Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 11 Search for a Grimorie
"Mmm. Good morning Love." Hermione found herself wrapped tightly around a very warm, comforting body. She realized long ago that she could be perfectly content wasting the day away in bed next to Severus. He held her tighter and placed a soft kiss to the top of her head. He loved the way she smelled, and he loved the way he always woke up either in her arms, or her in his. Never once had they slept not curled up against the other. He took a few moments to really look at her stomach. It was getting bigger and even though he'd only been away for less than a week, he had noticed a change. He made a mental note to ask Poppy if it was normal to see such a difference in a week, before saying anything to Hermione.
Unfortunately for her, she realized she hadn't eaten anything the prior evening for dinner, and felt very nauseous. With lightning speed, she made it to the bathroom, and tried to empty an already barren stomach. Severus ran to the bathroom, to find her sitting on the floor, head buried in the toilet. He got her a cool cloth, and pulled her hair from her face. Placing the wash cloth on her forehead, he asked her if she was all right.
"You're very pale. I know morning sickness is normal, but are you okay?" Hermione let out a soft chuckle.
"I'll be fine Severus. I should have eaten dinner last night. It's okay. Really."
"My Gods! I completely forgot about eating dinner. I was so wrapped up in you and the way you were seducing me that I forgot you'd not eaten. From now on, there will be no excursions until you've eaten all three meals. And two snacks, not to forget about your favorite ice cream. What is that again— Chocolate Peanut Butter?" Hermione wasn't a bit surprised at his concern for her, correction, their child.
"Severus, I have no desire to get as round as Sprout. However, I promise to eat all three meals, and one snack. Preferably the ice cream." She felt warm inside when she thought about this baby meaning as much to him as it did to her. Ten years ago, she would have cringed at the idea of someone bearing Snape's child. Let alone herself.
Severus asked her to cover his first class of the morning so that he could prepare to leave with Sirius. After their lovemaking the night before, he told her about the Grimorie and she was just as excited as him. He had a meeting with Albus, Sirius, and Remus, and she told him she'd cover for him.
After her class, she met Severus in the infirmary for her check-up with Poppy. She was a little over four months now, and was going to hear the heartbeat for the first time. Poppy had her undress, then placed a Sonorus spell on her wand. She searched for a few minutes and only found the placenta. Severus was getting worried and Poppy told him to calm down. Just below her navel she found the erratic heartbeat. Hermione cried as she heard her baby, and Severus placed a loving kiss on her forehead. Poppy told her she was doing fine and that the baby was in perfect health.
Hermione had been reading and discovered a book called: "The Squibs Guide to Enchanted Pregnancy." Severus laughed at the title, but while he had been gone, she read the entire book learning all that she could about being pregnant. They were determined to learn everything possible about their baby so they could be prepared for anything. Hermione had read about a spell you could cast over your stomach to determine the sex of the child. She told Severus she had no desire to learn the sex of their child until it was born. He agreed that it should be left to the fates.
Poppy was a bit concerned that Hermione had already gained sixteen pounds, but told her it was normal to gain a few more pounds with your first child than with other pregnancies. After she promised she would take care of herself and would watch being on her feet, Poppy let them leave. Albus met them in the hallway and escorted them to an impromptu birthday party for Sirius. It was being held in the staff room and only a few people were there. Harry and Ginny of course were there, along with Remus, Sirius, a few professors, and Minerva.
Once inside, Remus handed Sirius his presents that they bought while in Hogsmeade. He was sincerely touched by the pendant, and Hermione was glad she had helped Remus pick it out. He even thanked Severus for the wand box. Hermione hadn't told him about getting it, but Severus acted as if he'd known about it all along.
All too soon, Hermione and Remus found themselves saying good bye to their lovers once again. They both promised not to hurt one another, and they promised to return as soon as they could. They apparated from Hogsmeade to Romania, a feat that wasn't easy. It literally drained them of their magic. They got two rooms at a little pub, and waited until the morning to go to the Riddle House. Over dinner that evening, Sirius took the opportunity to question Severus about a few things in his past.
"Harry tells me that you were close to Lily. I told him I had no idea, and he assured me I wouldn't have. It's very strange to learn secrets about her. She was very dear to me. As dear as a sister. She and Jamie took great care of Remus and I and I'll never forget that. He gave me the greatest give one could receive. I knew I'd never have a child of my own, however they bestowed a great honor upon me by naming me his godfather. He's a remarkable young man, and they would be very proud of him."
"I agree. I know we've had our moments, but I believe that I've lost the energy or the desire to fight with you any longer. As long as we have to work together, I shall try to be as pleasant as possible." Sirius took that as an apology and a promise of what's to come. He simply nodded, and bid Severus good night.
The following morning, each man changed into their animagus forms, and followed the scent of death. Severus was fairly certain he knew the way back to the place, but was unsure of what obstacles would be in their way. As they neared the house, Severus transformed back and told Sirius to stay in his form. The house wards would sense an intruder, and if there were any remaining followers, they'd be there in an instant.
Surprisingly, the wards were easy to read. Albus had given him Voldemort's wand, and Severus used it to locate the Grimorie. They entered the catacombs from behind a tapestry in the kitchen. The path was long, and dirty, and they nearly couldn't see where they were going. Even as Severus cast Lumos on his wand, it still remained dim. Sirius started tingling halfway in, and Severus turned to find her her entering the catacombs behind them. He transformed himself, and sensed that it was a death eater, but he couldn't sense which one. All he smelled was the Dark Mark, and soon enough, the uninvited guest showed himself. It was Evan Rosier, and he wasn't alone. He had Devon with him.
Sirius lunged at Evan, and took him by surprise. His teeth gripped his thigh tightly, and Severus took the chance to change back and stun Devon. He cast a powerful binding spell on him, and Sirius ripped the flesh from Evan's leg. He fell to the ground, barely conscious, and Severus cast the same binding spell on him.
"Sirius, transform and help me get them to the catacombs. I need to get a few things cleared up and then, you may do as you wish. Not until then." Sirius transformed back into himself, and cast a Mobilicorpus spell on Evan. Severus had already begun leading Devon down the narrow passageway into the catacombs up ahead. Sirius followed Severus into the golden lit room, and removed the spell. Both men sat on the floor, Evan with his leg bleeding profusely, while Devon looked like he was peering up into the Dark Lord's face himself. He was never more frightened in his entire life.
"I am sure you fully know why we are here. However, we didn't know you two would be here, nor do you pose any real threat to us. I shall send for a portkey, and have you transferred to the MLE, as soon as I have found what I am looking for-Voldemort's Grimorie." Severus spoke with his most cunning, cold voice, and Sirius even felt intimidated.
Severus held out Voldemort's wand, and did a locating charm on the Grimorie. The wand pointed to a tapestry of muggles being tortured repeatedly, and Sirius burned it off the wall. "Incendio!" He pushed on the wall behind it, and it didn't move. Severus muttered a spell with the wand pointed at the wall, and a few bricks fell out of place, revealing the Grimorie. However, when Sirius tried to grab the book, his hands caught on fire. Severus should have known the book would be spelled to be only opened by a Death Eater, or perhaps even the Dark Lord himself. He quickly put out Sirius' hands, and then healed them.
"Thank you Severus. That was the most painful thing I've felt in a long time."
"Well, if you hadn't been so stupid and just grabbed for it, I could have told you not to touch it, therefore you'd not have been hurt in the first place." He used the wand to check for wards, and surprisingly, there was only one. He had been working for nearly an hour trying to remove the ward, when he finally succeeded. He shrunk the Grimorie, and placed it in a small bottle which he placed in his robe. He didn't want to take any chances with losing it.
After they made their way back up and out of the Riddle House with their hostages, they found an owlery and sent word to Albus of their success. Severus requested a portkey with four MLE officers to return and take the two Death Eaters to their most inviting prison cell. He hoped that Arthur would tear the boy limb from limb, leaving no part attached to the wretched creature.
"Well, Sirius, should we open the book, or should we wait?"
"Well, I want to open it. I can only imagine what went through that disgusting filth's mind."
"As can I. Perhaps we should wait until we're back at Hogwarts, or even until this evening. Once we have had time to rest a bit."
"Agreed."
Unfortunately, they weren't able to open the book, nor could they even begin to remove the wards placed upon it. Sirius had an ingenious idea, and suggested that only Voldemort or his heir could remove the wards on the book. Severus, tired from trying for nearly three hours, agreed and so they sent another owl, this time to Harry.
Harry,
Good news, we have the Grimorie. However, we have been unable to remove the wards in order to open the damn thing. We need you to be at Hogwarts, when we return, and be prepared to use your strongest magic. We have an idea on how to open it, and you are required. Take care until then. We shall see you in a few days.
Sirius
"That was very tactful Black."
"It's the bloody truth! Who says I have to write an eloquent letter?"
"No one. I was merely making an observation, that is all."
"Well, it gets the point across."
"True. Shall we go to sleep, or would you rather travel?"
"Bed. Then we travel in the morning."
Hermione and Remus had been keeping busy, both reading the other's books. They had began a ritual of eating all three meals together, and even sharing the ice cream snack in the evening. They discussed their roller coaster relationships and were both very glad to discover they weren't the only ones having the occasional problem.
One evening, Hermione was lying on her back, flat on the floor of their parlor, when she felt the baby move for the first time. "Remus! Come here hurry!" He ran to her side, immediately and was prepared to help her to the infirmary. He thought there was a problem with the baby. "No you dolt! It's moving come here, feel this." Remus placed his hand gently onto her swollen abdomen, and felt the very forceful movement inside.
"Wow! Does that hurt?" He was amazed at how well pregnancy suited her. In his eyes, she'd only gotten more beautiful as she progressed into motherhood. He knew the fates were on Severus' side by making Hermione and him fall in love together. He knew Severus had been shunned just as he had. He was very glad he'd finally found peace after living in peril for over twenty years.
"No it doesn't hurt. It's just weird. Like something in trying to get out."
"Hermione," Remus said in his teaching voice, "Something is trying to get out. Tsk. Tsk. And you called me the dolt."
She hit him playfully on the arm, and he pulled her into a warm embrace. "I'm only kidding. You know I don't think you're that stupid." She returned the hug tightly, and pulled away.
"I know. I wish Sev had been here to feel it. It's so amazing, and he missed it." Tears began to well up into her eyes, and she fought hard to suppress them. Luckily, she succeeded.
"He'll get to feel it. And he'll be here for everything else. Don't worry Hermione. I know he loves you. He can't help he was the only one able to go and retrieve the Grimorie. Now come on. I'm dying for a bit of ice cream. How 'bout you?"
She agreed, and the two made their way down to the kitchens. Once they had indulged themselves into a third bowl, Hermione began to question Remus' opinion about the Grimorie.
"Do you think it contains a counter curse to AK or not?"
"I suppose I have to agree with Severus. If anyone could find one it'd have to be old Voldie. We can't forget how intelligent and resourceful he was. Of course being a pompous bastard fits in there nicely as well."
"What do you think James and Lily would think of yours and Sirius' relationship?" This caught Remus completely off guard, and he had to think of his answer very carefully.
"Well, Lily probably would be just elated, and Prongs---I'm not sure how he'd react. I know he'd be happy for us, but it would take some getting used to on his part. Lily would just fall right in and not have any trouble at all accepting us, but Jamie was always a bit timid."
"Well, I think it's wonderful that you've got each other. Harry is very lucky to have the both of you in his life."
"Thank you Hermione. That's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me."
"Well, you should hear it more often."
Severus and Sirius approached the castle just before lunch. They both were starving, and smelled of something foul. They'd had the unfortunate experience of outrunning a pack of dogs, all trying to get a piece of Severus. Sirius contemplated letting them have him, but decided he'd never be forgiven if anything happened to Severus in his presence. No one but Albus and Harry knew they'd be returning so early. Remus and Hermione had figured it taking them at least two weeks to obtain the Grimorie. They were both in for a pleasant surprise.
She had just finished writing the ingredients on the board when she felt his presence. She wasn't sure how she knew, but she felt him near her. The fourth year Gryffindors and Slytherins were making a shrinking solution, and she couldn't leave them for an instant. She'd just have to wait out the remainder of the class time until she went in search of him.
Severus had went straight to his chambers and showered. He felt refreshed afterwards, and made his way to his classroom. He knew she'd be in there teaching, and he had a pleasant surprise for her. He'd picked a few orchids from the greenhouse, and brought them in to her. Using his foolish wand waving, as he called it, he levitated an orchid, and floated it over to where she stood beside his pulpit, eyes never leaving the students before her. She knew in an instant it was from him, and anxiously awaited for him to show himself. He mumbled an invisibility spell, and carried the next orchid to her. He was standing over her, peering down and whispered into her ear. "Did you miss me?" She trembled at his voice, and nearly shrieked when he placed a soft kiss to her bare neck.
"Severus." His name rolled off her tongue, only audible to him. A few students took notice of her flushed state, and he took the opportunity to reveal himself and scare half of them nearly to death. He instructed them to clean up, and they would finish the potion their next scheduled class. After all the students were gone, he placed a note on the door stating that they were to write a four foot essay on the uses of Hinkypunks, and led his beautiful lady into their chambers.
