Chapter 11
Rubbing a trembling hand over his face, Harry shook his head when faced with his breakfast. He couldn't eat this. It was just too much. The idea of even trying was more than he could take, honestly. Slumping, he told Sirius in a soft, uneven voice, “I can't face this.”
Sliding into the chair by Harry, Sirius told him, “I need you to eat something. Anything. I don't give a damn what it is. Is there anything you think you can handle? Even if it's just something small or not a breakfast item?” With that, he poured Harry some juice and put it in front of him. That he thought his godson wouldn't have a problem with.Sipping the juice, trying not to spill it, Harry sighed. “I'm not hungry,” he mumbled, shaking his head.Groaning, Sirius said, “You have to eat something, Harry, even if it's small. I don't care what. We need something in your stomach for you to take some shite for me.”Looking at Sirius, not comprehending that, Harry asked, “What?” All he wanted to do was go back to bed. He was more awake than he had been, but exhausted. All he could think about was sleep, nothing more than that. Anything else—he couldn't handle it.“Just pick something to eat and I'll explain it,” Sirius told him softly, putting a hand on Harry's back and rubbing it.Slumping, Harry started at the table then slowly shook his head. “Just some toast with jam,” he finally sighed.Sending the plate off with the elf and pleased that the requested items appeared quickly, Sirius pushed them in front of Harry. When his godson began to nibble on a piece of toast, though not looking like he was happy about it, Sirius began explaining. “We've figured out part of the problem, I think. And it's affecting Tom and me as well. While it's not your fault, it's coming from your end, Harry.”Looking at Sirius, brow furrowed as he ate the toast that didn't seem to have much flavor and seemed to taste off to him, Harry asked, “What's the problem then? And why do I have to take potions for it?” He wasn't sure, as tired as he was, if he would get it, but he wanted to try.Sliding closer, giving Harry a squeeze, Sirius explained, softly, trying to be as gentle about it as he could, “I think, from all you told me and what I saw, you're feeling pretty down about this whole mess we're in.” He thought if he didn't come out and say the word depression, Harry might take it better. At least he hoped he would. “Your way of dealing with it seems to be sleeping. That's normally fine, but it's so bad that it's affecting the two of us as well. So, we've got some potions for you to take. It's going to help you cope with what you're feeling in a better way, nothing more than that. They aren't going to dope you to the eyeballs or anything, just give you some assistance in getting a handle on what you're dealing with. Nothing more than that, you have my word on it.”Still looking at Sirius after shoving the last of the toast in his mouth, hoping his godfather wouldn't push him to eat more as he didn't think he could, Harry wasn't sure what to ask or say about that.Reaching up to run his fingers through Harry's hair, Sirius told him, keeping the same tone of voice, “It'll help, Harry. I don't like giving you anything for it, I want that out there now, but the bond is making it to where it's affecting all of us. Until we can figure out what in Merlin's good name is going on with that, we can't be affected that way.” Lowering his voice, he added, “And I can't stand to see you this way. I really can't. It's bothering me to no end.”“Harry--,” Sirius started, not sure how to word this. Thinking it over, he sighed then said, “We've been leaning on each other to get through this. I think that's the only reason we've managed to get along as well as we have so far. So, I need you as much as you need me to lean on. Without you, I've having my own problems with this. It's easier to deal with when I have you by my side. We might not be working on the same thing or you doing much, but being there helps me more than you know.”Pulling Harry close, he inclined his head and whispered, making sure only Harry could hear, “I've had the same kind of problems you are since leaving Azkaban. You've helped me deal with them more than you'll ever know. Even if it was just us talking with the mirrors, it helped. I understand completely what you're feeling. It's hard. It's even worse that we had no choice in this and are bound to someone that has caused so much hell for us. That makes it so hard to take and makes you feel hopeless. I'm feeling that myself, too. The potions will help, Harry, I swear they will. I wouldn't ask you to take them if they didn't.”Stopping, he pulled back and looked at Harry, who was gazing at him then said, “I need you too, Harry. More than you know. In so many ways. And it hurts to see you like this. So, for me, will you take them?” That's where he stopped, waiting to see what Harry said.Thinking over what Sirius said, Harry gazed at him. At the moment, that wasn't as easy as normal because he was so tired. What he honed in on, though, was that Sirius needed him. That was always something that got his attention as he would do anything in the world for his godfather. With a heavy sigh, he nodded. “I'll take it. What is it anyway?” He wanted to know, of course, but would take the potions as Sirius requested.“It's for depression,” Sirius told him honestly, though keeping a soothing voice. Before Harry could say anything since he tossed the word out there, he told him, “I swear it can help, Harry. It won't be immediate, but you'll start feeling better soon and will have more energy. There's nothing to be ashamed of in needing a bit of help to get through something this bad. Because you're my 'help' in doing it.”Looking down, shaking his head, Harry sighed. He couldn't easily wrap his mind around what Sirius was saying and make it relate to what he was feeling. He was just tired, nothing more. Shaking his head slowly, he sighed, “I'm just tired, Sirius. That's all.”“I know,” Sirius assured him. “That's part of it, Harry. You're worn out and just want to sleep. There's no energy to do anything. Nothing you eat tastes good. Even getting up to shower or use the loo takes almost more energy than you have. Sometimes you just don't have the energy to actually do it and put it off as long as you can.” Quietly, he asked, “That's what you're feeling, isn't it?”“Yes,” Harry admitted, looking at his godfather, confused. Depression was something he'd heard of before, of course, but not in the way Sirius just described. That meant he didn't understand how it related.“I thought so after working out what brought it on,” Sirius told him gently. “Depression takes many forms. What I just described are some of them. The situation we're in is enough to make anyone depressed. Even me. I'm feeling some of it, too. The potion will help you get a handle on it so you can cope.” Leaning forward, he kissed Harry on the forehead and asked, “Will you take it? For me?”“Yeah,” Harry sighed, trying to suss out all Sirius explained and said. Shaking his head, he just couldn't because it seemed too overwhelming. Shutting his eyes, he let his head hang forward, shoulders slumping.Grabbing the potion, Sirius held it out to Harry. Pleased when his godson grabbed then took it, he said, “Good. It won't work immediately, but you'll start feeling better soon. You have my word on that.” Seeing Harry look at him, he gave an internal sigh. To his eyes, Harry looked completely miserable. He got that being tired was factoring in there, but it just melded with what was probably driving the problem. And that wasn't something he could help, though he desperately wanted to.Putting a hand on the back of Harry's head and rubbing it, he imparted, “There's something else I want you to do for me when you feel up to it.”“What's that?” Harry asked with a sigh, just wanting to go climb back into bed and sleep some more.“I get you're the kind that doesn't really talk much about some of your problems, but I think you need to. That can only help. You know you can talk to me about anything. I want you to do that. No matter what it is. Once you put it out there, we'll discuss it and see what we can do.”“It's not that easy, Sirius,” Harry muttered, shaking his head and looking at the floor.“No, it's not,” Sirius admitted honestly. “I get that, believe me. If you don't think you can talk with me, talk to Nagini. She's given her word to Tom that she won't tell him what you say. I get she's not human and doesn't always comprehend like we do, but she'll listen to you and talk all she can about what's bothering you. Just don't expect it to be the same as talking to one of us. She's been worried about you too, Harry. As she's a tad attached to you, it's concerned her. She's more than willing to listen to you. Because she doesn't think like we do, she might see things better and can help in a way we can't because we over think all kinds of shite.”“I'll see if I can,” Harry told him softly, not looking up. Shaking his head, he sighed. “I want to go back to bed. I'm so tired.”“I figured,” Sirius told him, giving a sad smile. “How about this—I'll move everything I'm working on to the settee. You can curl up there and sleep with your head in my lap while I work. That way I have you around.”“That's fine,” Harry agreed. He honestly didn't care where he slept as long as he could sleep.Leaning over and giving Harry a kiss on the side of the head, Sirius told him, “Finish your juice while I get it all moved. Then you can get some more sleep.” While this wasn't the best yet, he at least got Harry moving how he wanted him. That was a plus. Now they just had to wait for the potion to get in his system and start working. All he hoped was that it was fast as he wanted Harry back with him.
Coming into the game room, where the elves said Black was holed up, Tom glanced at what was going on. It appeared that Sirius was hard at it with the multitude of books they were trying to find information in. Harry was in there with him, though curled up on the settee with his head in Black's lap, sleeping. Nagini was draped over the sleeping wizard. From what he could hear, she was talking softly to him reassuring him about many things and discussing what she liked to do. He figured that Harry would hear her in some way and it might help.
Conjuring a chair by the settee, he took as seat then asked, “Any luck finding anything useful?”“Not so far,” Sirius groaned, putting the book down then running his fingers through his hair. “Just some bits that I haven’t seen so far, but they aren't much help. More like areas of working together with the magic. That's not what we need.”“No, that’s rather useless,” Tom snorted. At some point it might come into play and they could avail themselves of it for something, but that would take plenty of work before they could get there. Glancing at Harry, he asked, “Did you speak with him about the potions?”“He's agreed to take them,” Sirius told him, reaching down to put a hand on his godson's head. “While I didn't get him to talk much as he's so damned tired, I did manage to get the confirmation that's what he's dealing with. I also planted the seed about Nagini. We'll see where this goes.” Sighing, looking down at Harry, he added, “And I'll keep an eye out for adverse symptoms. These potions aren't harmless. Some of them can actually make what's going on worse and cause suicidal thoughts to come into play. That we sure as hell don't need.”“True,” Tom admitted. “I've not had dealings with them before to know what they can do.”“They aren't nice,” Sirius told him softly. “The suicidal bit is the most troublesome. He doesn't need that.” Shaking his head, he added, “And we would be just as affected.”That wasn't something Tom had thought of either. And he sure as hell didn't like it. Saying nothing, he glanced at Harry again, wondering if there was another way to go about this.“Some can cause an almost zombie-like state,” Sirius pressed on, slumping. “At least until the person gets used to them. Another very not helpful factor and I refuse to have him like that. This is bad enough.”“Something else true,” Tom admitted, not sure what else to say.“Then there's the fact that most are addictive,” Sirius added with a groan. “Not sure about this one, but I know some they have to actually wean you off of.”That was more hell no there as far as Tom was concerned. “Let me see what the Healer I'm talking to about this has to say. He might know something better.”“I'm going to do what I can with him. Let me see what I can manage,” Sirius told him, shaking his head. “What I'm going to try is to keep him out of the bedroom. He might be sleeping, but he'll hear some of this. That's why I have the Wireless on. This afternoon I'll go outside with him. I don't know. Just—I don't know. That's all there is to it.” Admitting that was hard to do as it brought on a helpless feeling for him. He wanted to fix this like he did with so much when it came to Harry, but couldn't in this case. That made it worse than ever and didn't help all he was dealing with on his end either. After a couple minutes of silence, Sirius said, “I said something to Nagini about staying close and talking to him. It's my feeling that she might get through to him when I can't and get him to talk since she won't say anything. We'll see.”Looking at his familiar, who was doing just that, Tom nodded. He was tired, honestly, though managing to stay somewhat functional. That was the best he was getting with this. What they needed was for Harry to come around so it improved. The rub was he had no way to do that. He couldn't order it like he would with his minions. There was no chance Harry would trust him enough to allow him to talk it out so he had an idea of what else might help. Black wasn't getting much of anywhere with him when he was the one that had the most chance of doing that. Which left them with naught but to wait for the potions to work. After a few moments of more silence, Tom told Sirius, “If you can think of anything that might help, let me know. I'll do what I can.”“Breaking the bond,” Sirius told him quickly. Sighing, he added, “That's not possible, I get it.”“I know.” Tom sighed. On the heels of that once more came the thought of revenge over this debacle. Already he was honing what he would do to the brat that caused it. He thought he had something that would work best, but would keep tweaking. With that, he made a mental note to get with some contacts he had to get that fool Fudge to stop helping Lucius, or trying anyway as nothing he was doing was working. That he wanted done, fast.As there wasn't any more he could do here, Tom stood then said, “If you need me, send an elf.” Then he swept out.“Arse,” Sirius muttered, though without any vehemence in his voice. Rubbing Harry's head, he stared at the stack of books there. After a shake of his head, he grabbed the one on the top of the tallest pile and went to work once more. While it wasn't getting him anywhere, it was at least something to occupy his time.
Drumming his skeletal fingers on the desk, Tom was leaned back in his chair, staring at all that was piled there. At the moment, he was in the old place he used for meetings, so he was tending to matters dealing with the normal end of 'business'. He had gotten with Ministry contacts and they were going to work on Fudge. It was his hope that the foolish idiot would get the hint and back the hell off assisting Lucius in any way. If they didn't manage that, he was getting with major donors and having them pull support. Though Lucius was a big fish when it came to donations, what he could manage would be almost crippling for Fudge and he would know it.
At this juncture, he wasn't as effective in plenty as normal, though those he dealt with didn't realize that since he made damned sure any meetings he had with them were short. With what was going on, he made sure it appeared that he was angry, something that would leave them not questioning anything and just wanting out lest they incur his wrath over something stupid. Wise move as he probably would end up plenty angry and tossing curses about. Part of what was going on with that was what was coming from Harry. Another part, as odd as it sounded, was Nagini wasn't with him. It wasn't that she helped anything, other than inspire fear in those he talked with, but she was a creature that was always with him when he worked. There wasn't a problem with her, of course, it was just she wanted to stay with Harry, though he was asleep. With what he had her doing, he could easily understand why and approved of it as it could only help. It was—well, he was used to having her with him, so it felt odd when she wasn't. That didn't help.Sighing, he shook his head. Something needed to give here and they had to have information. Well, that wasn't right as they had information, just nothing that would actually help them! And sorting through all they had was going to take time. That they didn't have either as this bond was already affecting plenty. Which meant he had to think of another way to get what they needed. He was sure, as Sirius said, that Albus knew plenty. What he wasn't willing to risk was Sirius contacting him to get it. Who knew what that sneaky old coot would do with any information coming from this direction. Most certainly a chance he couldn’t take.Rubbing a hand over his face, he tried to think. He needed what that old man knew about this. It might not be much, but any bit would help. It came down to that he didn't know how to get it out of him without Black getting in touch in some way.Mind circling the problem, he tried to come up with a solution. The only thing that came to mind was Severus. Though he had doubts there when it came to loyalty, the man might be the key to him getting the information they desperately needed. He just had to do some wiggling to manage.Staring at his desk, he thought it over then the most basic of plans began to form. If he summoned Severus to get information on what was going on, as the man would have that, of course, he might be able to prod him into jarring other bits loose. After all, Severus was about the best there was when it came to potions, so he would know what was done, how it would affect someone, the bond that formed, all that. If he didn't know, he could push him to find out. Of course, he wouldn't reveal what he had on this or about Black and Potter, but he might get something useful in the guise of wanting to know what was going on. After all, that would be expected of him with his interest in Harry.Deciding that was the way to go about this, he sat up straight then checked the time. Though it was early in the evening, he could manage now. Supper had ended at school, so Severus would have time free to come. As he hadn't summoned him yet over this, if he didn't soon it would look odd anyway.Standing, he pulled up his sleeve and touched his own Dark Mark with his wand, sending the signal to Severus. Once that was done, he swept out to the normal meeting area and waited. Once Severus started talking, he would have a better idea of what he had to work with and questions to ask. All he hoped was he could get a better hint of where to look and sources for so much.
