Chapter 10
“Sirius sent the owl like he said,” Hank told Yama with a bit of a grin. “There's a place here in London he says we'll both like. Gonna take him up on it, of course. Let's see what he says for a date and I'll wiggle around.”
After tossing the letter on the table, planning to tend to it as quickly as he could once he sorted through the rest which had come for him, he was pleased as this was an outing he was looking forward to. “I think your instincts were dead on the money there, Yama,” Hank told his companion, a pleased grin still on his face. “It might work out if he wants to go on, especially since it sounds like he had friends of the other sort.”When he heard a series of hisses from Yama, he nodded. “Yeah, I think I can manage what I want. Besides, it's nice to have someone to just talk to again. Not really had anyone for that since Amy—well, since she vanished. Dora is dead. Yancy is in prison and probably won't ever get out. Derek is long gone to who knows where. He mentioned California, but it's doubtful he made it there. My guess? He's dead as well or in jail somewhere. With his potions problem, he probably didn't last long once he left New York. There wasn't anyone else I would let close. This might be nice.”Yama once more hissed at him and he chuckled, “Want the other too, I admit it. We'll see. Even if it doesn't come, I like this bit plenty and will stick with it. He's not the sort to recruit and sounds like he's plenty irked with Dumbledore anyway, so not gonna worry about that end. Just going to concern myself with keeping my head down and out of the line of fire from both sides here, nothing more. Well, and making money. It's already rolling in at a pretty steady rate, something which pleases me. Let's see how it goes from here and work with whatever crops up. If I play this right, I'll have plenty socked away by the time it grows too hot for me to stay. Plenty good there. Might wait as long as I can with how this is going, honestly. Will see about taking on other contacts. Got a few references for ones not on the wrong side of the mess going on. Let me see there. After all, I can use plenty of the intel they give me as well.”He quickly sorted through what was there and binned some of them as they weren't anything he had to deal with. The rest went into various piles, depending on what they pertained to. Most were for business in various areas and others with intel from the States about plenty. As he looked over the intel ones, he mentioned to Yama, “I need to see which paper covers this war the best without the bunk of the Prophet. It's a joke, from what I can tell. There has to be one I can get every day to stay on top of whatever.”When Yama replied, he sighed as he read through a few of the letters from sources in the States. The mess there was growing worse. From what the letters said, the law knew he wasn't around or involved, figuring he was out of the country and was during the worst of what the boneheads did. The way it was worded sounded like they did want to talk to him as he might know some things, but weren't doing an active search since they assumed he was out of the country. Yeah, good there, but it also shored up his vow to stay out of the States until the mess settled. He had plenty he could do here and on the continent to keep him busy and the cash rolling in. No shot he was dropping himself into whatever over a bunch of fools stupidity. They were on their own there and he wanted left out of it.Just skimming the rest of the 'personal' stuff, he then sent it to his 'office' so he could look it over later and more in depth for anything else. He then went to work on the business part, making sure his pad and quill were by him for notes he needed to jot down. Yeah, time to work and tend to this before he had to go to the office. The more he managed now, the less he'd have to tend to later.
“You seem like you're in a good mood, Sirius,” Arthur commented with a chuckle. He was seated in the kitchen with them, looking tired, after having been out on raids all night long. There was information he wanted to pass along before he went home to get some much needed rest.
“I am,” Sirius admitted with a smile, sipping his tea. “Had a date last night,” he confessed, though didn't say with whom. “Rather enjoyed myself, more than I thought I would, honestly.”“Good,” Arthur said with a pleased nod and a smile himself. “It helps to have some fun with the mess going on and the stress we're all under.”Then he changed to the topics he came over to discuss. With a sigh, he said, “Your source was right; Mrs. Yaxley is in St. Mungos and she's not improving much. We found what he used, something perfectly legal; aphid acid, to get rid of bugs. My understanding is even Hagrid uses it at Hogwarts to rid gardens and greenhouses of some kinds of insects. We think he would sprinkle it on her food. Either way, she's in the hospital. From what we heard, she'll recover, but they aren't sure how much damage was done or if there will be any lasting side effects.”“Wonderful,” Sirius grumbled, though happy someone managed to get to the woman in time. “Is that all you could get him on? It's enough, honestly, as he'll probably end up with life in Azkaban over it, but I'm curious.”“Oh, it's not all he'll end up in prison for,” Arthur said, looking smug. “We managed to find his stash of very dark and dangerous objects after the second raid last night. The first—we were more worried about her because she was in bad shape. Some of his hoard will be enough for a hefty prison term in and of themselves. The DMLE have him in custody and are going from there with it.”“One more down,” Remus sighed, though pleased he was out of the mix.“More than one,” Arthur told him with a tired smile. “We hit a couple other known Death Eater homes last night. Not the high ranking ones, as we don't have any substantial evidence to allow us to get the warrants, but we took out a couple. Jugson and Gibbon. Both had plenty we could nail them for and toss them in the nick, thus out of the war. It's at least some down. Now we just need some kind of tip to give us some others. If they have anything, we'll find it. My department isn't the only one assisting on these raids. Most think it's just us then are stunned when the DMLE, Aurors and others are along using search techniques they weren't planning for. It's helping.”“I'll talk to Hank to see what I can manage, but his big source is one who isn't giving up much. With how Hank worded what he said to me, I think it's best to let him see what he can manage.” Sirius explained to Arthur.“He said Lucius has a love for illegal potions?” Remus asked, wondering if that wasn't the way to get the man.“He did,” Sirius confirmed. “What he didn't say was which one. With Lucius' influence, whatever the DMLE or anyone else nails him for better be big. If it's not, he'll end up with just a slap on the wrist. We don't want that, honestly. It better be for something his money and influence can't buy him out of. And we want to protect our source. Let him work it his way. He explained what he thought would bring the information we need and it sounds like it would work to me.”“I'm content to let him see what he can manage,” Arthur told him, suppressing a yawn with the back of his hand. “We just need to make sure we get our hands on or breathe down the necks of plenty who aren't his clients so no one grows suspicious of him. I'll do what I can and will poke Kingsley to do the same. Between all of us, we'll find a way.”“We need to protect him the best we can,” Remus added. “He's the best source we've found in a very long time. It's something we want to ensure keeps giving us what we need.”“We'll manage, don't worry.” Arthur assured him. “Give us time to come up with a way.” After another yawn, he shook his head then told them, “I need to go. Don't want to splinch myself because I'm so tired. If I hear anything else, I'll pass it along.” Then, with a nod, he stood and went to head home to find his bed.“Hank keeps proving he's the best source we've had in years, aside from Severus,” Remus smiled, sipping his tea after the front door shut. “Yes, Dung outdid himself with this setup. Rather makes up for so much of what he's done in the past.”“It does,” Sirius agreed with a nod and grin, thinking of the other bit Dung did and didn't know about. “I'll fill Hank in the next time I see him for business reasons so he knows. Then pick his brain for anymore leanings he might have. Let's see what he can give us.”Then Sirius added, shaking his head, “When we go out like we did the other night or are planning, I'm not bringing this bit up with him. It's something I plan to keep separate.”“As you should,” Remus told him with a firm nod. “If it goes smoothly and more comes of it, then you can find a happy medium between the two.”Though Sirius generally didn't need advice on bits dealing with the personal, he was taking what Remus said to heart. His old friend dealt with something similar with Tonks and probably knew what he was talking about on the matter. “I'll manage to make the two work. Just might take some effort.”“Did you ask him out?” Remus inquired, sure he had since he sent an owl off to Hank that morning, but wanted to make sure. With all that was going on, it was best to know what was coming so they could prepare in case there was an emergency of some sort.“I did,” Sirius confirmed with a bit of a grin. “Not heard anything yet, but not surprising there. My understanding is he sleeps during the day because of what he does. Let's see what comes of it. Picked that place we like to go for so much. It's nice, not busy and safer than most. He bought last time, so I'll take it on this one.” Quietly, he then added, “Was going to see about introducing you to him if this works out well this time around. Let's see what happens, though.”“I would like that very much,” Remus smiled, nodding.“Let's see what comes before I plan for it,” Sirius told him, already working on how to nudge this forward, though it was only the second date. Then, quietly, he admitted, “I liked just talking to him about all sorts of bits. Didn't learn much about him, but we had fun. No offense, but it was nice to go out and just bullshit with someone different.”“None taken,” Remus told him, smiling a little bigger. “We all need someone else in our lives to talk with and enjoy ourselves from time to time. Even if nothing comes of it more than you have another friend, it's good, Sirius. Since you were released, all you've associated with are me and those in the Order. You need to expand your circle a tad. Hank might work well for that end.”“Yeah, he might,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “He's different than we're used to, in plenty of ways. Since he wasn't here in the UK for most of his life, I'm learning some bits about the States from him that I didn't know. Either way, I like it.”
“As long as you do and you're enjoying it, all that matters,” Remus told him honestly, that smile still on his face. It was nice to see Sirius happy and enjoying himself after all the hell he went through. He hoped it would continue and Hank would be someone Sirius attached to in some way. His friend deserved plenty of happiness after Azkaban. He then began asking about the bit dealing with the States, curious there. As he knew, plenty was different, so he wanted to hear parts. You never knew when you might need them, after all.
Feet up on his desk, leaning back in his chair with Yama perched on the back of it, Hank, with his usual expression on his face, was listening to Luci yammer on about plenty of bits. Internally, though, he was rolling his eyes at the man's attempts to impress him.
Luci had come in for his normal order of potions ingredients and putting out feelers to see if he could get his hands on a few trinkets he wanted. The latter he would try, but wasn't going to promise anything. And, as normal, he was now being treated to the normal dance from the man. There were the hints about what he wanted, though Hank wasn't biting or acting like he understood, then the blather about all kinds of bits he knew was nothing more than Lucius tossing it out there to get his attention. As everyone knew he was in this strictly for the money, a rendition about that area was tossed in as well. Since he wasn't making a move to act like he was interested, Lucius had pressed on to the information portion of the meeting; tossing out all kinds of bits to impress him. While he didn't bite and just sat there, Hank filed it away like he did everything else in his life in case he needed it for whatever and to pass it along for a price. As Lucius nattered, his mind kept sliding to Sirius. After the date and talking to Sirius since he had come to him about information, he found Lucius' song and dance more irksome than normal. Oh, he didn't let it show, but it was there. Sirius had been fun to talk to. What information came out, even from the business end, was in a way like a conversation rather than a puffed up aristocrat trying to get his way with someone who wasn't interested. And he found the give and take between the two of them far better and something he enjoyed as well. This was—well, it was more like a teenager who was insecure trying to pull plenty in. He was certain Luci wasn't this way with most, but the man was with him for the simple reason of he didn't jump at the first hint. As Sirius had told him; it seemed Lucius wasn't used to people not giving in. Yeah, if it kept up, he'd end up with plenty of information for the lot on the other side. After what seemed like forever, Lucius was finally winding down his talk. Hank was quite grateful he was as well, since he was bored to death with all the crap spewed in an attempt to entice him. He didn't let it show though, sitting up and making the standard appointment while assuring him he would do what he could to find the objects he wanted. It wasn't until the door shut and the wards slid into place that he muttered to Yama, “The man is a world class arse and annoyance. I should let you eat his tongue just to shut him up.”When the bird let out a series of hisses, Hank chuckled and nodded, “He'll get his. If he pisses with me too much, I'll let you have at him. Just tired of this crap, honestly. If what he spewed wasn't worth so much, I would have done something to stop it long ago. While he's not saying too much now, what he is spouting helps me put other bits together. It's best I let it go on, no matter how annoying it is.”“Right, we have work to do,” Hank said, straightening up and glancing around his desk at everything he had to tend to. “No point is focusing on an annoying bugger when there's money to be made. I can't do that if Luci occupies my thoughts. Nope, we need to get to it before the next appointment arrives. Why don't you get me that African tribal fetish out of the cabinet and I'll put together the bag of potions ingredients. That way it's ready to go when Percy gets here. He's one I can't stand either, but is a good customer. I just don't want him sticking around if I can at all help it. Might have to hex him if he does.” Then Hank began summoning what he needed while Yama tended to his chore. There were plenty due in today, so he needed to stay alert lest there was a problem.
As Sirius lay in bed that night, his thoughts circled to Hank and the upcoming date. Hank had sent a reply and agreed to it, something which thrilled him in a way many bits hadn't so far. He was honestly looking forward to this. Though he wanted to push for something sexual, he was going to hold back and take it slowly. While he wanted the sexual, he found he liked the part going on now; the just talking and getting to know each other. He hadn't really done this bit before other than the superficial when it came to trying to move someone into his bed for the night. It was rather refreshing.
Over the years, Sirius had only counted three people as his real friends; Remus, James and Peter. Oh, there were those who were around and good acquaintances, but not real friends. Since Azkaban, Remus was generally it for the friends bit. Bill was close, but not really there. He came around more than most to just talk and relax. It was nice, but wasn't the same thing as what he had in the past. Hank, though, was moving in that direction. And he liked it. In fact, he wanted it to keep going. He was sure, between the two of them, it could end up more than a friendship. And he wanted it to. Badly.Despite the front he put on, he wasn't one who had an easy time getting to know people. His personality factored into it, of course, but there was his life that figured in as well. Since Azkaban, it had been even worse because of what he had to adjust to in prison. You didn't socialize much there, but he knew to stay wary of everything. It was a hard habit to break after getting out, even among those he trusted. And, well, he just didn't feel the pull to grow close to any of those he was around. Now, though, he wanted to. He wanted to grow close to Hank though he was the sort he saw in Azkaban in some ways. It was just different.Hank might be comfortable with the criminal lifestyle, at least to know it and be around those who lived it, but he was different in many ways. There seemed as though there were some ethics there and lines he wouldn't cross. Yeah, Sirius liked that. Especially since he understood the why behind it. What Hank explained when they were out made him understand where it was from. Since he did, he could go with it.With a tired groan, he flopped over onto his side and curled up into his normal position. Eyes shut, he let out a blurry sigh and tried to think. He'd find a way like he had in the past when he wanted someone, this was just harder. It didn't help that his self confidence wasn't what it was back then. He wasn't the same was why. Far older and still adjusting to life outside the nick, he had problems. In the past, it had been his looks which pulled them in. Now those were fading like they did for most as they grew older. And the years in Azkaban showed on his face and body, like it did most everyone. Hank—well, he was young and in shape. While he seemed like he enjoyed the date, it was still the idea. He just didn’t know much about Hank’s leaning.A blurry sigh escaping him, Sirius' eyes went shut. It was time to harken back to what he was like when he was a teen. The cocky self assurance needed to come out, at least a tad. No, he wouldn't let it go overboard, but he needed part of it back to press on. If Hank accepted the date, there was interest there. He just needed to capitalize on it. That he could do. Yeah, he could rock his world if he wanted and he needed to remember that.As he lay there, plans began to form. It was time to put plenty in place and go with it. He'd manage, he reminded himself, just like he always had. And he'd show Hank why older man had plenty on the younger ones.
