Landing in the entry hall of a mansion he was certain was about the size of Malfoy Manor, Severus quickly passed the cauldrons off to an elf that seemed to be waiting for him. Telling the creature to take them to the potion's lab, that he would handle the unshrinking and such himself soon, he was about to go find Lucius to determine just where he was and the course of action they needed to take to get those damned vile creatures away from the place before they attracted the wrong kind of attention. Then, once that was done, he wanted to hear in minute detail just what had happened. However, he didn't need to go looking for his co-conspirator as Lucius made an appearance quickly, looking slightly stunned and nervous.
With a sigh, Lucius told Severus, obviously relieved, “Good, you got the message.”
Nodding gravely, Severus told him, “Yes. I can see what caused the concern and it was prudent to get out of there. The creatures are still there, though. I doubt they will leave when Potter's Patronus fades. Something has to be done to get them away from that place.”
“Never fear, I have something in mind for that.” Lucius told him with a firm nod. Motioning for Severus to follow, he led him towards the room Harry was in trying out wands, explaining where they were and such.
Once in there, he saw Potter still going through the stacks of wands, not appearing to have found one to suit him yet. “No luck, Harry?”
With a sigh and shake of his head, Harry told him, sounding gloomy, “No, nothing yet. I've got a few that are a maybe,” he said, pointing to about five that were sitting beside one of the boxes, “But nothing feels 'right' yet. Not surprising, really, since it took forever to find mine when we went to Ollivanders.”
“Keep trying. Find something you can work with for tonight anyway. I have something in mind to get you a new one.” Lucius told him, taking a seat and motioning for Severus to do the same.
Seating himself at the table, Severus was relieved when a pot of tea appeared in front of them. After fixing himself a cup and taking a sip, he leaned back then said, “Alright, what happened and where are we? Also, what is your plan to distract the Dementors?”
Quickly, Lucius, with Harry jumping in here and there when asked, gave a rundown of what had transpired then filled Severus in on where they were, making sure to add the part about the extra protections of the place. After that, sipping his own tea, Lucius said, “What I'm going to do is go back and snag the wand. Then I'm going to take it somewhere on the other side of the country and cast a spell with it. Though the magical signature will be slightly different because I'm doing it and the spell won't work right, it should be enough to get their attention then draw them in that direction. After doing that, I'm going to break it.” Seeing a slightly distressed look on Harry's face, Lucius shook his head and sighed, “There is no other way, Harry. That's what they appeared to be honing in on. We can't chance it.” Seeing the young man give a reluctant nod, he then continued. “After doing that, I'll leave it somewhere that someone from our world should stumble across it. That, hopefully, will send the factions looking somewhere else for Harry.”
Pleased with what he was hearing, Severus nodded. “Yes, it should work well. At least it'll pull them away from where they might get clues about things.”
“That was my thought,” Lucius nodded. “Once we get that done, tonight we'll break the binding on Harry's magic. We found most of the spells today, he and I. Though you need to look at them to assure we do it right and they are the ones we need, we should be able to accomplish it. Tomorrow, we'll go into Glastonbury and get him a new wand. The wandmaker that comes in the summer that caters to those going to Durmstrang, ones that don't usually want an Ollivander wand, is in town for only a couple more days. The unbinding of the magic and the new wand will change Harry's magical signature enough that no one should be able to trace him through that again. Plus, this maker puts a spell on his wands to ensure that no one can dump a Trace on them or anything like that. I know there are other places you can get a wand but I thought this best as we can, for a small fee, have him add spells to protect the wand, thus the user, from any kind of spell the Ministry can think to try to employ to trace the user.”
Thinking that over, Severus couldn't see a flaw in any of it. There would, as always, be 'issues' with things, but it was something he could work with. Nodding, he told the two, “That will be fine. While you attend to the wand, I’ll go through the spells to see what I can determine with them. As long as they are even close, we shouldn't have an issue. Only troubling thing for me is going into town. Glamours are not ideal for something like that. They are easily detected and some can tell if you are wearing one on sight.”
“Yes, I had thought of that. My solution was Polyjuice Potion. I assume you have some of that, Severus?” When the Potions Master replied in the affirmative, Lucius pressed on. “One of Draco's hairbrushes is still here. We can use that so nothing will appear suspicious to anyone. After all, the family goes into Glastonbury a few times a year together so it won't seem strange, especially at this time to get clothes and such for the new school year.” Stopping, he was amused by the horrified expression on Harry's face. Trying not to chuckle or smirk, he told the young man, “I assure you, Draco wouldn't be any happier to hear you are Polyjuiced as him than you will be doing so. As it doesn't change anything but your appearance, it'll be perfect to get you a wand and anything else we chose to do.”
With a heavy sigh, Harry agreed, “Alright, I'll do it.” Shaking his head, he continued to go through the wands but wasn't having much luck finding anything. “At least I can get something suited for me. None of these seem to be.”
Looking at the pile of wands the young man had gone through, Severus shook his head. “Maybe you should just give it over for now. Once we unbind your magic, chances are whatever you would find right now probably won't work well after that.”
“I know it's silly, but I feel naked without the wand,” Harry told him with a shrug.
Nodding, Severus said nothing. That was something he could understand. His wand was always on him within reach. He couldn't imagine having to do without it, especially around people he didn't trust. That was going to be all he would say about it at this point. Besides, it would keep the brat occupied while he and Lucius attended to other things.
Finishing his cup of tea, Lucius stood then said, “Let's get to it. You attend to the potions and the spells while I'll go handle the wand. When I get back, I'll give everyone a grand tour and show you where your rooms are.”
Figuring that was as good a plan as any, Severus finished his own tea then readied himself to attend to things.
Walking around in the building that was a small dueling arena on the grounds of the manor, Lucius and Severus were making sure all the protective spells and warding were in place as well as erecting standard shields to protect themselves. Because this was a place used to practice dueling, it was intended to have all kinds of protections in place to ensure no one really got hurt by errant spells that were cast. Lucius, because it hadn't been used in a long time, wanted to ascertain none of the protections had waned or failed, planning to ensure he and Severus were as protected as good as they could be when they did this. Though not sure how much of a magical burst would come when Harry's magic was unbound, he wanted to guarantee the two of them wouldn't be in danger from whatever would come from it.
Pacing nervously, Harry rolled the wand he had finally found between his fingers. Though the two men had explained to him what was going to happen, never having seen anything like this before, he was understandably uptight about the unknown factor. Oh, he was relieved that his magic would be unbound and he would have access to all of it finally, but that didn't alleviate the nervousness he felt.
Once the two men were as convinced as they could get that everything that could be done to protect themselves was in place, they stepped up onto the dueling platform not far from where Harry was. After Lucius activated the wards around the platform then a protective bubble around the two of them, he fingered his wand. “Are you ready, Harry?”
Giving a shaky nod, Harry cleared his throat then said, “As ready as I'll ever be.”
Figuring that was going to be as good as it was going to get, Lucius nodded to Severus then the two readied their wands. Thankfully, Severus was a master at spellcrafting and had managed to merge all the ones needed into one spell that would strip off the layers of the binding in order. After counting to three, they both cast, holding onto their wands tightly as the spell hit Harry.
At first, all Harry felt was a mild tingling. He could see the spell from the color that surrounded him and feel it working. As the time ticked on, that mild tingling grew more intense but, as it did that, he could feel something akin to weights being stripped off him, making him feel lighter. Finally, when that tingling reached a pinnacle of some kind, it held on for several minutes, not changing. That's when he felt something odd. It was like his magic was battling against something, trying to cut free. Nor, from what he was feeling, did there seem to be much progress. Looking at the two older men across from him, he could see a look of intense concentration on their faces as well as sweat starting to bead on them.
Just as he was beginning to wonder if the last of whatever was going to defeat the spell as whatever binding was there seemed to be holding tight, an intense shudder ran through his body and then, suddenly, it was as though a great weight was lifted off him. When that happened, winds seemed to kick up around him, swirling almost like a small tornado, then there was a burst of magic that he could feel that seemed to pool out around him in ripples, like the ones you saw in a pond when you dropped a rock in it. The ripple seemed to be encompassed of bright, vibrant, energetic colors that were almost blinding in intensity. Then, abruptly, there was something like a sonic boom that sent out a huge shockwave of magic that burst through the ward that the two men had put up, bowling them over and knocking them back several feet. On Harry's end, though, it felt wonderful! Not only was it as though there was a massive weight gone, he could feel the magic coursing through his body in a way he never had before. It made him feel almost euphoric in nature and was intense enough that he dropped to his knees, panting heavily, grinning like an idiot.
Peeling themselves off the floor, Lucius and Severus winced, rubbing on areas that were now bruised. Looking at the young man kneeling, Severus said, tone dry, “I don't think there is any doubt that the binding is gone.”
Shaking his head, Lucius replied, “No, I think that it was obvious from the magical burst.”
Stepping forward, Severus cast the detection spell again and nodded, pleased, when he saw that, indeed, the binding was gone completely. “How are you feeling, Mr. Potter?”
Looking up, a goofy grin on his face, Harry told him, “Amazing!”
Smirking, Severus shook his head. The euphoria would wear off shortly then the young man would probably sleep for the remainder of the night as his body adjusted to his new magical levels. They would have to make sure that he ate and drank something before that happened so he could take the potions that were now ready but that should improve a great many things on his end.
Waiting a few minutes while Harry got himself under a bit of control, Severus then said, when he stood finally, “Cast your Patronus. I want to see how much of an effect the unbinding has had.” The Patronus was a magic that was directly linked to your core in more ways than most spells were as you had to call on a memory to produce it. The intensity of the light that would come off of it would be telling about the power levels behind it. That's what he wanted to see.
Nodding, Harry gripped the wand tightly then cast the spell. Eyes widening as he looked at his stag, they were almost to the point of watering because of the brightness of the Patronus. It was nearly blinding in its intensity now.
Looking at the stag, Severus was pleased. Indeed, the boy's magic was affected greatly. That told him both he and Lucius were going to have to work with him to get it under some form of control lest spells that he was used to casting ended up too powerful and caused damage.
Standing there, Lucius, squinted his eyes at the brightness of the stag but was pleased. At least Harry's magic was now unbound. That could only help things. Then he smelled something off, like a burning of some kind. Brow furrowed, he looked around, trying to determine where it was coming from. One glance in Harry's direction, though, was enough to tell him what it was. “Harry! Drop the wand! It's on fire!”
Startled, Harry looked down at his temporary wand then immediately dropped it as the flames that were coming out of the end began to eat at the wood. “Bloody hell!” He breathed, backing away from the thing. Watching as the two men doused the flames, he asked, “What caused that?”
Stepping closer, looking down at the now crispy wand, Severus shook his head, “Your magic is now too powerful for it and you burnt out the core. It's best we get you one suited to you rather than try to find another one.”
Nodding, the young man said nothing, just staring down at what had been the wand he was using. That was the first time he had ever heard of that happening before. Shaking his head, he said nothing for a minute before changing the subject, “Ummm... can I get something to eat, please? I'm a bit hungry now.”
“Of course!” Lucius told him. “That would be expected from the amount of magic you just threw off. Dinner should be ready about now anyway. We could all do with some food, I believe.”
“Exactly,” Severus nodded. “I can give you those potions after you eat. I imagine, once you've ingested food, you'll be tired from the amount of energy you went through.”
Though he heard what was said, all Harry could think about was eating but he nodded. Then, remembering what happened, he asked, “You two are alright, aren't you? You didn't get hurt when you were thrown?”
“We're fine, Harry. It was a rather spectacular display of your magic but we're fine. Just some bruising is all.” Lucius assured the young man. When he saw him nod, he said, “Now, food is in the offing for all of us. Come, let's see what the house elves have made for us.”
Late that night, long after Harry had gone to sleep and Severus had returned from a brief meeting with the Dark Lord, Severus and Lucius were sitting in the lounge enjoying a drink of aged scotch. Now much less stressed, the two of them were going over what Lucius and Harry had discussed that day not to mention all that had gone on.
Taking it in, Severus nodded over it. “Good. It appears that at least he will cooperate and not fight things nor will he be a danger when it comes to exposing us. This can only aid things.”
“It will also lead to him being more forthcoming about information that we may well need desperately in the future,” Lucius added.
“Yes, there is that.” Changing topics, Severus relayed, “Dumbledore wants a meeting with me this week. I have a feeling that he's worried enough about Potter not being found by now that he might start to give up some information we are in desperate need of. Those plans he is holding so close to his vest might start to be revealed as well.”
“I hope so!” Lucius told him emphatically. “We can, probably, piece together what his plans are or what he knows, but it would be better if we could get it from him as we don't know what kind of timeframe we have to work with here. Between him and the Dark Lord, we're doing a delicate dance anyway. The faster we can get anything, the better off we'll be.”
“That's my hope as well. I believe some panic is starting to come into play with this as everything he's tried to find Potter with has failed. Nor can anyone else seem to come up with anything. The Dark Lord has failed as well with it, as has the Ministry. That's good news on our end all around. At least we know that we're keeping him safe and he's undetected. Though I'll keep my ear to the ground when it comes to other things that they may try.”
Nodding, Lucius added, “Good idea. The Dark Lord is bound to give up some of what he's doing on that, as is the Order. The Ministry, I'm sure, won't but with the beings in the Order, it's bound to be passed along to you.”
“It is. Tonks and Kingsley are keeping us updated on what the Ministry is doing, at least plans they know of. I'm sure there are others, though, and we won't know about those.” Taking another sip of his drink, he added, changing topics once more, “I think I'm more at ease with this trip into town after today. I was worried about Potter trying to get away from us while there. After this discussion, though, that fear seems to be settled down.”
“Yes, the talk was productive. No, no trust is there but we've agreed to work towards it. You, too, should probably do the same thing with him. That will do nothing but aid us in the future.” Lucius told his old friend with a pointed look.
“I agree, that's something I need to do as well. It's something I believe I'll attend to tomorrow some time as I don't have anything pressing that needs my attention.”
“Though it would be a risk, because of the trust issue between the three of us, I would suggest that we do a bit of shopping while in town.” Seeing Severus lift an eyebrow at that, Lucius explained, “It would show Harry that we are trying to work towards that. His clothes... well, you've seen them, they leave a lot to be desired. Other things to occupy his time would be good as well. If you have a list of books for the term already, we can get those and stave off issues later on. He inquired about some other subjects as well. Perhaps we can get him to tell us what he's interested in and get those as well. Then just stop in and window shop in places. That's what usually happens when I take Draco into town so it wouldn't seem amiss to anyone for us to do such a thing.”
Thinking that over, Severus nodded. It was a wise thing. Not only would it show Potter they were trying to build trust but wouldn't raise an eyebrow of those in town that saw the Malfoy's on a regular basis. “The list... I have most but not for DADA yet. Dumbledore has yet to be able to find someone for the position. That is troubling because, from what I hear, there are rumblings of the Ministry threatening to step in if he can't.”
Brow furrowing, Lucius shook his head. “That's not good. I should go sometime this week and see if I can't get something out of someone about the topic so that we know what's going to happen with that. The more information we have on such things, the better off we're going to be.”
“Good idea. It would be a bone I could toss to the old man and make things look good as well as normal. It would seem odd to him if I didn't get information about such things from you.”
“Yes, we need to keep up appearances the best we can until I vanish. However, we do have to make sure that I'm out of play before the beginning of the term. Draco not showing up for classes or getting his letter is going to send up warning flags for everyone.” Lucius sighed.
That wasn't something Severus had thought of. With Lucius sending Narcissa and Draco away, it was going to appear mighty suspicious to all if Lucius was still around. Though they had a timeline for yanking Lucius out, that was now bumped up slightly and it had to be done sooner than later. “Give it a few days to see how the potions work with Potter. If they do what they purport to, we'll give them to you and you are out of things. After that, we'll work on other ways of blocking things. It'll buy us enough time that we should be able to do so.” Stopping, Severus took another sip of his drink then said, changing topics again, “I would also suggest that you start working with Potter on academic things now as will I, to an extent anyway. That should work on building the trust, more so with you than me, I believe. We have to do something to get his magic under control. Though the new wand will improve that, he's going to have to relearn some things before he can delve into the new things.”
“Let's give it a couple days for things to settle down and him to grow accustomed to the wand then we should, yes,” Lucius nodded, taking a sip of his own drink. “I agree, though, we need to. Part of that will involve assessing how much of a problem came from his magic being bound and how much from other areas. I would think that he was struggling with so much because of the binding, though other factors figured in as well.”
“I agree,” Severus sighed. “I believe Potter is one that will do better when not pulled in so many directions by beings like Dumbledore. Working with just you might improve a great deal. Beings his age are prone to distractions anyway, interested in other things, but with all he's been subjected to, it's no wonder his academics have suffered from it.”
“This is true. He's not a fool like so many of us thought. He might not be fast on the uptake of things, but he's fairly intelligent. There is also the fact that I don't believe most, other than probably his friends, bother to listen to anything he says about things. If they do, they just minimize it or treat it as something not worth pursuing. That, too, needs to change. For us, a third being observing what is going on can see things we can't. That will be most helpful.”
Thinking that over, Severus had to agree. He understood why Dumbledore, as well as others, had tried to shield Potter from some of the more ugly truths in things but it was to the point that such a thing shouldn't be done anymore. Hell, it was to that point when his name came out of that goblet the year before. It was then that Potter, despite his age, needed to know just what was going on to do the most basic things to protect himself. No, he and Lucius needed to ensure the same thing was done. This was a risky dance and to try to protect a young man that hadn't really been a child for many years now, Potter needed to know the whole truth of everything. “Agreed. A third point of view or ideas from him would be helpful. He, after all, knows about things we don't. That information is going to be needed. Encouraging him to be forthcoming and listening to what he has to say can only benefit us.”
Sitting there, quiet, for several minutes, neither of the men said anything while they sipped their drinks, lost in their own thoughts. It was Lucius that finally broke the silence. Quietly, he said, “Did you see the power that Potter has? I don't think I've seen anything comparable other than from the Dark Lord himself.”
“I've always considered you and I to be powerful beings. No one, I don't believe, would argue that. Potter now leaves us in the dust with that. The sheer magnitude of his magic is almost stunning. He was, up until we found out about the binding, just average. It wasn't anything to write home about. But this...” Stopping, Severus shook his head.
“And the Dark Lord had to have sensed that when he was a child. It would be almost like a beacon, even in an infant. I'd bet my eye teeth that it was the Dark Lord that bound it. However, I'd also bet that Dumbledore knew it was bound and made certain it stayed that way.”
Frowning, Severus nodded, “I agree, on both points. However, it raises the question about why Dumbledore would do that. There is something rotten there, I'm sure of it. He had a plan when it came to that but what it is, I don't know.”
“I believe that plays into one of those things we need to find out, Severus.”
“I completely agree,” the Potions Master nodded. With a sigh, he leaned back in his chair, mind whirling all over, trying to piece together the tidbits of information they had on things related to Potter. However, as tired as he was, it wasn’t going to happen. Finally, after several minutes, he drained the last of his scotch then said, “I think I'll retire for the night. It's been a long day and I'm in need of rest.”
Draining his drink, Lucius stood then stretched. “I believe I'll do the same thing. It's been a trying day.” Standing, he stretched then slumped. It was definitely bedtime.
After walking up the stairs together, the two bid each other goodnight then parted ways, going to their rooms to get some much needed rest after a supremely stressful day.
