Severus Snape was pacing in front of Dumbledore's desk, running what he had just heard over in his mind. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. The old fool was manipulative as ever, and it was maddening. To let four students be learning such things was appalling. Albus watched as he paced, before sighing, and clearing his throat.
“Severus please sit down” the raven haired man did so, glowering at the old man.
“You knew all along she was teaching them this?” he stated and the older wizard nodded.
“Yes, I know Alex is teaching the four of them about the Amulets of the Elements, but I believe that it is right for her to do so.”
“What makes you think that?!” he demanded.
“Severus, I will not survive this war. I do not plan on it” the old wizard closed his eyes, before opening them and staring at the potion master with a grave face, “I am getting too old to continue on Severus, and I fear I do not have many years left in me. I am a hundred and fifteen years old. I have lived far beyond my time and I beg you to put this rivalry you have with the Kruss family behind you for Harry's sake.”
“You told me to watch him from a distance. Now you expect me to attempt to do the opposite?”
“No Severus, I expect you to contact Alex and explain to her the situation Potter is in. Let her guide him, and when she needs your assistance you may help her, but otherwise keep a distance.”
“What are you hiding Albus?”
“Narcissa Malfoy was a veela.”
“Then the one that Narcissa loved must kill Lucius” he said, before it clicked, “Alex must kill him?”
“Yes, she must” Dumbledore leaned forward, grabbed a candy out of the bowl, and popped it into his mouth before continuing, “Alex thought that her and Narcissa originally were mates, but because of the arranged marriage between Lucius and Narcissa, Alex was unable to be with her. Her vampire took over, accepted that she wasn't, and shifted to Khira Sommers. Narcissa never stopped loving Alex though, which means Alex must kill Lucius.”
“Where does the four of them learning about the amulets come in?”
“A few years ago Alex was summoned to the ministry for a court hearing. After the hearing I questioned her about her family being in possession of the amulets. Upon speaking to her more on the subject we realized that it wasn’t just that she was in charge of watching over them, but she also was taught about them more than others because she was destined to find the next group of owners for them. It was in fact her ancestor who was the one who trained the original owners. It is in her blood to train the next generation of owners.”
“Why are you hiring her as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor?”
“A former Russian Ministry officer?” Snape nodded to him, “Who better to teach the students at Hogwarts in the subject than someone who has been in close proximity to the Dark Arts for years? She is only a halfblood vampire, but she still knows the darkness as much as any other vampire.”
“You could hire anyone again that you have so far. Why her?”
“Because Alexandria Kruss is the one person who does not choose sides in the war.”
“By helping Potter she is choosing a side though,” Snape countered.
“Yes, I have discussed this with her and she has told me that she knows that Voldemort must not win, and if she was to fight it would not be for the light. She will only fight to protect her family which she told me includes young Mr. Malfoy.”
“She always was too close to the boy.”
“You are too protective of him Severus. Also you must be nicer to Khira” Albus stated plainly.
“She is a potion mistress. We are bound to disagree.”
“You make it difficult by fighting her theories and research at every turn Severus” he said, before sighing.
The silence of the second floor of the estate was interrupted as a scream came from inside Hermione's room. Draco having heard her scream, ran to her room, and immediately ran over and held her in his arms while she cried. He rubbed gentle circles on her back while whispering soothing words in her ears but then noticed there was blood stained on the bed where her back had been then looked and noticed it smeared on his hands as well.
“Hermione what happened?!” he said and she turned to see the blood and gasped.
“Draco look at my back and see if there are scratches all over it” she said and he looked to see about one hundred scratches across her back and nodded at her.
“Draco, go get Alex please! I need her opinion on this!” she said and he ran out the door.
He rushed down the hall to the east wing where he knew their rooms were. Once he reached them he opened the door and stepped inside quickly. Upon turning around he looked up and immediately covered his eyes to not see more of Alex and Khira.
“I know you two were having fun but Hermione had a nightmare and I need you to come to her room. Something odd happened to her during it” he said and heard rustling of covers.
“You can uncover your eyes Draco. Now what happened to her?” Alex said and he did as she said.
“She had a nightmare and somehow she has scratches all over her back and there’s blood all over her back and the covers” he said and the two women looked at each other.
“We’ll get dressed and be right up there Draco. Oh and please next time knock instead of barging in. We don’t want you seeing any more of us than possible” Khira said and he nodded going back.
“Hermione they’ll be here soon. What happened that could have caused this?” he asked walking back to her room.
“I don’t know for sure Draco. I have a hunch of what it is but I’m not for sure” she replied.
“Okay what is going on here that you had to interrupt us for?” Alex said walking into the room in her pajamas and robe with Khira right behind her.
“I don’t know what happened but Hermione’s back is covered in scratches and blood” Draco said.
“Hermione did you have a nightmare?” she asked and received a nod, “Hermione I need to know what your nightmare was. I know it may be personal but I have to find out what it was so I know how you got these scratches. I think you were dream walking. I would rather you tell me what happened than me have to use my abilities to find out.”
“I’ll tell you but I would like to have some privacy about it. Could Draco and Khira leave the room?” she asked and they nodded.
“I’ll talk to you when you are done alright?” Draco said and kissed her lightly on the forehead before him and Khira walked out the door.
“Alright what happened?” Alex said moving closer and sitting next to her.
“I had a nightmare that Draco came up behind me pushing my back against the wall and was dressed up in the death eater mask and a black cloak. He pulled the mask off and was sneering at me before he cast a spell and then raped me yelling at me to scream,” she said holding back tears.
“It’s alright Hermione. You don’t need to worry about it. It was all a nightmare and nothing more” the older woman said soothingly.
“Do you think there is a reason for why these nightmares might be happening?” she asked.
“I think it has to do with the bond. Most veela and succubus bonds consist of two different parts. Mating and bonding is the most common but because you both have never slept together, you're not fulfilling the bond the way it wants you to. Succubi, being the sex addicts that they are, complete their bonds when they have actually had sexual activities with their mate. The bonding part means that until you two actually complete the ritual that you will rely on Draco’s presence when you both are sleeping. Otherwise your nightmares will continue to happen” she said and Hermione nodded.
“So you’re saying I’ll have to sleep with him from here on out otherwise I’ll have another nightmare?” she asked.
“Exactly, and it would also be best that you both not have sex either until after the ritual as well. I learned the consequences the hard way. The more you sleep with your bonded the harder it is to stop from doing it” she said and Hermione nodded, “Let me get a towel so we can clean up your back and then I’ll heal the scratches and then you can get dressed in some new clothes and go to Draco’s room.”
Alex went and got a towel and a bowl of warm water from the bathroom and then came back to Hermione’s room. She dabbed the blood from the wounds and noticed some of them were deeper then others. Once she was finished she cast a healing spell across Hermione’s back and told her to change her clothes and meet her in Draco’s room before she walked there.
“How is she doing?” Draco asked as she walked in.
“She’s fine now but we’ll have to let her sleep in your room until you both complete the bond. It seems that the bond is causing her to dream walk” she said.
“Dream walk? What’s that?” he asked.
“It’s just like sleep walking but instead you’re feeling your dreams and you don’t know about it until you wake up. It’s a natural occurrence during Succubi and Veela bonds so she will be sleeping with you from now on” she explained sitting next to Khira and the blond leaned over to rest her head on her shoulder.
“Are you sure you want to leave the two of them in the same room or even more in the same bed?” Khira asked and heard Draco and her both chuckle at the thought.
“They’ll be fine. I already told Hermione the consequences so there is no need to worry. Besides, Draco knows what’ll happen if I find out he is sleeping with her” she said with a smirk and he glared at her just as someone cleared their throat and they turned to see it was Hermione.
Draco stood up and walked over to her wrapping his arms around her and led her back to the bed before sitting down. Khira and Alex stood up and walked to the door to leave but Alex turned and looked at Draco strangely before leaving.
“That was odd” he said when the door closed.
“What?” Hermione asked.
“She just stared at me. She didn’t say anything to me mentally or verbally” he said.
“The funeral for your mum is in two days. I'm guessing she's getting nervous about it. She saw your mum die and now she has to watch as she's laid to rest. I can only imagine what is going through her head” Hermione stated, sitting next to him.
“Yeah, I guess” he replied, laying down and pulling her with him, “You excited about tonight?”
“I completely forgot about us going to the club later” she said, then turned to him and seeing his downcast look, “What's wrong?”
“I guess it's just finally hitting me that she's gone” he said quietly.
“You'll get through this Draco. If you want I'll go with you to the funeral.”
“I'd like that” he said, pulling her to lay against his chest, “Let's get some sleep.”
The following morning both of them were awoken by a loud crash outside Draco's room. They both groaned, sitting up just as someone knocked on the door. Draco told them to come in and he looked up noticing Harry entering the room. They pulled the covers close to cover themselves up as he stepped in. Once he stepped in he shut the door, before leaning against it and crossing his arms over his chest.
“Ron has found out about the two of you sleeping in Draco's room” he said and the two on the bed looked at each other before turning back to him, “He's not happy, but Alex has told him to get over it. That crash was because Crookshanks sneaked into his room again.”
“Tempus” Draco said, waving his wand above them and growled when the time showed it was ten in the morning.
“Thanks for letting us know Harry. We'll be downstairs once we get dressed” Hermione said and he nodded, turning and leaving the room, before she turned to the blond, “I'll go to my room and get dressed.”
“You know the bathroom's are actually connected right?” he said, his lips slightly curved into a smile.
“I didn't, but now I do” she said, climbing off the bed and heading to the bathroom, “I'll see you downstairs.”
Sunday morning Draco slowly opened his eyes, and looked down at the witch in his arms. Hermione was curled up against his side, with her head resting on his shoulder, and her arm wrapped around his waist. He smiled and pulled her closer, just as she stirred in his arms. She moaned in her sleep lightly, slowly opening her eyes.
“Morning” he said quietly.
“Morning” she replied, looking up at him, “What time is it?”
“Around nine” he stated, casting the Tempus spell, “We need to get up and get ready to leave for the funeral. Alex said we're leaving at around noon.”
“I'll go get dressed and meet you downstairs for breakfast” she said, moving to get up, but he pulled her back.
“Thank you for doing this Mia” he kissed her lightly, letting her go, and she nodded before heading into her room.
The two of them arrived downstairs about thirty minutes later to find the others were just starting breakfast. Alex didn't look up at them and Draco could tell she was not in a talking mood. As they sat down Khira and the others greeted them, but Alex remained silent. Khira and Draco shared a look and he nodded, getting the point.
“Mione, a letter came for you earlier” Harry stated, handing her the letter.
“It's from my gran” she said, opening the seal and reading the letter.
Hermione,
I have been lax on your training and really must get you ready before you return to Hogwarts. Alex has agreed to letting me come and stay until you return to school so that you may learn. I will be coming back with you after the funeral and we will go over the basics then. I will see you at the funeral.
Love you,
Gran
“She's going to come back here with us after the funeral to start my training” Hermione said and Khira nodded, before Alex stood up suddenly and walked outside.
“Alex!” Khira called to her, before standing up as well.
“Khira what's wrong?” Draco asked, but she shook her head.
“I'm going to go talk to her. You guys all go and get ready. We'll meet down here at a quarter till noon to leave by portkey” she said and they nodded, turning back to their meals.
“What's with her today?” Ron asked, and the other three teens rolled their eyes.
“Ron, she's grieving...” Harry said, shaking his head.
“Still Harry...doesn't mean she needs to snap at us-”
“Weasley, imagine for once if you loved someone and had to endure seeing them die in front of you” Draco stated, his temper on edge, “Now imagine how she feels knowing she has to bear seeing the same person being buried.”
“I'd feel like shite I guess” he said, looking down.
At eleven forty the four of them were waiting downstairs. Draco was seated on the couch, with Hermione next to him while Harry and Ron sat at the table in the corner, playing chess. Alex came down the stairs, with Khira arriving a minute later. The blond held out an old doll as they walked over and each of them grabbed onto it, instantly feeling the pull behind their navels. Upon landing Hermione stumbled but was quickly caught by Draco. They all turned and looked up at the house and chills ran through their bodies at the rundown manor. The windows were all covered in dust, and there were vines growing on the side of the house, turning what was one a vibrant gray stone into a dull moldy green color. Alex cleared her throat and they all turned away to see her looking up at the side of the house, where three men in dark cloaks stood. They all walked up to the men, and Alex said something to them in Russian before another man stepped forward, and they noticed he was wearing the imperial eagle badge. Alex walked up to the man and shook his hand, speaking to him in Russian, before turning back to the teens.
“This is one of my fellow officers at the Soviet Ministry. I asked them to send him so we had someone to watch the apparation point in case we had any unwanted visitors.”
“Mr. Malfoy if you would please follow me we would like to go over a few things with you before we begin with the funeral” one of the aurors stated and he nodded, following him.
Hermione watched him leave and turned to talk to Harry and Ron. Her grandmother arrived five minutes later with Professor Dumbledore, and they both smiled somberly and greeted the teens. It took another twenty minutes before the auror and Draco returned, but they were soon led around the back of the house, to the mausoleum. Draco pulled Hermione close as they entered the tomb, and she felt him stiffen as they stepped closer to the marble sepulcher. She looked up and noticed the mask of indifference on his face, but she knew inside he was hurting.
“Thank you all for coming” a white haired wizard in formal robes stated, walking past Alex and lighting the candles inside the tomb as he went, “I am sorry that we all must be here today for the reason we are. My name is Albert Windrow and I am the Ministry of Magic's appointed mortician, and was asked by Narcissa prior to her death to be the one to oversee her funeral today. Are we ready to begin?”
“We need to wait for one more person” Alex said, turning to the door.
“Who?” the older wizard asked.
“Professor Severus Snape, the Potions Master at Hogwarts wishes to be here as well. He asked me to not allow us to start until he was here” she said and the man nodded.
“Very well, but if he is not here by two then I am sorry but we must continue then” he replied and they nodded.
They all waited in the tomb, Harry and Ron reading off the names of the other graves as they went around the room. Hermione placed a hand on Draco's shoulder and he looked down at her, and nodded, signaling to her that he was alright. After another twenty minutes, someone cleared their throat, and they all turned to see Snape enter the mausoleum. He nodded to Draco and moved over towards the older wizard who nodded and shook his hand, introducing himself.
“Since everyone is here now, let us begin” he said, as Harry and Ron turned and walked over to Hermione and Draco.
The old wizard held his wand out from in front of himself and waved it, as the lid of the tomb turned transparent. They all looked inside to see Narcissa's body laying there, in a silver dress, with white lilies and lilac bouquets on her sides. Her wand was resting in her hands with a purple ribbon surrounding them. An intake of breath from all of the women was heard in the room.
“We are gathered here today to mourn a great loss in this world. Narcissa Athena Malfoy nee Black was a wonderful witch, mother, sister, and she will be greatly missed. Though tragic her sudden death was, she will always live on in our hearts. I remember having met Narcissa back when she had just graduated from Hogwarts. She was a very intelligent witch, and I instantly grew to like her. As the years passed we occasionally met, and upon her saying she was pregnant with young Draco, I wished her the very best. I never got to see her after he was born, and we only talked through letters, but from the man that I see standing here before me, I can tell she did well in raising him. I only wish there had been more in the world like Narcissa. I was contacted prior to her death by Narcissa and asked that if something happened to her, that I recite a poem for her, but also that I read a letter she left for those she loved. I wish to do that now” the older man paused, unrolling a parchment before reading it, “The poem she asked me to say was When I'm Gone by Lyman Hancock.
When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile
Forget unkind words I have spoken
Remember some good I have done
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun
Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, 'ere the close of the day
Then forget to grieve for my going
I would not have you sad for a day
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay
And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best
The letter she wrote to me, it included a side note, stating that it was for her son Draco, and best friend Alex. I wish to read that now.
Dear Alexandria and Draconus,
I know now that I am gone, and you may question if it was worth what happened for me to be where I am now. My answer to you both is yes, it was worth it. I am not truly gone from either of you, and I shall never be. My dear Alex, I look back at the times we had together, and I would not trade any of them for another day different. Know this Alex; I do not regret the time we had. I always loved you, and always will. Do you remember when we went to the lake the summer before you graduated? You said to me 'There is always a spot in a person's heart for their first true love. No matter what happens you will always be there.' You were right, and I am there even now. I am not gone. When you find yourself remembering me and wish I were still here, search in that spot and you shall find me.
My dear Dragon, I know you miss me, as I shall miss you. Do not cry for me Draco, for I know it is because of me being gone, that has set you on the right path. In my life the only thing I regret was letting your father control you the way he has done. You are not the way that man was, and I hope that you will be on the right path by the time you hear of this letter. Remember Dragon that I am not truly gone, but only closer. I have seen the one you are intended for, and I give you my blessing. She is perfect for you, and I could not have hoped for anyone else to be yours. Treasure the times you have with her, and always remember that I love you my dear Dragon.”
The older wizard paused and let the words of the letter sink in. Halfway through the letter Alex had collapsed, leaning her head against the marble of the tomb. She was whispering in Russian, but Draco caught words of it and wiped his eyes. Alex was renewing her promise to his mother, the one to protect him. After a few minutes she wiped her eyes, and stood up, nodding to the older wizard.
“I ask at this time that you all hold out your wands, and join me now as we say our final farewell to Narcissa” he raised his wand and waited for the others to do so, before a white light glowed from his.
“Time has passed, the wheel has turned.
It is time for you Narcissa to move on.
You will walk hand in hand with the Lord and Lady
and with your ancestors who came before you.
Great Mother, welcome Narcissa back into your womb.
And Great Father welcome her back into your divine instruction.
Let her come to you and know that she has been blessed
by your gracious gift of Life. Let her come into your Divine Love,
and let her know that she has left behind a life of legacy,
that she shall be remembered and loved.
As she enters your world, wrap her in your loving arms,
and welcome her back home. Let her speak to the Ancient Ones
to learn the greater mysteries that lie beyond the veil.
Give her the strength to take these final steps,
and allow her to do so with peace and dignity.
Those of us left behind shall indeed mourn her death,
but we shall also know that her Soul and Spirit is coming back
to Holy Mother and Holy Father, and that she shall be made whole again.
We shall cry, but we shall also laugh for we shall celebrate the Life that had been given to Narcissa
And let her also know that as we now part, that we shall also meet again.
He paused and lit three white candles in front of himself before continuing.
And we now, with these candles respect the flame of Narcissa's life,
and though these candle flames shall die out, we know that Narcissa shall live on,
and her flame shall never cease to burn, and we also know that she shall be reborn anew.
Take her by the hand and guide her back into your heart,
for this is what is right and just.
Let her walk unerringly down the path that leads to your Love.
This is our will and so mote it be.
“So mote it be” everyone chanted as a white light sprung from each of their wands, dying out after a minute.
“Draco, at this time would you be willing to give a drop of your blood to seal the tomb?” the wizard asked and he nodded.
Albert walked over to Draco and handed him a silver dagger, which he pricked his finger with. The older wizard nodded and had him repeat the spell after him, while letting his blood drip onto the flower on the marble. The flower turned a bright red color, before turning back to white, and Albert smiled.
“I will leave each of you to say any final words you wish to say” he said, with a nod, before walking out of the mausoleum.
“I'm sorry to interrupt, but Mr. Malfoy, when you are finished, there is a goblin from Gringotts bank that is here and wishes to see you and Lady Kruss. He said there is something about the will that he needs to speak to you both about” an auror said from the door and Draco nodded, before the man left.
“Mr. Malfoy” Draco turned to look at Dumbledore, and shook the older wizard's extended hand, “I am truly sorry for your loss. Your mother was a fine witch. No one deserves this kind of thing happening.”
“Thank you sir.”
“I will see all of you at the feast in September. Do be careful” he said and the teens all nodded, watching the old man walk out of the Mausoleum, Snape following behind him after nodding to Draco.
“Well that wasn't weird or anything...” Alex's sarcastic tone caught their attention and they all turned to look at her, “What?”
“Nothing” they all said, turning back to look at the door.
“Right” she said, walking over, “I think it's best we leave and let Draco seal the mausoleum, and then find the goblin that is here to speak to me and Draco.”
The four teens nodded and followed the woman out, Draco taking a moment to fix the blood wards again on the mausoleum, before they walked over to the aurors, to speak to the goblin. Draco sighed as they got closer and knew this was going to be an even longer day.
