Hermione paused for a moment in front of the large oak doors in front of her. Both played pictures of a snake with one red ruby eye, sparkling as it slithered up and down its length.
When she had woke earlier this morning she decided that instead of moping in her room for the 5th day in a row, she was going to venture out of over the manner. Her first stop, was of course, the garden. She watched it frequently from her bedroom window and often admired the beauty it held. In one of Hermione's few short words with Malfoy since she'd arrived, he'd told her that the garden was his mothers, and that it was the thing she prided above all. Hermione was surprised to hear that they used no magic with it, not even to help the flowers grow. It was definitely a shock when Hermione glanced out her window one morning only to see Malfoy on his hands and knees sprinkling seeds over the earth.
Malfoy.
Hermione couldn't put her finger on it, but he was acting strange....er as of late. It was almost as if he was acting civilly toward her. Apart from his normal pureblood cocky remarks, he was quiet and pensive almost every time that she saw him (which was only at meals and at tea). She got the feeling of a cold kind of indifference from him, as if he couldn't care less that she was there.
True to her word, Hermione had written Harry the day that she had gotten in. But that was 5 days ago, and she hadn't gotten a word in return. It was starting to frighten her, really.Harry was not the sort of person to leave her waiting like this, especially in her delicate situation.
The baby was being more active then ever. Hermione spent many nights lying in bed, watching as her child's little feet kicked against the flesh of her stomach. Her mind had been going over names as of late, and that was what lead her to the door she was now standing in front of.
The Library...It seemed like a good place to think.
Hermione took a deep breath as she pushed the doors open. Her mouth turned up into a smile as she peaked her head inside and saw the rows and rows of books just waiting for her to explore! Hermione closed the door softly behind her as she tip toed into the library. There were two large windows that went from the floor to the ceiling. The dust in the library tickled Hermione's nose with a familiarity that only made her smile grow wider. Hermione loved everything about this place. It was quiet and enchanting, yet it was screaming with excitement and adventure. It was a large circular room and the walls were lined with books of all shapes, sizes and color. On the wall opposite to her were a set of stairs which lead to a second balcony with yet more books. Beside the stair case sat a large wooden desk with a simple light atop of it. Hermione felt giddier than ever as she clapped her hands and stepped forward.
2 hours later....
Hermione sat at the desk with nearly twenty books in front of her. She'd only explored part of the lower level so far, but she figured she'd have plenty of time later to explore the the rest. Aside from a few vulgar books ("Why Purebloods Should Rule The Word" and "Artomus's Guide to Overcoming Halfblood Filth" etc...) The collection was rather amazing. She'd found a limited edition of "Hogwarts: A History" as well as a rare copy of "Burty Clober's Potions and Spells". But by far the most exciting book she'd found, was an old battered book by the name of "Read Me". To most, this would only appear to be a book about the history of toads and their uses in potions, but to those who knew better it would be a gateway to a nearly unlimited amount of information!
She was shocked, to say the least, when she had stumbled across it. Such a book should be kept in the owner's utmost care. Hermione guessed that the Malfoys simply didn't know what they held in their possession. You see, this book, though seeming to be something of little importance, actually is one of only 50 to be published. Most had been lost or burnt by the ministry. Only a few remain, and most belonged to wealthy wizarding families, such as the Malfoys. The secret to this book lie in the pages. All one had to do was tap the 13th page with their wand three times and say aloud the title of any book. Instantly the pages would fade and then reappear with the text of said book, and would only go back to it's original state after the book was once again closed. It was brilliant! Hermione had the power most would only dream of having at her finger tips! She could read any book, at any time and at her any whim!
But right now she was looking at baby names...
Hermione tapped her chin as she read down the list. "Coble, Conclint, Coderan, Cofforid...Uh, no. Maybe I'll try girls names then." Hermione flipped to the thirteenth page and tapped her wand three times. "'Baby Witch Names From Around the World'," she said aloud. She turned to page one. "Hm, Algred, Amnore, Androsafien, Aprence, Arnosa..." Hermione shook her head as she traced her fingers down the pages. "Gretholia...that's not too bad." Hermione cleared her throat. "Gretholia! Wake up sweetheart, it's time for your first day at Hogwarts!" she tested.
"It's going to be a boy, Granger. And Merlin forbid I let you pick the name with your obvious lack of taste." Hermione jumped up from her chair as the book went tumbling to the floor.
"Malfoy!" Hermione gasped as her hand went up to her heart. "Don't scare me like that you idiot!"
Draco snorted from the doorway as he took a step inside and his eyes traveled around the library. "I haven't been in here for ages. I figured I'd find you here."
Hermione raised an eyebrow. "Why were you looking for me in the first place?" Draco turned his back to her.
"I've got something to show you. Follow me," he said as he left the room. Hermione sighed as she picked up the book from the floor and pocketed it.
Hermione followed him down the hallway and past her room. They took only a few more steps forward until they reached a door right beside hers. As if to answer Hermione's questioning stare Draco spoke.
"I brought this room down from upstairs. It will be the baby's room. After he's old enough I'm going to move it back." Hermione opened her mouth to protest and Draco paid no attention as he kept talking. "He'll be here for the first few weeks, so that you'll be able to be near him and care for him. After that, I'll take over."
"MALFOY! What did I tell you about this? You aren't going to "take over" my baby's life! It's-"
"-he's," Draco corrected.
Hermione growled. "Listen," she ground out. "You aren't going to take my child away. Not only is it illegal, I would never, NEVER LET YOU!" Anger clouded over Hermione's vision as she began to sway on her feet. Almost instantly Draco's hand went up to her elbow as he opened the door in front of them and steered her inside. Hermione's mind was swimming as he lowered her down in a rocking chair and conjured a glass of water for her. She took it from his hands and downed it in a few large gulps.
"You've really ought to watch that temper of yours. Honestly, I've never met a pregnant woman who fainted as much as you have."
Hermione couldn't help but crack a sad smile. "Most pregnant women have a home and a husband and are under a lot less stress than I am."
Draco stared down at her with a strange expression before he turned and walked to the other side of the small room. After a few more moments Hermione lifted herself from the chair and let her eyes travel around her.
The room was light green in color and had dark green window coverings tied back on either side. Hermione was glad to see that the window also looked out over the garden which looked beautiful in the late afternoon glow. Under the window was a changing table which held all of the necessities (dippers, powders, and blankets). On the other side of the room was an open chest with more toys than any baby could wish for. But by far the most eye catching object in the room was the cradle, which sat in the middle of the floor.
It was made of a white wood and was spun elegantly in tight knots up the legs on all four sides. There was a beautifully hand crafted mobile hanging above it, with tiny glass moons and stars, which seemed to sparkle and glow as the light caught them. Inside, the cradle was with a soft green cotton blanket and in the far corner sat an old teddy bear, which oddly enough, tied up the whole cradle quite wonderfully.
Draco stood with one hand on it's railing as he stared down into it's empty center. Hermione, opposite side to that of Draco, was standing in a similar fashion and was also looking down at the empty covers. They stood that way for a few moments before Hermione's mouth turned up into a smile.
"Are you honestly ready to become a father?" she asked softly.
Draco's eyes did not move from the cradle. "I am," he said firmly, making Hermione raise her gaze up to him. "My father was nothing to me. He stripped me of all happiness as a child and continued to do so until his dying day. Even after that in fact. He took my mother from me shortly after his death." Hermione stared deep into his emotionless eyes. "I'm not going to be that way." He said as he clenched his jaw. "While I may not be capable of showing the kind of love and affection the child should receive, I will be here to support and care for it, financially." Hermione rolled her eyes.
"You're so full of shit, Malfoy," she said as she softly shook her head, a small smile creeping onto her mouth. Draco looked up at her with a questioning glare. "Taking care of a child "financially" isn't enough. A child needs love and affection. It needs a nurturing shoulder to cry on and someone to look up to. And that's why I can't just leave my chid with you. Because just you isn't enough. I'm sure even with the cold ruling hand of your father you had someone to turn to..." Draco's eyes softened.
Mother...
"You had someone who loved you and treated you with care, didn't you?" Hermione asked sternly. Draco's eyes went back down to the cradle.
"I did."
"So now you understand. I'm always going to be there for my child, to love and to support it until my dying day. There's nothing that you can do to change that," Hermione said softly.
They stood in silence for nearly 5 minutes before Draco found his voice. "Ahem. So, I heard you trying to think of names. I - I was thinking of them as well."
Hermione smiled. "And what names did you think of? All boy names, I'm guessing?"
"Well obviously."
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Would you like to share?" Draco stood straight as a smirk spread over his face. For some odd reason, Hermione shuddered. It had been a while since she'd seen that look on his face and it made her feel quite...strange.
"At first I was thinking something older, from my great great great grandfather's age. Something like, Gorbuton, or Sentar..."Hermione pulled a face, and Draco chuckled. "And then I thought no. So I started thinking more current names like, Norben or Gregor," Hermione smiled with approval. Draco stopped pacing and looked up into her eyes and smiled. Hermione almost gasped in shock as he did so, because it was one of the most genuine and kind smiles she had ever seen him show before. It looked beautiful on his face. "And then it came to me. I'd going to name my son," he stopped at the look on Hermione's face and sighed, "With your approval of course," he corrected himself and Hermione nodded with agreement, "Aedan."
Hermione rolled the name over and over again in her head. It - it was perfect! Aedan. She of course knew that this was an old Irish name, and Aed meaning "fire" and would imply "born of fire." She had supposed that he chose it due to their unlawful and unheard of joining to conceive the child. They were playing with fire...
"Aedan Granger," Hermione said. "I like it."
Draco snorted. "You mean Aedan Malfoy, I'm sure." Hermione narrowed her eyes.
"No. I mean Aedan Granger."
"It'll be Aedan Malfoy."
"You aren't the one who has to carry little Aedan Granger in your stomach for 9 months only to have him be BIRTHED from you."
Draco shuddered. "Yeah, thanks for the visual."
"Not to mention the way it kicks me from inside all day long," she sighed.
Draco smirked. "Yup. Definitely a Malfoy."
