Chapter 11 –
Spider Bites and Opened Eyes
Ron woke up with an aching head. At first he thought it was
because of sleeping on the ground, then he realized he
wasn’t. It felt like he was on a couch, or a bed.
Which meant he’d been found.
He opened his eyes to a dark room full of darker shadows.
He was, indeed, on a bed, in someone’s home. Who and where, and more
importantly, how he wasn’t sure. He knew only that he needed to get away so Lucius
wouldn’t find him. He sat up, but instantly wished he hadn’t when his head throbbed
and the room swam before his eyes.
“So, you’ve finally woken up, I see,” drawled a familiar
voice from on the deepest shadows.
“W-who’s there? Where am I? How did you find me?”
“You showed me where you were in a dream, Ron. It’s like I
could feel you.” Came the familiar drawl again.
“Your voice sounds so familiar, but I can’t seem to place
it. It’s so hard to think...” Ron gently shook his head, but regretted it
instantly. The room swam a little more.
“I shouldn’t wonder,” came the
voice again, closer this time. “Not only have you broken Lucius’ compulsions
for the time being, but you’ve gotten a bad spider bite on your left shoulder.
You’ve been hallucinating for 3 days. You should lay
down again and sleep. I’ll have one of my house elves bring you some food
later.”
“No!” Ron yelled. “Please, I need to know who you are, to
know I’m safe. Please show yourself.”
“Alright, Ronald. Keep your shirt
on.”
Ron head the voice whisper “Lumos”. When his eyes adjusted
to the light that had appeared at the foot of his bed, he looked up to see who
had found him and gasped.
Draco Malfoy was standing at the foot of his bed, grinning
at him.
“YOU!” Ron yelped when the sound of
his own voice made his head pound.
“Me, Weasley,” sneered Draco. It
wasn’t the same sneer that Ron remembered from school, though – it was more
amused that arrogant, and Draco seemed to be genuinely concerned about him.
“Draco, you don’t want me around you, believe me,” groaned
Ron. “If your father ever gets his hand on me again, he’ll know everything I
know.”
“I know, Ron.” Draco said simply as he lit a candle and
extinguished his wand so the lighting would be enough to see by, but not so
much to hurt Ron’s eyes.
“What are you going to do with me?”
“Well, since you’ve thrown off my fathers compulsions,
you’re no longer a danger to me, Hermione or our baby. I’m going to get you
back to full health, then we are going back to England
so we can face my father. He has to be stopped, Ron, and only you can do that.”
Ron listened to Draco as he told him what he wanted to do.
At first Ron didn’t want to go back, he just wanted to keep running. As he
thought about it, though, he realized he couldn’t run forever.
“Alright, Draco. I just hope you
realize I can’t face your father alone.”
“I know. That’s why we’re going with you.”
“We?” questioned Ron.
“Yes. Me, Hermione, Harry, Ginny, Severus
and Neville. I’m not sure why, but the seven of us have got to
get together.”
*************
“He is in Venice.”
The Auror intoned after being in trance with the four younger witches and
wizards.
“Where? Can you tell us where?”
asked Severus sharply.
“Not specifically.” The man rubbed is bald head tiredly.
“All I can give you is a picture of a large house – possibly a manor – and a
young man with shoulder length blond hair and silver eyes.”
Severus eyes widened even as Hermione gasped.
“Draco’s?” she squealed. “He’s with Draco?”
The others shook themselves awake, stretching tired muscles.
Hermione quickly filled them in while Severus stepped out of the room. When he
came back he was holding an old umbrella.
“This,” He held up the forlorn-looking appliance. “Is a
portkey to Draco’s manor in Venice. Even if young Mister Weasley isn’t there, he’ll be close
by and we can use Draco’s help.”
They all gathered around the Potions Master, but before
Hermione touched it, she asked, “Is it safe for the babies?”
Of course it’s safe for us, Mother. Came the voice of her daughter. Now hurry up! You’ve got
to get there this afternoon!
Everyone stared at Hermione and looked around the room
trying to figure out where the voice was coming from.
“That’s Drucilla,” giggled Hermione. “My
daughter – who is even now asleep in my womb. She’s talked to Draco and I before. If she says it’s safe and we need to be there
soon, then we need to believe her. Let’s go!”
“How?...” Severus started to ask.
“We don’t have time, Severus,” yelled Hermione.
“Something’s going to happen, and it’s going to be bad if we don’t get
there when we should.” She touched the umbrella with her forefinger. “Now, let’s
go!”
Everyone else put their fingers on the umbrella and Severus
triggered the portkey. Then they were flying as something hooked behind their
navel and pulled.
*************
Ron got out of his bed quietly and went to sit by the
fireplace. Draco had been extraordinarily nice to him and they had done a lot
of talking. Ron even told Draco about Neville. They were starting to become
wary friends.
But Ron knew the others – including Neville – were coming to
find him. He didn’t really want them to come see him, but since they were, he
was going to meet them sitting in a chair, not lying on his back.
As he was trying to figure out how, exactly, he knew all
this, Draco came in.
“They’re coming,” started Draco. “I’m not sure how they know
you’re here, or how I know they’re coming, but they are and I do.”
“I know,” replied Ron. “I’ve known for the last hour that
they were coming.”
“Are you okay with that?” Draco asked.
“Well, not really, but it’s inevitable. They need to find
me. Mostly to make sure I’m alright and that you’re alright.” He smirked
weakly. “But a small part of Hermione is afraid that I’m here on Lucius’ orders
to either spy on you, hurt you, or both.”
“I know.” Draco grinned. Then his expression turned somber.
“I’ve not been able to heal that spider bite properly, and I’m afraid it’s
getting infected. I just don’t have the supplies here to treat it. Perhaps
Severus will have or do something that will be able to let it heal properly.”
Ron nodded morosely. Their eyes locked for a moment and
Draco nodded. “They’re here.”
*************
As they landed outside the manor, Hermione quietly asked
their child if they were on time and felt her silent assent.
“Okay, we’re on time,” spoke Hermione. “Let’s go find them.”
They walked up to the door and before anyone could stop him,
Harry rang the bell. He rose an eyebrow as everyone
looked at him with quizzical expressions. “Well, we’re not raiding the place.
No need to be rude.” Ginny smirked at his logic.
After a few moments the door opened and Draco smiled at
Hermione. “Come on in – we’ve been expecting you.”
Arm-in-arm Draco and Hermione led the rest of their little
group to the sitting room where she’d been taken in her dreams by their
daughter. They looked at each other with secret smiles.
“Now, Ron is not well,” Draco started, as Neville groaned.
“He’s alright, Neville, I swear. He got a nasty spider bite, I felt him getting
sick, and went to find him – I was unable to clear the infection and the bite
is still not healing properly. Severus, if you could look at it sometime soon,
before we get into lengthy discussions, I think that would be for the best.”
Severus nodded his assent. “He’s still a little weak, but I think that’s mostly
from fighting my fa – Lucius’ compulsions.”
He opened the door to the sitting room and ushered them all
in.
As they filed in, Ron stood up with the help of a cane and a
house elf.
“Neville!” He stretched out the arm
not preoccupied by the cane to his lover as Neville pushed past everyone and
went to Ron, sitting them on the loveseat before Ron collapsed.
Neville wrapped his arms around Ron and held him tight. Then
the two lovers exchanged a lingering kiss that spoke to everyone how much they
had missed each other.
Severus looked around. “So,” he sneered in surprise. “When
was I going to be told about that?”
Everyone laughed as Ron and Neville broke off the kiss and
blushed.
“Well, we thought you’d figured it out,” laughed Harry. “You
were the one that discover the Heartbonding, after all!”
“It was with all of you, not just Ron and Neville, or
I would have,” explained Severus weakly.
Hermione’s eyes sparkled with mirth as she looked at Ron and
Neville. “I do believe the two of you have flustered Severus!” She laughed.
The other four stared dumbly when the three men blushed crimson.
Ginny broke the tension by going up to her brother and
hugging him. “Just what did you think you were doing, Ronald Bilius Weasley, by
running off on your own? Don’t you know how dangerous that was?”
“Not as dangerous as staying there, under his
control!” Ron said angrily. “Running off might have put me in
danger, but it removed the threat to Mya and Draco!”
He motioned Draco and Hermione over and grabbed one of
each their hands. “I am so sorry for what I’ve done. I didn’t know what was
going on, but I’m sorry anyway. Can the two of you ever forgive me? For everything?”
Hermione hugged Ron tight with tears in her eyes, and a
second later, Draco was hugging them both.
“It’s alright, Weasley,” said Draco for the both of them
when they pulled away, Hermione nodded. “You were forgiven before the rest of
us ever got here.” Ron gave them a watery smile before collapsing on the spot.
“Severus!” Draco yelled while putting Ron on the couch.
Severus rushed over to all the commotion and waved his wand
over the youngest Weasley male, muttering under his breath. “The infection has
a good hold, but it isn’t anything I can’t handle.” He looked over his shoulder
at Harry. “Potter, bring me my bag, would you? It’s on the floor by the door.”
Harry grabbed the bag and handed it to his old Professor.
“Is there anything else I can do, Sev?”
The ex-Death Eater glared at his former student. “Yes, for
one, you must never call me that ridiculous name again,” he thought for
a moment. “Go get me a pot of water, then herd the rest of these dunderheads
over to the other side of the room and keep Longbottom away. I might have to
lance the wound, and I don’t need him practicing his histrionics on me.”
Harry shook his head in amusement and went about getting
Severus the water. Once the kettle of water was safely by the Potions
professors’ side, he drove the horde of worried friends over to the other side
of the room to let Severus work in peace.
*************
After an hour and a half, and two Calming Draughts fed to
Neville, later, Severus joined them on the opposite side of the room.
“I’ve gotten all the poison leeched from Mister Weasley’s
system,” sighed Severus. “And if we hadn’t gotten here today, tomorrow would
have been too late. It’s fortuitous that we arrived when we did.”
Neville, despite the Draughts, gave a strangled choke and
bawled into Ginny’s shoulder.
“Why don’t one of you take Neville
up to one of the rooms? Once I’m sure it won’t hurt him, I’ll bring Ronald to him.”
Draco nodded. “I’ll have Dirken show you to a room.” Ginny
wrapped an arm around Neville, and with their little guide, walked Neville to a
room to rest in.
Hermione, Harry and Draco walked over to where Ron was
resting. He was as pale as a sheet and very drawn looking, like he hadn’t been
sleeping well. As one the three friends reached out and touched him, trying to
reassure themselves that he was not going anywhere.
Severus stayed on the other side of the room, wondering at
it all. Five months ago, Draco hated this young man, now he was one of the most
concerned. Just as he was thinking it must be due to the Heartbond, he
watched in awe as their bond started strengthening, he could actually see
the bond getting stronger as the moments passed.
Then, one by one, they all released their hold, turned and
walked out of the room. Harry was the last to leave and all he said was,
“Please take good care of him, Professor.”
Severus nodded, confounded at what he had just witnessed.
How had these bonds grown so strong in such a short period of time? As he was
contemplating this, Ron started to rouse.
Severus went over to the couch that housed Ron at the
moment, to make sure no unforeseen complications were settling in. As he stood
next to the couch, Ron opened his eyes.
“Thank you, Severus,” he croaked.
“It is probably best, Mister Weasley,” bit Severus, perhaps
more harshly than he meant. “That you not waste your energy thanking me. I did
nothing for you that I wouldn’t have done for anyone else.”
“But you did something for me that no one else here would
have been able to, Severus,” his words were coming out slurred from the potions
he’d had to drink, but he needed to say this. “You saved m’life.
Than’s Sev’rus. You’re mah hero.” Then Ronald Weasley sank into sleep.
Severus was taken aback. He had been told several times that
he was a hero, but no one had ever called him their hero. He shook his
head. The boy was obviously babbling because of the potions. Take it with a
grain of salt, Old Man. You know that by tomorrow, he’ll have forgotten that he
said it, and he’ll be up Longbottom’s arse in no time.
With a deep and sorrowful sigh, he smothered all the wisps
of dreams and might-have-beens, cast the Mobilicorpus spell to take Weasley to Neville, and
went upstairs to get some sleep.
*************
Severus had tossed and turned for the first couple of hours
after putting Ron into Neville’s hands. When he finally woke, everyone else was
already up and he was still a bit surly from little sleep
when he came upon them.
They were all settled around the kitchen table, laughing at
something when he made his entrance. They all looked up when he came in and
smiled.
“Thank you, Sir,” Neville gushed. “Thank you for Healing him.”
“It’s quite all right, Mister Longbottom,” sniped Severus.
“I would have done the same for any of the rest of you.”
“Oh, Severus,” simpered Hermione playfully. “Does
that mean that you actually care about us?”
He smirked at her. “Hardly… it simply
means that I do not wish to have to exhume in this terrain. There is
quite a bit of clay in the soil, and it is very difficult to dig.”
Everyone stared dumbfounded at their prior instructor until
Ron started laughing. As everyone stared at Ron, they too saw what he saw… same
old Potions Master hiding his true concern.
“And what, pray tell, is so amusing?” Severus asked.
“You are,” answered Harry. “I think we’ve all come to know
you too well to believe the excuse you just gave for saving Ron… or wanting to
save any of us, really.”
Everyone smiled at Severus, thanking him silently.
“Alright, enough of this lovey-dovey shite. We need to figure out how Lucius was able to
get Ronald under his control.”
When they all continued to smile at him, he got snarky. “Alright, alright, enough!” he sneered. “Let’s get
to work!”
“Alright, Professor,” responded Ron and
Neville with big grins.
Severus narrowed his eyes and stared at them for several
long minutes, but when they kept grinning at him, he growled, “You two are too
damned cute for your own good.”
Their smile slid off their faces, replaced with looks of
shock at what he had just said. He laughed at the looks on their face and
walked over to them.
“What? You didn’t expect that from me? I’ll have you
know I’ve probably bedded more men than either of you could dream of. I could
teach you things that would make your hair stand on end and your toes curl.”
The couples' look went at once from shock to a hungry gleam.
“Would you, Severus?” asked Ron.
He looked down at them both and said simply. “Perhaps.” Then turned and went to go fetch a coffee.
Hermione and Draco were sitting on the far side of the table
by themselves, and they overheard the little exchange between the three
men. They looked at each other with shock at first, then
they looked at one another with a conspiratorial gleam.
“He has been alone for an awfully long time,” smirked Draco.
“Yes, he has,” mused Hermione.
“Don’t you think he deserves some fun?”
“I think we should help those two seduce him,” Hermione
grinned mischievously.
“But, how?” Draco whined. “How are
we going to convince them to seduce him into their bed? Or convince him to go
to their bed?”
“Easy. I’ll convince them and you can convince
him. Then we just have to get them in the same room.” She looked at
Draco’s mouth hanging open and laughed. “Oh, come now – it won’t be that
hard. You can convince a man that something was his idea even if that
particular thought had never crossed his mind.”
Draco leered at her. “Are you sure you were sorted into the
right house? That sounded awfully Slytherin.”
“Awfully is right! You wouldn’t have known what hit
you if I had been sorted into that house,” she smirked back.
“So, you are talking to Ron and Neville and I’m talking to
Severus?”
“Right.” When she confirmed their tasks,
Draco sighed.
“What’s wrong?” snickered Hermione.
“I have a feeling I’m going to be visiting St. Mungo’s very
shortly.”
“Why? Are you feeling ill?” Hermione asked with concern.
“No, but once Severus is through with me, I’ll definitely
need a Healer.”
“Oh, poor baby!” Hermione laughed.
“Just let it drop that you overheard them saying they wanted to seduce him,
I’ll take care of the rest, dear.” She smiled, patting his cheek.
“It always makes me nervous when you say that.” He muttered
under his breath.
*************
Severus was feeling irritable. He felt there was something
to be done, but he didn’t know what. And when Severus Snape was unable to not
only control his emotions, but be
unable to explain them as well it made him moody… as well as cranky. Although he’d never admit that to anyone.
As he turned the corner to walk into the study, Draco plowed
right into him.
“OOF!” the air was expelled from his lungs as he and Draco
collided.
“Draco! Watch it!” Severus grabbed the young man to stop Draco
from falling backwards.
“Thanks, Severus,” said his former student, who was looking
a little flustered.
“What’s wrong, boy?” Severus sneered. “You look a little…
bothered.”
“That’s one way to put it,” Draco grated between clenched
teeth. “Or you could say that Hermione, Ron and Longbottom embarrassed the hell
out of me, so I was making a strategic retreat.”
Severus scowled to cover his amusement at his godson’s
discomfiture. “And how, exactly, did they do that?” he asked, raising an
eyebrow at the blush on Draco’s cheeks.
Draco turned away from his godfather, trying to hide his
blush. It didn’t work. “Well, the three of them were talking about fantasies.
Ron was talking about how he’d always wanted to seduce you, when Neville pipes
up with how he likes his men ‘not
quite so dark’, and then makes calf eyes at me.” His blushed deepened when he looked back at Severus. “You know that it’s not like I’ve never bedded a man, but they were gossiping like a bunch of giggling schoolgirls! When I told Neville that I was a one person man, he dismissed me –
dismissed me! – with
a wave of his hand and said that you’d
probably have much more to teach them than I would anyway. Then they started
talking about you again!”
Severus went rigid with shock – among other things.
So, the boys want to
seduce me, eh? He thought, smoothing his hair down, not feeling the least
bit restless any longer. Let’s see what
they can come up with… before I
pounce on them.
“Severus?” Draco waved his hand in front of his friends face
to bring his attention back. “What were you thinking just now? You looked like
the cat that caught the canary!”
“Yes – and I felt that way, too,” he smirked. “Excuse me
Draco – I have something that I must attend to.”
“Of course,” the young Lord Malfoy nodded and walked off. He
couldn’t wait to find Hermione and tell her Severus’ reaction to what Ron and
Neville had said.
*************
Hermione was in deep conversation with Ron and Neville about
– what else? – men. Especially tall,
dark, brooding Slytherin men.
“Did you see how he was teasing us?” Neville squeaked. “I
thought I was going to explode!”
“Me, too,” laughed Ron. “If I thought it was possible, I’d
truss him up like a Christmas goose and…” He looked at Hermione. “Well, you
know.” He looked at the table and blushed brightly.
“So, why can’t you?” sniffed Hermione. “It’s not like he
wasn’t interested. Just lure him into your bedroom and jump him. It isn’t that
hard to do!”
Hermione looked up just in time to see Draco stroll by the
door and jab his thumb behind him. Severus was coming!
“It’s a nice dream, anyway,” sighed
Ron.
“Why does it have to be a dream?” Hermione shouted, showing
her exasperation at the two young men. “If you would just quit being such
chickenshits, you could have already had
your wicked way with him!”
“What’s all the shouting?” Severus asked when he walked into
the kitchen.
The three inhabitants looked up, startled to see the object
of their conversation come walking in the room. Ron and Neville looked at
each other, then at the table, blushing.
Hermione smirked. “Because these two are
prats who won’t follow after their dreams.”
Ron and Neville’s heads flew up and they stared at her,
horrified, afraid that she would tell Severus what they had been talking about.
“Don’t worry, you two cowards,” Hermione leered. “I won’t go
blathering your secrets to anyone. It’s not my place.”
She surreptitiously looked at Severus, to note there was a certain gleam in his eye as he regarded the two
nervous young men. “ The three of you have a lot of
‘common interests’, perhaps you should explore what that might mean.”
She looked at each in turn. She could tell that they all
knew what she was talking about, but
they didn’t want to be the one to say anything to the others.
“MEN!” She shouted as she threw up
her hands and stalked out of the kitchen.
“What in the hell
was that about?” Severus turned to
Ron.
“Well, I suppose it was about Neville and I
talking about how much we would like it if you… uh… joined… us for a night, but
being too ‘chickenshit’, as she called it, to come right out and ask you.” He
laughed. “The bit about our ‘common interests’ was a hint that you were
supposed to follow and realize that we want you.”
If Severus was at all surprised by Ron’s brazen
announcement, he hid it well. “I see.” He quirked an eyebrow at them, but only
said. “If you’ll excuse me,” and he walked out of the kitchen.
Ron and Neville exchanged glances and sighed. “Well, it was a nice dream…”
None of them realized that what the future had in store for
them was nothing like their fantasies.
*************
“He looked completely gobsmacked!” Draco crowed. “Then his
expression changed and he looked like a hawk stooping for the kill.” He
chuckled.
“Well, good,” sighed Hermione. “I
shouted at the boys for being too chickenshit to pursue him and he walked in on
it. Hopefully he got the message, or one of the boys volunteered the
information,” she sighed again. “But I wouldn’t count on it.” She said as she
sat at the kitchen table.
“Oh, I wouldn’t too sure.” Harry’s voice came from behind
them.
Hermione whipped around to look at Harry. “Why do you say
that?”
“Because Severus just traded rooms with us,” Ginny Potter
chimed in from behind her husband.
“Traded rooms?” Draco asked. “But he had a private room and
the two of you were sharing the suite with…” Draco’s eyes went round, and he
gaped.
“The suite with Ron and Neville!?”
Hermione asked incredulously.
“’Fraid so,” smirked Harry. “I
hope it’ll still be in good shape when he’s done with them. I have a feeling
it’s probably going to be pretty – noisy.”
“Well, I should hope to shout!” Hermione and Draco said in
unison.
The two couples looked at each other for moment, then laughed. They all wished they could be a fly on the
wall tonight!
