life together. In the years since her hair had grayed and wrinkles had began to appear. But to him she was still the beautiful woman he had married.
Hermione ran her fingers through Severus’ white hair as her tears continued to fall, “I don’t want you to leave me Severus. You can’t leave me.”
“It’s not an end Hermione. Just another beginning.” He smiled at her, his eyes tired.
“I’m not ready for a new beginning. Our story still has so much left to it.”
He wiped away her tears and whispered, “Yes my love it does. But I’m afraid that it is my time to start a new chapter and yours to finish this one.”
Hermione’s tears continued to fall as she bent forward and kissed her husband. She pulled Severus against her and kissed him fiercely, willing him to stay with her. She felt his hands loosen and finally fall away. She lay her head on his chest and sobbed long into the night.

Harry sat at the fresh grave. Silent tears spilled from his eyes.
“I never told you this,” he said quietly, “And I wish I had when you were still here. You were the best father I could have asked for. I only wish you had raised me dad. I will miss you. And I will take care of Hermione. She misses you desperately.”
Harry lay a single black rose on the grave and left. He never saw Sirius and Severus sitting on the hill watching him.
“You were right Severus. He has grown into an exceptional man.” Sirius said quietly.
“Yes, I am very proud of him. He comes from good people. Even his godfather wasn’t half bad.”
Sirius smirked, “Careful Sev, I’ll think you care.”
“Hardly.”

Hogwarts grieved the loss of their Headmaster and as was his last wish his portrait was hung in the second floor corridor. For weeks the painted Severus consoled his students over their loss and watched them continue their lives. For years to come people talked of the unlikely man who had made a great headmaster. Too soon his portrait was joined by that of his wife. Many students found their Headmaster, Harry Potter, sitting in front of the painting reminiscing the good times. When Harry’s time came he moved all the paintings of past Headmasters to the second floor corridor so that the students could benefit from their guidance. And he took his place with them.
Their chapter closed in sadness as those who loved them watched them each depart. The tears of many had been shed at the death of two of the greatest Headmaster’s Hogwarts had ever seen. Their pain was echoed in the pain of the past, and the pain still to come. Life begins in pain. It ends in pain. But it can be judged by it’s events. And if asked Severus would say that the life of this Potions Master had been one of great joy. Joy made all the richer by his pains.
The end
A/N: Well that’s it. I hope you have all enjoyed reading this little story. I’d like to thank all those who were kind enough to review. Your words were an inspiration when I thought I had lost my muse. And to all those who review later many thanks. I can not tell you how much joy they will bring me in the time to come. They will help guild my quill as I set of writing new adventures for our favorite couple.
