“So, Miss Menadue, what have you done to anger Lucius Malfoy?” Though Dumbledore was smiling, his blue eyes were lacking their customary twinkle.
Lyra’s tongue nervously darted across her lips as she instinctively moved back towards the silent Sirius behind her. “You – you know already, Albus?”
“Oh, yes.” The elderly headmaster placed a hand on her shoulder to guide her towards the parlour with Sirius instantly falling into step behind them. “Lyra, I have just had a visit from Severus Snape – and he in turn came directly from an interview with Mr. Malfoy.”
“And...” She swallowed hard and wrapped her arms around her uncomfortably hot body. “And what did he have to say?”
“A great deal, my dear; none of it boding well for you.” Dumbledore’s eyes widened as he realised that Sirius was still with them. “Sirius, if you would not mind, I think perhaps Lyra would like a moment’s privacy to discuss this with me.”
“No,” she said instantly, clasping her hands tightly together to battle the urge to reach out for him. “No, it’s okay. He can stay.”
He flashed her a tight smile, his fists clenched at his sides in proof that he was battling the same thing that she was even as he looked up at the older man. “I know what’s going on with Malfoy, Dumbledore. Lyra came here last night after fleeing from him – we talked about all that happened, and I’d like to know what he said to Snape about it.”
Dumbledore tilted his head to the side as his gaze flickered between the two of them, but Lyra forced her face to stay impassive as she nodded in agreement.
“Very well,” he said eventually. “I do think that this is something that will have to be discussed within the confines of the Order, so if you are happy for Sirius to hear all that Lucius said to Severus then so be it.”
She exhaled in relief, certain that she would be unable to face up to all that was coming without Sirius at her side. As Sirius closed the parlour door and began to pace restlessly around the confines of the room, she leaned against the blackened fireplace and ran a hand through her loose hair. “Go on then, Albus,” she said tiredly. “Let’s hear it.”
The headmaster popped a small yellow sweet into his mouth and rolled it on the tip of his tongue before he relaxed into the high-backed armchair and began to speak. “Lucius is infuriated, Lyra. Severus tells me that he has rarely known him to show such reckless rage, and with all that they have seen and done together that is saying something.”
Lyra shivered when she saw a dark scowl pass over Sirius’s taut face. “Did he tell Professor Snape why he’s so angry with me?” she asked.
“Oh, yes. If you will excuse my talk of such intimate affairs, Lucius told Severus that he has wanted to take you for his mistress for many moons now. He spoke somewhat incoherently, but Severus made mention of a kiss you and he shared before?”
“Against my will!” She blushed hotly as both men stared at her intently. “At the World Cup last year when the Death Eaters marched against the Muggles, I joined the fight and did battle against them. One of them disarmed me and forced themselves upon me; I didn’t know who it was until last night, but Lucius told me that it had been him.”
Lyra heard Sirius suck in a sharp breath, but she could not comfort or even look at him.
“That would be it, then. He told Severus that he has been trying to win himself an audience with you ever since in the somewhat arrogant belief that you would gladly accept all he was offering to you, Lyra. I take it that when he made that proposal last night, you did not react favourably?”
“Far from it.” She buried her face in her hands as the memory arose with full force in her mind.”I told him to leave me alone, but I don’t think he knows how to take no for an answer.”
“It is an answer that a man with pockets as deep as his rarely hears.” Dumbledore sighed heavily as he absently ran his thumb along the length of his gnarled wand.”Lucius will take no for an answer, Lyra. Severus said that he is utterly determined to make you his, no matter what the cost. He says he wants you to the extent that only one thing takes more prominence in his mind; and that is his orders from Voldemort. You are second only to that.”
Her eyes widened. The realisation that Lucius wanted her so badly sent an unwelcome twist of heat coursing through her body that horrified her, for she knew its source but refused to admit to it, even to herself. Desperate to ignore it, she bit down hard upon her lip before lifting her head and looking up at the watchful headmaster once more. “But why did he tell all this to Professor Snape?”
“Because Severus is one of the Order, and therefore the closest person to you that Lucius has access to. He wants to Severus to tell him everything about you, Lyra – where you spent last night, when you will next be on guard duty, where you go when you’re not at work...”
“Basically, he’s determined to get me on my own again to force the issue.”
Dumbledore smiled sadly. “I am afraid so. Forgive me, but I must ask; are his attentions to you unwelcome?”
“Yes!” Lyra leaned forwards with a furtive glance towards Sirius that she was too slow to prevent. “Albus, I know all too well what he is and all that he stands for – and even were it not for that, I still don’t think I’d be interested. I made that very plain to him but it didn’t seem to have any effect.”
“When Lucius sets his mind on something, he is not easily dissuaded. It was a trait I noticed in him when he was a student at Hogwarts and one that has only strengthened since then.”
“He left a message saying as much on Lyra’s bed and then went to her department in search of her today as well.”
Sirius’s grim words were, to Lyra, laden with bitter jealousy, but Dumbledore seemed not to have noticed all that went unsaid. “Is that so?” he asked, a flicker of unease passing across his heavily lined face. “Did you speak to him, Lyra?”
“No. Madam Bones let me Floo away from her office, so I managed to leave without crossing paths with him. I don’t imagine that I can evade him forever, though.”
“I am afraid not, not when I must ask that you attend work and do your duty standing guard over the prophecy as normal. We are too few to lose the valuable help you can give, Lyra.”
Sirius looked as if he was about to heatedly argue, but she jerked her head from side to side in a mute plea for him to stay silent. To her great relief, he allowed her to speak. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, Albus,” she said, though she flinched out of the corner of her eye she saw Sirius thrust his hands into his pockets. “I want to help, you know I do, and I won’t let Malfoy turn me into a prisoner.”
“Good.” Approval shone in Dumbledore’s eyes. “In that case, I know now what I will recommend going forwards. First, though, is there anything else you want to tell me?”
Lyra sensed that Sirius had come to a halt where he stood and his eyes had fixed upon her, but she dared not look at him. “Anything else?” she said carefully. “No, I don’t think so.”
Dumbledore peered at her over the top of his half-moon glasses. For a moment, she thought she saw a small smile pass across his face, but as soon as it had arrived it was gone again. Perhaps it had never been there at all. “Very well,” he said. “Lyra, if you do not object then I think it would be best if you stay here at Grimmauld Place when you are not at work. It has far more protection than your cottage. Malfoy is unable to get you alone if you are here, and he knows it.”
“That sounds fine.”Her heart leapt as she finally allowed herself to look at Sirius once more. “Sirius, you don’t mind, do you? I don’t want to impose.”
His face had reddened so furiously she felt sure it would betray all there was between them to Dumbledore, but when he finally spoke no trace of the lust she knew he felt was in his voice. “No, I don’t mind if it keeps you safe. There’s plenty of bedrooms, after all.”
Though that was true, there was only one she wanted to be in – and she was certain that Sirius would not allow her to be anywhere else.
“Then it is settled.” With a vigour that belied his advanced age Dumbledore sprang up and offered Lyra his hand. “Shall we go through to the kitchen, then? I have had a busy day and there has not yet been the opportunity to eat. Unless my nose deceives me – and it rarely does – something is cooking.”
Sirius’s face relaxed into a wide grin. “It is, Albus, but I wouldn’t count on it being edible. Tonks is trying to rustle something up with one of Molly’s recipes. The last I saw, Dung was ducking for cover when the saucepan exploded.”
The headmaster’s face dropped and Lyra laughed quietly, the tension finally leaving her body as she took his hand to stand before moving towards Sirius as if compelled. Though the need to keep what was happening private was as strong as it had been in the morning, she was beginning to doubt that it would be successful. She could not suppress the urge to steal even the chastest of touches from him, for her hunger for him was overwhelming.
It seemed that he was suffering just as badly, for he made to guide her upstairs when they reached the hallway. But before they could slip away the door opened for more members of the Order to stream in and the moment was lost.
The rest of the afternoon and evening flew by with next to no chance to speak to him, and no opportunity to be alone with him. Her frustration was almost at its peak by the time the dinner dishes had finally been cleared away and the assorted members of the Order had all settled around the table. Sirius was opposite her, a temptation she could resist no longer.
Whilst glancing in the opposite direction, she stretched out her feet to rest upon the seat of his broad thighs. His eyes widened, but he carried on his conversation with Bill Weasley on his left without missing a beat.
Emboldened by the slight, teasing lift of his eyebrows, she flexed out her toes to brush lightly against the shape of his cock that already hardening beneath his loose trousers. Lyra knew she was perilously close to becoming swept away with the lust that was clouding her judgement, so with a great effort she pulled back slightly and instead let her feet dance gently across the tense muscles of his thighs again.
She needed a distraction. If she stayed focussed upon nothing but Sirius, the need to be in his arms again would become impossible to conceal; so with a relaxed smile, she turned to her left and leaned forwards. “Alastor, would you pass me the Prophet when you’re done with it?”
The cragged former Auror sent it flying through the air towards her with a gruff nod. “I’ve read enough of its lies already, Miss Menadue. Have your fill of it.”
Lyra pulled her reading glasses out of her pocket and squinted at the paper, not failing to notice the way that Sirius’s breath quickened as she did so. She did not need to be a Legilimens to know the direction his thoughts were taking, for the continued teasing touch of her foot upon the inside of his thighs was deliberately steering it that way.
When she too had had enough of the vitriol the Daily Prophet was spewing about Dumbledore and Harry Potter, she set it aside and stretched out her arms over her head before slowly lowering them when Sirius finally looked at her directly. Lyra breathed in deeply, willing her face to show none of the fiery anticipation now coursing through her tense body. “I think I might head up to bed now. Sirius, shall I stay in the same room I had last night?”
A flicker of desperate hunger passed through his eyes before he brought himself under control. “Sure,” he said, his voice clipped and cool. “If you liked it there, then I see no reason for you to be anywhere else.”
Remus let a small snicker of laughter loose from his clenched lips, but even as Sirius turned to scowl at him it seemed that no-one else had heard it.
“That’s sorted, then,” she replied lightly. “I’ve been looking forward to bedtime all day, so I’ll say goodnight to you all now.”
Even as a chorus of goodnights rang out from around the table, Sirius’s pained groan was the only sound Lyra heard. She turned her head towards him as she stood up and a deep flush crept across her face. “See you in the morning, Sirius.”
His eyebrows contracted and he drained the last of his Butterbeer before he replied. “You will, Lyra. Shout if you need anything.”
“I’ll shout for you, yes.”
With that unspoken undercurrent running beneath their cryptic exchange, she left the kitchen and moved silently through the narrow hallways towards the staircase. She could have simply Apparated up to Sirius’s room, but the long walk through the house would while away some of the time before he too could extract himself from the company keeping them apart.
When she slipped into his bedroom, the Hippogriff’s head whipped towards her. “Hey, Buckbeak,” she said quietly. “It’s only me.” She stroked his feathered back until he settled back down and his eyes closed once more.
Unable to stand still when her body throbbed in anticipation of all the pleasures she knew were coming to her, Lyra set her wand down on the bedside table and allowed her eyes to close as she stripped away her clothing down to her underwear and counted down the seconds until he would come to her, barely able to breathe under the weight of the desire streaming through her veins to inflame every last inch of bare skin she exposed in readiness for him.
As she dropped her long dress to the floor, the door slowly swung open and Sirius strode towards her, a small smile upon his thin lips and a spark of awe in his already darkened eyes as they locked onto her. “So, you’ve been looking forward to bedtime then, my lovely little witch?”
Lyra moved into his waiting arms and insistently reached down to slip her hand beneath his trousers to brush away the swollen tip of his cock. With a strangled curse, Sirius thrust his hips into her hand and kissed her fiercely as he backed the both of them towards the bed. All trace of the smile he had worn was wiped away, but she willingly submitted to his every command. Nothing had ever thrilled her as much as doing precisely that, so she simply gave herself over to the inevitable explosion of lust that could not be defied.
When his lips finally broke away from hers, they were leaning against the bed post and both fighting for breath. He wrapped one arm around her to hold her against his chest as he rested his head on top of hers. “You’ve been a wicked tease tonight, Lyra,” he said, the smile that briefly returned to his face telling her how much he had enjoyed her efforts.
“I know. You aren’t complaining though.”
“Never.” He sighed quietly when she pulled her hand free of his trousers to touch his face instead. “Lyra, you drive me crazy. Merlin’s beard, if we didn’t have the nights to be together I don’t know what I’d do. I don’t want everyone knowing about us yet, but equally I don’t think I can hide all you make me feel much longer.”
“Then there is an us?”
Her shallow breath caught in her throat as he tensed against her. “I...I think there could be, sweetheart. But I want to find out at our own pace, without the pressure of other people’s expectations. Let’s just take this steady, okay?”
“So long as steady includes me being in your bed every night.”
“As if I’d want you to be anywhere else!” She knew he was thinking of Lucius when his face twisted, but she dared not speak his name and allow him to intrude upon this most precious of moments with Sirius. Finally, he relaxed and pulled his head back to look down at her. “You’ve taken off the glasses.”
Lyra laid her head on his shoulder as he captured a lock of her hair and wrapped it around his long finger. “I only need them for reading. Do you want me to put them back on?” she asked softly.
“No.” His eyes glazed over for a moment before he nodded decisively. “No, Lyra. I want you hiding nothing from me – I want every last dip and curve of your beautiful body exposed and available to me. And I want something else.”
“Tell me.”
“I want to know if you trust me, Lyra.”
She did. She pulled his head down towards her for one more lingering kiss before breaking away, breathless and dizzy with the strength of her longing for him. “Sirius, I’m yours,” she murmured, afraid to speak too loud for fear of breaking through the wonder that was woven around them. “Do as you want with me – I trust you.”
Sirius stepped back and reached into his pocket before he pointed his wand directly at her and inhaled deeply. “Imperio,” he whispered.
