Chapter 11
By the end of his first week, Harry learned several bits not taught in classes.
First, he hated History and Potions, though for different reasons.History was so boring most spent the time in the class in a daze or dozing off. Even he did, though he did go back later and reread then do his work. While the topic could be fascinating, Binns made it so boring anything you could learn tended to end up lost. The problem with Potions had to do with Snape and his teaching methods. It was another class which could end up great, but Snape was enough to make anyone not in the man's house loathe it. First, he played favorites with anyone in Slytherin. Second, he picked on people and was generally nasty. The man tried the first day with him, commenting about his so-called celebrity status then trying to embarrass him. It didn't work. The first few questions he knew because he had read the text book. Then, when it didn't work, the man decided to go delve into what you would learn in the next years. Yeah, it made Sirius mad. As the man kept pressing, Sirius did something he never had in the past; fed him the answers to the questions. The more he answered, the angrier Snape seemed to grow. In the end, rather than admit he was right, Snape made a sarcastic remark then docked points.By then, Harry and Sirius were both angry. In the end, Sirius had to pull out what he did before Dudley and Vernon died; every time Snape pulled a stunt with him, something bad happened to him, though Sirius made sure it looked like an accident. While the man hadn't learned yet, he was starting to and backing off slightly, more worried about what was happening with the accidents than him. Because it was nothing which could be blamed on him, such as cauldrons of the Slytherin idiots, ones like Draco and those who followed him, were the issue. Well, and Neville, who needed no help blowing something up. Snape—yeah, he was a piece of work Harry didn't like at all. Sirius had been right when he said the man would take out whatever on him. While those were the bad, there was good as well.He adored the other classes and teachers, especially Flitwick. There was something about the little man Harry really liked. McGonagall was great, too, as a teacher, though not as approachable as Flitwick. Either way, those two classes were his favorites so far. He also generally adored the castle and all the strange bits which happened with it. Meals were delicious and it was fun exploring, though he didn't go it alone, staying away from the areas they were told not to go into. While he got on well with most in the dorm, other than a couple, like Hermione, he adored Dean and Seamus. Well, and Fred and George. The four were great in plenty of ways. It was odd when it came to Fred and George because they were older, but the twins seemed to like him and spent plenty of time in the common room talking with him, Dean and Seamus, especially him, though.Dean and Seamus were great. Not only did the three of them tend to stick together and watch out for each other, but they had fun. He could relate to Dean easily since the two were raised among Muggles. Seamus wasn't, but took the time to explain whatever to the other two. And Seamus was a riot in plenty of ways, especially since he had a propensity for blowing whatever up without meaning to. While it was accidental, it was still funny. Seamus would huff a bit, but then would grin and join in. Yeah, the three of them had a good time. Toss Fred and George into the mix and you had a riot. While he liked Ron and Neville, they weren't close. The two had attached to each other, so they weren't alone. And Harry was wary about them anyway as they were doing oddball bits like exploring the floor they weren't supposed to, allowing Malfoy to coax them into a duel after hours, something which was a hoax, and other bits like that. While Harry was curious about so much, he made sure to stay within the rules so he wasn't caught and assigned detention. Besides, he had Sirius who explained plenty to him when he asked and would ensure he went wherever with Dean and Seamus, making sure not to get into trouble.Draco was a downside, of course, as he was still being an oik over plenty. The good part was he was letting up some. Harry was sure part of it was he was going after Neville and Ron over plenty as they were giving Draco the reaction he wanted while he wasn't, and was just ignoring him. Another part was Sirius. When the little oik starting going so far as to try to sabotage his potions in class, Sirius began doing things like batting whatever he threw into his cauldron back into the oiks own, thus making it do odd bits, untying his shoelaces and other small stuff whenever he tried his stunts. Like with others, it worked with Malfoy. The big one which seemed to make him knock it off and focus elsewhere was the bit in flying class. After Neville was taken to the hospital wing, the oik had stolen the ball thing Neville had. He had tried coaxing him into coming for it, but Harry wasn’t biting. Instead, Sirius shot a spell at the broom, which bucked him off. He wasn't hurt, of course, but it was in front of everyone and plenty laughed at him.All in all, though, Harry loved the castle, a lot, and was comfortable. It was far better than dealing with his aunt, that's for sure!
After settling into the common room Friday night after tea, Harry was once more reading through the letter his aunt sent. Well, after putting out the latest box of sweets she sent along for his friends to eat. At this point, if he ate all she had sent so far, he would be growing to the size of Dudley very quickly. As the week stretched on, he came to realize his aunt wasn't going to let up with the crap she did at home just because he was away. Each of the letters were getting longer with her wanting to know everything he was doing and for him to send copies of his graded homework so she could tell his progress. She also sent treats and some kind of gift. While it made him roll his eyes, he did what she wanted as he knew she would get even worse if he didn't. All he was trying was for the shortest letters he could manage, making it sound like he was plenty busy. He was, no doubt there, but he would have time to write her, he just didn't want her knowing it was all.
So far, the letters were just an annoyance, but this one made him chuckle slightly. By now, he knew to just skim at brekky then reread after he finished classes for the day because he would end up too distracted by what was in them, not in a good way either, if he did. As he reread it, he couldn't help but almost laugh at what she said. The letter he sent the night before was talking about Potions and how he hated the class. He had added in about Snape. Sirius had told him his aunt knew Snape growing up, but wasn't sure how much she did after that. It appeared she remembered him well because she went on a rather sizable rant about him then demanded he tell her when the git gave him a hard time. Already she told him she was writing the Headmaster insisting he stop the stunts Snape was pulling and vowing to give the git a piece of her mind over it. With his aunt, and how she was about him, he had no doubt that's what she would do, too! He was sure the two would be stinging by the time she was done.“That's a rather big grin there, Harry,” George chuckled.“Not seen one of those when you read letters from your aunt before,” Fred added, grinning himself.Used to the bouncing talk from the two by now, Harry ignored it then explained what his aunt wrote. When he finished, he added, “She will, too, trust me. And they won't know what hit them. It won't change anything with Snape, I know it now, but he won't like what she has to say, especially if she knew him growing up.”“Bet that's a first for him,” Fred laughed.“Someone actually saying something to him about his attitude,” George added, laughing himself.“Has he always been this way?” Dean asked, looking between the twins. “He's a real piece of work, that's for sure.”“You can tell he hates teaching and the students,” Seamus added, shaking his head.“From what we've heard from our brothers who are out of school, he's always been like this,” George sighed.“They say he was hard to take even when they were here,” Fred tossed out there.“He seems to grow worse each year,” George grumbled.“And nastier,” Fred nodded.“We'll deal accordingly,” Harry told them with a shake of his head. “He has his hands full, at least with our class anyway.”“True,” Seamus grinned, nudging the chuckling Dean. Then he gave a glance around to make sure Neville wasn't close, before lowering his voice and adding, “He right terrifies Neville, so he messes up everything. I'm sure he'll have to keep a close eye on him.”“Though he really doesn't like Harry, you can tell it easily,” Dean interjected, shaking his head.“Doesn't matter,” Harry shrugged, not fussed by it. “Let him. It just shows he's a small minded petty man, nothing more.”“Good way to look at it,” George nodded.“Just stay out of his way the best you can, because his detentions aren't fun,” Fred cautioned.“I'm planning to stay as far away from him as I can,” Harry assured the two, knowing Sirius would ensure the greasy git wouldn't bug him too much.“Since this is our first weekend in the castle, what are we planning?” Seamus then asked, looking between Harry and Dean. “Lots to still get used to, of course, and we have homework, but I say we find something to do.”“We can give you a bit of a tour,” Fred offered. He and George like the trio already as they were fun.“Outside and in,” George added. “Won't go to places that will get you lot into trouble, as we're sure you can find those on your own, but we'll show you the basics and where to avoid.”“Good by us,” Dean agreed. The twins were a lot of fun, he was learning. While they didn't spend all their time with the three of them, they spent plenty. Ron didn't seem to like it, you could easily tell by the look on his face it annoyed him, but they were ignoring it and pressing on. It was always nice to have a couple of the older ones look out for you. After snagging another chunk of fudge from the box Harry put out, Seamus began asking about what was where, well, beyond what they had seen. He was sure the two would have plenty of interesting bits to show them they would adore. Harry mentioned he wanted to visit Hagrid, something he was excited to do as well, so he figured they'd have a lot of fun.
Since Harry settled into a routine on how he did his bits by the end of the week, Sirius, too, had found one. While Harry was in the common room with the others, Sirius used the time to roam the castle a little to gather information. Oh, he still went out at night after Harry fell asleep to check on certain areas, but some he couldn't do overnight as it involved listening in to conversations.
One of the places he would slip into and park himself was the teacher's lounge. It had people in and out after classes ended. He picked up quite a bit of information there because the teachers talked about the students. At night wasn't the best time to pick up on information, but he gathered some.Mostly it was just talk of the students so far, especially the firsties. It was expected, of course, as everyone was just getting used to one another. Harry, from what he heard, was quite popular with the teachers. Well, other than Snape, who complained non-stop about him and Neville Longbottom. Let the git. He would make sure it stopped as fast as he could manage. The others commented how smart he was and likable, very respectful. The comparison was more towards Lily than James. Sirius grinned over what was said, of course. They didn't realize how much like James Harry was as he hid those parts and they showed only with him.So far, he wasn't hearing too much he could actually use, but having the information, no matter how small it was, would help in plenty of ways. The only real useful bit he was gathering was about Quirrell. Like Harry, he was sure there was something off with the man, though he didn't know what it was. Even Snape mentioned to Minerva a few times there was something wonky there. It was an area Sirius would keep an eye on and see what he could find out. Forays into the man's quarters at night were in the offing so he could deduce what in Merlin's name was going on with him. After listening in to the conversations for a time, hearing nothing useful, he then left the lounge and wandered around. So far he had gone most everywhere in the castle to make sure he wasn't noticed and no one thought anything 'off'. He was good there as no one detected anything. The only place he hadn't tried yet was Albus' office. There was too much risk there. He wanted to be around the old man a bit more before he ventured into his office and poked around or listened. The paintings weren't an issue as he had made sure to hang around a few. None of them noticed anything when they would comment to the ghosts when they were around or Peeves. Good. With a casual ease, he began wandering the hall, checking here and there for various bits while thinking over all he had to do yet. Peter was on the top of the list there. He thought he might have the basics of a plan to deal with him. And, if he worked it right, he could make it happen on Halloween. Perfect timing there. After that it was finding out what Quirrell was up to. He was sure it factored into plenty. Then he was just going for keeping an eye on Harry and making sure he was left alone, by everyone.Walking down the halls, stopping to listen to whatever here and there, Sirius smiled. This was going well. He would just keep up with it.
“Hermione doesn't like me at all,” Harry snickered, shaking his head. It was bedtime, so he was in his bed with the curtains drawn, talking to Sirius. As he talked, he was looking over the Marauder's Map like he did every night anymore and during the day if something was off. It was what Sirius had him grab earlier in the week, what he had nicked and hidden. Thankfully, Sirius didn't show on it and it gave both of them a hand in keeping an eye on whatever.
“Didn't think she would,” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head, holding Harry close. You're showing her up and she doesn't like the competition. It's even worse that you don't do what she does and try to show off by answering every question. And you're catching on just as fast as she is, maybe faster in some bits, like defense.”“She was a bit huffy with me while you were gone tonight,” Harry told him, leaning back against Sirius with a contented sigh, looking over the map. Nothing seemed off to him, just showing what it had been since he picked up the map, including Peter Pettigrew was sleeping with Ron.“What about?” Sirius asked, curious and wondering if he needed to step in. He didn't think so as Harry was quite capable of putting her in her place if it was needed.“She doesn't like what you mentioned, so she was thinking I was raised knowing all this and had an early start on learning, the reasons why I'm doing so well. Before she could really get going on it, as it looked like a full rant coming, I shut her down by saying I was raised by Muggles. While I heard some bits from my aunt and books my mum had, I didn't have a bigger head start than she did. Most of what I picked up was after the trip to the Alley for what we needed. Then I added, I just worked at it.”“It's the truth,” Sirius admitted with a grin and pleased nod. “We worked a bit, but you did most of it yourself other than me explaining what you didn't understand or helping you through it.”“Exactly,” Harry grinned, snuggling into Sirius. “She was just trying to find some excuse for the reason I'm doing as well as she is, nothing more. I made it clear I didn't have a wand early or any real advantage she didn't. You always help, but I have to figure out the answer or whatever on my own, just like I do now.”“Exactly,” Sirius agreed with a nod, holding Harry close, slipping a hand under his pajama top to rub his stomach. “You work at it, nothing more.”“Ron called her a right nightmare no one can stand,” Harry continued, smiling at what Sirius was doing. “She overheard him too, and seemed upset then vanished to the girl's dorm. While I didn't like she ended up with hurt feelings, it's the truth. No one can stand her.”“She'll learn to temper it eventually. We hope anyway,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head over the hurt feelings the little girl was probably dealing with. While it was the truth with the students, he could also add it was with the teachers as well, as her know-it-all attitude was already growing old with them. “It's not good she ended up with hurt feelings, but if someone doesn't say something here and there, she won't realize how annoying it is and off-putting.”“True,” Harry agreed with a nod. “I just don't like seeing anyone hurt like that is all.”“No one who isn't mildly sadistic or does it for other reasons do, Harry,” Sirius told him gently. “Can't be helped sometimes, though.”“Ron and Neville felt plenty bad after she left,” Harry told him, shaking his head. “Even if it was the truth.”“She'll eventually get over it, or so we hope,” Sirius schooled, kissing him on the side of the head.“Did you send the letter off to your aunt?” He then asked, changing topics.“Yup,” Harry assured him with a nod. “Made it as short as I could, but included what she wanted. It'll keep her from getting too strange on me. We'll see what she keeps doing to judge how to handle it.”“I'm hoping getting to know Molly Weasley will stop some of it,” Sirius told him with a sigh, wondering just what to do about the woman. He knew keeping Harry away from her was for the best, but this wasn't getting better, even with him gone. Which meant something had to give before there were real problems.“Not counting on it,” Harry admitted, shaking his head. “She talks about Mrs. Weasley a bit, then goes right back to it about me. She doesn't even talk much about what she's doing, just focusing on me and what she's doing for me or how to fix whatever, like the bit with Snape.” Then he added, grinning, “That part I'm not upset over. Let her have at him. Doubt it'll do any good when it comes to what he's like, but a good chewing can't hurt.”“I'm agreeing there!” Sirius laughed, shaking his head. He, too, planned to keep up what he was with Snape. While Harry had only the one class with him so far, it was plenty bad. Soon enough the greasy git would learn to leave his godson alone and there was no chance he could blame Harry for anything coming. He would make damned sure whatever he did couldn't end up laid on his godson. “Let's see what happens.”With a nod to let Sirius know he heard, Harry pressed on, “We're going to see Hagrid tomorrow. I sent a note down to him with Hedwig tonight to let him know. Hopefully, he won't mind. Dean and Seamus want to meet him as the twins and I talked about him some tonight. They like him a lot too.”“I'm sure he won't mind a bit and will love the company,” Sirius told him honestly, smiling a tad. “He always liked having us around when we were in school. Just remember what I said about the pets and rock cakes.” Then he grinned again, looking down at Harry.“I'll remember, trust me!” Harry laughed. Then he pressed on to tell Sirius what the twins were planning with them.As he listened in, Sirius gave an approving nod. Harry was adjusting well and making friends. Good! In fact, he was letting people close in a way he hadn't in the past. While Harry was a loner and probably always would be to an extent, even a few friends he could talk to would be great. It would give him something to do and entertainment since he couldn't go out like he did at home and have fun that wayWhile he listened to Harry talk about plenty, Sirius just held him, smiling. This was good. He would press on with his plans, making damned sure Harry stayed out of whatever was going on while helping all he could and figuring out what people were planning. He would manage both, it would just take him time. While worrying about this bit first, he also needed to suss out something to do with Petunia. He didn't want it growing worse when Harry was home, after all. She might end up the worst part of this whole mess and he didn't know just what to try to make it stop. It had to, though, before Harry reached the end of his rope and did something quite foolish. He had time to work on it and needed to. By winter break, he'd have at least a little in place, or so he hoped, then would judge from there.
