Investigation
Mundanes
and Muggles and what constitutes magic
Sinestra
and OMC
Agent Hayden didn’t believe in
coincidences. Jack Corey’s disappearance on the same night that the Norwood’s were attacked was entirely too much to believe. He made sure that he was the
one sent to interview the potential widow. He found Sally to be holding up
well considering or perhaps because she had three children, one just a few
weeks old.
“At least he got to see little
Alain before . . .” she faltered.
“Mrs. Corey, there’s hope that
your husband is alive. He may not be able to contact you.
“You don’t know Jack,” she
sobbed, then smiled in spite of her grief; “I mean you don’t know my husband.
He was more of a mother-hen than I’ll ever be. Always had to know where I and
the children were and what we were doing all the time. He even had cameras set
up on his computer just so he could keep an eye on the house. He worked on the
computer at home, y’know, telecommuting.”
“Mrs. Corey, do his cameras
record?”
She looked astounded, “Of course
they do! Why didn’t I think of it before?”
And she ran to his office and
logged on using her husband’s information.
“It runs on a 48 hour loop,
anything older than that gets saved to the hard drive.”
“Mrs. Corey, may I have some of
my people come in and look at this? I’m afraid I’m not quite up on the
techno-stuff.”
“Please,” she looked hopeful,
“anything to help.”
He called for the computer
forensic people to show up. Meanwhile he wandered around the office. Jack’s
self-congratulatory wall had a number of computer certifications, two college
degrees and a lot of photos and trophies from weight-lifting competitions. He
couldn’t help but notice that Mrs. Corey was no slouch in that department
either.
“Mr. Corey looks very fit.” He
mentioned conversationally.
“Fitness is Jack’s obsession,
well, that and the kids. You won’t find white sugar or refined flower or
trans-fatty anything in this house. It was like a religion to him, the first
church of fitness.” She looked horrified that she had been referring to Jack
in the past tense all day. What if she had jinxed it by admitting that
he could really be gone?”
The three tech boys came over
about fifteen minutes later. Jerome, Larry and Moses Horowitz were brothers
and geeks of the first magnitude; mundane consultants who’d worked with Hayden
before. They did a quick scan for computer traps. Many investigations had
been sabotaged by a ham-handed approach to pulling data off a disk. They had
up loaded the cameras’ memory, and all the stored data in less than ten
minutes, then proceeded to run twelve videos simultaneously on their three
laptops. Each laptop screen had been quartered so that they could accommodate
four cameras at a time on each computer.
“Color cameras?”
“Yep, and about 5 Mega pixels
each; this man loves his toys.”
“What time was the Code 1 (home
invasion)?
“Last night around 2100”
The tech-trio simultaneously
tapped their keyboards and the scenes on the screens changed to twilight.
“Whoa,” one of the techs
exclaimed.
They all stopped tapping their
keyboards as Larry; the one who had exclaimed rewound one of his camera views
and replayed on full screen.
“There must be a break in the
recording, maybe a power sag or something.”
“Why?” asked Hayden.
“Watch”
As they all watched the screens
three men suddenly appeared in the back yard as if they had instantly appeared
there. Of course, Hayden recognized apparation, but the mundanes were content
with their ‘glitch’ explanation. The men made a bee line for the Norwood’s side door when they stopped and turned to see someone else enter the view, Jack
could be easily recognized even from the back, his muscles looking very
intimidating. He got to within an easy arms reach when one of the men drew
something out of his long dark overcoat.
“Please,” thought Hayden, “not
green, not the killing curse.”
“The red beam struck Jack’s chest
and he fell over, one of the other men pointed his ‘weapon’ at the prone figure
and it disappeared.
“Boys,” said Moses resignedly,
“we’re about to have one of those annoying gaps in our memories.”
“Fraid so,” agreed Hayden as he
removed his wand from his jacket pocket.
A few minutes later Hayden was in
the Corey’s yard looking for something, anything that might give a clue to what
Jack had been transfigured into. He could detect a faint magical signature but
not enough to get a read. It was something small, presumably animal and
something that the Death Eaters had found amusing. Hayden shuddered as he recalled
the husband who had been transfigured by his girlfriend into a mouse that got
trapped and killed by his wife trying to get into his own bedroom. Lesson one,
never piss off a witch.
When he went back into the house
the Horowitz brothers had finished their preliminary work and were packing up
to go home where they would upload the contents of the hard-drive for further
investigation.
Sally Corey was left with the
oddest feeling when Agent Hayden had begged her to call him if she saw unusual
animal behavior of any kind, and not to do anything to the animal – just call
him.
“What kind of animal?”
“It might be a rodent, or even an
insect.”
“I can’t squash a bug in my own
kitchen?”
Hayden went pale, “Mrs. Corey,
have you squashed any bugs in the past 24 hours?”
“No, but I can’t speak for the
kids.”
“Call them.”
Patrick and Trish definitely
thought the nice man was weird, but promised not to mess with any strange
animals or bugs before calling him because the odd animal behavior could lead
the police to their daddy.
Five days later an emaciated
lizard was found trying to get into the kitchen window, odd because there were
no geckos in the Salem area. Agent Hayden surreptitiously stunned the little
green reptile and placed it gently in his pocket. When he got near the North Shore Medical Center he put in a call for the Emergency Trauma unit to be ready,
the magical healers who worked undetected, side by side with the mundane
doctors and nurses were there to take care of magical ailments.
When Jack was restored to his
human self he had unpleasant dreams of wandering the yard during the night
trying to not get eaten by toads and bats and wanting to eat bugs, but bugs
aren’t good for you so he just went without then he remembered crawling up the
side of his house and looking in the window of the kitchen while Sally and the
kids were sitting around the kitchen table and he couldn’t get them to see or
hear him.
Weird dream.
Weirder still was when the doctor
broke off a huge piece of dark chocolate and made sure he’d eaten the whole
thing before he was allowed to go home.
It was delicious.

Author’s note: some of you will remember the
Horowitz brothers by their professional names, Curley, Larry and Moe.
One more chapter to go, with lots of smutty
goodness, and unless there’s a groundswell of support for the story I’ll be putting
this one to bed.
Dark chocolate for me, the darker the better
– with little bits of cocoa bean still in the mix. . .
