Chapter 11
“Feeling a bit better, Severus?” Sirius asked, though grinning and trying not to snicker. They had returned from the shopping 'adventure' about a half an hour before. The stressed out Severus was now lying down with a cool wet flannel over his eyes. It wasn't that they drove him barmy, well—more than normal anyway, it was just the stress coupled with him giving them the basics of driving on the way back, nothing more.
“Some,” Severus grunted, actually feeling much better since they made it home safely without anyone getting caught or seeming to have drawn attention to themselves. In fact, from what he could tell, not many noticed them other than the clerks they dealt with. It was just the stress and dealing with Harry and Sirius for so long out amongst the public. That wasn't something he was used to, so it caused plenty of anxiety. Especially since Sirius had spent a small fortune on so much. As tense as he was during the shopping, he now had a mild headache from it and teaching the two the basics of driving. Time to relax was needed, nothing more, then he would feel better. As he lay there, Severus took in the sounds around him then his brow furrowed when he didn't hear Harry. There was some noise which he assumed were the elves tending to their purchases, but he wasn't able to hear the youngest of them. After propping himself up slightly, he lifted one corner of the flannel and asked, “Harry?” While part of the house was safe, he hoped Harry hadn't gone wandering off on his own to the areas they hadn't finished. Up to this point, he hadn't, but it made him wonder if Harry wasn't off doing something, like putting some things away by himself. It caused a bit of mild anxiety to think he was.“Right here, Severus,” Harry told him, looking back at the bed from where he was standing with an arm load of games they bought. “Just putting away the games and such since an elf moved a cabinet in here for them.”“A constructive use of your time, yes,” Severus said, lying back down with a relieved sigh. He felt better knowing the youngest of them was in the room as well. “The elves have the clothes and other items?”“They're handling them,” Sirius assured him, grinning a little bigger. Typical Severus. Though he was trying to relax, he couldn't without knowing all was being taken care of. It was just part of Severus' personality he and Harry accepted long ago.“I don't think we're venturing out much from now on,” Severus grunted with a sigh. Even though the trip went smoothly and nothing horrific happened, it was too nerve wracking to do it much. Black and Harry knew how dangerous it was, so they didn't run amok or cause issues. Hell, they were quite quick about what they picked out, like he wanted. It was just—he knew the risk of being noticed, so it caused issues.“No, we aren't,” Sirius told him with a shake of his head. He then slid up onto the bed and sat by Severus, putting a hand on his shoulder. “We have everything we need when it comes to clothes and whatnot. The games will keep us occupied. You picked up some books you wanted. Then we grabbed some groceries to tide us over so Remus doesn't have to do it. The fast food place we stopped at before coming home was so busy no one would have taken notice of us. We're good, Severus. Whatever else we need we can order through catalogs.”“We will,” Severus told him, pleased, calming down more. Then, quietly, he added, “I'm happy the two of you didn't get up to your normal hi-jinks in the stores. While we bought more than we planned for, it was needed.”Harry finished up what he was doing then came over and planted himself on the other side of Severus. “We knew what a risk it was and weren't about to do anything to call attention to ourselves,” he said. “While we had fun looking, something you seemed to enjoy as well, we weren't going to put ourselves in danger.”“Very true,” Severus agreed with a slight nod. “Though Black bought out most of the store, we managed to not end up noticed.” He added, unable to help himself and smirking slightly at the memory of the mass.“I might have done that,” Sirius admitted with a grin, winking at Harry. Then he added, tone serious, “It wasn't anything we didn't need, though. All of us needed new clothes for plenty of reasons. With us not knowing how long this shit will drag on, we needed extra. As they're new, we can put spells on them to make sure they last longer and, in Harry's case, enlarge them if we have to. With as bad of shape as his clothes were in, the spells would have ruined them.”“A good reason, yes,” Severus told him. “Do you know the spells or where we can find them? I'm not sure if I have any books with them.”“I have a couple,” Sirius assured him. “They're from when I was in school and helping Remus. It's something we'll all learn quickly. Nothing to worry about.”“Good,” Severus sighed, pleased. “We'll work on those over the next few days.”Once more lifting the flannel from over one eye, he looked at Harry and told him, smirking slightly, “And you're burning those rags you normally wear.”“With pleasure,” Harry chuckled, grinning at him. “The less reminders I have of the past, the better off I'll be.”After dropping the flannel back over his eye, he added, “You as well, Black.”“Understood,” Sirius laughed. Then he nudged the man and told him, “And you're wearing those jeans we picked out, Severus. Those look damned good on you.”“I take no issue doing so,” Severus told him, smirking bigger. While he hadn't worn jeans much in his life, preferring other kinds of clothing, he was pleased the two seemed to like the way he looked in them.Sirius groaned softly and stretched out on the bed after kicking his boots off then flopped on his side, draping an arm over Severus' midsection. “I think we all need a nap, honestly. The stress—yeah, it took it out of me as well. I kept wondering if we'd end up recognized or caught.”“Same here,” Harry said, toeing off his trainers and flopping down, curling up to Severus' other side.“I concur,” Severus sighed, smirking slightly as he liked the idea. A rest would do them all a world of good. Feeling the two curl up to him, he gave a contented sigh and relaxed more. Yes, this was good and something they all needed.Later that afternoon, just before tea, the three were seated at the dining room table with one of the board games they picked up and were having fun playing. Severus had played it before, though Harry and Sirius hadn't. It had been decided because of the stress over shopping, they wouldn't work on the house. Instead, they needed a day to just relax. The plan was to play until tea time then they would go outside and find something entertaining to do before sitting around the fire until bedtime. The following day they would pick back up with cleaning and repair.
“This is a riot,” Sirius snickered, moving his game piece after rolling the dice. “While our games are fun, I didn't think the Muggle version would be because they don't use magic.”“They are simple games,” Severus explained, watching his lover move, “but plenty entertaining with no need for magic. A few we bought we can tweak with some spells to make them more amusing.”Harry rolled the dice when Sirius was done then moved his piece, smiling as he did. “You two can teach me some of our kind of card games, too,” he said. “The only one I know is the standard.”“Easily done,” Sirius told him, reaching over to ruffle his hair as they waited for Severus to take his turn. “I know quite a few.”“We can even take on learning some of the Muggle versions. Some of those are quite challenging and fun,” Severus told them as he moved his piece, paying attention to what he needed to do.However, just as he was finishing, he felt a familiar burn ignite his arm. With a loud hiss, he covered the Dark Mark with his hand, face a mask of pain at the heat and intensity of it. He could easily tell the Dark Lord wasn't in a good mood as hot as it flared. His features drawn in pain, he resigned himself to waiting this out and enduring the pain as he had no intention of heeding the summons. When Sirius heard the hiss, his head came up then there was a grave look on his face. While he knew Severus had no intention of answering the summons, they hadn't discussed what to do beyond that, which meant he didn't know what he could come up with to help. The only thing which really stuck out in his mind, from Severus talking about what a summons felt like, was it burned. So, he conjured an ice pack and held it out for his lover. “Try this,” he said, though he had no real hope it would help much. It was just a case of Severus would have to endure the pain until it was over. He didn't like the idea, of course, but there was little they could do until they could figure out what in Merlin's name they were going to do about the Dark Mark. While he held out no great hope it would help much, Severus took the ice pack with a trembling hand and put it over the garish tattoo on his forearm, wincing as he did. Much to his surprise, it did help, at least some, taking the pain down a couple levels so he could deal with it. Now he just had to wait for it to die down, nothing more.“Anything else we can do to help?” Harry asked, brow furrowed as he watched Severus, not sure what to do to help in any way.“There's nothing I can do but wait it out,” Severus told him in a slightly tight voice, trembling just a little from the intensity. “Shouldn't be more than five minutes.”“Let me go get one of the pain killing draughts you have in your kit,” Sirius said, standing then heading that direction. He knew this would probably ache plenty since Severus didn't answer the call. No sense in making him suffer after it was done. While he took the stairs two at a time, he vowed they were going to find something soon to get rid of the damned thing so Severus didn't have to keep going through this. After scooting closer to Severus, Harry tapped the ice pack on his arm to cool it down again, knowing it would need it. Though he wasn't happy Severus had to deal with this, he realized there was little they could do. They would just have to wait it out, as hard as it was for all of them. Not sure what to say, he sighed and asked, “It helping any?”“Some,” Severus told him, holding it tightly to the cursed tattoo, muscle in his jaw ticking as he clenched his jaw as a way to deal with the pain. “Just give it a few more minutes and it should be over.” He added for both Harry and himself, though it already felt like an eternity.Hand slipping over to rest on Severus' knee, the only form of comfort he really knew how to give as nothing he would say could help, Harry looked in the direction of the doorway when he heard someone clear their throat.Eddie floated in, looking concerned then asked, taking in the worry on Harry's face and the pain on Severus', “Is there anything I can do to help?” As he wasn't sure what was going on, he didn't know anything he could suggest.“There's nothing,” Severus told him, relieved the burn seemed like it was starting to lessen. “It's something I just have to wait out.”“Understood,” Eddie nodded. “If I may--,” he started, looking between the two. He hoped it wasn't a medical emergency or condition as going out wasn't something their boys should do, from what they said.“It's a summons from the Dark Lord, something I have no intention of responding to,” Severus explained with a sigh, feeling the sensations dissipate more. They had, briefly, explained this part to Eddie the day before, so he was aware.“Ah, now I understand,” Eddie told him, floating closer. “There is no way to stop it then?”“We need to get rid of his Dark Mark, but don't know how yet,” Harry explained, happy Severus' face showed signs of the pain lessening. “We have no clue how to go about it and it's something we need to find. Just not sure where to look is all.”Eddie tried to think of some way to help, but wasn't versed enough in such areas to really give any kind of assistance. After thinking it over, he suggested, “When you feel better, talk to the Librarian. She may know of somewhere to look or a direction to point you to at least get you started.”“Something I'll do tomorrow,” Severus told him, relaxing since the pain was now at a low ebb, just leaving him with the dull ache he sometimes had after a particularly nasty flare of the mark, the kind which was set off when the Dark Lord was unusually upset. “It is something we need to tend to as quickly as we can manage,” he admitted. Then, after a glance at the scar on Harry's forehead, he added, voice containing a heavy sigh, “One of the issues anyway.”“She will be more than happy to help with anything you bring to her, Severus.” Eddie assured him, curious what the other part was, sure it related to Harry as Severus had looked over at him when he added the last part. “As old as we are, we sometimes know areas or heard of them over the years which have been lost over time.”“We will talk to her,” Severus told him, taking the mild pain killing draught from Sirius after he came in. After downing it, he gave a relieved sigh as even the dull, but maddening, ache vanished. Perfect. Relaxing back with a groan, he shook his head. While he expected this to come soon, it didn't mean it was pleasant to deal with.“As you've dealt with this before,” Sirius started, “since you didn't show, will he try again tonight or leave it? We all know he probably realizes you vanished, what with the articles in the paper. I'm sure this is his way of drawing you out.”“He may,” Severus told him honestly with a slight nod, looking plenty dour over the thought. “At least once. I doubt he will more than that as it's like you said. Then again, he may not. One never knows with him. All I can assure you is I now have a large target on me as I'm sure he's guessed I'm gone and not dead. Unless he considers the possibility one of his other Death Eaters killed me.”“What are the odds of him thinking that way?” Harry asked, keeping his hand on Severus' knee and not wanting to move away.“With how some are? I'm sure it's within the realm of possibilities,” Severus snorted, smirking just a tad. Then, with a weary sigh, he shook his head and added, “I don't know, I really don't. I'm sure it has crossed his mind by now because of my attachment to Albus. Some don't buy I was spying on him and have always questioned my loyalty. He might, I don't know. And, honestly, we have no way of finding out. Even Lupin won't hear. It doesn't matter; we're out and safe right here. Even if he tries to trace me, I'm not sure he'll manage with the wards.”“He won't,” Eddie assured him, having been floating there and listening in. “The Manor's wards will negate any and all ways to trace you. You are perfectly safe here, you have my word,” he added, trying to keep a soothing tone. Yes, he wanted to help after seeing the pain Severus was in and would do all he could. He would also have words with the house to make sure the wards to stave off all ways of tracing or tracking someone were as strong as it could manage.“Good,” Sirius nodded, smiling at Eddie. “We were wondering as even Severus doesn't know if he can go about it that way.”As he felt better, Severus reached down and gave Harry's hand a squeeze then straightened up. “Let's finish the game. It'll be tea time soon, so we'll knock off then.” While he would try to forget the worries that came from what the Dark Lord could manage or would try, Severus knew he would only be able to deal with it until he fell asleep. Tonight he was guaranteed more of the nightmares that plagued him, bad ones, since he made that horrific choice so long ago. He would just keep reminding himself he was now safe and protected. There was no chance the Dark Lord could get to him. While he would try, he knew it wouldn't fully work. It was the best he could do, though.
When the three wizards in the house finally fell asleep that night, Eddie gathered all the ghosts for a meeting. He quickly gave them a rundown of what he talked about and observed earlier then said, looking around, “We need to help all we can.”
“I'll start looking into what I know about bondmarks,” the Librarian assured him. “While this—creature known as the Dark Lord may have found a new use for one, there is a base for it in history. Give me time and I'll find it. Once I know what he did, I'm sure I can find a way to rid Severus of the accursed tattoo.”“Please do,” Eddie smiled, nodding to her. “You may want to examine his mark and have him explain all he knows about it. I'm sure, as intelligent as he is, he has plenty of readings on it and researched part himself. I doubt he will take it badly if you approach him as they made it clear they're trying to find a way to rid him of it.”“Yes, I'll pull him aside tomorrow and find out what I can, then do all in my power to give a hand,” she assured Eddie, already trying to think where she could look. The elves would have to help her, of course, but she'd manage. With a pleased nod to her, Eddie then focused on the Mad Monk. “If you could, go talk to the one who visits and tell her to keep her ears open for any information that can help our boys. They have no way of knowing so much. As she haunts more than one place, she might have a way to find out we don't. She—well, she's odd and doesn’t want to stay in one place long. If she has a way, tell her we need the information she can give us to help.”“Consider it done,” the Mad Monk said in a thick accent, bowing to Eddie. “I'll impress upon her how important this is for so much.”After nodding to the monk, Eddie focused on Red and the Blue Lady. “I think the three of us need to focus on our boys. I'm sure there is plenty of stress coming from this incident and they'll need some extra attention. While Sirius and Severus aren't the type to allow it, maybe getting them to talk might help more. Red, you're perfect for getting them to open up and let it out some.”“Of course,” Red told him with a nod and smile. “I'll do what I can.”Eddie then looked at the Blue Lady and smiled, “I think you're perfect to take on Harry. From my understanding, he's never had a true mother, or parent of any kind. While he's handling the situation well, I believe a little mothering could go a long way to helping him. You've observed him enough to know he's not the kind to cause problems or act up. While observing the episode with Severus tonight, you could easily tell he was plenty upset over it. From what I know, he's the sort who is hard to get to talk about personal areas. I think you're perfect for a confidant.” Then he waited to see what she said. The Blue Lady took a few moments to ponder what Eddie said then gave a slow nod. “I'll start tomorrow. While it probably won't be much to begin with, as we'll both be wary, we can build on it from there.” She told him, smiling just a little.“I think you'll do him a world of good,” Eddie said honestly, smiling as well. “As the lad is here for the foreseeable future, you have plenty of time. We all know a little mothering of the ones who have had a rough life goes a long way towards helping. I think Harry, with what I've seen of him so far, will respond to you ever so nicely.”“Let me see what I can do.” She told him with a nod, hands clasped demurely in front of her.“I need to get with the house about wards to negate tracking. From what I know, they are in place and as strong as they can get, but I want to double check. One of the issues they're most worried about is someone tracking them. While they've overtly mentioned this evil creature causing so much strife, I believe they're concerned with more than just him. So, I think we all need to pay attention to the surroundings and who might be lurking close. We all know we can easily ensure our boys aren't disturbed. I'll make sure the house knows to ready its defenses then we'll take on getting rid of anyone who thinks to bother our boys.”“Easily done,” the monk said, an almost manic sheen in his eyes and he grinned. “We'll make sure they aren't bothered.”“While we'll take on protecting them, we will let them know if someone is around so they know. As they are aware of the players in this mess, its best they are told when someone is tarrying about and what they might be planning.” Eddie told them all, pleased to see the normal nods. Then he straightened up and said, “Right, we have work to do. Let's get on it. The more relaxed and settled our boys are, the better they can cope. So, we have work to do.” When he heard those gathered agree, he headed out to deal with the house and get as much in place as he could. Better to be ready before they needed it than scramble at the last minute.
