Chapter 11
Nicole stirred as he got up and dressed to go downstairs to face her brother. He left her sleeping, knowing that she needed the rest. Arriving in the sitting room, he found Harry and all the Weasleys crammed in there with Severus. For all the people in the room, it was eerily quiet when Draco walked into the room. All eyes turned to him as he entered, making him stop in his tracks, thinking that he had walked in on a conversation that he wasn’t supposed to hear. He surveyed the mix of people in the room, all battle worn and weary looking, much like himself. They all looked at each other, none knowing who should speak first.
Harry broke the silence, “Where’s Nicole? What have you done with her, Malfoy?” he spat out.
Severus stood, “Harry, Nicole is upstairs resting. She was weakened by the curse leaving her and needs to rest to regain her strength,” he said softly. Draco leaned against the fireplace with an elbow upon the mantle and his face resting on his hand.
Harry stopped his advance on Draco abruptly, “Wait, what curse?” he asked midstride.
Severus side, “Sit down, Harry, this is a very long story.” He motioned for Harry to sit back in the seat he had vacated when Draco came in. “First off, Draco, did it work?”
“Yes, sir, I believe it did,” Draco answered him, not moving from his spot by the fireplace.
Severus nodded. Sighing, he began to speak, “Where to begin? I suppose the beginning would be the best.” He paced the room, not really directing his speech towards anyone in particular, just speaking. “First, I suppose I should explain for those newcomers the relationship between myself and Nicole. She is daughter in every way but blood. I found her in the Potter household the night they were killed; before anyone came for Harry. Most of you don’t know my feelings for Lily, but I was devastated to learn that he had killed her. Everyone assumed that the baby she was carrying had died with her, but that’s not true. While I was there, Lily’s belly began glowing. It was Nicole, letting her presence be known. I sliced Lily open, got her out and brought her here. She was the last piece of Lily I would ever hold on to. I raised her, away from everything, away from Harry. I wanted to protect her from the world. She began showing special gifts, beyond being a normal witch. She was powerful, I knew that, after all, look who her brother is. She began having visions, sometimes helping me find something that I had misplaced. She gained control of that power quickly, now able to call it at will. Her empathy powers, well, those were much harder to get control of. When her name showed up on the roll at Hogwarts when she turned 11, Dumbledore had a huge fit about me keeping her hidden from the world. He was the only one who knew exactly who she was.” He stopped to take a few deep breaths, looking around at the others. All eyes were on him, enraptured by his story. “I didn’t want her to know about Harry, but I knew that it was inevitable for them meet. The night before we were to go for the start of term, she had a vision of the past. Of me pulling her out of her mother and bringing her here. I had to tell her the truth then. She agreed with me that her true identity be kept a secret.”
“Every time I saw her, I felt that I knew her from somewhere. She looks exactly like our mother, doesn’t she?” Harry spoke softly in the silence.
“Yes, she does, Harry. You have your mother’s eyes, but you look more like your father. Nicole looks very much like Lily,” Severus answered. “At school it became harder for her to control her empathy powers. All those raging hormones and painful magic mishaps were taking a toll on her. I devised some charms to keep emotions out of a particular area and placed them on my chambers in the castle. She would come there when it got too much to handle, just for some peace and quiet. Well, as you can guess, Harry found out about his sister and came to me asking about her. I told him everything, and he agreed to keep it from his thoughts whenever he was near danger. Then before her sixth year, as she was on the train to Hogwarts, she was taken. Luna was taken as well, but they were kept separate. When Voldemort let us know that he had someone, I knew it was Nicole. I was horrified. I hadn’t kept my promise to keep her safe. I hadn’t kept my promise that no one would ever hurt her. Draco found me that night as I was pacing my chambers, trying to figure out a way to get her back. He knew that she was gone; he knew that I had some sort of relationship with her. He came to me wanting answers. I told him everything, and he offered to help me search for her. We felt certain that she was being kept at Malfoy Manor and he would be the one who could wander the Manor and not look suspicious doing it, since it was his home. Months we searched for her with no luck. Draco tried to bribe the house elves to help us, but they wouldn’t budge.” Severus stopped, looking at Draco, wondering if he should let him continue the story.
Draco sighed heavily; this was where he needed to pick up the story. “I searched the manor over thousands of times for any sign of Nicole. I was getting discouraged. It had been six months and we still couldn’t find her. I knew she was at the Manor, but I just couldn’t find her. One day, in April, everyone left the Manor, leaving me alone in my searching. One of the house elves came up to me and told me that they would help me and take me to Nicole. She was being hidden by magic and that was why I was never able to find her. What I saw made me sad and very angry. He had her tied up in a cell, naked. Her hands were bound together attached to the ceiling, and her feet were bound together attached to the floor. She was nothing but skin and bones. I could count every rib; see every bone in her body. She wasn’t quite conscious. I got her down, took down the wards around the place and apparated her here. I called Severus and he came right away.” He looked at his godfather, waiting for him to take back over with the story.
“I ran a diagnostic while Draco called for a Healer. I found the curse that was on her and knew that there was nothing I could do. The Healer arrived and began working to heal broken bones and bruises and giving her fluid for the dehydration. I knew that he could do nothing about the curse, though, so it was pointless what he was doing. He asked me what the curse was and I explained, forgetting that Draco was in the room. Voldemort had placed a curse on Nicole that wizards use to get women into their bed.” Molly Weasley gasped at this, placing a hand over her mouth. “He had altered it a little, making it activate if she was taken from the Manor. He also made it where she had to have sex every day or it would kill her. Not just have sex, she and her partner had to orgasm during the same session. He also added in that contraception potions and spells would kill her. Sadistic bastard.” Severus spat, hating the man who had done this to his daughter. “The curse would stay in place until the curser died. That’s what the bright light was after he was killed. The curse left her body, but drained her magic dangerously. That’s why she’s here resting.” He finished telling his story and sat, awaiting the bombarding of questions.
Silence reigned for several moments before Nicole spoke from the stairs. “Talking about me behind my back?” she asked with a slight smile.
Everyone looked up at her. Draco was the first to move. He moved to her side to help her into the room to a seat. He knew that she was still a bit weak. He stood to the side of the stairs and offered his arm for her to take. “Feeling better, I see,” he said with a smile.
“Much, thank you, you didn’t have to,” she said softly, remembering how tender and loving he was a few hours before. She took his arm and allowed him to help her walk on shaky legs to the seat her father had vacated.
“Okay, wait. You said that this curse would kill her if she… if…” Hermione began, but couldn’t say the words.
“Had sex, Granger. It’s okay to say it, it’s not something dirty or wrong,” Draco said with a chuckle.
“Right, but she’s still alive, so who…? Oh, I see,” she said, realization dawning on her.
“That’s right, Granger. I volunteered to be the partner that she needed to keep her alive,” he answered.
Harry stood abruptly, “So that’s what you were doing at the school?”
Nicole nodded and sighed, “Yes, Harry, he was keeping me alive one more day, since the war was still raging and Voldemort wasn’t dead yet.”
Harry shook his head, “Why him? Why not someone else, anyone else?”
Severus spoke up, “Who, Harry? A stranger off the streets? Someone who wouldn’t be gentle with her, who would hurt her just because he could? Would that have been better for you?”
Harry started to speak but stopped, thinking about what was just said. He had to admit, that wasn’t a scenario that he would have liked. “No, I suppose not. But why Malfoy, he would hurt her?”
Nicole looked up at her brother, “No, Harry. Draco has never hurt me. Before you speak, Draco, that doesn’t count, it was necessary and barely hurt. Draco has always been gentle with me. He’s not who you think he is, Harry. You haven’t gotten to know him at all. He’s actually a very sweet, kind, loving person.”
Harry stared at her, “He’s a death eater,” he hissed.
“Not by choice, Harry. He did it to protect his family. You would do the same thing,” Severus said. “Draco volunteered to keep your sister alive until Voldemort was dead. What we didn’t realize was that he was strengthening her magic whenever they had sex.” He chuckled at Harry’s cringe at the word ‘sex’. “Honestly, Potter, it’s just a word. We believe that this strengthening of her magic is what caused her to develop a new power, projection.” Hermione gasped and her eyes widened. “Yes, Miss Granger, Nicole is the one you researched about for Lupin.”
Everyone was silent as they let this information sink in. The silence was broken by George, “Okay, so you said that contraception spells and potions would kill her. How did you keep her from getting pregnant if this has been going on for so long now?”
Nicole stared up at Draco, not really knowing how to answer that question. Severus cleared his throat, “Well, there was no way to keep it from happening. We just had to rely on fate, and as fate would have it, she is pregnant.”
Nicole snapped her head back to look at her father, not sure if she was hoping he was joking or serious. Draco stared at his godfather, gaping. ‘A baby? I’m going to be a father? Oh, wow,’ he thought to himself.
“Wait a minute. She’s pregnant with a Malfoy spawn?” Harry said, voice rising in anger.
Severus nodded, still keeping his eyes on Nicole. “I found out when I checked to see that the curse was gone,” he said softly.
Nicole slow raised her head to look at Draco. His head shook from side to side, “I’m so sorry, Nicole,” he said, kneeling beside her.
“Draco, there’s nothing to be sorry about. We knew that it was a possibility. We knew that there was a risk. It’s not going to change the way I feel about you,” she told him, reaching for his hand on the arm of the chair.
Draco looked at her, her words sinking in, “You hate me. I knew you would,” he said, hanging his head.
Nicole stared at him for a moment and then began laughing, “Silly boy. Of course I don’t hate you. How could I hate you? You’re the one who despises me. You hate me for having this curse and making you have sex with me.”
Draco looked up at her, “You are so wrong there, Nicole. I could never hate you.” Not realizing it, he had let down his guard and was allowing his emotions to soar around him. He stared into Nicole’s eyes, hoping that she wasn’t about to tell him to leave, forgetting that anyone else was in the room.
Nicole looked at him quizzically. She was feeling his emotions, something he had kept hidden from her for a while. She felt a warm and fuzzy feeling coming from him. She tilted her head to the side and narrowed her eyes, “Love?” she whispered.
Draco heard a sharp intake of breath and remembered that they were not alone, but he didn’t care. She had felt his love for her. Nodding, “I’ve been in love with you for years. I just didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to let you know,” he said softly, not wanting to scare her.
Nicole smiled at him, “Oh, Draco, why didn’t you tell me? I have loved you for a long while now, but I just didn’t realize it.” Reaching up to place a hand on his cheek, she forced him to look at her.
“So, you don’t want me to go away?” Draco asked, surprised at himself.
Shaking her head, “Never.” Nicole leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on his lips. “You are stuck with me now, forever.”
Harry made a choking noise, causing everyone to look at him. “If all the sappiness is finished, I have something to say.” When he had Nicole’s attention, he continued. “Nicole, you are my sister and I want you to be happy. Hearing all of the things that Voldemort did to you makes me want to resurrect him just to kill him again. I may not like your choice in partners, but I will respect it, since you are my sister. Draco, if you ever, ever hurt her, you won’t have to worry about that mark on your arm anymore. I will be your worst nightmare,” he warned. “So, what’s going to happen now?” he turned to Severus to ask.
“Well, things will go back to normal at school. We will repair it. McGonagall will take over as Headmistress, and I will go back to teaching Potions, I suppose.” Severus said with a sad smile.
“That’s good, but that’s not what I was referring to. I meant, what happens with Nicole?” Harry said.
“Harry, I’m of legal age, I do not need anyone’s consent for anything I do. I’m not sure what’s going to happen. I’ve never been able to see my own future. Right now, I think the best idea would be to see a Healer and for Draco and I to have a long discussion in private.” Nicole said to her brother.
“Well, this has been very informative. I never knew there was this side to you, Severus. Who knew that you could take in an orphaned child and raise her? I do have one question, though. Why didn’t you take Harry? Or at the very least, take him in after he was taken to his relatives?” Arthur spoke up.
Severus sighed again, “Well, I knew that Dumbledore had sent someone to get Harry, and if I had taken him then, Dumbledore would have moved Heaven and Earth to find him and there would be hell to pay for whoever took him. As for not retrieving him from his aunt and uncle’s home, that has to do with a protection spell that happened when Lily and James gave their lives for their children. Whoever took the child in at the beginning was who the spell attached itself to. So, Harry was better protected at his aunt and uncle’s house than he would have been here. Nicole was better protected here than she would have been anywhere else.”
Everyone nodded their heads, knowing that what he said was true. “Well, if that’s everything, I think we will be heading back to the Burrow. Harry, will you be joining us?” Molly said and stood to gather her children and leave.
