Chapter 11
Leading Arthur to the kitchen, Remus stopped and smiled as Padfoot sauntered by with a toy in his mouth. Holding the massive dog's tail in his mouth, growling, Little Paws was being dragged right along behind him. Smiling bigger and giving a soft chuckle, Remus said, “Little Paws? I doubt Padfoot even knows you're back there.” After being on the receiving end of what could only be termed a disgruntled look from the dog, though Padfoot's tail was still in his mouth, Remus shook his head, still smiling, and led Arthur into the kitchen.
Chuckling softly at the two dogs, though vaguely wondering when they had gotten the puppy and where Harry was, Arthur stepped into the kitchen that had been used for meetings for so long. Like with what he had seen of the rest of the house, this, too, had been cleaned and redecorated. Though no natural light filtered in, it seemed far brighter and cheery as someone, probably Remus, had installed a couple of windows that were similar to what was used at the Ministry; ones that showed a scene of outside with a natural weather pattern. This was nice!
Taking a seat at the same old scarred table, though it that had been refurbished so that it looked far better, Arthur took a cup of tea from one of the elves and got comfortable. After a sip, he asked, “Will Harry and Sirius be joining us?” With that, he noticed several things. First and foremost was that Remus didn't look nearly as tired as he usually did after the full moon. It was a couple of days after, but normally the man still looked exhausted. This time he didn't. He actually looked good. That was wonderful, but he was curious as to why. Then that there were brochures from Gringotts spread all over the table, the ones that advertised houses for sale. That, though, wasn't unexpected as it was one of the topics that Albus wanted him to bring up.
“They will. Just give them some time,” Remus told him after settling in. Pushing aside not only the brochures, but the mass of parchments piled all over, he took his tea and sipped it. Setting it aside, he folded his hands on the table then asked, “What was it you wanted to cover with me?”
Focusing, Arthur said, “Albus wants me to go over several topics with you. He thought it was better that I do it in person rather than try to swap owls over the matter.” Pulling out a parchment with the list, he sat it down on the table.
Consulting it, he decided to start with the easiest first. “He said to let you know that he's looking into the growth part when it comes to Harry as he's not sure himself. There just isn't much out there on the topic, so it's going to take him time to find something.” Looking at Remus, he softened his voice then added gently, “He doesn't think he will grow anymore, though. It's his thought that the death stunted that. He told me to pass along that Harry shouldn't have health problems and everything should function fine, but he thinks that the death stopped any future growth.”
Taking that in, Remus nodded and gave a soft sigh. “Understood. I thought that might be the case.”
“He did add that he thinks other biological functions should continue on as normal, such as him finishing adolescence as that is slightly different from growth,” Arthur added.
“We'll deal accordingly,” Remus nodded.
After another glance at the list, he pressed on, “He's also offering again for Severus to brew the Wolfsbane for you. And he gives his word that nothing untoward will be said by him. He'll just deliver it and leave, nothing more. It's his thought that he gets this set up now so everyone can prepare for next month.”
“No,” Remus told him firmly with a shake of his head. “Absolutely not. Severus is one that needs to stay as far away as possible. Sirius made it very clear that he's one he can't handle having around. Even mentioning Severus' name set off a reaction with him that wasn't pleasant.” Seeing Arthur about to say something, he held up his hand then told him, “Albus may say Severus won't, but we both know the man, Arthur. He can't help himself. While he won't be overt, he will end up making some kind of loaded remark. The minute he does that, he's going to set Sirius off and probably myself. With all we're dealing with, the mere thought of what Severus could unleash with what he sees as normal will cause a reaction no one will like. And if the remark is towards Harry, the hell that could come won't be something anyone will be able to deal with easily. In fact, Severus might not make it out of the house. It could cause all out war. He may think that he can defend himself fine, but he'll be facing both Sirius and me. And once he invokes that, Harry as well to defend us. We don't need that, Arthur. This is hard enough as it is, we don't need something like that added in to make it all the worse.”
Sighing, Arthur couldn't help but agree with Remus. Albus, at times, thought he had Severus on a leash and that reasoning with the man worked. It didn't. Severus—the impulse to do what he always did seemed to override that and he just started. “I'll let him know.” Quietly, he asked, “You do have a way to get the potion?” He assumed, with Harry in the house, that Remus had set up something.
“It's been handled,” Remus told him with a firm nod. “Tell Albus it's nothing to worry about.”
Nodding to that, Arthur pressed on, “About the Dursleys—he understands that issues will come with seeing them, but he's asking that as soon as Sirius can handle it to make a short showing over there. They just—well, you know what they're like, Remus. We're desperately trying to help them and putting warding up as we know the danger they're in. They just don't want to listen. Petunia knows what we're like because of her sister and understands that sometimes odd things happen. She seems as stubborn on the topic as her husband. He thinks that just five minutes will be all it'll take. And to let Sirius handle it just so they can see that Harry is, indeed, alive. That should be enough to drive the point home that they're in danger. We're all afraid that with Harry back, they are in worse danger than before. And we don't have the bodies to keep covering over there to protect them. Though Arabella can keep watch, it will take time for her to get in touch with us then for us to get over there.”
Sighing, Remus looked down at the table, rubbing a hand over his mouth. He assumed that something would have to be done about the Dursleys soon and they would have to help, but he could see Albus' point with this as well. After a couple of moments, he said, “Let me get with Sirius alone to see what we can work out. And I don't foresee us being able to do anything for a couple of weeks. He's just not in the shape it would take to handle those—people. Couple that with what we know of how they treated Harry and we're going to have issues. I'll see what I can manage though. See if Albus has a plan that might work for this. If he does, I might be able to get with Sirius to try something that can get it across. I don't know. There is just no chance we can do it now. Even mentioning Severus set Sirius off. The Dursleys might end up having a worse reaction.”
“I'll see what he has in mind,” Arthur told him with a firm nod. “He might have something you can easily work with. Harry may know something that can help as well.” Seeing Remus nod, he pressed on, “This is one that won't affect you until you start going back out in public, but Albus wants you aware; Draco Malfoy.”
“What about him?” Remus asked, puzzled. Oh, he knew about Draco and Harry's rivalry, if you wanted to call it that, but he didn't see how that might affect anything.
Sighing and shaking his head, Arthur told him, tone weary, “He's being what can only be termed as a problem child. He saw Harry's death as something to use to torment people. Since Harry's return, he's making it a point to be more overt in that, even bragging about taking the Dark Mark. On the train ride home from school, he was overheard telling his friends that Harry was someone he was going to personally take care of or deliver to You-Know-Who. We don't know if it's just an empty threat or not. He's angry right now, very angry. The stunts he's pulled in school for the last year have not only gotten him tossed off the Quidditch team and banned from playing, but lost him his Prefects badge. You taught him, Remus, so you know what he's like when he doesn't get his way or is called on his actions. Albus is worried that as angry as he is, this might not be an idle threat. While he might not end up getting the Mark, he may try something with Harry as a way to curry favor from He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named.”
Up until this point, nothing had really set Remus off when it came to this mess and handling it. Yes, things bothered him, like the letter from Ginny, but had not invoked a reaction like it did from Sirius. Until now. The anger that welled up in him, not to mention the instinct to eliminate the threat against Harry, was almost more than he could handle. Reaching up and rubbing his eyes with a now trembling hand, he began to count backwards to get himself under control. With that, he was also damned sure that Sirius and Harry felt it as well and it would bring them into the kitchen.
Eyes wide, Arthur didn't know what to do. It was obvious from the red flush that infused Remus' face that he was angry. Then the trembling started. Swallowing thickly, he asked, tone quivering, “Remus? Are you alright?”
Nodding, Remus told him in a shaky voice, “I'm fine. Give it a minute.” Keeping right on counting, he took deep breaths until he felt like he was calm enough to continue. In a voice that was still slightly shaky, he said, “We'll keep that in mind and watch for him. He won't get very far if he tries something foolish, not with Sirius and I around. And Harry isn't defenseless. However, the three of us won't go out alone and will ensure to keep on full alert.”
Giving a shaky nod, Arthur told him, “Albus wants you to keep an eye around this house as well. Narcissa knows where it is. He's sure that what they did with Draco is apt to set not only him off, but his father. As much as Lucius is in disfavor at the moment, he might try something to regain his position. That you need to be wary of.”
Feeling more in control, Remus told him, “I'll ensure that the detection spells we put up are tweaked to set off an alarm if anyone from that family comes close. I've made sure no one can get through the wards, so we're safe.”
About to press on, though now wary, Arthur jumped a little when the door to the kitchen swung open. He chuckled, though, when he saw the puppy bound in with the toy Padfoot had in his mouth when he came into the house. Watching the small dog dive under the table, he then saw Padfoot come in and try the same thing. However, the animagus was too big to slide under like the puppy. Shaking his head as Padfoot tried to get under the table another way to chase the puppy, barking, only to get a bop on the nose from the little paw that shot out, he laughed. “Oh, that is cute! Where did you get the dog? He's adorable?”
Feeling a little better and more in control now that the two were close, Remus smiled then told him, “And if you say cute and adorable around Little Paws, he's apt to chew on your ankle. He doesn't like being called that.” Watching Padfoot try to shove one of the benches out a little so he could squeeze under the table to go after Little Paws, Remus snorted then grinned as the little dog hopped up onto the bench then crawled on the table from the opposite side. Walking over to where Padfoot was still trying to get under the table, the dog dropped the toy then barked at Padfoot. Seeing the massive bear-like dog look at the little one, Remus snorted. Reaching out and petting Padfoot's head, he said, “He got the better of you, didn't he?”
Shifting back, Sirius planted himself on the bench by Remus then picked up Little Paws and held him close, rubbing his ears. Both he and Harry had felt the unpleasant sensations through the bond and decided to come into the kitchen, though it appeared Remus had calmed down. That was good, but they now wanted to be close in case something else set him off. Grinning, he admitted, “He did. Padfoot might be overpowering, but he's sneaky.”
Smiling as he looked at the puppy, Arthur said, “He is too cute!”
Growling in Mister Weasley's direction at the use of that word, the puppy then got a disgruntled look on his face as the man chuckled at the not least bit threatening sound.
“And that was not the least bit intimidating, Little Paws,” Remus said with a smile and snort, reaching out to stroke the dog's head.
Shifting back and straddling his two bond mate's legs, Harry sighed and looked disgruntled. “No, it wasn't.” Leaning against Sirius, he said hi to Mister Weasley, but then went quiet as he dealt with the ramifications from the bond. He would be here, though, as they hadn't liked what came through the bond.
Though startled that the puppy was Harry, Arthur gave a hearty hello to the two of them. This was something that he would report to Albus, though it wasn't an item that would be a big issue.
Taking a beer from an elf and handing a butterbeer to Harry, Sirius settled in. He wasn't going to ask what set Remus off at this point. He would wait until after Arthur left as Remus seemed fine now. “So, what are we going over?” He asked, looking between the two.
“I'll fill you in on what we covered when Arthur leaves. He has some other items he wants to go over, so no need to rehash it now.” Seeing Sirius nod, Remus motioned for Arthur to press on.
Though still slightly wary, Arthur moved to the next item on the list. “Albus said if you're going to sell the house, that he will buy it for the same price Gringotts will give you. Once you're ready, of course. We assume that won't be for a while yet.”
“Fine with me,” Sirius said with a snort. “We've been going through what Gringotts has for sale and we think we have something. It'll take some work to get it up to where we want it, but it's perfect for us.”
“There's an older home in the East End that is similar to this one, though much nicer with a pleasant interior, we saw when looking through the brochures. We all think that's the one we want,” Remus told him. “If we don't find anything better, that's what we're taking. Once Sirius and Harry can go back out again, we'll be relocating to whatever we buy. Albus can then take it off Sirius' hands.”
“I'll pass that along,” Arthur said with a firm nod. The Burrow was what they were using for Order meetings at the moment, but the problem with the wards on it made it dangerous. It was far better to find somewhere else to hold meetings. “He was also wondering if, when you can handle it, you would be participating in the Order again.”
Sighing, Remus looked at Sirius then waited. That he wasn't sure of.
Thinking it over, holding Harry close, Sirius shook his head then said, “We may sit in on meetings, but we won't be doing anything else or actively participating in any kind of whatever. We just can't. That's all there is to it. By that point we might be able to go back out in public, but it's going to take a long time to get a handle on so much. Tossing us back in the middle of this war isn't something that's happening, Arthur. There are too many areas that it can affect with us to actively do anything. Even then, it's going to take time before we can do much of anything, even attend meetings. There is plenty here that we need to work and deal with before we even think about that.” So far, Sirius was dealing with Arthur being here just fine. It wasn't real comfortable, but holding Harry close was helping. It was at least keeping the instincts in check, though part of him wanted to put on a show that Harry and Remus belonged to him. That was good and showing things were starting to level out slightly.
“I'll pass that along,” Arthur nodded. Then he added, “Even just sitting in on meetings and giving your perspective would be a huge help. We all see things differently and that's what’s needed. You know there are plenty that just sit in.”
“We'll consider that,” Sirius told him with a firm nod.
“Just keep in mind that wherever we go, Harry comes with. That includes meetings. I know Albus is trying to keep the younger set out of this, but it's not an option to leave Harry home,” Remus told him firmly.
“I'll pass that along as well,” Arthur assured him. “The next thing he wants to know is the spells you mentioned to negate some of the effects you’re dealing with or at least ease them. What he told me was he needs them to make sure what he comes up with won't conflict with what you did and make matters worse. With that, he asked that you not send them by owl. I'm sure you know why that is. He's afraid that someone might try to intercept an owl then it would give the other side an advantage they don't need. What he thought was to just give them to me and I'll deliver them. The same with the ones he will send back to you.”
Looking at Sirius, Remus waited to see what he had to say. He didn't think the spells on the collar, what were working with the worst of the effects, would give away anything they did, but he wanted to see what Sirius thought.
Thinking it over as he glanced at Remus, Sirius sighed then said, “Tell him we’ll send what we can. There are a couple we just can't. That's for obvious reasons. Just pass along to send us the spells and a list of any side effects. We should be able to figure out if they will work or not. The same with conflicting. Some here—we're just not giving it up, Arthur. I'm sure you understand why.”
“I do, as does Albus,” Arthur told him with a nod. Pressing on, he changed topics. This one would end up tetchy, he knew that, so he had to proceed gently. “He's been looking into the prophecy and how it might relate to what happened.” Seeing wary looks from the two older men and Harry slumping then looking down, he pressed on, “What he thinks is this; part of it was fulfilled with Harry's death. The rest comes down to ending the mess. And he doesn't think Harry has to do that. It's his opinion that Harry's death set it in motion so this nightmare can end. Before that happens, there are matters to tend to. What those are, I don't know as he didn't say. He did want me to pass along that he'll handle that part and when the time comes for the big fight we know is brewing, we can take care of the problem. However, he said he's not sure the other side will see it that way. Many are interpreting that prophecy as Harry has to face You-Know-Who to end this and may push for that. The other side may as well. He doesn't know. It's another thing he cautions you about and says to make sure to watch yourselves. For now, you're safe. Albus says he's sure when you start venturing out again that there are going to be problems.”
Feeling those instincts starting to spike again, including some from Remus, Sirius groaned and held Harry tightly. The urge to fondle the collar, as the spells on it helped to soothe all of them as it connected with the bond in various ways, was there. He didn't though. This was something he had to start dealing with in another way. Trembling slightly, gritting his teeth, he looked up at the ceiling, trying to keep himself under control. Shaking his head when he finally got it to a level he could manage, he looked at Remus, who was glancing at him, then said, tone shaky, “Understood and we'll deal accordingly when the time comes.”
Nodding at that, wary as he saw the look on Sirius' face, something that told him to tread cautiously, he added, “He said he wants to set something up with the three of you when you start venturing out that will signal if there's a problem. That way you can get help. It's something that he said will take time to manage, so he needs to know soon what you want to do with that.”
“I think we'll let him,” Remus said gently, making sure to reach over and put a hand on Sirius' leg to help calm him. “As long as it's not something overt anyway. We can do the Patronus, of course, but we'd rather have something better than that.”
“I'll pass it along,” Arthur told him firmly. “You can always grab one or more of us to go with you. No one would mind. If it's in the Alley, Fred and George have the shop there. You can always Floo in that way and alert them that you're around. They can easily get a message to us if there's a problem.”
“We'll keep that in mind,” Remus nodded.
Though there was so much to ask and more people, including himself, wanted to know about what was going on and how they managed what they did, Arthur didn't think it was a wise idea to delve into that. A couple of the topics had set off problems. Sirius still didn't look like he was completely under control, so it was best not to go there. Focusing on Harry, he smiled then said, “Molly and the rest are looking forward to seeing you again, all of you. She wants to have a special dinner when you feel you can manage. And your friends are anxious to see you again, Harry.”
Looking at Mister Weasley, Harry struggled a little with answering. This was still uncomfortable and he kept glancing at Sirius because he felt like he needed permission to answer. Finally, after a nod from Sirius, he said, “Tell them I miss them too.” That's where he stopped as it was growing uncomfortable for him. This was a big part of the issues he was going to have when they did start going back out in public or around those he knew.
Seeing the reaction from Harry, a sad look passed over Arthur's face. He understood enough of this mess to get that this was part of the reaction from what they did, but it didn't make it easier to experience. The Harry he had known and seen for so long just wasn't there. From past interactions, Harry was far more talkative and outgoing than this. And it bothered him. It was like this person wasn't the Harry he had known for so long, one he thought of as one of his own children.
Observing the look on Arthur's face, assuming he knew what the issue was, Remus told him gently, “Give it time. He has his own problems to deal with. In a while, he'll be back to what you remember.”
Sad look still on his face, Arthur said, “It's just troubling.”
Holding Harry close, feeling his anxiety, Sirius said, “It's nothing to worry about. We all just need time to deal with what's going on.”
Nodding at that and sighing, Arthur pressed on with some more mundane matters Albus wanted him to talk about. As he did, he kept glancing at Harry. The young wizard was leaning against Sirius, eyes shut, acting like he was not even listening. That—of all of this, Harry was what was bothering him the most. He would deal with it, though, and hope it improved.
Clutching Harry close, almost to the point that it was hard for him to breath, Sirius fingered the collar around his neck, trying to control himself after Remus went through the part about Draco. Shaking his head, he told him, voice a low snarl, “If that little shite thinks to try anything, he won't know what hit him. Just—no! I'm not going to play this game. One move from him in Harry's direction and I'll handle him personally.”
Giving a shaky nod, Remus said, “I understand. We both will handle the issue. He—I'm not sure what he thinks by even uttering that, but he doesn't know what he could invoke if he tries. This isn't school and we won't put up with it.”
“Fuck no we won't!” Sirius snarled, that sheen in his eyes back full force. “I get he's one that brags and is just a spoiled little boy used to getting his way, but this is one area he needs to back off.”
“And there is no way to get him to do that,” Remus said softly, shaking his head, trembling hands clutched on the table. “We just have to be wary as there isn't anyone that can talk to him to get him to see sense. If they even tried, they'd have to give up plenty of what's going on with us. That we can't allow to happen.”
Sheen in his eyes more pronounced than ever, Sirius grinned evilly, “There might be a way. And I think I'm going to implement it when we go back out. I'm not playing this game with people. They want to be rotten arses, they'll find out how nasty I can be. I didn't grow up in this house and have to tolerate my family without knowing some of the stupid shite that Purebloods do.”
Knowing what Sirius was talking about, Remus gave him a wary look then said, gently, “I think you need to wait and think it over more, Sirius. The hell that can come from that plan will drop us in the middle of this war and have the one side focus in our direction.”
“Let them,” Sirius snarled, looking at him. “We'll be safe. That we can damned well make sure of. This shite—no! We don't need it, even if it is just big talk. Because I doubt Draco is the only one that's going to try.”
Feeling what he was through the bond, Remus gave a shaky nod then told Sirius, “I agree. We just need time, Sirius. Doing this right away is a very bad idea. Let's see what happens between now and when we can brave going out again.”
“One move in Harry's direction and I won't give a shite about Draco's age. He's done for,” Sirius assured him in a low snarl. “The same with anyone else that decides to try to fuck with us. This is not a game.”
“No, it’s not,” Remus agreed softly, reaching over to make sure his hand was on Sirius. This reaction was the worst he had seen since their return and there was very little he could do to alleviate it. The same with Harry. The younger man was curled up to Sirius, head resting on his shoulder, arms wrapped around him. In that position, Sirius knew he was 'protected', but that wasn't helping much either. Seeing him still shaking from rage, Remus suggested, “Why don't we go outside and practice defensive spells. That should help, Sirius. We can teach Harry some new ones while we work off stress. You know, like we used to do with some dummies?”
Though hard to think while dealing with the pull that was there, Sirius gave a nod. “We'll do that. Blasting something to bits might help with this.” Giving Harry a squeeze and a kiss on the head, he let him loose then urged him to stand. “Let's see if this helps.” Something had to because the urge to go find the threat and eliminate it was fairly high. He didn't need that.
Leaning back in his chair and stroking his beard, Albus looked at the list of spells Arthur had brought him. Though he knew it wasn't complete, he had enough here to take a good guess at part of what the two had done. And it was brilliant. Leave it to Remus and Sirius to come up with something that would help like this. He thought there were a couple he could add to that collar, as he was sure the spells listed were interwoven on that, to aid them. This was good.
Smiling, he set the list down then began to summon the books he had collected. If he was correct in what they had done, he knew some calming spells that would aid in the recovery period. There were a few potions that might help as well. He would send the names of those along, too. While he didn't think the two would allow Severus to get involved, at least that was the feeling that he got from what Arthur said, they might be able to get their hands on the potions.
As he jotted down notes, stroking his beard, he thought he wanted to see that collar Harry was wearing. It would be the key to many of the things they did. And he was intrigued by it, that's for sure, certain it played a big role in what went on and would be a focal point for some things in the future. That was something he wanted to know about, though he wasn't sure that the two would let him get too close to it. If he was right, that collar not only designated Harry as the submissive, but tied into the bond in a way that allowed them to use each other's feelings in a few ways, such as to calm down. It may also be the one thing that gave Harry the free will. Though it was a collar that bound him in a way, it allowed him to take it off if he wanted. That was probably the key to what they did. And it was a very simple idea. That he liked. It wouldn't aid anything to know, obviously, but for his own information, as one never knew when it might be useful, he wanted to hear what was done. Of course, he wouldn't ever pass it on to anyone, that he would assure them, but something so ingenious was a thing he wanted to know about.
Going to work, he planned to see if Arthur couldn't deliver the spells in the next day or so. However, he made a mental note to get with Severus about Draco. The reaction Arthur talked about from Remus was enough to tell him that something needed done with the Malfoy child before he unleashed a hell on himself that he might not be able to get out of.
