Chapter Summary: Draco reveals his true feelings for Harry.
A/N: Time to find out how Draco really feels...wibble! This chapter gets kinda plotty, but fear not, chapter 12 holds fluffy smut for your wanking pleasure. ;o)
Lucius Malfoy sat in his meticulously appointed study, sipping an excellent 25 year old port from a crystal goblet. He leaned back in his butter-soft leather chair, re-reading the letter he’d received from Severus Snape at dinner.
Lucius,
Have you given any thought to the matter I raised with you the last time we met? I know you are reluctant to decide, but the one who protects me has offered time and again to shelter you and Narcissa from any that may seek to harm you.
There is something that may sway your decision, if the incident at the Midsummer Ball last year was not sufficient. (Pardon me for bringing that foulness into this, my friend, but my methods, though brutal, have a purpose.)
I have recently observed your son communicating in secret with the Boy Who Lived. It appears they are spending time together privately, though I have no proof of this. I believe they are, at the very least, friends, if not lovers. If the latter is true, I needn’t tell you of the danger Draco will be in, should his involvement with Potter be revealed. He will be no more than a pawn, used to hurt Potter at the Dark Lord’s whim. Again, I needn’t tell you of this, you unfortunately know of his cruelty first hand.
What I propose is that you and Narcissa come to Hogwarts and speak with the Headmaster with regard to his offer. You will be protecting your wife, your child, and yourself if you choose to accept. Join us, Lucius. Do it for Draco’s sake.
Your friend,
Severus
P.S. I have charmed this parchment to hide its message should any hand besides yours touch it, so you needn’t fear prying eyes. S.
Lucius crumpled the letter in his hand, his heart twisting in turmoil. Damn Severus to hell! Manipulative, conniving little shit. Angry tears stood in his eyes, and his hand shook as he raised the goblet of blood red liquid to his lips to drain the glass.
“Draco, I need to see the spell book, do you still have it?” Hermione said, looking curiously at the way Draco was staring at Harry.
“Hmm? Right, I still have it,” he said, dragging his eyes from Harry’s face.
“Do you have time to go get it now?” Hermione asked, the wheels in her brain turning with increasing speed.
Draco nodded, glancing at Harry again before hurrying away from the desk and out of the library.
“Twitchy bugger, isn’t he?” Ron said, scathingly. “Don’t worry, mate,” he said to Harry, reassuringly, “we’ll get that curse off and you won’t have to touch the filthy git again.”
Harry tried to smile at him, but couldn’t help feeling a twinge of reluctance at the thought of going back to the way things were with Draco before all this. Still, he couldn’t be selfish. Draco was probably dying to get rid of the curse anyway. And of course there were all the other reasons they couldn’t be together. Harry sighed.
“Harry,” Hermione said, looking at him carefully. “Are you repulsed by the thought of touching Malfoy?”
Harry hesitated, glancing worriedly at Ron. “Honestly, no, I guess not.”
“Well, Draco said his cousin and the other person under the curse ended up killing each other because they were being forced to do things together, right?”
“Right,” he said, cautiously.
“Do you think you...on some level...want to touch him?” Hermione asked.
“Oh, Hermione,” Ron shouted, “that’s bloody disgusting. How could you insult Harry like that?”
“Ron, keep your voice down,” Hermione hissed. “Have you ever thought for a moment that you might be insulting Harry by talking about Malfoy like that? Have you seen the way they look at each other?”
“Guys, I’m right here,” Harry said, annoyed that his friends were discussing him like he wasn’t in the room. “And what do you mean, the way we look at each other?” he asked Hermione curiously. “How does Draco look at me?”
“Merlin! Draco, again! I’m sick of hearing you call him that, Harry, what's this bloody curse done to you? Turned you into best friends?” Ron yelled, smacking the desk hard with his palms.
Harry didn’t answer, as Madam Pince was looming menacingly over them, ordering them all out of her library.
Draco arrived at the entrance to the library, spell book in hand, and found that Hermione was waiting for him outside the doors, alone.
“What’s going on? Where’s Harry?” he asked. His stomach was still doing flips at Harry’s accidental revelation a few minutes earlier. He wasn’t sure if he should be elated or terrified. Right now it was a mix of both.
“We got kicked out of the library,” Hermione said, with a sigh. “And then Harry and Ron had to go to Quidditch practice. Don’t know how they’ll be able to get any practicing done if the Captain and Keeper aren’t speaking, though. Come on, we’ll find an empty classroom to take a look at that book.”
Draco followed her down the corridor into an empty room that looked like it hadn’t been used in decades. Hermione cleaned off two of the desks and seats with her wand and they sat down, the silence growing uncomfortable.
“Erm,” Hermione began. “Do you want to show me the curse?”
He opened the book, found the right page, and handed it to her. “There,” he said, pointing. “The Curse of the Forbidden Fruit.”
“Thanks.” Hermione read it through, chewing on her lip. She looked up when she was finished, catching the troubled look on Draco’s face. “Something wrong?” she asked.
Draco immediately smoothed his expression. “Of course not,” he said. “Have you thought of any ideas to try lifting the curse?” He didn’t mention that his father had already told him there was no way to remove it, nor a counter curse.
Hermione cocked her head. “Malfoy, who did you think Harry was in love with when you cursed him?”
“You.”
“What gave you that idea?” she asked, surprised.
“Everyone thought he was. After you and the Weasel got together he was moping around all the time, and he looked real tired and sad...” Draco trailed off.
“And you noticed he looked tired and sad?”
“Who could have missed it? He looked bloody awful, didn’t he?”
“Hmmm....I see.” She looked away, thoughtfully, chewing on her lip again. “Now, your cousin, the one who was under the curse with his enemy,” she said, “you say they killed each other?”
“While they were shagging,” Draco nodded, unsure of where Hermione was going with this line of questioning.
“And you have always hated Harry, correct?”
“Yeah.” His expression was guarded.
“And you haven’t tried to kill him or hurt him in any way since you two started getting together?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I’m not a complete nutter, that’s why,” he said, irritated. “What the hell are you on about?”
“Hmmm...how do I know you aren’t trying to gain his trust and then expose him to You Know Who?”
“Look, I don’t have any dastardly plans,” Draco said, snidely. “It was just an accident, simple as that.”
“Of course, right. Now, do you think your cousin and his enemy, when they, you know...do you think they demanded to know that nobody else would be allowed to touch the other?” She saw the murderous expression on his face.
“That was a private conversation,” he said, tightly.
“Right, sorry,” Hermione said, lightly. “Well, nevertheless, I did happen to witness the scene, and you seemed rather sweet with him. Those kisses at the end, especially. Does the curse make you kiss him like that? Or is it something you want to do on your own?”
Draco glared at her mutinously.
“Do you enjoy being with Harry?” she asked, ignoring his growing anger.
“We fuck because the curse forces us to, that’s the end of the story, Granger,” Draco said, fiercely. “Why not enjoy it if we can? It’s what any other seventeen year old boy would do, isn’t it? He’s just another notch on the belt,” he spat.
“He means nothing to you?”
“Nothing.”
“You want the curse lifted?”
“Of course,” Draco was shouting now.
“When You Know Who gathers enough supporters to start a war, you’ll stand across the lines from Harry and strike him dead if ordered to?”
Draco hesitated, paling.
“If you hate him so much and he means nothing to you, why do you look at him like he’s the only one in the room?” Hermione pressed, her voice soft.
“Because I’ve loved him since we were twelve, all right?” Draco yelled, his face turning red with emotion. “Are you happy, now? Is that what you wanted me to admit? Fine! I’ve loved him though he didn’t spare me a second thought. He’s been my obsession through the years, the one I always wanted and knew I could never have! The Golden Boy, the one who’s meant to save the world, and who the hell am I to expect anything from him? I never had a hope.” Tears had begun to roll down Draco’s cheeks. “But now,” he said, his voice breaking. “Now I’ve found out there is hope after all, and that hurts more than being sure he’d never choose me in the first place. Because I will never be able to choose him.” He slipped his face into his hands, feeling absolutely wretched. He flinched when he felt Hermione reach for his shoulder, but relaxed when she stroked his back soothingly.
“You know there is hope for you two? He told you?” she whispered.
Draco spoke without lifting his face, and his words were muffled so much that Hermione had to strain to understand him. “He said he had been resisting the curse all summer, but I only cast the spell on Monday night.”
“Oh.” Hermione rubbed his shoulder. She found that she wasn’t surprised. It had been clear to her that Harry and Draco had real feelings for each other as soon as she’d seen the way they looked at each other. “But doesn’t that make you happy?” she asked.
“I’m fucked, Hermione,” he mumbled, sounding crushed. “He finally loves me and I still can’t have him. My father would kill me.”
A/N:
To Morgane (Old Loves): I added you to my update list prior to posting Chapter 10...it’s possible that you aren’t getting my e-mails because they’re being routed to your junk mail folder. Please check in there and add me to your safe list so that my update e-mails come through. :o)
To those of you who wish the chapters were longer...I figured it would be better to update more often (my current average is about 3-4 times a week) than to leave you hanging for longer while I finish writing. I hope you understand. :o)
