Slowly Severus regained consciousness to the worst pain he'd ever experienced. His head felt like it had been cleaved clean open. His thoughts were a mess to say the least. He couldn't focus on anything. He dared not even his eyes with amount of pain even just breathing seemed to cause him. His breath caught.
"Sev?" A gentle and soft voice whispered at a level so barely audible it struck Severus profoundly that the voice would be so considerate. Severus began to shake from an intense cold that seemed to be seeping from his chest to the rest of him. "Shh love I got you." The voice cooed gently as something warm was draped over him and a strong arm curled up around his chest. The intense cold seemed to lesson and he felt warm. At least more so then he had before. He wanted to see Sirius, but the pain in his head wouldn't let him even think it. He moaned softly at another sharp jab of pain scattered all coherent thought. Leaving him drifting in a land of semi-darkness and pain.
Sirius had felt the tension underneath him and woken slowly. He could tell that Severus was awake even if the man had yet to open his eyes. He could hear the catch in his breathing that indicated the intensity of the pain. He could feel the shaking as it intensified and suddenly felt the ice cold permeate Severus's whole form as his body shook even harder. He couldn't believe just how cold Severus felt under his hand. Drawing the thickest duvet he'd found he pulled it over Severus and draped his arm around his lover's chest speaking softly. He wanted to do something, anything to ease the intense pain he felt radiating from the other man.
He heard the door open, knowing it could only be one of three people Sirius rose and made sure the duvet completely covered Severus before walking as quietly as he could from the room. Still he heard the pain filled moan that escaped his partners throat even at the small amount of noise he made. He shut the door as he exited hearing the groan at the click the lock made and cringing.
"Madam Pomfrey," Sirius whispered in greeting in a bare whisper.
"He's awake?" Poppy asked just as softly.
"And in intense pain, he turned insanely cold moments after waking," Sirius explained.
"I feared as much," Poppy said with a soft sigh, "his body will have a hard time regulating normal functions. The one's that concern me most of all are his breathing and heart rate. I do hope that those are stable so I can give him a few potion to help," she went on to add.
"I guess there is no reason to delay then," Sirius said with a sigh pushing the door open to the bedroom as he led Poppy inside. No one talked as she came in and did her scan, frowning at the result. A sigh of relief escaping her lips.
"It looks like only his sensation perception have been affected," Poppy whispered very softly. "I have a few potion you'll need to help him drink." With that she pulled out three vials from her apron and handed them to Sirius, "I'll leave you to it. He'll be confused and disorientated when the potions take affect. It will be hard for him enough without me here. I'll return in three hours for his next check up and dose."
Without another word she saw herself out. Sirius gently tipped the vials to Severus's lips and was pleased when his partner drank them without complaint. He'd managed to get the third one into Severus before the man started to twitch and jerk. Sighing Sirius set the now empty vial and waited out the reaction. No doubt he was reliving the cruciatus curse, from the way his face contorted and his lips formed a faint line pressed so tightly together as if to keep from screaming. As fast as it started he went limp and fell into an uneasy sleep.
For the next day this was all Sirius could get. Severus would react to memories as if he were reliving it. The only consolation he had that Severus didn't bleed when the scars would turn pink and angry as if they were recently healed not aged scars. It pained him to watch. Sometimes they had visitors, other times Sirius was alone. Severus seemed in a constant state of pain and agitation. From the Cruciatus and tortures he relived prominently in his mind. Sirius knew that the memories that Severus was constantly being exposed to where the ones the Dark Lord had tortured him with, and it ate at Sirius that he couldn't do anything to help. That Severus had to relive those. As if they were happening again. The smells, sounds, tastes, touch, even temperature of those memories took a tole on his physical body. The only solace he found was that Severus's breathing and heart rate didn't seem affected.
After three days of this state Sirius began to fear they would never get Severus back. He sat next to his partner and was shocked to see the dark obsidian gaze he'd missed so terribly much slowly focus on him.
"Siri?" The faint barely audible scratchy tone coming from Severus was enough o make Sirius cry softly.
"Oh Sev!" Sirius whispered and threw himself across the man's chest weeping in spent anxiety.
"Shhhh love," came the soft rumble as strong arms encircled him and held him tightly. Sirius clung to his partner with all he had. Weeping until the tears were spent. Severus didn't speak, but Sirius could feel the intensity of his gaze. Could feel the strong presence. As he was held. A part of him felt horrible for reacting like this when he knew that Severus must be needing him to be strong, but Sirius had started to believe that he'd lost his partner. It had eaten him whole the night before. To hear him speak. See his eyes unclouded and open. Focused. It had been a miracle Sirius had thought never to have.
"I'm sorry Sev," Sirius whispered out against his partners chest.
"Don't be, I doubt it has been easy on you," Severus said gently. Running his strong hand over Sirius's back. Tangling his long fingers in his hair. "Not knowing what was going on, watching me come apart before your eyes. It must have been terrifying. Not knowing what would come next. I understand Siri."
"I should be the one comforting you Sev, you've been through hell," Sirius said gently.
"Not the first time, won't be the last," Severus said dryly. "He's done this before to me Sirius. I'll admit not like this. I didn't expect Harry to be able to blast me with the Dark Lord along for the ride. It isn't however, the first time I've had my head scrambled. The worst I'll admit, but not my first."
"What?" Sirius asked startled. Pushing away to look into that dark gaze. Haunted, but clear and focused.
"The Dark Lord doesn't just torture my body Sirius when he is displeased. He lashes out with Legilimency as well," Severus explained.
"I've never seen you like this?" Sirius countered at a loss, and he'd seen Severus come back bleeding and twitching from 'entertaining' the dark lord.
"Siri, that would be because it's never been this bad before," Severus said gently. "Usually I get headaches and nightmares for a few days or a week. This was more powerful. If he kept me for days ripping my mind apart trying to breach my shield, maybe he'd achieve this level of hell. Since he's not done that to me yet I cannot say. A couple hours of this I've survived."
"I'm sorry Sev," Sirius said going back to hugging his partner.
"Why, you've done nothing," Severus said baffled by the man's need to apologize.
"Has no one ever felt sorry for your pain before?" Sirius asked wondering why Severus didn't understand then it dawned on him. Even before Severus could answer. "Of course not. You'd not understand the sentiment. Sev, when someone really cares for you they feel bad when you are hurt. Especially when they find out that it's a regular thing for you."
"You're right Siri I don't understand that. I don't need your pity or sympathy Siri. I can deal with pain, mental, emotional, physical. I've dealt with worst and moved on. This is nothing new. Do not concern yourself with it," Severus said regarding his partner with an unbelieving look. He could not comprehend what Sirius was so torn up about. Never having anyone care for his pain before. He did not understand it.
"Oh Sev, I do not pity you in any way. You amaze me with your strength. I thought for sure you'd never speak or move again. I thought for sure I'd lost you. That you are talking, that you are back to being yourself is amazing to me. I cannot even fathom how you could even do that. Surely you cannot be healed this fast? Do you have any idea how many days it's been that you've been catatonic?" Sirius said gently laying his hand against Severus's cheek. Meeting those cold obsidian eyes that softened when looking at him.
"Not really no," Severus replied ignoring or disregarding the rest of Sirius words and question and only answering the last part. "How long have I been out?"
"Four days," Sirius replied softly. Shaking his head.
"Interesting," Severus stated. Sirius gapped at him.
"Interesting?" Sirius in shock. "The hell is wrong with you Sev? It isn't bloody interesting. It's fucking horrible! Just what the hell is so interesting about it?" The raw anger in his words made Severus stare at his lover in disbelief.
"From an intellectual standpoint it is interesting Siri," Severus stated not understanding what was upsetting Sirius now.
"I don't care about your damn intellectual pursuit you idiot! You could have DIED Sev, do you even understand that?" Sirius growled at him. His voice sounding like an angry dog barking more then a human speaking.
"It doesn't matter Siri. I'm not dead, For me it has little to no difference if I live or die. I face death every day I live. What difference does it make if I am alive or dead? While I am alive I can seek to understand and use this to the Order's advantage in this war. My life is of no consequence if it is another weapon in our service to defeat the Dark Lord. Siri you must understand, do try to at least," Severus stated this as simple fact. As Sirius met his gaze he saw that this indeed was what Severus believed. That his life had so little value it was worth it's end if it helped them. That angered Sirius as it told him exactly how little anyone had valued Severus's life and the risks he took every damn day for them. He was more determined then ever to make the Order see just the man they were tossing to the world to fend for himself. Just who it was that stood between them and the Dark Lord. Sirius knew that no words could help now. He would have to show Severus as any spoken word would only be met with skepticism and rebuke.
"The only way that Harry could have channeled the Dark Lord's full consciousness into that spell is if he was more then just connected to him through a mental link. He would have to have a piece of the Dark Lord inside him Siri. Do you understand that? What that means for this war? It proves what we were discussing about Horcruxes. The diary must have been a Horcrux," Severus continued on unaware of the turmoil inside his partner.
"What do you mean Harry is a Horcrux Sev?" Sirius asked utterly startled by that.
"If one Horcrux causes the soul to become fractured and makes it easier to break on the second time. Then if two Horcrux were made the soul would be even more fragile. He would be even more insane. Even less human. Everything I have witnessed of him since I became his follower even before I turned spy, he was getting more and more violent. Less and less stable. Not just in physical appearance, but in stability of mental state. Even Lucius has noted a drastic change in the Dark Lord. Even Harry noticed that the Dark Lord from the diary was no were near as insane as the Dark Lord he met at the resurrection. He has no qualms murdering purebloods at one point that was the greatest sin any of his followers could do was harm a pureblood let alone murder one. Now he would gladly kill us all in a fit of rage!" Severus explained as best he could. He was exhausted, but there was little he could do to rest. He wanted to get up, but with Sirius laying across his chest it was hard to even breath let alone move. His body was sore and weary. Weary to the bone. He sighed. His head aching.
"You're saying that.... No Sev it can't. Harry is just a child, he was just a baby!" Sirius whispered out.
"He was the only living being in that house Siri. Already fractured beyond recognizing the soul of the Dark Lord was released from the destroyed mortal shell. A part of it fled that place seeking a place of safety and to rebuild. Another broken part that was never missed or noticed latched on to the only living being in that house." Severus explained his voice cold.
"How do we remove it?" Sirius asked in shock with tears flowing in his eyes.
"I don't know Siri," Severus said with a sad sigh. "I'd have to do research, but the only thing that I know for certain is the vessel must be destroyed for the Horcrux to be destroyed."
"You can't kill Harry!" Sirius screamed out.
"That is not my intent Siri," Severus sighed softly shaking his head. "We need to speak with Albus."
"Ok, but you need to eat before, I don't think giving you more broth will help at all. Do you have a headache? Poppy left some potions for you in case you needed them when you woke," Sirius said.
"I would like to have a light breakfast, and yes pass me the potions she left for me I could use the pain reliever for certain," Severus said resigned to the fact that he must admit his weaknesses to Sirius. Though somehow it wasn't as hard to do. Sirius loved him and that alone made it easier for Severus to admit to being in pain.
