Chapter 11
“Aaaahh, dammit, why am I always running late at the worst
possible time!?” Harry bellowed, exasperated, as he ducked and
weaved his trolly through the traffic at the train station. More
than a few muggles shot curses and obscene gestures at him.
“I told you it was a bad idea,” Severus answered,
referring to the shower they'd shared that morning and what always
happened when they shared a shower. He shot a few apologetic glances
over his shoulder, but people seemed to get more of a 'glare of doom'
impression from them so he gave up as he trailed after Harry toward
Platform 9 ¾.
“Yeah, but...” Harry stuck out his lower lip to sulk a
bit. “It's the last one we'll probably get to share for quite
a while.” And that sulking, whiny tone had been the reason
Severus had caved in in spite of his better judgment in the first
place.
“Just remind me of this moment the next time you have a stupid
idea,” Severus griped in return, but Harry disappeared beyond
the barrier without giving a reply. Severus sighed and pushed right
along through behind him. “...convenient way to dodge a
conversation,” he griped, adjusting his trolly. It was more
heavily laden than Harry's, if only because of the sheer number of
texts he didn't want to leave behind at Grimauld Place. He thought
if he could compare some of them to what was in the school library,
he would definitely be able to make some headway on his memory
problem, which – in spite of what the healers told him (and
what matters they were careful to avoid) – was only getting
worse as time wore on, not better. He was having trouble retaining
information. There just wasn't room in his adolescent mind for all
the jumble of memories surfacing and ordinary learning at the same
time. It was intensely frustrating. Every time he forgot a spell or
potion he'd been studying he felt stupid. His ability to absorb
information had always been the one thing he had going for him. Now
at sixteen he was starting to feel senile. Besides that, he was sure
all the wanking and blow jobs must be killing off brain cells
by now...not that he'd trade either for the world...
He pinched the bridge of his nose to ward off the overflow of
thoughts.
“Another headache?” Harry asked, taking Severus' trolly
for him and pushing it up onto the train like a proper gentleman.
“You've been getting those a lot, lately.” He wasn't
stupid enough to not know there was something to it, but he wasn't
stupid enough to ask, either. Anything that had to do with healers,
St. Mungo's, or his health in general always put Severus in a vicious
mood.
“It will pass soon enough,” Severus answered as he
climbed onto the train. “It's just...”
“The influx of information from your memories, I know,”
Harry sighed. “So you've been telling me all month.”
Except that the memories didn't seem to be coming any faster than
they ever had, and yet the headaches were getting worse. He settled
them into an empty car, hoping it would stay that way so Severus
would be able to rest. Resting seemed to help. He tugged Severus
into the seat next to him before he got any funny ideas about sitting
on the other side, and pressed the dark-eyed boy's head against his
shoulder. “Rest. I'll wake you when we get there.”
“Harry,” Severus protested with an embarrassed whine.
“Embarrassed to be seen with me?” Harry quipped, a little
smirk playing across his lips.
“Of course not, but...”
“No,” Harry said. “I'm not going to pretend this
past summer never happened. You'll just have to get used to hexing
anyone who dares to call you a fag, a poof, or any other such thing.”
The sharp words were comforting. It made Severus feel like, just
maybe, what was between them really was a relationship. It
was easy to call it that when you were alone in a house together, but
when brought out into the light of day he had expected Harry would
want to be more discreet. He should have known better. Harry
wouldn't know what discreet was if it came up to him wearing a neon
sign and slapped him upside the head, which, of course, wouldn't be
very discreet at all, now would it?
Severus sighed and relaxed against his boyfriend's shoulder. In
spite of all the nudity and snogging, it was the first time he'd
really felt as if they were dating since that night at the
muggle's Fair. The difference was probably that they weren't alone
anymore. Anyone could walk by and see them curled up together on the
train. The fact that Harry didn't seem to care only made it all the
more wonderful. He dozed off rather quickly. When he woke, there
was a tense, quiet conversation going on above him so he pretended to
continue sleeping.
“I'm just saying you've put it off long enough,” Ron
griped.
“It's not as if I've done it on purpose. I tried to get in
touch with her, but we just couldn't get our schedules to match,”
Harry defended himself, careful to keep his voice low and not disturb
the young man resting against him. “We thought we'd be able to
get together last week, but the only time she had available was the
same time as Severus' appointment at St. Mungo's. I had to be
there.”
“They don't even let you in the room,” Ron blanketed.
“He wouldn't have known if you stayed the whole time or not.”
“I would know,” Harry answered tightly. “Of course
I wanted to get this cleared up before we all came back to school,
but it just wasn't possible. I'm going to see her right away, after
dinner, probably, unless she's busy.”
“And what about Snape?” Hermione asked. “His
memories are coming back, right?”
“...not quickly enough. He keeps getting these headaches,”
Harry sighed softly. “I think it's a lot worse for him than
he's letting on.”
Severus felt the hand gently caressing his hair, but couldn't take
much comfort in it when he was wondering who 'she' was. Did Harry
already have someone? But what did that make him? Not a proper
boyfriend, surely... 'You're jumping to conclusions, Severus.
Wait until you have all the facts.'
“That's not what I'm talking about,” Hermione sighed.
“Harry, haven't you thought about it at all? What's going to
happen when he remembers how much he hated you?”
Severus felt Harry tense beneath him. 'I hated him? But why? He's
so nice to me. Is that just an act? Is he just trying to make up for
something he did that I can't remember?'
Harry was about to answer, but felt Severus shift and whatever he was
about to say fell silent. Severus cursed the bit of clumsiness that
had made him inhale too sharply and pretended to rouse as if he
hadn't heard anything and blinked a few times, sitting up. “...are
we almost there?” he asked, pulling away from Harry to sit up
properly.
“Pretty soon,” Harry answered. “You remember Ron
and Hermione, right?”
“More or less,” Severus answered quietly. Ron looked
angry at him over something. Hermione just looked worried. He knew
his health had nothing to do with the expression. And Harry? Harry
looked like a guilty party who'd just been caught in the act. What
act, exactly, was something Severus was going to have to figure out.
“Has your headache gone?” Harry asked.
“More or less,” Severus answered again, and Harry, for
the life of him, had no idea what he'd done to piss his boyfriend
off.
