Chapter Eleven
Severus Snape moved like a furious black cloud of doom through the hallways of Hogwarts. It’s most certain that if there had been students in attendance, their houses would likely no longer have points once they crossed his path. He charged into his own office to find Hermione there with Ginny Potter, who was laughing along with several of the former headmasters in their portraits and the deputy headmistress Minerva McGonagall.
“So there I was standing in front of my entire graduating class, having given one of the finest valedictorian speeches heard by man or beast never once realizing that my robes were caught up into the muggle pantyhose I insisted on wearing and was mooning all of the staff of Oxford.” She took a sip of the tea she was given, adding, “Top that.”
“As much as I would enjoy embarrassing myself by telling such colorful stories of my past, we have better things to do at the moment,” Severus said in a cool voice. “Why the bloody hell did you have someone else send a patronus and not you?”
Professor McGonagall exclaimed in outrage, as did several of the paintings of headmasters and mistresses. Professor Dumbledore only smiled to himself. It was clear as day that the boy cared for the witch. Dare he say, even love her?
“I couldn’t without endangering everyone at the house,” she told him, getting to her feet.
Still not being completely steady, Hermione nearly toppled. Severus was next to her and holding her in a flash. “What happened to you?” he demanded quietly.
“Someone doused Ginny and myself with a truth serum, but unlike what I first thought it isn’t Veritaserum. I was given that before and it never made me feel this off balance,” she told him. “And what’s worse, I have a tracking spell on me that can be called a Trojan horse.” He helped her to sit down again, listening to what she was telling him. “Minerva and I both studied it. Neither one of us has ever seen anything like this before in our lives. It’s a tracking spell that can attach itself to a patronus. So I couldn’t have sent one to you without giving away the location of where Lucius is to whomever hit me with the spell.” Reaching out, she caressed his face with her knuckles. “And it took so long, because I didn’t want to call you until I was sure that it wouldn’t latch onto another person.”
“Is Poppy here?” he asked Minerva.
“Off at that conference we spoke of last,” she reminded him. “But her new assistant is here.”
It was Ginny who scoffed, “I know a fair bit more than Lavender.” Blushing she added, “Please don’t tell Ron I said that. The two of them are back on again.”
Severus had expected Hermione to have said something, but looked down to find the witch sound asleep. Scooping her up, he said, “Will Mrs. Potter need assistance as well?”
“No, I’m fine,” she said casually as she stood up. “I just can’t shut up.”
Severus bit his tongue on the acerbic comment he was going to make about that being the norm. Turning he left the office, leaving Minerva to get the youngest Weasley to the medical wing. It was during the journey over that Hermione turned in his embrace and hugged him, resting her head on his shoulder.
“Hmm, you smell good,” she whispered. “Like sandalwood, bayberry, and just the tiniest bit like rosewater. Not the sweet smelling one women use, but the kind for potions making. That smells lovelier in my opinion.”
“That last bit is you, Hermione,” he murmured. “You’re the one that smells slightly of rose water.”
“Mmm, usually I smell like vanilla, cinnamon, and orange,” she pointed out to him in a mumble. “It’s my body wash.”
“Yes, I know…” His words trailed off. “Merlin, why didn’t I think of that before?”
To which he received only a snore as an answer from Hermione.
By the time they reached the medical wing, Severus knew exactly what they were dealing with. He left Hermione there in the care of Lavender Brown with the express instructions to let her continue slumbering. Soon enough Ginny joined her there along with Minerva, who was wishing the youngest Weasley would fall asleep as well. Luckily soon after arriving at the hospital wing so did her husband, allowing Professor McGonagall to escape unnoticed.

Two hours later Severus returned to the hospital wing with two vials of antidote in hand. Handing one swiftly to Ginny, he went over to Hermione. Waking her up, he had her sitting up and taking the antidote he had brewed for the two witches.
“What were they given?” Harry asked, as he helped Ginny by taking out the plug on the glass tube.
“It’s an obscure truth potion that was invented by one of the Borgias.” Hermione curled up in his lap, resting her head on his shoulder.
Blinking as if waking from a very long sleep, Hermione asked sounding horrified, “We were given Honeymooner’s Death?”
“What is that?” Harry asked, as he slipped his arms around his wife and securing himself in the knowledge that she was still there alive and well.
“Yes, that you were,” Severus murmured. “It was a truth potion that could turn poisonous once the person it’s administered to has sex.”
“First it kills the drinker and then the person they had sex with,” Hermione told her friend. “But it fell out of favor rather quickly when it was discovered that the antidote was only a concentrate of rosehips, lemon zest, and sugar. Something even a muggle could brew, which is more than likely the reason behind the fall out I imagine.” She went quiet for a moment. “This doesn’t make sense to me.” She pulled away from him, deep in thought as she kept talking. “With the tracking spell there was a certain logic to it. They want to find Lucius. But why did they douse Ginny and I with that particular potion?”
“Perhaps they wanted to kill Professor Snape?” Ginny suggested, which had both Harry turning green at her words only to completely blanch a few seconds later when the full impact of her words hit home.
“I could have been killed too,” Harry whispered.
“But I don’t think you were the target,” Hermione said, getting to her feet carefully. “And when I think of it, the potion didn’t hit your wife as hard as it did me. It could be that she was only given a fraction of a dose, which still works as a truth potion, but isn’t toxic to either party during sex.” Turning to Severus, she said, “It’s not well known that we’re involved, correct?”
He nodded, adding, “They will after today.”
“Yes, perhaps they’ll throw us a parade,” she replied, with a saucy wink which had him smiling. Turning to the others, she said, “There is no logic to this potion being given. They haven’t been going after Severus in any fashion and they would have no reason to believe that Lucius is sleeping with me.” But then it hit her. “Draco.”
“What about him?” Severus asked, sounding brittle as he did so.
“Draco likes to talk about his seduction plans for women, is that not true?”
Frowning, Harry said, “I’ve heard a few things over the years, but what does that have to do with anything?”
“As have I,” Hermione stated. “Which is odd, as I’m not one to read gossip rags. But word gets around about his plans and people, not necessarily the individuals he would want to know, discover that information too. But let’s say his latest plans involve me.” She looked into Severus’s narrowing black eyes. “If Draco got his way and slept with me, I would in essence be the gun used to kill the Malfoy heir. It’s the only theory that makes sense.”
“Whomever attacked Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy is going after Draco as well?” Ginny whispered.
“Looks like it,” Severus muttered. “It would seem Lucius and Narcissa weren’t the only one’s they were trying to kill. They’re trying to destroy the entire Malfoy family.”
