After the heart to heart with Harry, Ron had tried to write a letter
to Snape several times. He failed all of them. One was too
desperate, the next too disinterested. He knew he was shite at
heart-wrenching drama, but he was even worse at letters than he was
at talking things out. All he was sure of was that he, in fact,
didn't know why things had to be different now that they were home
again, and that seemed reason enough to do something about it.
So he was rather surprised when, about a week before Christmas, an
owl flew by and dropped a letter on his desk that was written in
unmistakably precise handwriting. His stomach flopped and he glanced
around to be certain no one was looking before tearing it open. The
only thing remarkable about the letter was its brevity, really. It
simply read:
'Ronald Weasley,
I will be in London this evening taking care of a few mundane
chores. Should you so desire, I expect to arrive at the Leaky
Cauldron for dinner at approximately 7 this evening.
Severus Snape'
Ron read between the lines. Snape wanted to see him. He hoped it
wasn't to rant about the horrid way they were twisting his awkward
stumblings every time the reporters found him, and because the man
was still genuinely interested in him, but he refused to get his
hopes up.
Even so, he arrived early and spent a bit of time in the restroom
freshening up as best he could. Luckily, he'd spent the better part
of the day doing paperwork so he wasn't too windblown, and he did the
best he could with the wrinkles in his shirt and trousers. He peeked
out of the restroom cautiously, and yep, there he was. Snape was
sitting stiffly with his peripheral vision trained on the door. That
worked for Ron – it meant he was directly behind Severus, and
wouldn't be seen until he got much closer. He watched a moment,
feeling his stomach tie up in knots and tiny wings flutter inside his
chest. He could imagine sliding up behind him and pressing a kiss to
the shell of the man's ear. He also imagined Snape would kill him if
he did so – but what a wonderful way to die.
He didn't risk it. He walked over as quietly as he could and slid
into the seat across from Severus. He noted the quirked brow –
Severus had been outsmarted. He'd been watching the door, and Ron
had come from the opposite direction.
“Hey,” Ron said awkwardly.
Snape acknowledged him with a slight nod. He wondered if Severus had
any more idea than he did about what to say. “I imagine you've
seen the Prophet,” Snape started with.
Ron answered with a dour nod. “Yeah, need to mind their own
bloody business.” He sighed and offered a weak smile. “But
I guess there would be no news if they did.”
“I took the liberty of ordering for us,” Snape answered
as if it wasn't a complete change in subject.
Ron smirked. “That confident I would come, huh?”
“We left things off rather...”
“Not at all?” Ron offered.
“To put it gracelessly, yes,” Severus replied. “And
now, with the Prophet, I felt we should discuss matters in order to
prevent miscommunications.”
In other words, Snape wanted to know where they actually stood,
because he didn't want them to be telling the papers two different
things. Ron took a huge risk. He swallowed a lump in his throat and
asked, “What are you doing for the holidays?”
Snape blinked at the non-sequiter. “I don't see what that has
to do with anything.”
“Well,” Ron fidgeted a bit. “I thought, maybe if
you weren't doing anything...nah, never mind, you'd hate it. Too many
people.”
“Ron...” Severus whispered in awe. “Are you asking
me to join you and your family for the holidays?”
“Sort of?” Ron asked. “You can forget I asked. I
mean, I just thought, you know.”
Snape didn't answer right away. He was honestly too shocked to get
his mind around it. Even now, a world away from their tiny hotel
room and their shared bed, the handsome young Weasley wanted him
around? And he actually looked as though he thought Snape was the
one more likely to reject him than the other way around! He'd
thought of almost nothing but Ron since they returned home again. He
was lonely, and his bed was cold at night, and he had grown to loathe
these things.
Their food was put in front of them and they began to eat in silence
to fill the awkward gap in their dialogue. The atmosphere was heavy
though, and Ron was kicking himself for being too forward.
“Should I bring something?” Severus asked eventually.
“Sorry, what?”
“A dish, Ron, or a gift? It is the traditional practice to
bring something to one's host at a party.”
Ron's fork clattered to the plate. “Oh! I...nah, it's cool.
Mum always cooks enough for an army. You're sure? I mean, it gets a
bit...”
“I suppose that depends on you. You do understand, surely,
that spending the holidays with your family means far more than
everything we have done together up to this point.”
Ron smirked. “I'm not completely daft, you know. And I know
it's probably not really your idea of a good time. What with the
crowds, and Harry and all the little ones. You don't have to feel
obligated or anything. I mean, it'd be great, but...”
Severus rose from his seat, leaned over the table and planted a kiss
on Ron's mouth to silence him. It was a daring and blatant move.
They were in a public place, but as cute as Ron's uncertain rambling
was, he didn't want to listen to them through their entire meal.
“Uhh...” Ron stumbled when the kiss broke.
“I will bring a bottle of wine,” Severus purred as he sat
down. “I have a mild interest in such things. I will pick
something appropriate to the occasion.”
“I...right,” Ron blushed. “I'll er, I'll owl you
the details? Or I can pick you up?”
“I live a bit out of the way,” Severus answered. “It
might be more convenient if I spent Christmas Eve at your apartment
and we went together from there.”
“My place? Christmas eve?” Ron turned rather red and his
pulse raced. This was going way better than he could have imagined.
“Yeah, absolutely! Say, uh...”
“Dinner,” Snape said. “I will arrive at
approximately 4 pm with the groceries. We will divide kitchen
duties.”
Ron grinned. Oh, that sounded great, bustling about the kitchen
cooking a meal from scratch together. Almost romantic, but without
being too girly. He reached across the table for Snape's hand and
was relieved when the older man turned his palm up to accommodate
him.
They ate in silence for a while, but this one far more comfortable,
before Ron asked, “So, what did you have to do in the Alley?”
“I told you already. Errands,” Snape answered as he
lowered his teacup.
“What kind of errands?”
“Does it matter?”
Ron grinned. “You didn't have any errands, did you?”
“Of course I did,” Severus defended.
“Then why won't you tell me what they were?”
“I went to the apothecary if you must know,” Snape lied.
“Which one?”
“Inquisitive, aren't you?”
“What time?” Ron prodded playfully, resting his chin in
his hands.
“You...”
“It's cool,” Ron said. “I really wanted to see
you, too.”

When he saw their lip lock on the front cover of the Daily Prophet
the next morning, Ron laughed. He figured he couldn't exactly be
angry with the paper if what they were reporting was true.
'Ronald Weasley!'
Ron jumped and almost spilled his morning coffee all over himself
when his mother's voice came out of the fire. “Mum?” Oh.
Crap. She must have seen the paper. She probably ignored that first
photo figuring it was just the usual crap the Prophet spewed out, but
a picture spoke a thousand words, and there was no arguing with that
kiss. He moved to kneel in front of the fire. “Er, so, what's
up?”
“When are you bringing him over for dinner?” Molly asked,
cutting right to the chase.
“Mum!” he whined.
“Don't you 'mum!' me! You know full well if one of my boys is
seeing someone, I want to meet them!”
“But you've known Snape for years!”
“Never you mind that. The context is completely different.
Then he was your professor and a member of the Order. Now he's your
other half!”
“Whoa, now hang on a second,
we're not that far
along yet!” Ron declared. “He's coming for Christmas, so
just lay off until then, would you?”
It was a bit hard to tell in a fire call, but Ron could recognize his
mother's 'knowing' expression from several miles away. “Mum,
I've got to get to work,” he said to cut the conversation
short. He did, but he at least had time to finish his coffee and the
paper first.
“Yes yes, of course dear.” She made a kissy noise, which
crackled as the fire shifted, and disappeared.
Ron sat back and sighed, but then he
smiled. After all, Snape had met his family and agreed to spend the
holidays with him anyway. 'He must really
fancy me.' His smile broadened
to a goofy grin which he was unable to wipe off of his face for the
rest of the day.
