“So, how do you propose we get in without running into anyone?” Draco asked, running a hand through his hair.
“The chamber has an outside entrance by the lake. We’ll go that way,” Harry supplied. “How much trouble does the cold give you anyway?” “Enough that I’m not going to leave these blankets behind,” Draco supplied, pulling the said blankets closer around himself. One blanket he’d fashioned into a sling and was now holding the few things he’d had stashed in the cave. “I’m cold blooded now. Winter is the worst,” he grumbled as he kept as much of his body under the blankets as possible. “You’ll have to lead the way and not look back. It’s too dangerous any other way.”Harry frowned at that. “There has to be some way that you can use your eyes and not hurt anyone other than that,” he said as he thought. “Maybe some sunglasses or something. Blocks your eyes but still lets you see…”“What the devil are sunglasses?” Draco asked.“Ah, a muggle invention. Basically glasses with blacked out lenses that you can still see through,” Harry explained. He nearly laughed at the skeptical look on Draco’s face. Even without having his eyes open it was clear he was far from pleased with the idea of using a muggle invention for any reason whatsoever. “We can try that out later though,” Harry added as he got up as much as the cramped cave would allow. “Did you make this place?”Draco nodded. “Yeah, rain is almost as bad as snow,” he muttered. “And it wasn’t like any of the other creatures around here would let me stay with them. Gorgons aren’t exactly known as friendly sociable creatures…”Harry was silent for a moment. “We’ll reverse this, Draco. I promise.”Draco smiled a bit. “Always the hero… that never stopped aggravating me you know,” he said. “But I kind of missed it too.”Harry smiled despite the fact Draco could see it. “And I sort of missed your uptight attitude,” he replied before taking Draco’s hand and starting to lead the way out of the cave. Draco hissed out a curse when his body met the snow but otherwise didn’t complain. Harry figured that he would prefer getting inside as fast as possible so he didn’t waste any time in leading the way through the forest towards the lake. He noticed the snakes following them though. “What’s going on with all these snakes anyway? They call you Master.”Draco sighed heavily. “Yes, I know. I’m not quite sure really. It’s like they just can’t help but come and be around me. No matter where I go they follow. Except when they’re off getting headstrong Gryffindors of course…”“Hey, that probably saved your life,” Harry said in annoyance.“Yes, yes. I won’t argue that. But still… they didn’t do that because I told them to,” Draco said, pulling the blankets tighter around his body. Harry looked at the ground then slowly behind him to see that the thick coils of Draco’s new body were still right behind him, leaving a deep trench in the snow. “You shouldn’t look behind you at all, Harry.”“I can’t help it,” Harry admitted. “How come you still feel so tall behind me, anyway?” he asked. Though he didn’t dare look too far above him he could clearly feel Draco’s presence looming.Draco sighed a little. “It’s uncomfortable to be on my stomach all the time… so I’ve learned how to move mostly upright. It saves on scratches. I’m still faster on my stomach though. More muscles to move me that way I guess…” he muttered, sounding less than enthused. Harry winced some and held back asking any more questions for the moment. He should have realized Draco wouldn’t want to discuss his current condition.“We’ll find a way to fix this, Draco,” Harry stated firmly.“So you’ve said. How much further is this entrance anyway?” he asked and Harry could practically hear him shivering. If he wasn’t mistaking that slight chattering noise was Draco’s teeth as they clacked together from the cold. Harry was glad he’d insisted on moving Draco inside. He doubted his ex would have survived the harsh winter that was promising to come. If he’d even survived the night. “It’s just up ahead, Draco. Just hold on a little longer and then I’ll find some way to warm you up again,” Harry promised.“I can think of plenty of ways you can warm me up, Harry…”Harry was almost certain he’d imagined the hiss from behind him. But he knew he hadn’t. There had been far too much longing in Draco’s soft voice for it to be just his imagination. He barely resisted looking over his shoulder. “I’m married, Draco,” Harry replied softly.Draco let out a long hiss that sounded annoyed. “Don’t treat me like an idiot. I heard about what happened to your wife, Harry. I know I’m no longer attractive or desirable in any way but don’t lie about it,” he spat. “You weren’t even supposed to hear that…” he added in a sullen tone. The black haired savior sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair, mussing it even more. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have used that as an excuse,” he admitted. “But for the record, you are still attractive.”Draco scoffed. “If you like scales. Can we just get inside already?” he demanded.Harry nodded a bit and pointed to a opening just ahead. “That leads to the chamber. It’s kind of a drop though,” he warned. “The only way we got out of here before was Fawkes flew us up through it.”“Not a problem,” Draco assured confidently as they came to the edge of the sinkhole. Draco peered down into the jagged opening and Harry got the briefest chance to see his entire face. If only in profile. He really hadn’t lost much attractiveness though he was a bit older and worn looking than last Harry remembered.Harry quickly turned his attention to the hole, not wanting to cause any accidents if Draco looked over at him. “I guess we climb down then,” he said as the snakes already started slithering ahead of them.“You’d fall and break your neck,” Draco retorted. “I’ll carry you,” he said reaching over and grabbing Harry’s arm.“Gah! Draco! You can’t carry me down that!” Harry protested and squirmed.“Harry! I know what I can do. Just let me do it and stop squirming!” Draco snapped. Harry paused and finally relented. Draco huffed a bit in satisfaction and hoisted Harry up off his feet and around. Harry let out a yelp when he was suddenly against Draco’s back and instantly wrapped his arms and legs around the slender yet powerful body beneath him. “Just hold on, Harry. I won’t let you fall,” Draco assured him.Draco suddenly moved and Harry yelped again, his hold tightening. He did his best to ignore the strong muscles beneath his limbs or the silky yet tangled hair by his face. Draco wove through the rocks and crevices with incredible speed and confidence but Harry couldn’t help but hold on as tight as he could. It wasn’t the same as flying or even riding a hippogriff. There were uneven movements and then sudden jerks and freefalls that made Harry’s heart try and escape his chest.Suddenly it occurred to Harry he could have just called his broom and flown down but seeing as how Draco was already over halfway down the hole he figured it was a bit too late. Draco braced himself on a rock before pushing off entirely and Harry actually screamed a little before they landed on the flat ground. Harry heard a dark little chuckle and slapped Draco upside the head. “You did that on purpose!” he hissed, not even noticing his slip into parsel tongue.“Yes, I did,” Draco replied smugly.“You ass,” Harry spat.“Oh come now, I thought you liked a little adventure,” Draco said with another chuckle.“I don’t like adventure I just always seem to find them!” Harry corrected as he squirmed. “Let me down, Draco,” he said, switching back to English again without realizing it.“Why? It’s faster this way,” Draco said.“Because I don’t want you carrying me,” Harry said.Draco sighed some but let his grip on Harry’s legs loosen so that the other man could get off his back. Harry carefully stepped over the large loops of Draco’s tail and brushed off his clothes. “Where to then?” Draco asked quietly.Harry sighed, realizing he’d again hurt Draco’s feelings without meaning to. He kept forgetting that Draco was somewhat more vulnerable than he was used to. “I’m sorry, Dray, I didn’t mean for that to sound like that.”“Forget it, Harry. Let’s just go,” Draco said. “It’s cold out here.”Harry would have protested again but realized Draco was right. The smaller man gestured down a narrow opening and began to walk. “This way,” he said. It was a bit dark so Harry lit his wand as they made their way through the cave. The air was growing moister and warmer and he could hear Draco’s shivering being to slow down some. It was still there but not as bad as before. After several minutes of walking, the raw rock of the cave turned into the smooth carved stone of man made walls. Or, in this case, a very large pipe. Harry didn’t bother to say anything and just continued to lead the way into the sewers. There weren’t really many turns to remember and soon Harry and the Gorgon that had once been a human came to the large central chamber. “This is it,” Harry said, ignoring the large skeleton off to the side and the rather unsettling carvings.“It’s wet,” Draco stated though he followed behind Harry silently.“Well, still better than outside, yeah?” Harry asked as he waved his wand a few times at some debris and formed a good-sized fire pit and conjured a fire inside of it.Draco hissed wordlessly and went to the fire, wrapping his entire body around the pit before leaning on his own tail. “Much better than outside,” he agreed begrudgingly. He arranged his blankets over the thick ring of his body circling the fire before settling again. “Thank you for this, Harry…” he whispered almost inaudibly.“Of course,” Harry said instantly. “We’ll get you fixed up, Draco. Promise.”“Even if you don’t, I can’t repay you enough for this,” Draco replied.Harry gave him a smile despite the fact that Draco wasn’t looking his way. “I have to get back. I have classes to teach in the morning. I’ll have a house elf bring you some food and be back tomorrow evening. I promise,” Harry said.Draco was silent for a moment before moving almost silently. Harry wasn’t sure why Draco would leave the warmth of the fire for even a moment but soon got his answer. Draco’s eyes were shut as he slid over to where Harry was standing. His hand came up slowly and Harry decided to remain still and see what his ex would do. Draco’s fingers brushed over Harry’s jaw line and slowly moved up to cradle Harry’s cheek. Harry opened his mouth to attempt a protest at the familiar touch but he didn’t get the chance when Draco’s mouth settled over his in a tender kiss.Harry froze, feeling the contact all the way from his head to his toes. All thought vanished as Draco’s cool lips gently moved over his. To Harry’s surprise, Draco didn’t attempt to deepen it hardly at all and kept it sweet and soft. “Thank you, Harry…” Draco whispered before pulling back entirely.“S-sure,” Harry said before hurrying away, glad that Draco couldn’t see his burning blush. It was only after Harry had summoned his broom and flown back to the front of the school that he realized that Draco had told him thank you in English. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
