Guest began to arrive at the manor late in the evening on the day of Astoria’s Christmas party. The three Malfoys spent the entire morning preparing for the festivities. Every foot of the lower levels had been decorated with crimson, red, and gold. It looked spectacular.
Astoria had managed to cook a feast in only a few hours. The spread was arranged on the long table in the dining room, and fat surpassed anything Scorpius had ever seen at Hogwarts. He had no idea how his father had managed to stay so thin after all the years of Astoria’s cooking.
His mother was an amazing women. She had single handedly turned the old house into a welcoming home. Scorpius knew that his childhood home had a dark past. It was commonly known that the Dark Lord himself had lived there in the last years of the second war. However, in it’s current state, it would not be difficult to imagine Saint Nick walking in through the front door and resting his feet by the fire.
“Scorpius dear, come here!” His mother beckoned him from atop the grand staircase. “I want you too meet someone.” He quickly climbed the staircase to find his mother standing in a group of other women.
“He does look like Draco!” Gasped a rather large witch dressed in plum robes. “He is a bit skinnier tho!”
“He must have gotten that from his mother!” Remarked another witch in a rather short skirt.
“Still,” Interjected yet another witch who looked quite old, “he is very handsome.” The old witch leaned intently toward Astoria. “You know dear, I have several lovely Granddaughters in France would be a fine match for your son.”
“Scorpius,” Astoria said as she flashed her son a knowing smile, “These are my new nurse assistants. This is Madame Parks,” she said gesturing to the large witch, “Miss Tauber” the short skirted witch flashed him sultry smile, “and Madame Colazario.”
“Pleased to meet you.” He said kindly, giving a small bow.
“Scorpius would you mind finding your father for me?” Astoria asked, observing Miss Tauber’s lustful gaze moving over her son.
“Certainly mother.” Scorpius walked back down the staircase, happy to have been released from what would surly have been a dull conversation with his mother’s co-workers. He was not entirely certain if his mother had actually wanted him to go in search of his father, but he figured he would anyway. There was a good chance that Draco had placed himself somewhere at the edge of the party just far enough to avoid the crowd, but still maintaining a presence acceptable to his wife.
Scorpius found his father standing next to the wine table talking to a short stubby man with a patchy brown beard. “Well surely Mr. Malfoy you have read the Science of Cauldron Making by Richford Schikemen! A marvelous book really! One can never truly appreciate an art until they have learned about it from a master.” The wizard was telling Draco loudly.
“I must confess that I have not yet had the chance Mr. uh..”
“Cabbinsby! Erridus Cabbinsby!” Provided the wizard furiously shaking Draco’s hand with his own stubby one.
“Delighted!” Draco said lifting his eyebrows and smiling curiously at Mr. Cabbinsby.”However, as I was saying, I have not read the book, but Schikemen himself is upstairs in the drawing room if you would like to speak to him in person.”
“He is here?!” Said the other wizard gasping. “I must go to him at once. Thank you Mister Malfoy.” He shook Draco’s hand one last time and practically ran towards the drawing room, slicking back his brown hair as he did so.
Scorpius smiled widely as he watched his father pour a large glass of wine from the table next to him. “Is Schikemen actually in the drawing room father?”
Draco turned quickly, his face going from one of annoyance to one of relief as he looked at his son. “Yes the master of all things cauldrons is in our drawing room! He accepted your mother’s invitation. Can you hardly believe it?” He said with mock excitement.
“Did you invite any of these people yourself?” Scorpius asked.
“No.” Draco said as he turned back to the table and poured a second glass of wine for his son. “Here, have some, you may need it to survive the rest of the party.”
“There was an old witch upstairs, one that works with mother, she wants to set me up with one of her French granddaughters.” Scorpius said with a small laugh.
“Oh yes, Madame Colazario.” Draco said, articulating the foreign name with great detail. “She would be so disappointed if she knew the truth.”
Scorpius looked down at the floor feeling guilty. “I’m sorry father.”
“Stop Scorpius.” Draco said, placing a hand on his son’s shoulder. “I only want you to be happy.”
“Thank you.” He replied quietly.
“So just out of curiosity, do you have a um-“ Draco paused to search for the word “a someone?”
“I do.” Scorpius answered hesitantly. His heart began to accelerate.
“But you are not ready to tell me about him yet, are you?” Draco said quickly, sensing his son’s discomfort. “It’s quite alright.”
“I’m sorry.” Scorpius apologized once more.
“I understand.” Draco said. He motioned for his son to take a seat on the bench behind them. They sat together for a few minutes in silence, sipping their wine. “Promise me that you will be careful.” Draco said, breaking the silence.
“I’m not going to get pregnant father.” Scorpius said jokingly.
“I’m being serious Scorpius.” His father began solemnly. “I’m sure you already understand the dangers of being a Malfoy in this day and age. When your grandmother lied to the Dark Lord about the death of Harry Potter we became branded as traitors. Those who fought against the Dark Lord will not soon forget the part our family played, that I played, in the loss of so many innocent lives. We have few friends on either side. I don’t want you to become more of a target for our enemies given your…preferences.”
“I will be careful Father. I promise.” Scorpius said strongly. He had already made the same promise to Rose a few weeks before.
“This boy of yours, I hope he treats you well.”
“He does.” Scorpius said blushing, hoping that his father was not looking.
