Chapter 11 Spiders
Nina ran until she came to the main doors. Try as she might, they were just too heavy for her to pull them open. She did not want to stay here. Her mind was whirling. She would be punished. She knew it. The vampire had been so angry. When Uncle Pete was angry like that he would beat her.
Just as Severus and Albus reached the main entrance hall, when Nina disappeared.
“Bloody Hell. Not again.” Albus, I am getting fed of these disappearing acts of hers.”
“Did that girl just Apperate out of Hogwarts?”
“Obviously Minerva. And not for the first time. Now what do we do Albus?”
Although they didn’t know it, Nina had in fact only Apperated to just out side the doors. She had only wanted to get out. She had not thought further than that. So she ran, and kept running until she got to the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Having no idea what to do next. She headed in amongst the trees.
Back inside Hogwarts things were tense.
“Severus. You are the one who has a bond with her. You must be the one to trace her.”
He sighed. ‘It always bloody has to be me.’
He stormed out the main doors and down to the gates so he could concentrate on the bloody stupid girl and Apperate to Merlin knows where and bring her back. Again.
Nina kept moving, deeper and deeper into the Forest. It was already quite dark when she ran out of the castle, but now, under cover of the trees, it was black. She didn’t care. She spent nights in the woods when Uncle Pete had taken her hunting. She knew how to survive. The trouble was, this was not like the woods where Nina learned to hunt and trap. This was the Forbidden Forest.
Severus went back into the castle.
“Nothing Albus. Nothing at all. I cannot sense her. Not out there.”
“Kali.” Albus called the little elf.
“Yes master?” She asked as she popped out of nowhere.
“It would seem that Miss Manohel has run away again. Professor Snape cannot sense her outside of the gates which means that she is somewhere on the grounds. Can you help? We would like her back soon. Before the moon rises in its entirety.”
Kali popped out.
Severus spun his head round to the Headmaster and his face went white. “Full moon?”
“I am afraid so Severus.”
The students too were wondering what was happening now. Especially Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny.
“What did she run off for?”
“I don’t know Ron. Maybe she just fancied a walk. What do you think she ran off for?”
Hermione felt terrible enough as it was. They had not meant to upset Nina. They wanted to make her feel welcome. They liked her.
“We should go find her. See of she’s okay.”
“Harry. Dumbledor and most of the staff are out there. And Snape would just love it if we show our faces now.”
“Your right Ginny I know, but I can’t just sit here not knowing if she’s alright or not.”
MacGonagall came back into the hall and approached them.
“Misters Potter and Weasley, Miss Granger. Would you come with me please.”
The three got up and followed.
Five minutes later Ron, Harry and Hermione were up in the Headmasters office trying to explain what happened at dinner.
“We really did not mean to upset her Headmaster.”
Hermione explained. She was always the spokesperson when they were in bother.
The two boys would always stand back and leave it to her to think of some excuse or other.
“We were trying to be friends with her but she must have misunderstood. We’re just as worried as you Sir. Please can we see her. Explain things to her and then maybe we can try again.”
“Yeah! All that.”
Hermione glared at Ron.
“I have not called you here to rebuke you. I do believe that your intentions were well meant. But, unfortunately, our Miss Manohel has certain powers that far outstrip any that we have seen before and we believe that she has used those powers to disappear, so to speak.”
“Wow! We knew she could do wandless and non verbal, but what else can she do?”
“Ron. That’s not important right now. Hasn’t anybody got any idea where she’s gone? She can’t have got that far.”
“Ah, Harry. I wish that were true. Professor Snape has already deduced that she has not left the grounds. Which means that she is either in the castle somewhere, or on the grounds. Hopefully nowhere near the Forbidden Forest.”
“Well she can’t be outside since the doors are always locked at sundown. So she must be inside hiding somewhere.”
“Unfortunately, locked doors are not an obstacle to Miss Manohel.“
Hermione looked questioningly at the Headmaster.
“You see she can Apperate. And she can do so inside of Hogwarts.”
“What?” All three students spoke together.
“Precisely the problem.”
“But if she’s outside. Headmaster, it’s a full moon tonight. If she went into the Forest. Are there really werewolves in there?”
“Indeed there are Miss Granger.”
At that moment Kali appeared.
“Oh Headmaster Sir. Kali is finding Miss but Miss is sending Kali back here with her magic and Kali cannot help her.”
Albus was on his feet now.
“Where is she Kali?”
“She is deep in Forest Sir and the big spiders is sneaking up on her. I is telling the Snape she is afraid he will beat her to punish her and he is running to save her but the spiders will kill them both.”
Kali was beside herself.
“Wait a minute. Snape beats her?”
“No Mr Weasley he does not. Now we do not have time for this. Kali. Get word to Hagrid and tell him where Nina and Severus are. He is the only one who has any kind of influence with Aragog. Though in this instance….”
“We want to help Headmaster.”
Ron looked at Harry as if he was off his broom. He had met Aragog, and his family once and had no intention of meeting them again. They had got away by the skin of their wands.
In the Forest Severus was trying to find Nina.
‘Stupid stupid bloody idiotic girl. What the Hell did she think she was doing. Stupidstupidstupid.’ This was all he could think as he tried to follow the directions that the stupid bloody elf had given him.
Hearing a noise to his left he crouched down in the shadows. He could not rescue the girl if something got him first. His time spent as a Death Eater and as a spy for the Order had taught him well over the years. He knew how to stalk silently in any conditions, how to avoid capture. He waited, still and quiet to see what would appear. He hoped to Merlin it was not a bloody werewolf. It was the one thing that he could not abide. The one thing that he feared above all else. The crunching and thudding got nearer as Hagrid came into view.
“Dammit Hagrid. Could you not have made more noise. Then I might have heard you.”
“Sorry Professor. Did’n see you there. I jus got word. Come to see if I can ‘elp. Any sign yet?”
“No.” Hissed Severus.
“Oh. This way then Professor. I think know where they’ll be. I jus ope Aragog’l listen to reason ye know.”
“So do I Hagrid. So do I.”
He followed Hagrid. He had given up trying to be quiet. There was no point when you were with a half giant.
A few minutes later Hagrid suddenly stopped and Severus walked straight into the back of him.
“Oof! What is it Hagrid?”
“Over there Professor, jus behind them trees.” He said pointing across to the right. “That’s the entrance to their nest.”
“Lovely. So now what?” Severus was whispering.
Well they cant be too far away from ‘ere. I can hear ‘em chitterin.”
“They chitter?” He could not believe this.
“Well o course they chitter. Its ow they communicate wi each other. ‘Aragogs the ony one as can talk like we do. Look Professor. When we find em, I need ya ter keep out the way. They knows me see an they might not take kindly if they see a stranger. Their right nervous poor things.”
‘They’re nervous. They’re nervous. This man is round the fucking twist. However, who am I to argue?’
They had not gone much further when Hagrid stopped again.
“Stay there Professor. An keep quiet.”
Hagrid left Severus standing behind a large tree and crept off. Well, as quietly as Hagrid could creep.
After waiting for about twenty minutes that actually felt more like twenty hours to Severus, Hagrid came back.
“Professor? You there Professor?”
“Yes. Off course I’m here.” He hissed. “Where is the girl? Have you seen her? Is she alright? What have they done to her? They haven’t hurt her have they?”
All of Severus’ questions came out in a rush. He could not bare it if anything bad had happened to her. It was his fault that she had run off.
“Oh she’s there all right, I seen ‘er.”
“And?” Severus was getting exasperated.
“Well I think yer better come an look fer yersen. Only no sudden moves. An put one a them their glamour things on yer self firs. So they don know its you.”
“What? Glamour? Why the fuck would I want…“
“Please Professor. ‘S important. They’re protectin ‘er. She told ‘em you’re gonna beat ‘er for summat. Yer not are ye? She’s only a slip of a girl. Whatever she done, she don’t deserve no beatin.”
“Of course I’m not going to beat her you fool. I have never had any intention of beating her.”
“The half giant studied her for a moment. “Right then. Put the glamour on anyway. They don’t trust you an nothing will change their minds now.”
So Severus ran his wand over himself and performed a glamour charm. ‘Gods this is humiliating. Changing my appearance for a bunch of fucking arachnids. As of they can tell the difference.’
The trouble was that Severus did not know if they could tell so he wasn’t taking any chances. When he was finished, his hair was light brown and wavy, his nose was smaller and straighter, his face was fuller and his robes had become a dark grey colour.
“Is this satisfactory?” He snarled.
“That’s dead clever that is Professor. You don look anything like yerself now.”
“Lets just go shall we.”
“Right. Right. C’mon then. But don panic when yer see ‘er. It looks a lot worse then it actually is.”
“What do you mean it looks worse then it is?”
But Hagrid did not need to answer him. As they stepped to the edge of a clearing Severus thought that the ground in front of him was moving of its own accord. But when his eyes adjusted to the dim light he realised that, to his horror, it was not the ground that was moving. The whole area was literally one mass of arachnid. Hundreds of them. Maybe thousands. Severus could not tell. All he knew was that their were far too many and the sight made his skin crawl. And Merlin they were bloody enormous.
Hagrid nudged him gently on the shoulder. But Hagrid’s gentle nudge nearly knocked the Potions Master to his knees. Then he realised that Hagrid was pointing to something in the middle of the seething mass. It was a lump of something.
“What is it?”
“Its yer young lass, Nina.”
“Shit! What? What have they done to her?”
“Nuthin. They’re protectin ‘er thas all.”
“Is that what you call it? They’ve wrapped her up in a fucking cocoon or something. They are getting ready to fucking eat her.”
Severus was now getting borderline hysterical.
“No their not Professor. Look at her.
Severus squinted his eyes to try and see better as, at Hagrid’s pushing, they moved closer.
He could not believe what he was seeing. She was in what appeared to be a large spun nest. She could have climbed out of it if she wished. But she was sitting inside of it looking completely at ease. One of the spiders was slowly walking along the edge of the ‘nest’ and chattering to her. ‘Bloody Hell, they do chitter. As it was chittering and walking it would pause every so often and caress her arm or her head. And Nina. ‘What the…is she chittering back to the bloody thing. She is. And she’s stroking it.’
Severus thought he was going to pass out at the scene in front of him. Hearing an odd noise he looked up at Hagrid. ‘The Damn fools crying. I don’t believe it. I’m having a bad dream and soon I’ll wake up and all this will be gone.’ He nipped himself so hard on his thigh that he knew he would have a bruise in the morning. But the view did not change. “Now what do we do?”
“Ello Nina.” Hagrid shouted.
“Shit Hagrid. Are you trying to get us eaten?”
Hagrid ignored him. “Nina. It’s me, Hagrid. Ye remember me don ye? The Unicorns.”
Nina looked over to him from where she was sitting in her nest.
At the sound of Hagrid’s voice the spiders all gathered to form an impenetrable, protective wall around her.
Severus did not move. He dare not.
The spiders were watching Hagrid intently. Most of them ready to pounce.
Hagrid moved slowly forward. Not far. He held a hand behind him to warn the Professor to stay where he was.
“Yes I remember you Hagrid. You carried me back to the castle after. Thank you for that.”
“Thas right I did. I didn’t think you’d remember that.”
“I don’t. Poppy told me. What do you want Hagrid?”
“Well I want ye ter come back wi me. Ter the school like.”
“I cant Hagrid.”
“Corse ye can. Thas why I’m ere. Ter take yer back.”
“I’m sorry Hagrid but it’s just not going to happen. I can’t go back there again.”
“Why ever not? What makes yer think yer can’t go back?”
“I did something really bad. I¾
I didn’t mean to, but I did and it upset someone. Someone special to me.”
She could not see Severus stood back in the shadows.
“He was very angry. I can’t go back with you Hagrid.”
“Well I don know what you did but it can’t be that bad. Come back wi me now an we can sort it all out. What do ya say?”
“You don’t understand Hagrid. I’ve hurt someone so much, someone I care for deeply, I’ve hurt him so much and he is so angry. When someone gets angry like that, then they need to punish the person who hurt them. I don’t want to be beaten any more Hagrid.”
Severus was totally gob smacked. ‘She cared about him. He was special to her. And she thought he was going to beat her. But why? Because she kissed him on the cheek. In front of the whole school. Well yes, she should not have done it but even so….‘He stepped forward.
“Nina.“ His voice had not changed even if his appearance had.
Her head whipped round. She was startled. “Who are you?”
“You know who I am Nina. Please, come back with us. I promise you that I have no wish to harm you. I certainly have no intentions of beating you.”
The spiders were becoming increasingly agitated. They knew the girl was distressed. They stated to move forward.
“Shit!” He whispered. “Please Nina. It’s me, Severus. The vampire?” ‘Gods what am I saying?’ I promised you before that I wound not let anyone hurt you. Do you truly think that with what I know about you, what I have seen in your memories, after what happened the night when you met….well you know, that I would hurt you? I would never, could never do that.”
“I¾
I don’t know. Yes¾
No. Maybe. Please Professors. Just go. Leave me alone and I’ll be gone tomorrow.”
“I, we are not leaving here without you Nina. If you do not come with us I shall come to you. And if these bloody eight legged beasts eat me as I attempt to do so, then so be it.”
‘What the Fucking Shitting Hell am I doing?’
“Nina, I care about you too. I would never hurt someone I care about. Please. I¾
I love you.”
The last three words were but a whisper of a whisper. They were out before he even realised that he was going to say them. But Severus meant them with all of his heart and soul. He did not know how or when it had happened. But it had, and he knew right then, at that moment that he would die for her.
Nina had not heard his final words. But she had seen the words form on his lips. She could see it in his eyes, on his face. Though it was not his face. She could feel it.
“Severus. Hagrid.” She looked at both men in turn.
“Move to the left.”
They looked at her for a moment.
“Please. Just a few feet.”
They stepped over to the far edge of the clearing, wondering what was going to happen.
“I’m not sure about this Professor. What’s she up to?”
“Trust her Hagrid. I don’t know what will happen but we have no choice. Just believe in her.”
As they watched, Nina stood. Her arms were held out to her sides as very slowly she began to turn around. A she turned she drifted upwards as a soft pink misty glow emitted from her fingers. Still she turned and the pink glow started to spread outward over the clearing. Drifting and flowing, as its tendrils carefully twisted and twined amongst the spiders, all of which were now swaying slightly.
They began to move, parting, leaving a clear path leading from the two men to her as they settled onto the ground and went to sleep.
She stopped turning and looked towards them.. She put a finger to her lips to let them know that they must be quiet as she beckoned them over with her other hand.
The man and the half giant looked at each other for a moment then at the spiders, sleeping peacefully as if they were the most innocent creatures in the world. Then they looked back to Nina. She was smiling at them. ‘Like she smiled at me when we were with Voldemort.’ Severus thought. He stepped into the clearing, never taking his eyes from her, she never taking her eyes from him.
Hagrid watched them for just a moment and followed the Professor, picking his steps as carefully as he could. He did not want to step on and hurt one of his beloved creatures.
As Severus reached the nest, still looking at Nina who was still floating several feet above it, he felt like he was weightless. It was only when he was at eye level with her that he realised that he was floating with her. ‘What their anything this woman not do?’ he wondered.
Taking her eyes from him she then looked to Hagrid, who in turn looked very sceptical. He obviously thought she had met her match if she thought she could do the same to him.
Severus could not hold back his own smile when he saw Hagrid’s expression change to one of wonderment as he too floated up to join them.
She held out a hand for each of them to hold and nodded for them to also hold hands with each other. As they did they rose higher and higher until the spiders seemed nothing more that specks of dirt laid upon the ground below them. The pink mist had gone. Then she spoke softly.
“Solus Ipse. Tuebor. Teneo Te. Vade Mecum.”
They were back. In the school. Just like that. There was no flash or pop. They were just there. Hagrid could not under stand what had happened. Well neither could Severus actually but they did not question it.
“Yeh….right….so….S’pose I should….erm…I best be getting back. Fang’ll be wonderin’…..aye….be seein ye then.
Poor Hagrid was at a loss. He really wasn’t sure what had just happened. They watched him turn and head out.
“Thank you Hagrid.”
“Eh?”
“For coming to get me. It was very brave of you.”
Hagrid blushed. “Right, right, at, g’night then.”
“Goodnight Hagrid.”
Severus nodded to him as Nina spoke and a blushing and very confused half giant left them.
Hagrid really wasn’t sure who had saved who that night.
