Chapter 11 - Ghosts of the Past
Warnings – H/C, Angst, M/M
After his nap, Harry woke and went to rap on the door to the guestroom. He did not want to embarrass them by barging in or himself for witnessing what would most assuredly be an intimate moment.
George opened the door and beckoned Harry further in. "We are ready whenever you are." He stated.
"I had thought it might be best to have lunch before we set out." Harry offered. Draco nodded and followed George out of the room. The table in the kitchen had been expanded to fit them comfortably. Lunch was already prepared for them, and so they ate in silence. Each afraid of breaking the silence. Harry was the first to broach the uncomfortable silence.
"You two obviously do not need any tips on getting along." Harry offered with a smile. George grinned, Draco weakly smiled.
"I'm happy for you two. Evidently the protection charms within Hogwarts were activated by you two, though she won't say how or why. But, she did say that the protection charms were used to bond you as you both have something the other needs. Oh, and it is a lifetime bond. But I am sure you two will work out any differences in the future." Harry stated, trying to keep a nonchalant tone.
George looked over at Draco, "You alright?"
Draco smiled, "We will be fine, and I have no doubts."
George seemed to relax visibly.
When they finished eating, Harry took the small bag on the counter and shrunk it to fit in his pocket. "Come on guys, let’s go." And they walked out of the cottage towards the edge of Hogwarts near the path to Hogsmeade.
Once outside of Hogwarts grounds, Harry offered both his arms to his companions, each taking one. Harry clearly envisioned his parents old home and apparated them to Godric's hollow.
Harry always hated the disorienting feeling of apparition. They landed smoothly next to the gate.
Harry looked over the battered ruin, more rubble added after his last encounter there. He opened the gate and walked through as it creaked open. He made his way through the overgrown brush and pushed the old door open. The debris from the previous visit was strewn all over. Parts of the ceiling were missing and in one place he could see out to the sky overhead. He moved from one room to another, looking for the obvious room that had been his parents. Once up the stairs and through the first door on his left, George and Draco fanned out to start sifting through items and rubble. Harry moved towards the closet and started moving clothing and shoes. He found a couple of boxes, but nothing of value or the snitch for which he was looking for.
"I got nothing" George called out.
"Me neither" Draco added.
They split up to search other rooms. Harry found what was left of his room, the crib still in place. Scenes from his memories started playing before his eyes. His gaze kept falling to the spot he knew Snape had once held his mother in death. Grief threatened to consume him, as he moved over to a dresser in the corner. He opened several drawers and found them completely empty. It looked from how the dust was missing in places that the items had been moved recently. He moved over to the closet and found a pile of baby items, clothing, cloths and such on the floor. Nothing was hanging in the closet.
Harry was a bit puzzled, but walked out of the room and down the stairs, there was a mantle above a fireplace he remembered from the last time he was there. So he went over to it, and sure enough there was a plaque and a golden snitch attached to it. The inscription was for his Father.
"Presented to James Potter in memory of his win against the house of Slytherin 400 to 0. 1978"
Harry shouted to the others, "Found it!" as he grabbed it and shrunk it and added it to his pockets. Draco and George joined him and nodded. Harry led them out of the house back towards the gate where they apprated in.
"Mind if I go by the graves?" Harry asked. He wanted to at least lay a flower down in their memory.
"Not at all, we can wait for you here." George said, as he reached around and put his arm around Draco's shoulders, drawing him close.
Harry nodded and moved towards the church that held the graveyard.
The day was bright, the sun was high and he was in good spirits. Harry passed a small garden in front of the Church and found a few flowers he liked and picked them. He arranged them as he walked around the back towards his parent's graves. He froze. Sitting next to the grave of his mother was a man he never thought to see again.
The man was dark; the robes were dirty and torn. He was hunched and rocking back and forth. There was a low mumbling that Harry could not make out until he got closer.
"He's dead Lilly, I was too late. He's dead. I was too late. Too late, Lilly. He's dead."
Harry rushed quickly to the man and knelt down trying to get the man to look at him.
"Professor Snape, Look at me... I am here" Harry all but shouted.
Professor Snape was very pale, as if he hadn't eaten in weeks, and his eyes were open, but almost soulless. He kept rocking back and forth, holding onto his legs, and continued to mutter about Harry being dead and He was too late. Harry looked up and noticed the bite marks were small, as if Nagini was a small snake not the monster she was. He shook his head. "Professor!" His voice grew louder and louder. "Professor!" Harry was shaking the man now, but still nothing. The man was catatonic. George and Draco came running in looking around for danger and stopping as their eyes fell on the scene before them.
"How?" Draco started. "We got to get him some help. He is not responding. He is sick. We have to help him." Harry cried, desperation filtering into his voice.
George bent down and Harry placed an arm under Snapes and they lifted the man up. Snapes body was rigid, stuck in the sitting position. Draco cast a lightening charm on the man, making it easier for the other two men to lift him. Harry felt helpless, nervous, afraid and elated all at once. His mission was perfectly clear; he had to get Severus Snape help.
Harry apprated all them back to the cottage. Harry did not even realize that he had done so inside the grounds of Hogwarts, but Draco and George exchanged an awed look. Harry moved the professor over towards the parlor in front of the fire and tried to get the man's limbs to move. Snape seemed to be stuck in the same position, rocking. Harry had to find out what happened.
"Stand back," he shouted to the other two and raised his wand, "Legillemens!"
Memory
He felt himself thrown forwards and land hard onto cold stone. He was not viewing the memory, he was experiencing the memory. he was staring up into his own green eyes, full of emotion staring back at him. Something strange and familiar tugged at his conscious, a feeling of emotions he did not understand. It was like gravity falling forward. Then darkness took him, and he saw nothing. A brilliant white light was shining in front of him. The light formed into a shimmering figure of his mother Lilly. She was beautiful, just as she looked when he went to see Voldemort.
"Severus, my friend. You shouldn't be here." She spoke softly.
"I have done all I could, I gave him everything Albus told me to...and I failed you. He will die." He said, only it was Snape's voice, not his own.
"You have not failed, Severus. You just didn't know. Your loyalty in me was misplaced. Your heart belongs elsewhere, not with me. He needs you Severus. You need him too. Go, it is not your time. His heart is your heart." Lilly spoke softly.
"I don't understand. And I can't go, I am dying." Severus replied.
Lilly smiled, “You are my friend Severus, but the connection you felt, was not to me. It was to my baby. Did you not see? You may be dying, but you will not die this day. I will give you what little strength I can to get you back. Then I must go. Harry needs me. He will need you when all this is done. Go Severus... Find peace and happiness." her hand reached out towards Severus/Harry and touched his throat gently. The white light grew and heated up, almost burning.
His eyes opened, and he was back in the boat house again. He felt his throat only to find small scars instead of gaping wounds. He pushed himself up and started to go in search of Harry. He had to find out the truth.
The memory blurred fast, He was staring at the gathering in the courtyard of Hogwarts. From behind a broken wall he could see the approach of Voldemort and his followers. His gaze narrowed on the body dangling from the arms of the half-giant. Everything inside of him seemed to fracture. Harry was dead. And now he knew. Severus Snape's heart broke again in agony as he ran as fast as he could until everything was a blur and he found himself in the Forbidden forest. The memory blurred as if the days mixed, bits of memory were choppy. The forest, towns, houses, and finally the grave yard.
Present
Harry found himself panting and being held by four strong arms.
He was crying, sweating blood, and exhausted. Nobody said a word.
George motioned for Draco to move Snape upstairs to the bedroom and He caught Harry up and cradled him. The two of them took their burdens up the narrow stairs towards Harry's room. Once inside they found two beds instead of one. George placed Harry in his own, and Draco sat Severus on to the other. Both boys tried various charms to get his arms and legs to straighten out. Finally Draco was able to cast an immobilus charm followed by an envenerate that loosened the professor up to allow them to get him into the bed.
Harry mumbled that he had a dreamless vial, so they grabbed that and poured some into the professor’s mouth. Draco massaged Snape's throat to ensure it was swallowed. Within minutes the professor was sleeping deeply, his body pliant again.
Harry was another story. He was sobbing; his brow was full of blood from his extreme sweating. Draco left to get a cool cloth and George tucked Harry in while trying to help the man calm down. With Draco's help, they had Harry cleaned up, and the other sleep inducing potion down his throat till both men were sleeping peacefully.
George and Draco stood and left the room and silently went downstairs.
"I think we need to tell McGonagall that we found Professor Snape, and my parents will want to know as well." Draco said, moving closer to George almost unconsciously. George opened his arms to hold Draco, trying to infuse a bit of calm into the younger man.
"We will go in just a minute. The world can wait." George said as he drew Draco towards the couch in the parlor, setting them down.
Draco looked up at George, waiting. George smiled. Draco felt his breath hitch at that smile. George looked breathtaking when his smile reached his dark brown eyes. The smile faded and a more serious look crossed his face. "Can you really be ok with a life with me? I have nothing really to offer you; My heart will need time to heal. Fred and I were..." George choked and tried to continue but Draco stopped him with a raise of his hand.
"I admit that this was not something I had planned, nor really thought of. But you offer me the possibility of a life with love that I would not find within my own circle. You captivate me; the bond has enhanced that somehow. We can grow, and learn and fail gloriously. I will do everything I can to bring back the funny George we all knew, and I admired. I cannot replace Fred, and do not expect to. But I want you to try to see me. Not the boy from school, not a second choice either, but me. I knew you two were more than just brothers, anyone could see that. It matters only in so much as I know your heart, but I offer mine for the wooing as I will try to win yours." Draco spoke so softly that George could barely hear it. The words were sincere, perfect and so what he needed. There was a need for acceptance in those grey eyes, and George would try. Looking down at the blonde he was swept away by the stark beauty he held. Where Fred was everything George was hard lines, handsome features, and rough around the edges; Draco was pale, soft and willowy, beauty personified, and graceful to a fault. They were as different as Mars and Mercury.
George held Draco to him, the blonde head nudging the crook of his arm and breathing in his scent. That action was intoxicating to George, knowing that Draco was breathing him in made him feel dizzy and aroused. He tipped Draco's chin up, chocolate meeting mercury, and dove in to capture those trembling lips. The taste was sweet, addictive and George lost himself in the kiss. His tongue mapped out every grove in Draco's heated cavern, flicking behind the teeth eliciting a moan.
Draco felt devoured and treasured; all he could do was follow where George was leading. His head was spinning and his whole body thrummed with arousal and excitement. His heart raced, his mind had golden fireworks going off and he felt like an explosion of something was going to overwhelm him.
George had to touch skin; everything was so binding and itchy. He reached around and pushed one button off and slipped his hand inside Draco's shirt and felt the silk and heat of skin, just one touch and George broke the kiss grunting his release, only to be overtaken by Draco's own shout.
Neither man had ever experienced anything so intense. A kiss and a touch so potent they both lost complete control. They sat, breathing hard, foreheads touching eyes closed, taking in the comfort of one another.
Upstairs
Harry's rest was fitful, but not without dreams. He was searching for the unknown man, but could not find him. The loss was unbearable and the darkness felt all consuming. His eyes still would not open, but he could move and feel nothing, suspended in nothingness. No comforting hands, no tears of grief, no warmth of body. Nothing. Empty. Lost.
Harry awoke, panting, and heart racing. He stared around his room, eyes falling to the man on the other bed.
Harry moved out of the bed over to the man, and just stared. The black hair was greased together, his face pale and almost hollow, but his face looked peaceful. Earlier it was contorted with grief and guilt. That peaceful expression pulled at Harry, but it was easy to ignore as other thoughts were racing inside his head. Snape was alive. After all the man had done for his mother protecting him, and the man had sacrificed his own life, harry was elated with the prospect of honoring the man.
Some things in Snapes memory did not make much sense to Harry, but at least he knew that his mother had saved an honorable man. That is what mattered. Harry had an almost uncontrollable urge to touch the sleeping man and sweep away a lock of hair, but he refrained. Instead he turned back towards his nightstand and grabbed his wand. He cast a cleansing charm on the sleeping Professor, hoping that at least he could give him that. He had to prove that he was alive to this man. Evidently guilt over Harry's demise was eating him alive. Harry could not stand for Severus to feel guilty.
Harry chided himself for using Professor Snapes given name, even if it was inside his head. The man deserved respect. Harry walked back over to his bed. It was empty and foreboding in a way. So he decided to go back down to the kitchen and fetch some food.
There was a note on the kitchen table when Harry arrived; it was addressed to him in Draco's nice script.
Harry,
Went to inform McGonagall, Pomfrey and folks of our finds. George and I will see you for dinner later.
D & G
Harry sighed. It would be quiet for a while. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the snitch he had found at his parent's house and put it on a shelf. He made a sandwich and proceeded to the parlor to read his mother's parchments and see what else she had to say.
The page about the snitch had filled in as he had suspected... so he read on.
Albus knew our fate and warned us, but we had chosen to stay even though our protection was slim. We knew we had put our trust in the wrong friend after it was too late, but we wanted to die together protecting you. You could get a chance and live and we did not want to alter your destiny. So to protect your destiny we dared not try to run. We loved you.
That was more than a bit surprising. Harry did not want to think about Albus imparting Harry's destiny and his parent's choosing death because of some prediction. Harry felt sick. The man was like a grandfather to him, yet in all the years the manipulation still irked him. Harry saw another line of script appear on the next page:
Your soul mate lives - To reveal the rest, brew the epiphany potion.
A scream of agony and pain pierced the house. Harry dropped the parchments on the table and ran upstairs towards the sound throwing open the door to his room. Black eyes struck emerald and Harry was blinded by the sheer intensity held there. Darkness took them both.
