Every step Hermione took felt like a step towards her doom. Shouldn't she have felt overjoyed at the potential of getting her friends back? Instead it seemed as if she was walking into danger. It felt more terrifying than watching Harry fall off his broom, again. Her instincts told her something was wrong. But she had no idea how to listen to her own gut feelings, they'd always followed Harry's. Panic was overtaking her nerves as she wound up the stairs towards the tower.
Before Hermione knew it, she was in front of the portrait, breathing hard and clutching at anything to keep herself up. She muttered the rotten password and ran as quickly as she could to her dorm. The brunette was completely oblivious to the two dozen eyes following her every move, the accompanying mouths agape.
Once she reached the door to her dorm she opened it with a clang. Her vision was going in and out of focus, she felt light headed and was hyperventilating. She tried to gain her composure, tried to hold herself up in the door frame but had to give up. She sat on the ground, in the middle of the door.
The noise had made Ginny look up from the letter she'd been reading. If looks could kill, Hermione would have died the instant Ginny laid eyes on her. "You made Harry kick Ron out?" The fiery young lady whispered in an icy tone that shocked Hermione. She still found it hard to breathe and shook her head. "Keep...reading." She managed between gasps.
Ginny couldn't believe the nerve of her former friend and chose to ignore her. She'd broken her brother's heart and was now setting her boyfriend against her. She deserved a little pain. "He understands you now?!" Ginny suddenly yelled. The sound hit Hermione's ears like a slap to the face.
"Gin...please. This was never my choice. Don't you see?" Hermione had calmed down considerably, but was still seated in the middle of the doorway. She looked at the younger witch, with hope in her eyes. "Ron lied to you both. I was pregnant with his baby...but never willingly. None of it was up to me."
The last words came out as a whisper, Hermione could once again feel tears stinging. She was done with crying.
"Do you mean to say Ron...violated you?" Ginny asked incredulously. Hermione nodded in response, knowing her walls would crumble if she said a word. "And you got pregnant?" Another nod. "Before you broke it off?" She shook her head. "After?" A pause, then a negative head shake. "Wait...During the family dinner? Is that why you disappeared?" Hermione let out a small sob as she gave one last nod.
A heavy silence filled the room. Hermione composing herself as much as she could, Ginny mulling everything over. "Oh my...Hermione I've been so horrible to you." The dorm had been so quite you could've heard a needle drop; but even in that moment the words were whispered so low, Hermione barely caught them. Suddenly Ginny was beside her on the floor, muttering "I'm so sorry" over and over while the girls hugged.

Draco found himself in front of the mirror, staring at it diligently. It showed him with Hermione. They were in an embrace that made you wonder where one began and the other ended. It was like they were clinging onto each other for dear life. She looked different, but it was definitely Hermione. Her image was curvy and her hair was curly, but tame. And she was happy, so happy that it radiated. There was no doubt that she was ecstatic. He looked himself over, once again he was faced with short sleeves and no trace of his sin tattooed on his skin. The sight of his bare arms made him roll up his sleeve and outline the brand with his finger tip. A shiver ran across his skin by the touch, memories flooding his mind. The blond shook his head to clear his thoughts. As he looked back in the mirror, his reflection shook his head as well, but not in the same fashion. It was a firm "no," as opposed to Draco's mind clearing.
The reflection held up both arms, showing the blank skin. To Draco's surprise, Hermione bent down to kiss the arm where his mark had been. It was a tender peck, like she had forgiven his trespasses. There was no fear or revulsion between them. The couple in the mirror commanded his attention again; kissing each other on the lips. A gentle, loving kiss. It was just a show of affection; nothing more, nothing less. Finally Hermione put her hand on Draco's arm, covering the location of his tattoo. As soon as she had, his reflection kissed her forearm, exactly like she had done to him. As the kiss was delivered a pain shot through him. It reached from his finger tips to his shoulder.
He looked at the source of the pain; his mark was a bright red. It seared like it did the night it had been applied. As quickly as it had come, the pain was gone. He looked up just in time to see Hermione remove her hand and watch them press their lips together one last time.
Had they really just given him the way to remove the mark? Draco looked up at his reflection, searching for the answer. Once again they were tucked into each other, arms wrapped tightly around the other. He felt slightly unsettled watching. It was as if he was interrupting a private moment between them. Slowly, he walked away, taking his eyes off them at the very last second. He was trying to confirm to himself...whatever it was that was going on. Draco still had no clue. Before he knew it the back of his knees bumped into the bed. He plopped down and closed his eyes, he had the full intention of thinking over what he'd seen and nothing more.
~*~*~*~
Draco woke with a start hours later. He stretched out expecting Hermione to have joined him but felt nothing but a cold and empty bed next to him. He conjured up the time and saw it was just past 10 o'clock, she usually would have been here by now. In before curfew, out once it lifted. None of the professors suspected they weren't in their dorms.
He shifted uncomfortably, he'd fallen asleep with shoes on and all yet had still managed to tangle himself in the sheets. What a mess. Just like his first night in the room, a set of pajamas appeared in the closet and as soon as he lifted himself off the bed the sheets were changed. The room had switched allegiance, at least for the night. It was a small relief to know that Hermione wasn't the only one to have control of the room, he'd often felt like he was invading her space.
He slowly changed out of his clothes into the PJ bottoms. So far he'd been respectful of Hermione and always worn a full set, but if the room was all his tonight, he'd be comfortable. He looked down at his forearm again. Once again his fingers traced the mark, nothing had changed. The pain was still vivid in his mind, as well as the glow. It had seemed so bright, so red. He almost couldn't believe what he had seen. Had it been a dream?
The length of his nap left him feeling wide awake. With a sigh Draco walked over to the ever changing bookshelf and found a plethora of books pertaining to mirrors, tattoos and curses. He carefully read each the titles, finally settling on Magical Mirrors of the Wizarding World as well as How Tattoos Work. He couldn't explain how, but he felt like these two books would have the answers to all his questions.
Much like Hermione would, he sat down at the desk and cracked open the first book to the index. Her ran his finger down the words and stopped at "The Mirror of Erised." Erised...desire? Could it truly be? Draco quickly flipped to the page and began reading:
The Mirror of Erised in its simplest form will show the person gazing into it what they desire most. The inscription states that "I show not your face but your heart’s desire." Many a man has gone insane from searching for the truth in the mirror instead of outside of it. Jan Spiegelbeeld, a Dutch wizard, stumbled upon the mirror during his travels in 1480 and became entranced by the vision in front of him. His life's mission had been to find new, virgin land, and in the mirror he saw this New World. Instead of setting out to actually find this location, he first attempted to study every aspect of the land in front of him. Not finding any clues, Spiegelbeeld attempted to use the mirror as a portal and failed miserably. His spiraling depression lead to his suicide in 1497 when John Cabot reached North America for the first time since the Vikings.
Other sources have shown that the Mirror can reveal answers about one's hearts desires. Jeanne d'Arc, also known as Joan of Arc, asked the Mirror how France could free itself from English rule during the Hundred Years' War, as this was her truest desire. The Mirror revealed her leading in battle against the English and succeeding. Her king was a muggle, therefore she explained this vision as Saints speaking to her. As a Roman Catholic, this was a plausible explanation where as a magic mirror would not have been.
It is therefore believed that the mirror can show you how to achieve your wishes, as long as you do not become obsessed with the image. In doing so, the admirer leaves behind reality and will never grasp what they are searching for.
Draco leaned back and stretched. It was quite possible the Mirror had shown him the way. He just had to work to achieve it instead of pining after the image of it. He would not be like Spiegelbeeld, but like Joan of Arc. He would be strong, fearless and slippery as a snake. Hadn't Joan dressed as a man? Hadn't she lead her army and won a siege in only 9 days? He marked the page and closed the book. Next time he saw Hermione he would have to tell her about the Mirror...all of it.
As if in slow motion, Draco reached out for the second book he had chosen. Once again he scanned the index but found little of interest. He closed the tome and walked back to the bed, hoping to catch some more sleep before the night was out. If he'd turned the index to the second page he would have found the section Cursed Tattoos and How to Remove Them.
Author's note: sorry for the wait, my plunnies had left and come back. The next chapter is already in the making so it should not take as long. But no promisses. Thank you those that have taken the time to review, rate and read. I made up Jan Spiegelbeeld and if you speak Dutch...so do I haha. I didn't just stick it into a translator. Sometimes I wonder about that so I figured I'd just say so. At some point French (or maybe I should say Quebecois) and Spanish might crop up too.
