The three friends walk through the halls, ever-descending deeper into the earth. As they walk, two of the girls begin to hear hisses amongst the drips and footsteps. As a response, they begin seeking out the things that are making the noises. They spy the diminutive serpents slithering through the flickering light cast by the torches.
“Harry?”
“Hmmm?” She’s not paying attention to her two friends. She’s trying, desperately, to get them back to their common room without getting lost. She hears a few snakes nearby talking about the warmth afforded to them by the common room, and starts following the two serpents.
“Did you notice the snakes down here?”
Harry looks back at her friends slightly, and smirks at them. “Maybe.”
Her friends look at each other, and then back at their friend. They’re a little worried about her and they don’t, entirely, believe that she’s just getting use to being considered normal. Hermione and Daphne look at each other, silently vowing to talk about it later.
Within minutes, they arrive at the entrance to the Common Room. Harry walks straight through, disappearing into the first year dorms to prepare everything.
Hermione and Daphne also disappear into the first year dorms, except they head to their own rooms to talk. Harriet won’t need them for a while. She can set everything up by herself. She can probably handle all of it by herself, but they know she’ll ask if she needs help.
But they need to talk now, anyway.
“There’s something wrong with Ri.”
Hermes nods. She saw it at her house as well. Harry was fine with going to the beach. She was fine with going surfing. In fact, Harry was thrilled at the prospect. However, even Hermione’s parents noticed that Harry refused to take off her clothes off with other people around. Harry always locked the door when she was in the bath, or the shower, too.
“What do you think it is?”
Daphne shrugs. “I can think of a few things, but I think we need to look at this.”
Hermione nods. She looks around the room, trying to find something to write on so they can talk about it. She doesn’t see anything and sighs, silently wishing they had a whiteboard and markers, or a mirror. Within seconds a whiteboard appears next to her with an array of markers.
Hermione gasps. “How did that get in here?”
Daphne looks at it and then turns back to Hermione. “The House Elves probably heard your request.”
“…House Elves?”
“They’re these diminutive creatures that work for Hogwarts. They cook and clean, and generally keep the castle going and running as a school.”
“What?! Are they paid?”
Daphne looks at her friend with a sigh. “Right now, I think that finding out what’s wrong with Harry is more important than freeing House Elves. I’m sure that they can take care of themselves.”
Hermione nods and picks up one of the markers. She looks at Daphne and then starts writing the symptoms while saying them out loud. “Unwilling to show body… Winces away from touch… ”
Hermione looks to Daphne, knowing the other girl sees more into the personality than she does. Daphne takes the pen and starts writing. “She avoids talking about herself, the Dursleys, or her time at their house… Always ‘fine…’ Isn’t really eating… Hiding something…”
Hermione nods. Daphne puts the cap back on the pen and sets it down. “What does this mean?”
Hermione sighs. “I don’t know.” She looks at the board and studies it. “It almost sounds like she’s been abused. But Harry would tell us, wouldn’t she?”
Daphne nods. “You would think.”
The two stop and think for a few minutes. Hermione finally walks over to one of the bookshelves. Despite it only being her first year, the bookshelf is full. Hermione moves a few books to show another row of books behind. Hermione grabs two books from the shelf and then replaces the books in front.
“I think my parents figured it out because they bought these and snuck them into my trunk.”
Hermione hands one of the books to Daphne. “How did you not notice?”
“I didn’t weigh my trunk. It was always really heavy. A few more books, and they’re not that big, are nothing.”
Daphne notes that the books are little more than pamphlets, but still sighs at her friend. She takes the book and looks at the cover.
“Child Abuse: The Symptoms and Explanations?”
Daphne looks at Hermione and raises a brow. Hermione responds with “What?” She sighs and reads the title of her own book/pamphlet. She knows that that’s what her friend wants. “Abuse: Physical, Emotional, Verbal”
Daphne raises a single brow, but shrugs and starts reading her own book. For the sake of taking less time, Daff reads it out loud. “Chapter One: Silence”
This is a symptom seen a lot. A parent, other family member,
or even a friend, could cause this kind of reaction.
So How is Billy being Abused?
Simple. Billy has family, or even friends that are
yelling at him, or punishing him, for talking too
much. To stop the punishments, Billy elects, on his
own, not to speak unless directly spoken to."
Hermione almost laughs at the way Daphne reads the “chapter.” It reminds her of old American Educational films from the 50s. Now it’s her turn to read a “chapter.”
“Chapter One: Physical Abuse.” Hermione looks at her pamphlet and realizes that its only four chapters long.
Daphne nods. Harry does some of that. She tells them, occasionally, that she was forced to do an abundance of chores. Daff motions for her friend to continue.
Which brings us to Chapter Two: Verbal Abuse."
Hermione looks to Daphne, who’s staring at her intently, waiting for her to continue.
“That’s it!!!! Harry either thinks it was all her fault,”
“Or that she was too weak to stop it! She won’t tell us because she’s afraid that we’ll be disgusted.”
Daphne nods at Hermione and gasps when she looks at her watch. “We need to get going, Hermes. We’re gonna be late for Defense if we don’t like right now!!!”
Hermione squeals in and excitement that has nothing to do with happiness before sprinting back to her bookshelf to put the books away before they can head off to class. They quickly grab their Defense books, emptying their bags of all previous books onto their beds.
They then sprint out of their rooms, down the hall, and into the common room where they find Harry just about to leave.
“Oh! I thought you guys had already left.”
Hermione and Daphne come to a sudden stop, doubling over to catch their breaths. “Nope! We actually lost track of time.”
Harry shrugs. “Well… Shall we head off then?”
The two nod, each silently conspiring to show Harry that they would never be disgusted with her. How, they have yet to figure out, but they will soon.

AN: I’m posting a shorter chapter tonight because I will be unable to post tomorrow. But, even though it’s a shorter chapter, it’s fairly important for the development of Hermione and Daphne.
I would like to mention that I made up the pamphlets. Anything in there sounding even remotely like a real pamphlet or book on child abuse is purely coincidental and is by no way on purpose. I hope you enjoy it. If I made a mistake, feel free to criticize (Criticize, not Flame!!!!) me in a review.
