Chapter 11. Memories
The sound of a fire crackling in the background met her ears as she slowly began to open her eyes. It took a moment to gather her senses and remember that the bed she was snuggled into wasn’t her own. The night’s activities came rushing back as she sat up and stretched, she felt a little sore but nothing a nice hot shower couldn’t remedy. She sat there on the bed for a moment still yawning and rubbing sleep from her eyes, the blanket falling down to pool around her hips leaving her breasts exposed to the chill of the dungeons. Even with a fire crackling and the summer heat outside she could still feel her teeth begin to chatter, and decided quickly to dress and make her way back to her own familiar quarters and their warmth.
Her dress and knickers were folded neatly on a chair by the fireplace, her shoes settled on top. It felt strange to wake in such unfamiliar surroundings and then find her things stacked ready for her to leave. No kiss good morning, no spooning, nothing to indicate that their night meant anything to him. If she wasn’t married to the man just yesterday she would have been sure she’d just experienced what the muggles called a ‘One Night Stand’. She felt a little sad at the emptiness of it all, but then what did she really expect? Snape could never be described as a kind man, and one night of sex wasn’t going to change that.
With a solemn sigh she redressed and made her way upstairs to her own quarters, anxious for a shower and then some breakfast in the Great Hall.

Severus sat in his usual place at the staff table sipping a cup of tea and reading the front page of that morning’s Daily Prophet. The Great Hall was empty of students and for the most part pleasantly quiet. McGonagall and a few Professors were seated further down the table from him, embroiled in a deep conversation about the rights of Vampires.
Minerva would occasionally glance over towards him and look at the empty chair where Celes usually sat, she was obviously curious as to why his new wife hadn’t joined him for breakfast. Snape had considered waking her that morning, but she looked so comfortable snuggled into his blanket that he just decided to gather up her clothing and leave her be. So he showered, dressed, and made his way upstairs for a bite to eat before the chore of helping her pack and taking her along to Spinners End.
And there really was no doubt in his mind that helping her pack was going to be a chore, even with magic to make things easier. She obviously had a great love of clothing, and he could only imagine how many shoes she’d want to take along.
He looked up from his paper at the sound of the door opening and closing, and saw the woman herself making her way to the staff table to settle in beside him. She seemed cheerful enough as he watched her out of the corner of his eye, but she was uncharacteristically quiet. Any other morning she’d smile annoyingly at him and tell him good morning, but today she just began serving herself some eggs, bacon, and toast without so much as a glance in his direction.
He assumed it was something he’d done and let his attention drift back to his paper. If it was really all that important he was sure she’d talk his ears off about it the moment they were alone anyway, so there was no need to get into the details now.

After breakfast they walked together upstairs to her quarters in complete silence. He stopped in her doorway and watched her closely as she began levitating clothes and shoes to rest neatly in luggage bags set out on her bed. She still hadn’t uttered one word to him, which normally would have been cause for celebration in his book, but it felt uncomfortably awkward. Not quite knowing what to do or say in such an odd situation he decided it best to make the packing go by faster.
A wardrobe sat against a wall not far from the bed, and that’s where he decided to place his attention. He walked over and placed his hand around the knob,
“Oh wait—“
Her warning came a moment too late. As soon as he’d pulled on the door a flurry of multicolored clothing, hats, and scarves burst forth from the wardrobe and pulled him to the ground. He couldn’t see anything for the thick blanket of clothing covering his entire body, and could barely make out the sound of Celes’ voice as she rushed over to his side.
She pulled the clothing and hats away enough to see his extremely frustrated looking expression, and couldn’t contain a fit of laughter when she saw a pink lacy bra hanging off his shoulder. A touch of color lit his cheeks as he snatched the bra from his shoulder and flung it across the room, making Celes laugh even harder and fall to her knees beside him clutching her stomach.
“Stop laughing and help me find my wand in this mess!”
He seemed dangerously angry but it only made her laughter come down to fits of giggles that she tried in vain to stifle with her hand. Trying to ignore her he began flinging away clothing, hats, and scarves in an attempt to find his wand.
“Don’t be so grumpy, I’ll help you find it!”
She was watching him with an extremely amused look on her face and started helping him sift through the mess. Their hands eventually met while frantically searching and she lifted her gaze to meet his own. He looked so adorably frazzled that she couldn’t help herself, and leaned in to capture his frowning lips in a soft kiss.
Forgetting his wand in the moment he wrapped his arms around her waist and rolled her over to rest on her back underneath him. Her cheeks were still red from laughing. He pressed his lips against hers in a harsh embrace, biting her bottom lip roughly to assert his dominance and push any further traces of amusement at his expense away. She didn’t seem to mind the small bit of pain, in fact it made her moan into his kiss and wrap her arms tightly around his neck pulling him in deeper.
Before they could get too carried away though she squeaked and pulled away. Her hand left his neck and began to rummage underneath her bottom for something. He raised an eyebrow in bewilderment as she pulled out his wand and grinned triumphantly.
“Told you I’d help you find it!”
He took it from her and stood up, leaving her still laying on the mess of clothes and pouting,
“We have plenty of time for packing you know…”
He looked down at her and sighed before reaching his arm out and helping her to her feet.
“Priorities Celes, finish the work now and maybe I’ll shag you later.”
He turned to begin cleaning the mess with his wand and smirked at her expression, he really did enjoy riling her up.
Grumbling something under her breath she too got to work on the task at hand, and soon enough the luggage bags were full to bursting with so many shoes and clothes that Snape wondered if his little house could even hold it all.
“I sincerely hope that’s it. If I have to stuff yet another identical pair of high heels in there I think I’m going to off myself….”
“Yea, what a shame that would be,” She said in a thickly sarcastic tone while rolling her eyes.
He was plainly not amused by her sarcasm and scowled at her before flicking his wand towards the luggage and shrinking them down to fit into his pocket.

Cokeworth, being a primarily Muggle town, was not to be accessed by Apparition because of the threat that a Muggle could witness it. Instead, Snape’s small brick home on Spinners End was accessed by the floo in McGonagall’s office. Floo always made her feel dizzy and nauseous, and she was very surprised when Severus placed a hand on her shoulder to steady her and keep her from falling over once she’d entered his home. It was such a warm, kind gesture that for a moment she’d forgotten whose hand it actually was.
Once the sick feeling had passed and she was able to stand without fear of collapsing, she took a moment to survey her surroundings. She was standing in a dimly lit sitting room filled with old, dusty, mismatched furniture and an overall air of neglect. His home, much like he himself, felt cold and unwelcoming.
Dust and cobwebs seemed to be as much a part of the décor as any of the pieces of old furniture sitting in the room, and it took an immense amount of self control on Celes’ part not to start throwing out cleaning spells in a frenzy. She knew she’d go mad if she had to leave the place as it was, but decided that an argument about redecorating could wait until Snape had forgotten about being buried in her clothing.
He watched her intently as she observed the sitting room, and could easily tell she was uncomfortable with the shabby environment. He knew cleaning and redecorating spells, but the place held so many bad memories for him that he felt any effort on his part to make it feel like home would be futile. How could someone truly feel comfortable in a place where every corner reminded them of abuses from the past?
When he walked into the kitchen memories of his mother cowering by the stove, begging not to be hit again flooded his mind and so he preferred not to go in there. His old childhood bedroom, a place anyone should be able to walk into and have fond memories, served only as a reminder of his father’s cruelty towards him when his mother was too weak to protect him anymore. Every room of the small, brick home on Spinners End held ghosts of a ruined childhood for Severus Snape, so to him no amount of Scouring Charms could ever make a difference, so what was the point?
The only reason he continued to return to the neglected house year after year was because just down the street, in a field now overgrown with tall grasses and weeds, he first laid eyes on Lily Evans. The house held only painful reminders, but outside in the open fields and by the river fond memories of a childhood spent with Lily could be conjured up. His thoughts went back to one of the last conversations he shared with Albus Dumbledore,
“After all this time?”
“Always…”
And he meant every word of it. His willingness to step foot in this lonely, dusty, old house on Spinners End attested to that.
Celes looked up at Snape and noticed that his gaze was fixed on something off into the distance, his eyes were glazed over in deep thought. She placed her hand gently on his chest just above where his heart lay and could feel it beating against her palm. He turned his face to meet her gaze and what she saw there for the briefest of moments startled her, he looked sad and vulnerable. She’d never seen him look that way before, but just as quickly as it had come, his expression reverted back to its usual look of cold indifference.
He placed his hand on hers and removed it from his chest as though disgusted with the contact, but in truth he was unhappy with how comforting the warmth of her palm had felt. For the part he played in the death of Lily Evans he didn’t deserve the comfort of her kindness, he deserved to live alone with his guilt.

After a quiet dinner, and an hour spent unpacking her things into the room he’d given her, they finally settled into his bedroom for the night.
She had wanted to finish what they’d started earlier atop the messy pile of her clothing, but the memory of his morose coal-black eyes made her decide to leave him be for the night. He was lying on his side with his back to her, and her eyes traced the fabric of his midnight blue pajamas. As kindhearted as she was, she ached to reach out and touch him, to let him know that she was there if he needed her. But Severus Snape was a stubborn and prideful man, he always hid his emotions and let no one too close. She knew if she tried to comfort him in any way he’d just rebuke her and snarl something vicious to keep her away. With a soft sigh she rolled over to face the wall and drifted off to sleep.
I really enjoyed writing this chapter because I think it really goes deeper into Snape's thoughts and past. I also think it adds more to the burgeoning relationship between both Celes and Snape. My thought process is that even though they both had this professor/student past that was pretty horrible for Celes, she's still a Hufflepuff at heart and her kindness will always get the better of her. A Gryffindor would probably be a lot less sympathetic towards him, but in my mind a former Hufflepuff would back down a lot more and be a lot more understanding of the motivations behind someone like Snape's cruelty.
Anyway I know I say this a lot but it's only because I haven't gotten a lot of reviews and I'm not really sure how people feel about the story because I'm not really getting a lot of feedback so please review if you could.
