CHAPTER ELEVEN
HERMIOINE
- “What do you mean he’s gone, Harry?”
- “I mean I haven’t seen him downstairs. He must have apparated without telling anyone.”
- “That boy will get himself in trouble” Mcgonagal says with a shake of her head. “As bad as it sounds, I have to go too. I have to brew the potion for Severus. The poison of that damned snake should be out of his system, before it has a chance to do any more damage.”
- “Maybe Harry should go with you professor and look for Draco.”
- “And what about you, my girl? You are still very weak.”
- “I’ll be fine, professor. I don’t want us to waste any more time.”
Minerva agrees, but Harry still looks at me with some doubt on his face.
- “Mione, I don’t think it’s the best idea.”
- “If you don’t find him, he will get himself arrested. Do you think it will be the best outcome in the given situation?”
- “No”
- “Then go. I’ll take care of myself.”
- “Ok. I won’t be long. I promise” he says and I watch as both of them disappear with a soft pop.
Once on my own, I try to get up and surprised as to how easy it seems to be. After near death experience, I would assume that something like getting up and walking should not be accomplished that easily. I really do own him my life. Both of them, in a sense. I walk to the other room and slowly open the door. He lays there by Lucius, covered with a soft blanket. For some reason, looking at his shirtless form, makes me uneasy. I’ve never seen so many scars. Unintentionally, I ask myself what should one endure to have so many of them? I walk to the bed and pull the blanket higher to cover him up to his neck. Without any good reason, I keep standing there looking at his sleeping form.
My mind tells me that I should just go. Should he open his eyes, he might not like my presence in this room, especially while being in this state, but something inside keeps me there. Without giving it much thought, I reach to his face and remove few long strands from his eyes. His hair is damp and large drops of sweat are sliding down from his face. Gently, I place my hand on his forehead. He is burning with fever, which is most probably caused by the venom in his blood. I wish professor Mcgonagal would hurry up with the potion. I turn my head to Lucius and notice that he doesn’t look any better. As much as I despise him, I know how important he is to Severus and I wish he’d get better.
Severus. That’s strange. When did he become Severus and not Professor Snape to me? Before my mind can wonder off, I hear his voice. It’s feels as if his vocal cords are failing and each word comes out like a croaked whisper.
- “Miss Granger, you’re awake.” He coughs, as the wounds on his neck visibly get worse.
- “Yes, I’m awake, professor. Thanks to you. I know what you did for me on the battlefield. Thank you for saving my life.”
- “How…”
His question is interrupted with another severe cough that looks like it’s about to rapture his whole chest.
- “Professor, please try not to talk. Your vocal cords seem to be failing because of the poison. I know what happened, because Harry told me what you did. Again, thank you for that.”
He nods and turns his head to Lucius. I understand that he wants to know if anything had changed in his condition.
- “I’m sorry, there seem to be no changes with him. Professor Mcgonagal went to brew the potion for you. She should soon be back.”
He moves his lips and I’m able to recognize the word “Draco” even though he never says it.
- “He, ummm… he left. I don’t know where. I sent Harry to search for him, to make sure he’s not captured by the aurors.”
He closes his eyes and shakes his head.
- “Please don’t worry. I’m sure Harry will be able to do it. No matter what you think of him, he’s really good at finding things. He has natural instincts.”
A familiar sneer is visible on his face, before another cough rips out of his chest. This one drains him of all the remaining energy. Unable to keep his eyes open any longer, he loses his continence.
- “Professor? Professor are you with me?” I stroke his cheek lightly and watch his head loll to one side. “Professor, please open your eyes” I yell and bend to listen for any signs of breathing. Barely, but still there. Fear overtakes me. “Gods, just don’t let him die. Not like this. Not here.”
I look around and start thinking frantically. I take a look at Lucius and the thought finally strikes me. Pulling out my wand, I rush to him and listen if there’s any breathing. None. “Please Gods, please…” With a shaking hand, I direct the end of my wand into his chest, as close to the heart as possible. “Impulsa Cor Meum” His whole body jumps from the electroshock wave my wand sends to his heart. Connected to him by one life, my own heart feels like it’s about to burst from the powerful shock wave that goes through it. My whole body starts trembling, but I clutch my wand harder and lower myself to listen for any breathing. None. Without thinking twice, I repeat the same thing once again. The shock is stronger this time, or maybe it just feels like it. My head starts spinning, but I look at his chest again and see it moving, as he slowly breathes in and out.
Managing to take a few steps closer to the other side of the bed, I look into the open eyes of my professor and hear a croaked “Miss Granger” before the dark takes over and I lose my conscience.
Some time passes till I open my eyes again. The picture in front of me is blurry and the voice I hear is muffled. I blink and feel a potion going down my throat. A few moments later, I’m able to make out the face in front of me. It’s professor Mcgonagal.
- “How are you feeling, my dear?”
- “I’m… I’m fine, I think”
- “Good. You gave me a scare, you know. I leave you for an hour and you manage to nearly kill yourself. What were you thinking?”
- “I don’t know. I wasn’t. How… how is Severus?”
- “Severus?” she asks, narrowing her eyes with a light smile.
- “I mean professor Snape. No, both… I mean, how are they both?”
- “Both of them are fine. Thanks to your selfless act, they were both able to pull through.”
- “Sev… Professor Snape lost his conscience and I got scared. I didn’t know what else to do.”
- “You did good my girl.”
The next moment we hear a soft pop and turn our heads to see Harry and Draco. Professor wants to say something, but decides against it when she takes a good look at Malfoy. There’s not even a hint of color on his pale face. The eyes are glossy and the only indication of life in them are the tears.
- “Professor, help me” Harry says, trying to put the blonde on the bed.
- “What did you do to him? He looks petrified.”
- “I didn’t have any other choice. I tried to persuade him to go with me, but he said that he wants to go to the ministry and… I just didn’t know what else to do.”
-“To the ministry? What ever for?”
- “To retrieve his mother’s body” Harry says, lowering his head.
- “They took her, didn’t they?” Professor says with a shake of her head. “Those bastards. She was never a death eater.”
- “I know. I promised him to talk to Kingsley, but he didn’t want to listen, so…”
- “You did the right thing. He would only have gotten himself thrown into Azkaban. Why won’t two of you go downstairs and have a cup of tea, while I check him” she says, giving Harry a pet on the shoulder.
- “Sure” he says, giving me a hand and helping me up. “How are you feeling?”
- “Still a little dizzy after the shock.”
- “What shock?”
I tell him, as we go down to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat and some tea.
- “I can’t believe you did it. You could have gotten yourself killed. What if it wouldn’t worked?”
- “But it did. And it saved both of them. I couldn’t just stand there and do nothing. He would’ve died.”
- “He?”
- “Yes, he. I mean them. It’s just… things are different now, you know?”
- “I do” he says shaking his head. “I never thought that I’d say this, but… Malfoy, when I saw him out there, looking for his mother’s body, I just… I don’t know. He looked lost and when he couldn’t find her, he… he cried you know? I never thought I’d see him cry like that. Not that I didn’t wish for it before, but not like that. Never like that. It reminded me when I wished my parents were alive. I remember myself spending hours in front of the Mirror of Erised, looking at my parents and pretending they were there with me. And when I saw him out there, I… I felt like…”
- “Like I did, when I saw that HE was dying.”
- “Damn” Harry breathes out, running his fingers through his hair. “So it’s like that now, is it?”
- “Yeah, I guess it is.”
- “What about Ron?”
- “It’s complicated”
- “He loves you, you know? If you don’t love him back, you should tell him.”
- “I will, just not right now. I mean with Fred’s funeral and all. Anyway, I think now it’s more important if we help find the solution to bring Lucius back and…”
- “Mione…”
- “What?”
- “You can’t just hide from him. You need to tell him.”
- “And you need to tell Ginny.” He throws me a scared look.
- “How did you… I mean when…”
- “When did I realize that you were gay?”
- “I… I haven’t told anyone, ever. I don’t even know myself if that’s what I am or not.”
- “Trust me Harry, you are.”
- “How can you tell that?”
- “Because you are my best friend and I know you.”
- “But how can you be sure?”
- “Well, you haven’t really been dating anyone”
- “So? I’ve been a little busy you know. With the war and everything.”
- “Ginny was trying to get with you since our fifth year”
- “I know, but as I said, I was a little preoccupied.”
- “And that’s what I thought, but then I heard you”
- “Heard me?”
- “When we lived together. In the forest. You… I heard you talk in your sleep.”
- “What? Why haven’t you ever told me?”
- “I didn’t think that it’d be one of the topics that you’d want to discuss. Plus, how was I supposed to tell you? Did you expect me to say something like “Oh, hi Harry. I’m so happy that three of us are still alive and by the way, I heard you talking in your sleep, so now I know that you’re gay.”
- “What did I say” he breathes out, closing his eyes. “No, on the other hand, don’t tell me. I don’t even want to know.”
- “It doesn’t matter what you said, Harry” I say squeezing his hand with my own. “What matters is the fact that you were always my best friend and you will stay my best friend no matter what.”
- “Yeah, you and Ron are my best friends too. Hopefully he didn’t hear me talking in my sleep. Something tells me that he wouldn’t be so understanding.”
- “Ron can be a little thick-headed sometimes, but you are his best mate, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you. Though I suppose he didn’t hear you, or we wouldn’t have heard the end of it.” I look at Harry’s widening eyes and can’t help a little laugh. “He would probably think that you fancy him.”
- “Gods no” he says laughing. “Redheads are definitely not my type.”
We laugh a little more before looking at each other again.
- “How the hell things got so complicated, Harry? I mean, what are we gonna do now?”
- “You tell me. I thought you are the one with all the answers.”
I shrug my shoulders. – “I don’t know.”
- “Fred’s funeral is tomorrow. Both of us need to be there. Not just for Ron.”
- “Yeah, but there are still things that we need to do before that. Didn’t you promise Malfoy to talk to Kingsley?”
- “Yeah. I better go then. What about you? What are you planning to do?”
- “Professor has quite the library here. I’m gonna hit the books and try to find anything that will help us bring Lucius back.”
- “Potions were never my specialty, but even I know that there are none that can wake a person from coma.”
- “Then I’ll try to find if there’s anything that will.”
- “Alright. Mione?”
- “Yeah?”
- “Do you think it’s gonna look weird if I check on him before I go?”
- “No, it won’t. Minerva must have finished checking him by now. Let’s go see how all of them are doing.”
As we walk upstairs, questions start popping in my head and for the first time in my life I don’t have any answers. The end of the war should have brought some certainty to our future, but instead it somehow made everything even more complicated.
