Chapter 11: Discoveries
~*~
Draco stared into the darkness. It was in the middle of the night and he was lying next to Pansy in his bed. Pansy was snoring loudly, but that wasn’t the main reason Draco couldn’t sleep. He wanted to hit Pansy in her artificial face. Her snoring was driving him mad.
And there was something else bugging him immensely. So Hermione was acting weird and he saw his father with her on the Hogwarts grounds with his arm around her. Surely that didn’t mean a thing... right? She could have been cold, but somehow he didn’t see his father do something like that to a mudblood unless... No! How long had she been with him? Two days?
How could it be that they were so close within two days? Of course he and Hermione were close toohin hin two days, but that was because he was more than willing to gain her trust and she... well he did not know what Hermione really thought about him. The way she acted would make you think she cares about me. Could it be a game? No... no Gryffindor would get it in his mind to do such a thing. It was something a Slytherin would do. Could all the coldness around her, the hate and anger towards the dark side make her do this kind of thing? Could he really be so mistaken in her actions?
He looked at the blonde hair next to him and remembered how Pansy had gone on and on about this pregnancy thing. Apparently she had taken a potion that would stimulate the pregnancy up to 98%, but it hadn’t worked. For obvious reasons to Draco, but Pansy had been very confused. It was kind of funny, although it made him wonder if this potion of her could be a danger to his potion. He would have to talk about that with Severus. He already offered to remake the potion for Pansy, but she didn’t seem to trust him. Which wasn’t really without reason, he would of course make it the wrong way. Maybe he could find a potion that is able to fake a pregnancy. He wouldn’t have to sleep with her again.
When Pansy was paying Lord Voldemort a visit, he had contacted Dumbledore and Harry. Dumbledore had asked him to find out as much as possible about the creatures Voldemort was raising in Hogwarts. Draco’s first step was to talk to Voldemort when they had one of his training sessions. The second step was his father... where he now dreaded to go because of Hermione. He tried not to lose hope. He almost asked Harry for advise, almost. He didn’t dare to tell Harry what was going on in Hogwarts. He felt bad enough telling him about Ron’s situation.
There was definitely something going on, but he didn’t know what. Of course Pansy was trying to get Hermione away from him, he knew that part, but Hermione was acting weird. She wasn’t herself.
Draco got out of his bed. This wasn’t helping one bit. Pansy kept snoring so she didn’t notice the loss of warmth in her bed. Draco changed his clothes and softly closed the door behind him. The parchment and Harry’s map in his pocket. He opened Harry’s map and quickly localised the Death Eaters. He slipped out of his tower and moved towards the place where the animals were held. Death Eaters were everywhere, but because of Harry’s map Draco could hide in a classroom when Death Eaters came too close. Besides it wouldn’t be a total disaster if they saw him, but he really didn’t want to increase Voldemort’s distrust in him.
When he arrived at the place the students were building cages, he noticed that some of the students were still working. Death Eaters were guarding the way, although they were nearly sleeping. He pulled out his wand and stunned the two hooded figures from behind the corner. After he made sure that they would stay stunned for a while, he moved in.
The cages were finished and he could hear a few animals. He hid himself behind a large pile of sand until he was sure nobody was looking his way. He walked to the edge of the huge hole and looked down. He saw a two creatures that looked like trolls inside a cage. The other large cages were still empty as far as he could see.
He moved back to the pile of sand and waited for a little boy to walk by. He grabbed the boy, called Colin Creevy, and pulled the boy behind the pile.
“Don’t yell when I remove my hand or I’ll cast avada on you before you can even blink,” Draco warned, pointing his wand at the boy.
The boy nodded, his eyes were big with fear.
Draco slowly removed his hand and looked him in his eyes. “When are these cages to be finished?” Draco whispered.
“I don’t know... I...I think in two days,” Colin stuttered.
“Thank you, that is all I wanted to know,” Draco said, he pulled a big piece of chocolate out of his pocket and gave it to the boy. “Not a word or you won’t be saved,”
After his last warning he let the boy go and moved out. Luckily he did not have to stun anyone else. He removed the stunning spell, after he cast a memory spell on the two Death Eaters.
Draco walked back, pulling Harry’s map out of his pocket again. He didn’t want to, but eventually he gave in and let his eyes wonder to his father’s room. A little black dot named ‘Hermione Granger’ was currently in Lucius’ room. Halfly covered by a dot called ‘Lucius Malfoy’. Draco’s heart sank to his shoes and he gave a tireding sigh.
How could this be? This was madness! It couldn’t be... The evidence was right in front of him. Was he such a fool to be fooled by a Gryffinfor... by a girl? Maybe Love does make someone blind.
Draco walked into an empty classroom and collapsed on one of the chairs. He couldn’t stand the idea of his father’s eyes on Hermione’s skin. His lips caressing hers. It was as if someone had grabbed his heart and crunched it. He could barely breathe and felt the urge to break something.
He grabbed the map, but remembered it was Harry’s and slowly let go of the now crumpled up map. He moved his hands over the parchment to smooth the material again. His eyes fell once again on his father’s bedroom. Hermione’s dot was still covered by his father’s, but now he noticed that there were two dots he did not notice before. One called ‘Tom Riddle’, he was obviously pacing because his dot kept moving back and forth. And the other called ‘Ronald Weasley’?
What was Weasel doing in his father’s chambers? There was definately something going on. It was in the middle of the night for Merlin’s sake!
Draco jumped up and walked out of the classroom heading for his father’s chambers. Which were only a few corridors away.
What should he do? What Could he do? Make up some lame excuse to come in? New about Potter maybe?
Suddenly a dot called ‘Pansy Parkinson’ appeared from the stairs just behind him. She was walking quickly and would see him soon even though it was dark. Draco jerked around and saw a light approaching him.
Was she heading to his father’s chambers too?
Draco hid himself behind a statue, his heart beating rapidly. He watched her come closer and closer and as he expected she stopped in front of the portrait leading to his father’s chambers. She opened it and moved inside. Draco didn’t hesitate for one second and followed her, slipping through the portrait before it closed. He could hear the portrait murmur that she was the third this night and telling her that she was rude to wake him like that.
Pansy walked towards his father’s bedroom, while Draco hid himself in the shadows. He followed her to the door and stopped to eaves drop on their conversation.
~*~
Hermione jerked up. She had been reading books, refusing to let this war delay her studies. Lucius disappeared after their little walk, probably doing things Hermione did not want to hear about. Now he was back, as she heard the portrait slam against the wall.
She stood up, her eyes on the door waiting for it to open and show Lucius’ face. The book she had been reading was lying on the floor, but she didn’t dare to grab it. Apparently Lucius wasn’t in a good mood. She didn’t like the sound of the portrait slamming against the wall. It was done with a great amount of force.
“Miss Granger,” Lucius greeted her, when he opened the door and spotted her. His eyes were cold and did not meet hers.
Hermione felt a wave of coldness and knew that Voldemort was close behind Lucius.
“Miss Granger,” A second voice hissed, showing Voldemort in the entrance. “We are here to discuss some things. Sit down,” he commanded her.
Hermione sat down in the chair again, facing both Voldemort and Lucius. She was shaking a bit and this feeling that something bad was about to happen did not want to go away.
“I’ve heard that you did not listen to what I said,” Voldemort said, holding his hand up for her to be silent when she opened her mouth. “I told you to listen, but you don’t seem to understand the seriousness of this agreement we have. We want Draco back on our side, because he is my heir. I would have deleted him ages ago, but he’s important. If this doesn’t work we will have to drug him or delete him. You on the other hand aren’t important at all. I could crush you like a bug if I want to. Just like your little friend the weasel. Now you don’t want to have that on your concience, do you?”
Hermione shook her head and wanted to say something, but Voldemort cut her off.
“Good. We’re going to show you the seriousness of the situation now, because you are going to help you whether you want to or not. It is not your choice, understand?” Voldemort asked, standing in front of her.
Hermione nodded, now completely shaking. She had not meant for this to happen. Did she really underestimate the seriousness of the situation?
Voldemort grabbed her neck and made her arche back. “You are playing with fire, young foolish girl.” he hissed right into her face.
Her eyes were big with fear and flashed from Voldemort to Lucius and back. Voldemort was looking as if he was going to bite her and Lucius wasn’t even looking. He kept his gaze right in front of him. Suddenly Voldemort released her and walked to the door, opening it.
In the door way stood Ron in the middle of two Death Eaters. There were chains on his hands and feet. As far as Hermione could see he was unconcious. She didn’t realise that she was screaming until Lucius muffled her scream with his hand. She wanted to go to Ron, but Lucius was holding her tightly.
Voldemort signed the Death Eaters to move Ron towards the spot in front of the fire-place and ordered them to go afterwards.
Lucius grabbed Hermione’s arm and pushed her against the wall on the opposite of the room.
“Now you will see why it is foolish to Not Take Our Plans Serious!” Voldemort yelled. “Ennervate,”
Ron’s eyes fluttered open and he groaned. He held his head in his hands for a while, before he looked up. “Hermione?” he whispered, when he saw Hermione standing against the wall crying her eyes out.
“Yes. That is Hermione. The foolish girl who caused you all this pain,” Voldemort yelled, pointing his wand at Ron again.
Hermione screamed and tried to get to Ron, but Lucius was far too strong and kept her pressed against the wall. “Ron! No!”
“Crucio!” Voldemort yelled, with his back towards Hermione.
Ron doubled and fell on the floor in pain. Hermione saw that he refused to give in, but the pain was unbearable and eventually he started to sob softly. Hermione could not stand to watch and looked the other way, tears streaming down her cheeks. She gave Lucius a pleading look, but he quickly looked the other way and shook his head.
“Stop it!” Hermione yelled, when Voldemort didn’t stop. “He’ll Die! Stop!”
Voldemort turned to her. “Do you want me to stop because of him or because of the guilt you will be feeling?” he smirked, but finally lifted the curse.
Ron wasn’t moving, which made Hermione scream even harder. “You sick mental snake! You utterly disgusting creature!” she yelled, hysterically.
“Oh, but I’m not done yet,” Voldemort laughed at her insults.
It was then when someone knocked on the door. Voldemort jerked around, both of his eyebrows raised. “Yes?” he hissed through gritted teeth.
The door opened and Pansy Parkinson stood in the doorway, quickly closing the door behind her. She glanced to Hermione with a disgusted look upon her face, then greeted Voldemort. She bowed deeply in front of him.
“My Lord,” she said.
~*~
“My Lord,” Pansy said.
Draco pressed himself against the door, not wanting to miss a sound.
“Miss Parkinson. What are you doing here?” Voldemort asked angrily.
“I came to tell you that my husband Draco Malfoy is suddenly missing. This was the first place that came into my mind,” Pansy said. “for obvious reasons. Although I did not think you would allow him to watch, but he could-”
“Stop babbling. I thought I told you to keep an eye on him,” Voldemort hissed dangerously low.
Draco knew that Pansy was in trouble, but there was definately something going on. Which was not for his eyes or ears.
“I did, My Lord. I did not know that he would sneak out so late at night,” Pansy said.
There was a soft sound, the sound of soft sobs that increased a bit. Draco was sure that this was Hermione crying, but for what reason? He had the urge to walk into that room and cast Avada on Voldemort, but he know he could not do that. Harry was meant to kill Voldemort, it would definately fale.
“There is no need to panick, My Lord. He could be out for a walk,” his father said suddenly.
“He could accidentally come here,” Voldemort scowled.
“We are not that close My Lord. I doupt that he will pay me a visit in the middle of the night.” Lucius said carefully.
‘How wrong you are father,’ Draco thought smirking. ‘I will find out what is going on here.’
“Pansy, I don’t think this is for your eyes. Look how Miss Granger is taking this punishment,” Voldemort said.
Punishment? Were they punishing Hermione?
“My Lord, I beg you to let me stay. I’ve hated this boy from day one. I would find much pleasure in seeing him crumble,” Pansy’s shocking answer came.
Draco felt as if he had been stabbed. He had married the devil and they were punishing Weasel and making Hermione watch, but what for.
Voldemort laughed, making Draco shiver. “I will let you stay,” Voldemort said. “Now Lucius make sure you hold on to Miss Granger. She has to see what will happen if she tries to contact My Heir once more,”
All the pieces fell into place when Draco heard that. They were trying to keep Hermione away from him, by blackmailing her. If she tries to contact him, they will hurt Ron.
“No!” Draco heard Hermione scream. “No please, I understand now. You don’t need to punish him any longer. I won’t come anyw nea near Draco and I will play your little play, but please don’t hurt Ron. I beg you,”
Draco burried his face in his hands. He could not stand to hear this. Just imagine what Hermione must be going through. This was all his fault. He shouldn’t have tried to contact Hermione in front of Pansy. He had to find another way.
“Oh! Do you hear that? She’s begging me. I’m so moved,” Voldemort said sarcastically.
“My Lord. It won’t have any use to punish the boy any longer. He’s beyond feeling pain,” Lucius said.
Draco could not believe what he was hearing. Was this his father? Standing up for Hermione and Ron.
“If you take it any further you will either kill the boy or make him go insane. My Lord,” Lucius continued, covering up his slip.
There was a long silence. Where Draco had clenched his fists, he could feel the tension inside the room. It was penetrating the door.
“Well we don’t want that to happen, do we?” Voldemort said somewhat sarcastically. “Lucius I want a word with you later. Pansy, get the Death Eaters to remove this mudblood lover, Mr Weasley. I will be going to my chambers now and make sure that my Heir is found,”
Draco moved away from the door, hiding himself behind the couch in his father’s room. He watched the door open and Voldemort leaving Lucius’ bedroom, his cloak billowing behind him. Voldemort wasn’t looking that pleased with the situation. Draco couldn’t believe that Voldemort had let his father go like that, but on the other hand Lucius was told to come to Voldemort later. So maybe his father would be punished later. It wasn’t really a smart move to argue with Voldemort. Draco could not understand why his father did so in the first place. It was as if he almost had a heart, almost. He knew his father long enough to know that his father’s heart was as black as the night, but still... he would not forget this.
A few seconds later Pansy walked out, rushing for some reason. Although Draco had an idea why. He would like to see her face when he still wasn’t back in their chambers.
~*~
When Draco wanted to leave two Death Eaters came in for Ron. Draco made sure that he had a good view on Ron when the Death Eaters would carry him out of the chambers. He wanted to know and pass on the information to Harry and Dumbledore. They had to know what was going on. Harry would find out about his ‘relationship’ with Hermione, but hiding this was no option.
Ron was looking terrible. Blood was covering almost his entire face. He was unconscious and in much worse state than Draco had imagined. Voldemort had handled him like only Voldemort could. With absolutely no pity at all. Voldemort wouldn’t care less if he ‘accidentally’ killed someone, no... he would treasure every minute. He would kill Ron too, if Ron wasn’t useful anymore that is.
Draco pulled out his map and quickly scanned his route for Death Eaters. He saw that Lucius’ dot was moving towards the door. His heart suddenly jumped. If Lucius would leave, he would have the chance to talk to Hermione. That was precisely what he needed to do right now. Maybe his father would go out to talk to Voldemort.
He sat there behind a chair, his heart beating like hell, waiting for his father to go.
