Ch 11 Black unicorn
Lou, already heartbroken at having to wear the collar and anklets, now had the promise of a spanking to look forward to and it was all too much for her.
“I hope my leg never gets better.” She muttered. “Never ever, and I don’t want magic any more. I hate it and I wish I’d never met you.” She told him softly, struggling not to cry again. “I didn’t ask for all this, I just wanted to survive, I was until you came along. Why didn’t you just leave me alone?”
“Louhi, it happened whether we like it or not, we cannot change that. It is up to you now, to make the most of what is.”
“Except I’m not controlling me am I, you are.”
“Up to a point yes, but not completely. You will be given more control over your own actions as you learn to contain your powers.”
Lou couldn’t help the sarcasm that left her mouth next. “Right, so where’s the leash, then you can lead me about like a good little puppy dog, just fasten it to my collar, better yet whistle, I’ll come running. I’m house trained too you know, you wont find any puddles on the floor.”
“ENOUGH.” He roared, his eyes flashing dangerously. “Otherwise I may forget you leg needs to heal and put you over my knee right now. I suggest you settle down and think about what I have told you.”
Severus stormed from the room before he lost his temper completely, slamming the door behind him. He ordered some breakfast and went for a shower, hoping it would calm him down.
By the time he was showered, dressed and fed, he was slightly calmer, but not much and decided to go and rouse the Headmaster. Let him know Lou knew about the collar and how she reacted.
“It must have been the house elf who informed her of the collars true purpose, I did not think to say anything to them, did you?”
“No Severus, I’m afraid I did not, we were all exhausted after yesterday. Still, there is nothing we can do about it now, how is she?”
“Upset, angry, sarcastic. She had the nerve to suggest I put her on a leash and lead her about like a dog. Oh, and she also informed me she is housebroken, not to mention the filth that came from her mouth Headmaster, it really is too much.”
“It comes from having to survive alone for too long Severus, our own students resort to such language at times.”
“Not in my presence they do not, and I refuse to put up with it from a young girl, no matter her upbringing. When are we returning to number twelve, I see enough of this place during term time?”
“You may go whenever you are ready Severus, I think under the circumstances, Kreatcher would be best left until another day. I shall be along later. You and Lou are not needed at the moment.”
“You mean I have to take her back with me? Why can Lupin not bring her?”
“Remus is not returning for a while Severus, you have given him the wolfsbane I know, but he is obviously wary of being in the house with a hormonal teenage girl while he does not have full control of his ‘canis wolfis‘.”
“Marvellous, so I am stuck on my own with her, yet again.”
“Perhaps if she is well enough in a few days, you could take her to Diagon Alley for her wand, it will give her something positive to look forward to.”
“I think not Headmaster; for one, she hates all things magical; two, she does not want to be a witch; and three, I do not wish to take her to Diagon Alley or anywhere else, she is a total nightmare to be with.”
Severus turned and left the Headmasters office. The sight of those blue eyes twinkling at him was enough to worsen his already sorely tested temper.
“Get dressed, we are leaving.” He barked through the door to Lou.
“I can’t, I haven’t got any clothes.” Replied a small voice. “I’ve only got my top.”
‘Damn, he’d had to cut her trousers and underwear to remove them yesterday, since his magic was almost depleted at the time.’ “Stay where you are then, I shall reduce something of mine for now, but I want them back, so be careful with them.” He told her as he shrunk a pair of his trousers and a pair of boxers to fit her.
“Here, put these on.” He said, flinging the clothes onto her bed and leaving the room.
Lou picked up the boxers and started to giggle. “These are men’s pants.” She shouted.
“What did you expect, bloomers?”
“I dunno, I just never had you down for a boxer bloke.”
“And what is that supposed to mean?”
“Well I thought all old men wore y-fronts.”
She jumped a mile and dropped the boxers when he barged through the door. “I am not an old man.” He roared. “I am only thirty … several. As for Y-fronts, I do not even know what they are. Now get dressed and stop complaining, I wish to leave soon, and I do not understand why you are complaining about the clothing, seeing as how you dress yourself like a boy most of the time. In fact I thought you were one originally. Now hurry.”
Lou stared at the empty doorway. She’d not meant to insult him with the old man thing, how was she to know he was so touchy about his age? She also knew she dressed boyish. Living as she did, it was safer, young girls tended to attract the wrong sort of attention.
Lou pulled the boxers over one leg, but because of the bandage, she could not bend her right knee and was unable to get them over her foot. “Bugger it.” “Bobby.” She called.
As soon as the elf appeared she told him her problem.
Bobby was only too pleased to help and soon had her dressed in the boxers and itchy wool trousers Severus shrunk for her.
Severus re entered the room when Bobby told him Lou was dressed. “Here, put your coat on.” he flung the garment in her direction and waited while she put it on.
He lifted her off the bed and carried her from the dungeons, into the main hall and out the main entrance.
“Aren’t the others coming?” Lou asked.
“The Headmaster will be along later.”
“What about Mr Lupin?”
“He will not be returning.”
“Why not?”
“He feels it better to stay away while you are in the house.” It was too soon to tell her about Lupin’s lycanthropic tendencies.
Lou on the other hand was downhearted. Mr Lupin wouldn’t come back because of her, she must have been really bad for him to do that. If she didn’t behave, she’d be stuck in that house on her own because Severus might decide he didn’t want to be there either. Lou stayed quiet as he carried her through the gates and Apparated them back to the house. She didn’t complain when he placed her on the sofa and left the room. Moon appeared a few minutes later with fresh of clothes and changed them with a snap of her fingers.
When Severus came into the room with a large plate of sandwiches and a pot of tea, he noticed her change of mood.
“Well?”
Lou looked at him, slightly baffled. “Well what?”
“You are too quiet, what is wrong with you?”
“Nothing.” She answered softly.”
“I do not believe you. Much as I prefer you to keep your mouth shut, it is not your usual behaviour.”
Lou picked at the crust on her sandwich, making crumbs on her lap. “I don’t want to make you want to stay away as well. Mr Lupin wont come back because I was so bad yesterday, if you go too I’ll be stuck here on my own. I can‘t even get out the door, what will I do?”
“Foolish girl, you shall not be left to fend for yourself. Lupin’s absence is temporary. Yes he is staying away because of you, but not because of anything you have done.”
“So you won’t leave me here on my own? Why has he got to stay away then?”
“That is not your concern, suffice it to say that he will return in a week, and no, I shall not be leaving, for the moment.”
Lou stiffened when he added ‘for the moment’. That meant he probably would eventually, but maybe Mr Lupin might be back by then. She wondered why he needed to stay away, but the Professor made it clear that he wouldn’t tell her.
For the next few days, Lou kept to herself as much as she could, watching as people made their way in and out of the house, sitting alone while they had secret meetings in the kitchen, sitting alone while the Professor disappeared through a door that he told her led to the cellar. It seemed to Lou that he spent ages down there. Each afternoon he would grace her with his presence for a couple of hours so they could play chess. Lou’s heart wasn’t on the game though and she lost miserably each time. Moon fussed over her and Lou let her, never complaining and resting her leg as much as possible while feeling she would go insane with boredom. She was lonely, she didn’t used to get lonely, well not much anyway. She’d always found something to keep her occupied when she lived alone, now it was different. Lou felt like a prisoner and she didn’t know what to do about it. Screaming and shouting got her nowhere, she couldn’t make a run for it, even if her leg was okay she couldn’t leave, she supposedly had magic now but didn’t know what she was supposed to do with it, or even how to make it happen.
One afternoon Severus was about to walk into the drawing room and heard Lou inside talking to herself. Inquisitive, he stood behind the door listening. ’What in Merlin’s name is she trying to do?’ He wondered as words like ‘abracadabra‘, and ‘hokus pokus flim flam floo‘, drifted through to him. Too curious to see what she was doing, he poked his head round the door.
Lou was sat on the sofa with a set of exploding snap cards and a hat, where the hat came from he had no idea.
Lou dropped the cards into the hat and said one of those strange incantations as she waved her hand over the upturned hat. “Bugger.” She muttered when nothing happened.
“What exactly are you attempting to do?” He asked.
Her head whipped round, startled at his voice. “Nothing.” She told him, her cheeks flaming as she tipped the cards onto the table and tucked the hat under a cushion.
“And this nothing, it involves a pack of cards and a hat,? What were those ridiculous words you were uttering?”
“You listened? I was just messing, go away.”
“I take it you were attempting some kind of muggle magic?”
“So? Nothing happened anyway.”
“Why am I not surprised? Lou, magic is much more involved then a simple …‘hokus pokus’ was it? I would have thought you would have realised that at Hogwarts.”
“Yeah well, I didn’t. How am I supposed to know what to do, I’m on my own all the time and nobody tells me anything. You all have your secret meetings and you spend all your time in the cellar. No one noticed it was my birthday that day we went to the castle, meanwhile I’m left with nothing to do. I’m not used to doing nothing, I miss my job.”
Severus took the chair opposite and studied her, his elbows resting on his parted knees, hands clasped as he considered her situation. “I am sorry, I did not stop to think that you might be lonely.”
“I’m not lonely, well I am but …I don’t know.” She finished brokenly, choking back a sob. She was lonely, very lonely, but she didn’t want to admit it.
“How does your leg feel?”
“Pretty good, it hardly hurts at all.”
“Would you like to go out for a couple of hours, we could purchase your wand?”
“A wand, are you serious?”
“I would not suggest it if I were not. Call it a birthday present.”
“Wow. I mean yeah, that would be great, I mean, yes please. Thanks. A birthday present, a wand. That’s so cool. When?”
“Now, if you feel up to it, but there are conditions.”
Lou’s face fell. “Yeah, conditions.”
“I shall have to remove the anklet that keeps you here, in it’s place you shall wear another that will prevent you from moving more then two feet from my side, a proximity chain, are you agreeable?”
Her shoulders slumped. “Yeah, why not? It’s not as if I’m not used to them now.” She knew she should be excited, but the feeling was dulled at the thought of yet another constraint placed upon her. At first the thought of getting out for a while, him buying her a birthday present, it being a wand to boot ,had her keyed up, eager to go, now she was deflated, disappointed that he still didn’t trust her. Since they left the castle she’d tried her best to be good, hoping someone would notice that she was behaving and say something, but no one did and she was dispirited. In truth, she wanted to fit in, something she’d never wanted since she was six, but it hadn’t worked, she wasn’t going to fit in wherever she was.
Lou let him remove the cuff and replace it with another. This one wasn’t so bad, it took the form of a fine chain and looked pretty, not that she was into pretty.
Lou was not a girly girl, her lifestyle had never been conclusive to being that way. She wasn’t exactly a tomboy either, but acted boyish for her own self preservation.
“It doesn’t look so bad.” She told him. The other one, the one that told him where she was at all times, was thick and noticeable, like the one that kept her here. “D …do I need to keep this on? If I can’t leave your side, you’ll know where I am.”
Severus gave her a look that said, ‘It stays’.
“I just wondered, everyone will see it, will they know what it is?”
“More than likely, I can dissolution it for you if you prefer.”
“So no one will know, yes please.”
A second later she could feel the anklet, but it was invisible, only a faint shimmer when she moved her leg, alerting anyone to it’s presence. Lou determined she would take tiny steps while they were out, that way it wouldn’t shimmer so much and nobody would see it.
Severus took her to the small green at the end of the street and Apparated them to the Leaky Cauldron.
Lou had never seen anywhere like this place before. “Where are we?”
“The Leaky Cauldron, it is a passing place that allows us to access Diagon Alley. We may stop in later for a bite of supper if you behave.”
“Right. What’s a passing place?”
“You will see.” He told her, making his way to the back of the inn. Lou followed. She could walk, but not too fast and she had a noticeable limp when she did. She tried to take small steps, but this aroused the curiosity of the patrons who were there and they instinctively looked down in the direction of her feet to see what was wrong with her. Most noticed the small shimmer at her ankle, recognising it for what it was. Because the weather was so warm, she was in a t shirt and she realised that several of them were also staring curiously at her collar. She hobbled quickly after the Potions Master, feeling very self conscious.
When he led her into a small back yard and closed the door she was baffled. “Why are we in the yard?”
Instead of answering, Severus tapped a series of bricks on the wall opposite.
“Fu …lippin heck!” Lou exclaimed, earning herself a scowl from the Professor. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to, I just didn’t expect …that.” She pointed at the archway that appeared before them.
“Yes, well mind that mouth of yours and we should do fine. Come along.”
He stepped through the archway and Lou, not quite keeping up with him, felt a pull in her midriff and lurched through after him.
“Oof.” She bumped into Severus, hitting her nose on his elbow, her leg smarting at been suddenly stamped on the ground.
“Do keep up, I do not wish to be bumped every time you decide to dawdle.”
“I didn’t do it on purpose, it’s that thingy what did it.”
“Had you followed me through, it would not have happened. As soon as he took another step, Lou put her hand in his.
Severus yanked his hand from hers. “What do you think you are doing?”
“Nothing, I just wanted to …I thought …”
“I do not hold hands, especially in public places.”
“Sorry.” She told him, feeling dejected. She’d not meant anything by it, she felt insecure here, the place was very strange and she didn’t want to get yanked like that again.
She bit her bottom lip and lowered her eyes to the ground, embarrassed that she’d thought he wouldn’t mind her holding on to him.
Other people held hands, she’d seen them do it in her world, and here too she could see parents holding hands with their kids and couples too holding hands. Lou watched them all as she limped after Severus, at least he’d slowed his pace a bit so she could keep up. She supposed she looked scruffy next to him, no wonder he didn’t like her touching him. She had her money on her, over thirty pounds. Maybe they would see a shop that sold clothes cheaply and she could get something smart for not much money.
“Are they owl’s?” She asked, as the passed Owlet’s Owl Emporium.
“No, they are canary’s.”
She didn’t ask any more questions, instead she continued to follow him down the street, trying not to notice anything unusual. If she saw nothing, she wouldn’t be curious.
Severus stopped outside a small shop, tucked back between several larger buildings.
Lou looked up, Ollivander’s. Makers of fine wands since, “382 BC? You have to be kidding me.” She laughed.
I beg your pardon?”
“The date, it says 382 BC. It’s false advertising, or something.”
“Not at all, Ollivander’s have indeed been making wands since that date.”
“Bloo ..imey.”
Severus was about to say something, then changed his mind, she was at least trying to stop herself from swearing now, he decided to let it go.
“Mr Ollivander.” Severus greeted the man in the shop.
“Professor Snape, how nice to see you, I take it the young lady requires a wand?”
“She does indeed.” Severus turned to Lou. “Miss Black, step forward and allow Mr Ollivander to take your measurements.”
Lou was bewildered. ‘Measurements, for a piece of wood? And why did he call her Miss Black, he knew she hated it.’
“Miss Black did you say Professor? Any relation to …?”
“It is irrelevant to her requirements Mr Ollivander, if you would be so kind.” He gave the wand maker a half sneer that clearly said no further information would be given.
“Of course, Professor.”
“Now young lady, hold out your wand arm please.”
Lou held out her right arm, assuming that would be the one she would use. The man produced a tape measure and it began moving about her independently of Mr Ollivander. Even her nose was measured and after five minutes she batted it away, not sure what the distance between her ears would have on the type of wand she would get.
“Your birthday, what month does it fall in?”
“July 31st. This is my birthday present.” She told him.
“Really? A little late.”
“Yeah well we had to go to Hog …”
“Louhi.” Severus snapped.
Her head snapped round and he gave her the briefest shake of his head.
“We were busy.” She mumble to Mr Ollivander.
“Ah, a big party I take it, with all your friends, how wonderful. Now lets see what we have for you, Holly, with a pinewood handle I think.”
