Alina- I think you’ll find he isn’t out to save Hermione any embarrassment.
To everyone else, keep reading and reviewing.
Hermione’s smug smile was lost at the sight of the two men now standing in the headmistress’s office.
“Quite the speech, Miss Granger,” the gliding patronizing tone washed over her like the speaker’s lustrous hair fell over his shoulders in a white gold curtain.
“I find it of extreme importance to correct the ignorance of bigotry,” Hermione said coldly, “I’m sure you’ll agree that unfounded prejudices have a way of materializing in rather misguided and violent ways which inevitably hurt innocents and don’t always result in the desired end for the prejudiced, Mr. Malfoy.”
Lucius Malfoy simply narrowed his eyes and turned his head to the side, his knuckles turning to white as he gripped the head of his snake cane. Despite his impeccable appearance, it was well known that the senior male Malfoy’s life was anything but; he may have been granted a reprieve because of his last minute defection to the light side, but he was still having to spend large amounts of money to win back the respect of the people –charities, orphan funds, lavish galas, school donations.
To add insult to injury, he was finding his family name no longer had the same pull. His son, Draco, hadn’t been awarded the place of head boy despite Lucius’s multiple attempts to sway the board of governors and the headmistress. Lucius himself had to fight tooth and nail –or sickle and galleon— to be reinstated to his original positions in the ministry and the school governors, and Malfoy Apothecary had seen a drop in sales. Lucius had lost favor among the purebloods who had supported blood purity and Voldermort. The other, much larger portion of the wizarding world either no longer trusted him or, for those that had never trusted him, no longer feared him.
And then there was the outrage caused among traditionalists with his divorce. The Daily Prophet had had two weeks of front page news on the Malfoy family after Narcissa had filed for divorce, a first in wizarding history for a pureblood family. Eventually, it had become back page news. Then it had been shoved to some small column in the public announcement section until they appeared in court and the press’s hunger for rumors and scandal was renewed. Lucius never released a statement but was said to be “perturbed” by Narcissa’s abandonment. Hermione was sure it didn’t help matters that his former wife left with a reported one million galleons.
Currently, the man’s ire had been diverted from his ex-wife and was now directed at Hermione for her tactlessly reminding him.
“Miss Granger has always impressed the staff at Hogwarts with her numerous and grand tirades,” said the man standing next to Lucius, “I myself am deeply impressed with the new heights of impertinence and stupidity she reaches with each useless cause and ill-chosen word.”
Hermione narrowed her eyes at the sneering man next to Lucius and lifted her chin a fraction of an inch higher. Severus Snape stood to the right of the senior Malfoy, his back straight as an unbroken pillar of the coliseum and his arms folded across his chest. He had his eyebrow raised, but his the rest of face, even his eyes were guarded.
Professor McGonagall, who had moments before been beaming with pride for Hermione, allowed her Scottish temper to flare as she scolded, “Nonsense, Professor Snape! Miss Granger has demonstrated an exceptionally sharp wit.”
Turning her proud smile back to Hermione she added, “She’s quite the witch.”
Hermione shifted from one foot to the other, trying desperately to hold back her beaming smile least the two Slytherins in the room spot a moment to turn her preening under praise against her.
“I wasn’t expecting you, Mr. Malfoy, Professor Snape, for another hour. Excuse me while I gather my reports,” McGonagall said to the two men.
She began to walk towards the door Hermione assumed lead to the head of school’s private chambers. As she got to Hermione, she stopped and laid a hand on the girl’s shoulder.
“Miss Granger, I’m sorry but it appears I have some business to attend to immediately. You’ll have to show yourself out. I believe those books are a good start for your research; you can retrieve the others when you’ve finished. If you have any questions, you know where to find me.”
“Thank you, Professor. You’ve been an excellent help,” Hermione replied graciously.
The headmistress continued on into her chambers, shutting the door behind her. At the sound of the lock catching in the door, Hermione became hyperaware of the fact that she was alone in the office with two men who resented if not hated her very existence. One of those men had watched as she had been savagely tortured by his sister-in-law, Bellatrix Lestrange; the other would probably be torturing her tonight.
Hermione quickly walked to the desk where she had placed the heavy books. As she reached for them, Lucius’s cane slammed into them, nearly waking her fingers in the process. Hermione jumped and withdrew her wand, a kneejerk reaction to the sudden violent movement.
“Doing a little light reading on…”
Lucius moved towards the books to scan the title of the top copy. Hermione jumped forward and made to grab them, but Lucius stilled her with a single upraised hand.
“Guide of Conduct for Staff of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; Detention Records, 1605 to 1793; Detention Records, 1793 to 1832,” Lucius drawled each title out loud as he looked the tomes over.
He raised his eyebrows and turned his gaze towards the trembling, tomato red Hermione.
“My, Miss Granger, what could you possibly want with these records?” He asked, the suspicion heavy in his arrogant voice.
“Mr. Malfoy, I need my books please,” Hermione mumbled and held out her hand, training her eyes on the stack to avoid his probing gaze.
He merely drew his eyes slowly up from her toes to the mass of frizzed tendrils that were spilling out of her bun.
“I would suspect they’d all be rather dry reading for a seventeen-year-old…”
Hermione cut him off to say, “Nineteen, actually. And I need them for a report, so if you’d please…”
Hermione trailed off and stared pointedly at the books. When Lucius made no sign that he was going to move, Hermione grabbed the books and tried to lift them. The blonde wizard laid a hand and trapped the leather-bound records to the table. Hermione scowled at him and yanked all the harder.
“Lucius, give the girl her books so she’ll bless us with the absence of her presence all the quicker,” Snape said as if he was breaking up a scuffle between two first year Slytherins.
Both Hermione and Lucius looked towards him, Hermione glaring daggers and Lucius quizzical. Snape had his eyes squeezed shot and was pinching the bridge of his nose. Without turning his head from Snape, Lucius moved his eyes to stare at Hermione, eyebrows raised. He stepped back, removing his hand from the stack of books and searched her face appraisingly. A bemused expression still on his angular face, Lucius held a hand out towards the tomes as if to present them to her. Hermione took the opportunity to snatch them up.
Head lowered, she mumbled a thank you and scurried to the door, avoiding looking at Snape as she passed him. When she had one foot of the first landing of the stair, she heard Snape’s voice call out to her.
“Oh, Miss Granger,” he said, “Ten points for the use of the term “mudblood” and detention tomorrow night at nine.”
Hermione turned around to look back into the office, her mouth hanging open and an angry fire dancing in her eyes.
Before she could say anything in her defense, she watched Snape take out his wand and wave it at the door. As it was slamming shut in her face, she could hear the voice of Phineas Black say, “Impertinent chit.”
