Chapter Eleven: In Noctem
Harry opened his eyes slowly. He wasn't, at first, entirely sure where he was. The room was dark, surely it wasn't still night time? He had never lost his habit of waking with the sun that he had gained during his time with the Dursley's. Slowly he let his body adjust to his wakeful state before sitting up and rubbing sleep from his eyes, he found himself looking around an all too familiar room, stone walls with ancient gas lamps and boxes filled with dodgy Dark objects...He remembered returning to Malfoy Manor after dropping off the little girl with Ron. He yawned, messing his hair up even further before looking down at his side. Draco lay, wrapped in a blanket and shivering slightly. The room was so cold they had taken to sleeping beside each other to keep warm, the idea had been repulsive at first but need had driven them to desperate measures. He gazed down at the blond, seeing his hair unkempt as it tumbled around his pointed features. Harry cocked his head to the side slightly, admiring the way that platinum hair fell against a pale cheek and the way Draco's face was washed of all care and worry. He wandered briefly why Draco had chosen to follow Harry on this mission of potential self destruction, and he could only come up with one answer...that the man was filled with remorse and was trying to make up for the mistakes of the past.
The past...with that one word Harry was plunged into the nightmare...he could see the bodies, the blood, hear the screams and see them die. He lowered his head, trying to banish the gruesome image his imagination conjured as he thought of his children...
Albus lay on the floor, his glazed green eyes blank and staring, his little hands unmoving. Lily lay at his side, her hair burned away by some kind of horrific spell...Harry covered his face with his hands and gritted his teeth. He couldn't banish it. Despair claimed him and he could almost hear the soft hissing whisper of an awfully familiar voice, as if someone was whispering in his ear...
More blood on your hands, Harry...You will be unable to stop it. They will die...they will die all because Daddy was too weak! You are Weak Harry potter...weak and pathetic. You allow others to die for you...coward...always running away from the duties you yourself swore to uphold...running from your family because you were afraid...afraid of what these dreams meant...Whispers...whispers in the dead of night. You know what is to come...will you be strong enough? Will you be able to save them?
"No!" Harry groaned, curling in on himself as he tried to stop the voice. "Shut up! I'm not..."
"Harry!"
Stop lying to yourself, boy. Your fate is inevitable...you cannot fight it...
"Harry!"
"NO!" Harry almost screamed. His hands were ripped from his face and he found himself looking up at Draco, the blond looked terrified.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
Harry shook from head to foot, his eyes glazed and slightly uncomprehending. "N-no...I-I..." he shook his head and lowered it. "They're going to die." He whispered.
"They're not." Draco grabbed Harry's wrists tightly, his fingers almost bruising the soft flesh. He could feel the Auror's pulse racing violently against his fingers. "Harry, we can save them." He was afraid, Harry looked like he was on the edge of some kind of nervous breakdown. He had woken to hear some disturbingly familiar sounds issuing from the man at his side, that low hissing noise that made heat flare deep within Draco...that awfully familiar sound of a snake. He had looked over and seen Harry curled up and moaning. "Listen to me!" he shook the man slightly to emphasise his point. "We will not let them die! Together we will save them and prove your innocence! Do you understand me?"
Harry swallowed desperately but nodded. His green eyes sharpened and a hard look entered them, Draco found himself captured by that determined gaze, he was on his knees before Harry, looking down into his face. He still had hold of his wrists and slowly relaxed his grip, he found himself reluctant to let go so he let his fingers loosen only a little. Harry's eyes registered confusion and a small crease formed between his brows, his glasses lay at his side but his eyes were no less dim because of it. Draco found himself leaning closer, his hand releasing one of Harry's wrists to find itself shoved deep into the other man's hair where he gripped it tightly making Harry wince. "Dra-..." He went silent as Draco's eyes darkened like storm clouds and he found soft lips pressed, very lightly to his. Harry didn't move. Neither of them did. The pain in his skull from the grip Draco had on him was almost as pleasant as was the warmth of the blonde's breath against his lips. Harry's eyes half closed as he let whatever was happening, happen. He was pushed backwards onto the blankets, Draco slowly deepened the kiss, a heated tongue pressed itself into his mouth. Harry let his eyes fall closed, his mind hardly even registering much anymore, he was simply a mass of burning nerves, his body trembling beneath the weight above him. A soft moan slipped past his lips, Draco devoured it, his tongue tangling with Harry's in an age old dance. Finally Harry was released, Draco sat back on his knees, gazing with slightly blurred eyes at the dark haired man who remained lying on the floor where he'd been left. Slowly, Harry found his voice. "What happened?" He whispered, his words slurring slightly. "I don't...I'm not..." He shook his head and slowly sat up. He picked up his glasses and shoved them on. "Draco?"
Draco heard his name, spoken in that lightly husky voice, it made a shiver run down his spine and his tongue darted out to wet his lips. "I...I think..." He began slowly.
"Right." Harry muttered, pulling himself closer. He was frowning. "You...You should...stop." he muttered, still slightly breathless.
Draco smoothed hair back from his face and nodded, his grey eyes fixed firmly on a dark corner. "Yes..." he replied slowly.
"Not ready..." Harry said softly, looking in the opposite direction. "It...It was..."
"Nice." The word escaped him before he could stop it and it forced their eyes to meet. Draco flushed, a bright red blush that crept up his neck and to his cheeks. He frowned. "It never happened." He said firmly.
Harry nodded slowly. "Right." He agreed. His green eyes met grey again, they gazed at each other for a while, Draco's hands moved, as if he was going to pull Harry towards him but he ended up letting them fall back into his lap. Harry stood, straightening his clothes and feeling awkward, he had just kissed Draco...his lips still felt slightly tingly where they had met the blonds and he had to turn away to hide the blush creeping into his face. He berated himself for acting like a teenager.
"We should find them..." Draco said softly, he stood in a rustle of robes and swept towards the stairs. "Come on..."
Harry took a breath and followed. They had gained quite a bit of knowledge of the Order from their research and Harry was certain that they wished to lead him into some kind of trap so they would allow him to find his children...but whether alive or dead he didn't know. They searched London. Apparating from one spot to another, hiding beneath the invisibility cloak, but Harry was now finding it very distracting. He was always pressed close to Draco, their skin brushing, their eyes meeting for prolonged periods of time and it was all he could do to stop himself from gazing longingly at Draco's lips. He was acting like a child! Finally they found him. Brock was walking down the street, whistling to himself as the sunlight bathed the busy road, he strode purposefully towards an apparently abandoned house, but what most muggles would have taken for random graffiti Harry knew to be protective runes and the symbol of the Equitum Solis Surgentes. They crept forward cautiously as Brock entered the dilapidated building, he looked behind himself before slipping inside the door, Harry and Draco followed.
There was no magic protecting the entrance, as Harry knew there wouldn't be, after all they wanted to be found. They followed Brock through the house, up the old creaking stairs and into a room where they heard soft voices and some laughter. They managed to slip into the room and Harry almost dived from under the cloak, and he would have if Draco hadn't been gripping his arm.
There sat the children; Lily beside her brother, gazing up at the men with terrified eyes while Albus sat there, shivering and crying silently. Both looked slightly roughed up, but both were alive. Ron's children were sitting quietly, confused by what was going on around them.
"Has he found us yet?" The tall blond man said from a corner.
Brock threw himself into a seat by the fire. "I have no idea, if he has he is being unusually cautious...normally he would charge in here with wand raised..."
"Yes, stupid fool. Always recklessly abandoning his own safety for others, anyone would think he had been driven mad by the Dark lord."
"He has been, Trevor." Brock said softly, grinning at the huddled group of children. "Can you not see it in those big green eyes of his? He is bordering on complete insanity...and I intend to push him over the edge."
"Ah yes, we are back, once again, to this mysterious plan you say the Dark Lord left you..." The blond shifted and gazed at Brock. "We have no proof that he left you with any plan..."
"The Dark Lord plans for all ends, Trevor. He saw the very slim chance that the boy would prevail and his body once again destroyed...however, now we can bring him back. With only one last ingredient..."
"His blood? The Dark Lord tried it before and it failed! This is ridiculous..."
"Not his blood, Trevor!" Brock sounded irritable. "The Dark Lord is after his body."
Trevor gazed incredulously at Brock, as if he had gone insane. "What?"
Brock sighed contemptuously. "Potter has had a special connection with the Dark Lord since he was a baby, the connection forged when the Killing Curse backfired. He intends to use that connection once again to re-establish his bond to the physical realm, once he has that he can claw his way back."
"As a ghost?"
"No. He can use Potter's physicality and his magical essence to create a new body...one he can inhabit and control as well as his original one."
Trevor looked doubtful. "I do not deny that the Dark Lord was a great and powerful man, but his obsession with Potter was worrying...many of us whispered about it. It was unhealthy."
"Unhealthy? The boy was in his way! Why should he not wish for revenge when he was all but destroyed by a baby? No one can blame him..."
"Some have said..." Trevor began slowly, choosing his word with caution. "That the Dark Lord was after more than revenge, Brock."
"And what does that mean?" Brock snapped, losing patience. His eyes flashed and Lily squealed before Albus hugged her tightly to his chest.
The Adults ignored the children. "Well, I am merely repeating rumours, but people have said that the Dark Lord was fascinated by Potter...it was rumoured that he desired more than simply the boys destruction."
"Speak plain! I have no patience for your riddles."
Trevor smiled, bowing his head slightly. "Isn't it obvious? The Dark Lord wished, if he could have corrupted the boy, to make him his own."
Brock started at that, his eyes widened. "You lie."
Trevor shrugged. "I am merely speculating."
Draco's eyes widened as he listened, surely the man called Trevor couldn't actually believe that the Dark Lord wanted...no, it was a ridiculous notion. Harry seemed not to have listened, he was gazing intently at the children, his thoughts only on how to get them safe and free. Lily was now crying openly, her little hands tangled in her brother's coat, Hugo and Rose looked on in confusion as they hugged each other. "Al? Al...where's daddy? Why are we here? Al...please, I want to go home! I want to see Nanny! Please...I want my Daddy!" She sobbed desperately but Al couldn't comfort her, he was as lost as she was.
"Oh, shut up! Damnable children! I can't stand their pathetic cries! I have put up with it for hours...Brock, when will I be relieved of this tiresome duty?"
"When Gregor has finished work." Brock replied. "We must wait for Potter."
Trevor sighed heavily and shot a glare at Lily who narrowed her big brown eyes back at him. "You're a bad man!" She said loudly. "You're bad and evil and my Daddy catches bad men like you! He'll come and rescue us, he'll save us..."
"Lily! Hush!" Albus hissed, his eyes huge as he tried to quiet his sister.
"No! Al, he's a nasty man and his mummy should tell him off! He's mean!"
"Lily..." Albus groaned as Trevor laughed.
"Girl, my mother died like yours did a long time ago. And when your 'daddy' comes here to save your pretty little hide we will kill him. Do you understand? By coming to rescue you he's going to make you all orphans!" He laughed and Lily had tears falling down her cheeks. "Not so brave now, are you girl?"
"You'll see!" Lily shouted suddenly, shaking free of her brothers restricting embrace. "My daddy's brave! He'll punish you all like he did James when he made Al's teddy bear come alive and scared him!"
Brock and Trevor merely laughed. "She is very much like her mother...that blood-traitor bitch was just as cocky."
That was it. Something inside Harry snapped and he yanked himself free of Draco who groaned as Harry stepped out from under the cloak. "She is, just like her mother." He said softly standing before the shocked Order members.
"Dad!" Al gasped, his green eyes wide and shining. Lily smiled and shot a triumphant glare in the direction of the two men.
"Albus, Lily...take Hugo and Rose and go with Draco...please." Harry said softly, but his voice held an undeniable note of command and his children couldn't deny him.
"Dad! No! I-It's a trap!" Albus said suddenly fearful. His green eyes, so much like Harry's own and filled with terror. "They meant to make you come after us!"
Harry turned his back on Brock and Trevor, deliberately ignoring them as he crouched, taking his sons hands in his own. "I know, Al." He said softly. "I know what they want...but I promised to keep you safe...I promised to return Rose and Hugo to Ron and Hermione..." He turned and pulled Lily to his side. "Go. Both of you. Get back to the Burrow where you'll be safe...and promise me, promise me that whatever you hear, however much you may want to, don't look back!"
"Harry, I will stay..." Draco began slowly.
Harry looked up at him. "No. Please, take my children out of here...Draco, I'm trusting them to you."
Draco bit his bottom lip but he couldn't deny the plea in Harry's voice. "Alright...but as soon as they're safe, I'm coming back! Do you hear me?"
Harry smiled softly. "Thank you, I'll never forget this. Consider the debt you owe me repaid."
Draco blinked at him. "Don't talk like that!" He said suddenly feeling afraid.
Harry simply smiled and released his daughter and son, "Go with Draco." He whispered and pushed them forward.
"Now wait just a minute!" Brock said suddenly, overcoming the shock of being ignored.
Harry stood, turning slowly and lifting his wand. "In exchange for my compliance, Mr. Brock, you must let my children leave." He said firmly. "If not, you will have a fight on your hands."
Brock's eyes narrowed as he deliberated carefully. "You are in no situation to make demands, potter."
"Oh? How badly does the Dark Lord want me?"
"Very badly, boy. And when he is resurrected you will suffer the brunt of his wrath, he will finally have his revenge."
Harry smiled. "Then let my children leave. They have no place in his plans."
Draco saw Harry's determination and swore softly under his breath. Brock looked at him. "Mr. Malfoy...When the Dark Lord returns he will be most unimpressed by your part in this..."
Malfoy sneered. "Come now, Mr. Brock...let us not play at childish games here. The Dark Lord used to hold my father in high esteem, we are a pureblood family as old as the Black's and I assure you he will have no wish to spill anymore pure blood..." he paused, his sneer becoming more pronounced. "However, a man with lineage as dubious as yours must be afraid of what he would do if he were to find out that your own mother had Muggle blood in her."
Brock went white. "You have no proof..."
Malfoy's smirk was almost evil. "Oh, don't I?" He said softly. "I would be more afraid if I were in your shoes, Brock." He turned away from the man and back to Harry. "Harry..." He muttered.
Harry glanced at Draco and smiled. "Go on, get out of here..." He said. "If Voldemort returns, he'll be nowhere near as powerful as he once was...he no longer has the security of his Horcrux's. Trust me, he will be easier to destroy."
"But what about you?" Draco said quietly, masking his feelings securely. "What will happen to you?"
Harry had no need to speak as he looked Draco in the eyes. "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." He spoke quietly, only his children knowing the words, but Draco sighed heavily.
"Farewell, Potter." Malfoy replied and turned away, herding the children before him.
"Wait!" Albus tore himself free of Draco's hand and ran back to Harry. He looked up at his father, frowning slightly. "You're gunna come back, right?" He said. "You're not going to go away forever like Mum...are you? You said you wouldn't leave us."
Harry closed his eyes, his wand falling to his side. "Al..." he muttered, kneeling before his son, smoothing that hereditary messy black hair from his eyes. He was the only one of his children who mirrored him. "Tell you brother...tell him I'm sorry. I am sorry...I couldn't get to spend more time with you."
"You're..." Al bit down on the rest of his sentence. "Dad..."
"Everything will be fine, Al." Harry kissed him on forehead. "I will never, ever leave you! Remember that no matter what, your mother and I will be here..." He pressed his hand to Al's chest and watched the boy bite down on his bottom lip as he fought tears. Harry nodded and Draco took Al's shoulder and pulled him away, Al let him...he took one last look over his shoulder and saw Harry watching them leave, his wand lying at his side on the floor and the two Order members standing either side of him. Once they were out of sight Harry climbed to his feet, his wand clutched loosely in his fingers. "I'm making my kids orphans...you'd best give me a damned good reason for doing so."
Outside the sun was high in the sky, which was a bright clear blue and seemed to mock them as Draco turned to look once more at the building. He sucked in a sharp breath before letting it out and taking a firm hold of his tumultuous emotions. He looked around, and found a brick lying on the floor he pointed his wand at it. "Portus." He muttered and watched it glow and shake before returning to an apparently normal brick. Then he turned to Albus, the eldest and withdrew a wrinkled piece of parchment from his pocket. "Albus, I want you and the others to take the Portkey back to the Burrow, and I would ask you to do me a favour." Albus looked confused and sad but he wasn't crying, he nodded. "Take this..." Draco placed the sealed envelope into Albus' hand. "Take it and have it delivered to my Mother..."
Albus looked down and saw a name written on the front. "It's addressed to Scorpius..."
Draco smiled. "It is some things I...things I have been too cowardly to say to him. My mother will know when he is old enough to read the contents."
"Mr. Malfoy?" Albus said suddenly, his green eyes too much like Harry's. "You're not, you know."
"I'm not what?"
"You're not a coward...My dad said you were forced to do horrible things, and...and he says that you're alright really, even for a Slytherin. So...so...can...can you look after him? Because James will bully me if he thinks I left Dad on his own..."
Draco was slightly startled by that but he smiled. "I will do my best."
Albus looked like he wanted to say more but he shook his head. "Dad won't leave us." He said, mostly to himself as he gripped Lily's hand, he smiled. "He promised he wouldn't."
"Take the Portkey..." Draco whispered and pushed them over to it where they all placed their fingers in the old brick.
