A/N I am not sure how many people have gone back and reread the entire story after my last update. If you haven't I would suggest that you do before reading this chapter. I have made some very big changes to previous chapters, especially regarding the rest of the pack. The problem is that when I start writing I realise that parts of the story I had imagined weren't actually written in. For this chapter I realised that I had given very little detail on Fenir's relationship with Claw or in fact any details about the doms at all. I may have to go back again and do another edit but I will see how it goes.
The pack had already begun to emerge from their huts as Fenir walked through the village with his newborn children. They were unable to resist the urge to look upon the two pups who were currently making their presence known by screaming at the top of their small lungs. The village itself was in chaos after the sudden storm, debris covered the floor and the two remaining tents had blown down during the storm. The biggest, belonging to the unmated doms, had taken the most damage and was probably unrepairable. All the huts seemed to be still standing but there were a couple, his own included, that would need some repairs.
He looked down at the red faced bundle in his arms. The child had not stopped screaming since they had left the hut. His face was now scarlet and creased as it gulped down a lungful of air before continuing his wails. Fenir walked through the village with a determination, striding in time with his personal mantra 'all they need is nourishment' he couldn't believe that their screaming was asking for anything else. Once they were fed they would calm down and his children would be ok.
Fenir moved towards the meeting circle, checking quickly that Tempar was following close behind with his other child. She was slightly further behind than he would have liked but it was clear that her attention was not on him, but instead on the small bundle of noise she was carrying. The younger twin was perhaps noisier than the one he held. Tempar was rocking him slowly whilst at the same time watching him like he was a strange apparition that she couldn't quite believe. Namile suddenly appeared at his shoulder, sensing his need for support. Namile had always been there for him, in her own way, since they were pups. Her devotion to him was complete, and occasionally bordering on obsession. She had clung to her pack with ruthlessness when her first child had been taken, fighting tooth and nail to protect it, clinging to the only family she had left. He had seen her rip Aurors to shreds with a gleam in her eyes to protect her pack and now there were so few left from that original pack she clung even tighter to those she had left.
"We need to get them to Lemmy." Fenir said, partly to Namile but mostly to himself, repeating his mantra like the words held a power that would quiet his fears.. Namile nodded and steered him towards Lemmy and Matty's hut. They had taken shelter from the storm and had yet to emerge. The hut seemed to be mostly undamaged with only slight damaged to the window and roof, but when no one came out to meet them Fenir became worried that something else had happened to the small familr. Namile held open the door for him and Tempar.
The hut was exceedingly dark, with only one small candle lit in the far corner, illuminating Lemmy, Matty and their three month old child Wren. She was a true beauty, with big brown eyes, soft auburn hair and a soft almond shaped face. The three of them were huddled in the corner in a pile, Lemmy and Wren being comforted by Matty. Lemmy was obviously the most shaken, tears streaking his face, as he clung to the small Wren like a life line. The family did not look up, even though the screaming of the twins reverberated off the walls, amplifying the sound.
"Lemmy," Fenir waited for a response but received none. "they need feeding, Lemmy, I…" Fenir's voice was soft and stuttering but at the same time commanding, heard clearly even over the din. Matty's head shot up at the order, his eyes filled with anger, and he pulled his mate and child closer to him. He almost looked feral, like he was injured and needed to protect himself. "Please, Lemmy." Fenir's entreaty was answered as Lemmy's head shot up. Gone was the docile, sweet sub he knew, instead there was nothing but anger and hatred in his face.
"You want to know what those children need?! Those children are screaming for their mother! That is what they want! How can you listen to them scream?! Are you so heartless that you can hear that and not care?! You are dead from the head down!" Only his firm grasp on Wren kept him on the floor as his anger was let loose. Fenir was shocked. He grasped at his child, pulling him closer to his chest, whilst pulling himself backwards towards his second child in Tempar's arms.
Namile strode forward, pushing past him, and suddenly slapped Lemmy across the face, clipping Wren slightly as she came across. The hut was thrown into chaos as Matty threw himself upwards a snarl on his lips, catching Namile by the throat and holding her up of the ground. Lemmy barely noticed Matty's leave as he held Wren, who was adding her own screams to the already noisy twins, protectively against his chest, comforting her.
Fenir pulled his own child closer to him, protecting him from the fight. "Matty! Put Namile down!" Matty's stance did not change, despite his Alpha's order. "Matty!" Fenir barked again, his voice becoming more wolf like. The child in his arms wailed louder, as if to remind everyone that he was still there despite the commotion going on around him.
Matty's lips came down from their snarl. "If you ever touch my mate again no one will be able to stop me from ripping you to shreds." He lowered Namile back to the floor and let go abruptly, letting her fall to the floor. He turned round quickly to tend to his small family.
Namile gasped harshly to regain her breath. "You'll pay, Matty! I will make sure you pay!" She coughed out as she robbed her throat to sooth the pain. Matty didn't even turn around to acknowledge her threat, instead tending to Wren's cheek which was starting to purple slightly.
Fenir was shocked and appalled by what he was seeing in front of him. How had his pack broken so throughly? What had caused friends and family to turn so vehemently against each other? "Namile, I think you'd better go."
She turned to her Alpha with a protest already on her lips but it died quickly as she saw the look on Fenir's face, everything about him enforcing his command. She staggered quickly to her feet and pushed past to the door.
Fenir looked over to the family on the floor. Wren had stopped crying but was still being soothed by her parents. Lemmy passed her over to Matty with a final kiss to her ruddy forehead, and rose shakily to his feet.
"Give me the children." His voice was low and croaky, betraying his emotions keenly. Fenir handed over the first child and motioned for Tempar to do the same. The twins quietened down a little as they were passed across, whether from exhaustion or something else Fenir couldn't tell. Lemmy positioned himself on the small bed he had used during the last few months of his pregnancy and attempted to arrange the two pups so they could be fed at the same time. With a little struggling they were able to both latch on to Lemmy's still ample bosom and feed successfully. Fenir crouched down low on the floor next to Lemmy, watching his sons avidly, allowing himself to marvel at them for the first time since their birth. Their faces were both still very red and crinkly but they didn't look like they were identical. The first born had a lot of dark hair whereas the younger one was lighter, more like his own hair colour.
Suddenly the second child unlatched and began to cry again, his arms starching outwards in any direction he could reach. Lemmy tried to quiet him again, rocking him and cooing but it didn't work. Fenir reached over to try to add his own calming motions to Lemmy's, running his fingers through the small pup's hair, but was rewarded by the screaming becoming worse so he backed off quickly. The elder twin, disturbed by his brother's cries, also let the nipple fall from his lips but instead of mirroring his younger sibling the small child grabbed at one of flailing arms of his brother. Fenir and Lemmy watched anxiously as the younger of the two cut off his cries abruptly and the two boys bought themselves together on Lemmy's lap, curled themselves around each other and drifted off to sleep.
Fenir was in awe of the perfection of his children as their breathing calmed. "Thank you, Lemmy." His voice was quiet and seemed all the quieter for the lack of screaming children. Lemmy looked up from the children and into Fenir's eyes.
"This isn't over. There is going to be a lot of heartbreak for you, them and the pack if you don't take them back to their mother now. The damage you have caused to them may be repairable."
"You know I can't. He needs to be punished… The others would never allow it. I chose this course and I must stick to it."
"Then you are truly doomed, Fenir Greyback, and this pack will be doomed as well. No good can ever come from this." Lemmy looked down at the pups, his eyes softening and a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "You are lucky. They at least have each other. It would have been a lot worse without someone who shares the bond." Fenir nodded, silently acknowledging what he could see to be the truth of his words. Lemmy's words were almost felt bewitching, like a spell weaving over him, calming him. The change in Lemmy since he had given birth was remarkable. Gone was the innocent sub, who would placate others at all costs, now a strong confident mother stood in front of him, someone who understood more about the instincts of the wolf than he, the alpha of his pack, ever would. “Tempar?” The spell over him was broken and Fenir turned quickly, he had forgotten that they were not alone. Tempar moved forward. “Could you please go and find one of the large baskets we use for gathering berries?” Tempar nodded and left quickly to retrieve said basket. Tempar was acting strangely as well. Normally she was very much like Namile, suborn but prideful of the pack, in fact they were great friends, but at the moment she was almost silent, deferring to Lemmy in a way he had never seen before.
Fenir looked up from his children as Matty came over to them with Wren. Wren climbed up on the bed with her mother and looked down at the sleeping children. She had a quizzical look on her face, not really understand why her mother was tending to the two loud things that had invaded their hut. Matty watched on from a slight distance, smiling at his daughter’s expression.
“You know Claw is not going to be happy with you.” Fenir said, directing his statement to Matty but still watching his children.
“I would do it again. Claw can do his worse. If Namile lays another hand on Lemmy we will be gone, pups or not.” Matty's voice betrayed no emotion or difficultly with his decision. Fenir looked up mildly shocked, he would have possibly been more suprised if he had any energy left. Lemmy and Matty had joined their pack during the war, a newly mated couple from a destroyed pack. To leave the pack that had taken them in, especially with a young pup was unheard off. "I have to look after Lemmy and Wren and if i can no longer do that in this pack then so be it." Fenir gave a small nod of sadness, he understood Namile wasn't the only person to have hurt their family today, their Alpha had hurt them as well, by asking Lemmy to do this.
“I’m sorry it has to be you, Lemmy. If there had been anyone else...”
“Then you would have given the pups to another to nurse but you still would have committed the crime.”
Tempar returned with the basket. She had cleared out some of the unfinished weave and lined the bottom of the basket with some soft fawn hide. She placed the basket by Lemmy’s side and then backed away to the door.
Lemmy picked up the pups from his lap, careful to not jolt them or move them apart, and tucked them into the basket. “You will need to bring them to me every three hours for feeding for the first few weeks. We will hopefully be able to ween them in about two months.” He tucked another fur around the sleeping children and picked it up by the handle and slipped his second hand underneath. “Hold the basket like this and be careful not to jostle it.”
Fenir took the basket from him and bowed his head slightly. “Thank you, Lemmy.” Fenir backed out the hut as Matty placed his arm around Lemmy’s shoulders.
The village circle was full of wolves when he came out into the daylight. He bypassed them and tried to go directly to his hut, in a hurry to get the pups settled. Unfortunately it was not to be, as the entire pack came over to him, led by Namile and Claw, leaving a solitary wolf in the circle.
Fenir placed the basket down on the floor, tucking the fur closer around their bodies to keep them warm, and held up his hand in a warning and they stopped their advance. “I warn you now, any raised voices will not be tolerated. You will wake the children.”
Claw came forwards, which was unusual for him. “What are you going to do with Matty? I demand that he is punished for his attack on Namile.”
“He was within his rights, he was protecting his mate and child. She attacked Lemmy first and caught Wren at the same time.” There were whispers and dark looks from the other subs.
“Then I will challenge him myself, it is my right!” Claw’s voice rose and he thumped his hand across his chest. Noise grew from the other dom’s as they murmured their own feelings.
Fenir growled low in his throat to warn them about increasing their volume. “You will not challenge Matty. Namile had no right to strike either Lemmy or Wren and Matty was well within his rights to restrain her.” Claw growled, his eyes darkening.
Namile chimed in “Lemmy was being disrespectful to you. He has no right to do that.”
“I am indebted to Lemmy, for agreeing to nurse the twins. There was no offence caused and nor is it your place to defend me if there was.”
Claw bowed his head down as if to strike. “This is not the last you have heard of this.” Fenir nodded to Claw, acknowledging that the conversation would be continued at a later time.
Fenir looked around his pack and notice some faces conspicuously missing. “Where are Maya and Melim?” The rest of the pack looked poignantly towards Han and Charl, who were staring at their feet as the kicked up the loose dirt. “What has happened?”
Charl elbowed Han and he came forward. “After you left with the pups, Melim and Maya refused to leave the sub so we... we made them move.”
Charl came forward. “Melim is over there" he pointed towards the solitary figure sitting in the circle. “but Maya ran off, saying he didn’t want to be in a pack like this.”
Fenir looked over to Blue, who held Pelim in his arms. He was as white as sheet and was clinging to his son like a lifeline. “I haven’t been able to leave to go and find him, with all the commotion..." Blue made a small head gesture towards his son, who had obviously been crying. Fenir nodded, is this what he had done to his pack? Split them so throughly that a Dom could not even leave his child in the care of another?
"Tempar, please could you watch the twins and Pelim, whilst we go in search of Maya?" Namile scoffed and murmured something about being better off without him. Fenir continued with a rough growl. "It will be dark soon and winter is setting in." Blue nervously handed Pelim to Tempar, after giving him a squeezing hug, like it would be his last. Fenir placed a hand on Blue's shoulder. "He will be there when we get back, and so will your mate." Blue gave him a small smile. "Let's head out. Han, Claw and Bej, go towards the river clearing. Charl, Nero and Ram, towards the berry patch and Blue and myself will go towards the watering hole. French and Evan, stay here and take care of the pack. The wolves nodded in unison and set out on their assigned paths. Fenir allowed himself a small smile before they set off. His pack was not broken beyond repair, give them an order and they were a unit once again, only now they were hunting a missing pack member. Now all he had to do was stop the internal war going on with the sub's and perhaps they could get back to the way they were. Just how he would be able to end that war was a mystery, negotiation and compromise was not one of his virtues and he doubted a good fight would work quite the same way as it did with the doms.
Fenir and Blue ran quickly through the forest like there was a monster on their heels. Blue's face fixed in a stare of complete focus so that Fenir could almost hear the mantra running through his mind, 'Maya is going to be ok'. They reached the watering hole in record time. Blue was panting heavily, trying to catch his breath as he quickly scanned the area for his mate.
Blue let a joyous yelp and took flight across the clearing as he saw his mate, sitting on his knees looking into the lake. Maya looked up and gave his own yelp in reply, standing to receive his bounding mate into his arms. Fenir held back, letting them have their moment, before walking over quietly to wait for them to be ready to return to the village.
Their greeting was tender, Blue taking Maya up into his arms tightly, lifting him up off the ground to touch their foreheads together, rubbing noses. No words were used as none were needed, they could both feel the waves of joy coming from each other at being reunited. Blue slowly dropped Maya to the ground and slowly let him out of the hug he had been trapped in. Maya looked around quickly.
"Where is Pelim?" Panic laced his voice as his eyes darted around the clearing looking for his child.
Blue faltered so Fenir answered for him. "He is back at the village, being looked after by Tempar."
Maya looked at his mate in disgust, dropping his arms and backing away. "You left our pup there with them!?"
"Please, Maya, it was…" Blue's voice faltered again.
"You must go back and get him at once! We can't leave him there!" Maya started pacing backwards and forwards, clearly frantic, Blue tried to calm him, to take him back into his arms again, but he kept moving away, not able to keep still.
Fenir tried to calm him,"We will all return to the village you will see that your pup is fine." Maya stopped moving abruptly and acknowledged Fenir's presence for the first tie since they had arrived in the clearing with a hard stare.
"You think I would go back to that place with you! I am never going back!"
Fenir took a deep breath, trying to keep his temper. "Maya, you are being irrational."
"Irrational! I have never felt more rational in my life. I have seen what you do, seen how you treat you pack! I will not watch whilst you destroy my family!" Maya took a lunge forward, his teeth bared to attack, only to be caught and held back by his mate.
Fenir was taken aback by the vicious hatred emanating from the gentle healer. This was madness! "You would leave you pup without a pack? And your mate without a hunt? All because I am keeping my word and punishing a murdering sub?"
Maya took a moment, extracting himself from Blue's arms and breathing deeply to control his anger. "Me and my family will be better off without a pack if you are considered a good alpha. You disgust me, what you have done is unforgivable."
"What have a done that I didn't promise to do, that we all agreed was necessary when we first took the sub in?"
"That travesty is not what we agreed! He is going to die! That is torture!"
Fenir was confused, he knew the bond went deep but he couldn't believe that a strong sub like his would die from that. "What do you mean die? How can having the ups taken away so early be that bad?"
"You really don't know, do you? You don't know what they have done" Fenir shook his head. Maya thought for a moment, staring at the floor. "Very well, I will return with you to collect my pup and then I will show you the evil you have bought down upon your head." Fenir nodded again and moved aside for the others to go ahead of him.
It took them slightly longer to return to the village, Maya only managing to run half the way, before succumbing to the day's strain. The village was eerily quiet, especially after the drama of the day, the only noise being the crackle of the central fire. Fenir walked quickly over to the meeting circle to see who had returned from search party and to let the others know that Maya had come back the village for now at least.
The rest of the pack were sitting around the fire in as their dinner slowly cooked on the fire. Their silence laid heavy on the air, sitting on it like a squat toad. Matty and Lemmy had emerged with Wren to collect food and were currently sat on the far side of the circle. Claw was currently involved in a war of eyes with Matty, each one attempting to stare down the other, Ram was remaining beside his friend but was clearly watching for trouble, ready to step in and Namile was wisely remaining quiet, though occasionally throwing her own weighty stare into the mix. The other wolves seemed to have easily taken sides, Nero, French and Charl standing by Matty, whilst Bej, Han and Saf sided, along with Ram, stood with Claw. Only Evan and Elouise seemed to remain neutral, sitting to the far side of the circle, though probably more from Evan's insistence over Elouise's health than anything else. It wouldn't take a lot for things to kick off and right now that would be a very bad thing. Their were pups that could easily be hurt in a large fight and Fenir had larger concerns than having the breakup a pack brawl. If Maya left they would be Without a healer and it wouldn't take long for the pack to succumb to illness and injury.
Fenir announced himself, trying to draw their attention away. "Maya has returned for the moment." None of the wolves moved an inch, their eyes locking together. The silence was ended as deep growls rumbled from several wolves around the circle. Claw's leg twitched slightly, his lip curling upwards. Fenir pounced into the circle, placing himself between Claw and Matty as Claw jumped to his feet and tried to throw himself across the circle. Fenir caught him easily by the throat, holding him up of the ground, as Matty had done to Namile.
Claw struggled against the iron grip, his fingers trying to prize the hand from his throat to loosen the Alpha's grasp but Fenir held fast, slowly squeezing the fingers together. The rest of the pack were stunned to the spot as they watched the two old friends fight. Claw's movements became weaker and he slowly stopped fighting, his hands hanging limply by his side. Fenir let go, throwing him slightly back towards his seat. Claw landed on his side in the dirt and remained still, his laboured breath being the only sign that he remained conscious.
Fenir walked over to the heap on the floor. "You would attack another pack member, with his mate and his pup next to him?" Claw groaned and rolled on the his back.
"He attacked Namile first!" Claw's voice was harsh and croaky but the anger behind it was clear to everyone. Fenir knelt down beside his friend.
"And I told you he was defending his mate and pup. Lemmy had done nothing to Namile to provoke the attack and Wren was caught in the middle. If you still wish to raise a grievance then do so and we will convene a council but I will not let you divide this pack!"
Claw's lip rose into a snarl. "I was not the one to divide the pack."
Fenir hung his head in shame. "I know, but now I am going to set things right, but I will need your help, old friend." Claw paused for a moment before giving a resigned nod. Fenir returned the recognition with a smile before he reached down and helped him to his feet. Fenir looked to the rest of the pack. "I highly suggest the rest of you get back to your huts, dinner will not be ready for some time. Right now I have to go and try and convince our healer not to leave the pack." There were some gasps and mutters especially from the subs, along with a very obvious scoff coming from Namile's direction. Fenir turned his head towards her and growled. She visibly shrank backwards which pleased Fenir, at least he could still intimidate them. Fenir raised his eyebrow to Ram, putting in charge of the dispersal and keeping the peace before he moved off to find Maya and Blue.
He found them quickly, waiting for him outside the sub's hut. They had retrieved Pelim from his hut and were currently fussing over him. Maya saw him approach with a sullen face. He placed Pelim on the ground and telling him to stay with his father.
"I am sorry I was delayed." Fenir didn't explain as they had no doubt heard the commotion. "I told you Pelim would be ok." Maya gave him a dubious look as he stood up.
"I checked over the twins whilst I was there. They seem healthy enough, for everything they have been through today. You will need to wake them soon to be fed." Fenir nodded. "I haven't gone in yet, just encase you wanted to say I had set this up." Maya pushed open the door and stepped to one side to allow Fenir to enter first.
Fenir's jaw dropped in horror at the display before him. The hut was in complete disarray and the sub was lying on the bed on his side, with his legs curled up to his body, around him the bed was covered in blood and after birth and the room stank of blood and sweat. His eyes were glassy staring out towards the door, completely unresponsive to their arrival. Maya closed the door behind them, making sure that Pelim did not follow them in. The click of the door sounded like a bomb blast to Fenir as it jolted him. His body ran on instinct, not waiting for his mind to get over the shock of the carnage he saw before him. He ran over to the sub and gathered him up into his arms, pulling him off the stained bed and resting him on his lap. The sub didn't acknowledge his presence, or even that he had moved, he just stared blankly at the door, like he was no longer there. Fenir rocked the body backwards and forwards, stroking his hair and back. Maya was shocked, to say the least, at the behaviour of the Alpha. He had never given the slightest inclining that he felt anything for Harry but here he was treating him like a proper mate, like he cared.
After a few moments Fenir stopped rocking, his mind reasserting itself enough to speak. "Why would they leave him like this?" His voice was steady but laced with uncertainty, like he wasn't sure he was in control of his actions or words.
"Those were your orders. He is not a member of the pack, remember? Me looking after the pups was fine but apparently as soon as they were born he was no longer my patient. When they dragged me and Melim away he hadn't moved. Why do you even care? This is what you wanted isn't it? Your own little docile breeding machine and now you've snapped his mind completely you will have no problem with him!" Maya's voice started to rise until he was shouting. Fenir felt the sub's little hands start to grip at his chest, like he was trying to hold on to a cliff. Maya continued "Why don't you just do the same to all us 'problem' subs? Turn us into happy little drones like Namile who'll agree with every bloody word you say. That'll stop you having anymore trouble with us!" the grip on his chest tightened.
"Shush!" Fenir hissed at the healer. Maya quietened for a moment shocked that Fenir would interrupt him, but quickly regained his composure, taking a breath to intensify his rant. Fenir interrupted again. "You are scaring him!" Maya's words caught in his throat, choking him slightly, as he dove across the hut to kneel next to the sub and alpha.
"He is reactive?" Maya said as he placed his hand on the clammy forehead of the sub.
Fenir nodded. "His hand is gripping me when you shout." Maya leant down close the the Harry's face to look into his eyes, passing his finger across in front of them. There was a knock at the door and Blue poked his head around the door.
"Lemmy is watching Pelim for the moment." He announced quickly, knowing that Maya would want to know immediately where his son was. "From you description I thought you might want some fresh furs." Blue waited for Maya to nod before approaching. He deposited the furs on the floor beside Fenir and moved over to his mate. "Is he going to be ok?" he said, looking at the glazed eyes staring into space.
"He might be," Maya turned his head to glare at Fenir. "if he gets the proper care." Fenir bowed his head. He had never felt so lost, his pack was falling to pieces, he had two small pups to take care of and the sub needed him, needed to be his mate. He looked up into the eyes of the healer. He knew he would have to give them an answer but at the moment he had none to give.
A/N Well I realise that this chapter is late but I hope you will all accept my reasons. I did actually finish this chapter on Monday but was completely unhappy with it. I also had some problems at work at couldn't give it as much attention as I wanted. I have got it to the point now where I am not ashamed to post it as I had so many people desperate for it. I am still not overly keen on it so next time I do a second draft expect this chapter to be heavily changed.
